Barack Obama covered a lot of ground during his first post-election interview Sunday. The president-elect said he will close Guantanamo, re-regulate the economy and wait until he’s settled before getting his daughters that puppy. Michelle Obama, joining her husband, said she will become an active first lady once her children make the adjustment to their new home.

“When you’re named Barack Obama, you are the underdog,” Michelle Obama tells Jay Leno in this two-part clip from her appearance on Monday’s “Tonight Show,” during which she was careful to point out that she was wearing a “J. Crew ensemble.”

Now that the presumptive nominees are getting ready to do battle for the presidency, their wives are also subject to increasing scrutiny by the press and public. Here, Cindy McCain takes a moment to endure the (soft focus) glare of ABC News cameras and answer softball questions about her husband’s stance on women’s rights and whether she’d feel safe with Barack Obama as president.

The UK’s Times Online certainly chose a very particular frame for its profile of John McCain’s wife, Cindy, as evidenced by the headline: “Flawed Cindy McCain Has a Grudge List.” Further down, Mrs. McCain gets a bit more credit when writer Tony Allen-Mills predicts she’d make a “formidable but flawed first lady.” There appears to be a pattern at work here.
