Oklahoma Lawmaker: Gays Are Biggest Threat to U.S.

Here’s a quiz: What’s the most potentially harmful phenomenon or issue threatening our nation? Our use of torture on suspected terrorists? Hawks in the White House? Israel’s Version of Pat Robertson

A member of Israel’s parliament has an unusual explanation for the recent spate of earthquakes in his country: It’s the gays! Free Speech Ain’t Free. Oh, Wait a Minute. Yeah, It Is.

After all the brouhaha in New York this week, this seems like a good time to have us a little chat about free speech. Not restricted free speech. Not partial free speech. Not pseudo-, semi-, counterfeit, limited free speech. Not free speech on Wednesdays between 2 and 3 p.m. EDT.

One-Trick Elephant

The corpse has a pulse. Or at least the Bush White House and congressional Republicans are counting on the predictable thump, thump, thump about taxes to resuscitate themselves.

No Debate on Gays in the Military

Whatever happened to that Republican spirit of individual liberty? During the recent GOP debate, none of the candidates came out against the military’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on homosexuals.  According to John McCain, “the policy is working,” despite frequent reports that the “Don’t ask” requirement is often ignored.

Limbaugh Offends Women, Gays, Blacks and Jews in One Show

During a recent radio show, Rush Limbaugh chortled over a newspaper headline that playfully asked whether John Edwards would be “the first woman president.” Limbaugh asked who would design the candidate’s inaugural dress, played “I Am Woman” as Edwards’ theme song and repeatedly called out to fellow bigot Ann Coulter, as if soliciting a pat on the back.

Best Joke of the Night

Ellen DeGeneres opened this year’s Academy Awards ceremony by celebrating its newfound diversity, and she pointed to the bigoted rants of Michael Richards, Mel Gibson and Tim Hardaway: “If there weren’t blacks, Jews and gays, there would be no Oscars ... or anyone named Oscar, when you think about it.”

The U.S. Military Prefers Nazis to Gays

That’s the only conclusion we at Truthdig can come to when faced with these facts: Recruiters are increasingly admitting neo-Nazis and skinheads into the military, and the number of soldiers kicked out of the military for being gay rose 11% over last year.

  • Also, allegations of harassment and outright crimes committed by military recruiters are up. (story or .pdf report)

    China Censors Ang Lee’s Speech

Government television cut out Lee’s mention of gays and lesbians as well as his thank you to China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Homophobia is alive and well in Communist China. Maybe the Christian right should move there.
