FBI Runs for the Border

In a move that further militarizes a bloody drug war that left 6,300 people dead in 2008 alone, the White House is sending FBI agents and equipment to the U.S.-Mexico border to defend against the “spillover” of drug violence. The relocation of federal agents to the U.S. Southwest follows the dispatching of thousands of Mexican soldiers to combat drug cartels earlier this year.

Rudy Plays de Fence

Rudy Giuliani is on the defensive over immigration, which has become this campaign’s hot-button distraction. In response to criticism from his opponents that, as mayor of New York, Giuiani had the audacity not to arrest hospitalized immigrants, the candidate has promised to end illegal immigration within three years. At the center of his strategy is a virtual fence he’d like to build along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Chris Hedges: Bring Down That Wall

If we allow Israel to complete its massive $2-billion project to ring Palestinians in militarized, pod-like encampments in Gaza and the West Bank, we will condemn Israel and the Palestinians to endless cycles of violence that could ultimately doom the Jewish state.

GOP Rep. Designs Electric Fence for Mexican Border: ‘We Do This With Livestock All The Time’

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) showed off to Congress a model of an electric fence he designed for America’s southern border. He said its nonlethal current works fine with barnyard animals.

  • Watch the video
  • It’s a tough calculus these Republicans are facing: wondering whether they’ll lose more conservative votes by appearing soft on immigration or more Hispanic votes by lumping Latinos in with livestock.

Senate Passes Landmark Immigration Reform Bill

The legislation would mark the most significant changes in immigration law in two decades. The bill contains a guest-worker program and offers undocumented workers a path to legal residence and even citizenship (after paying fines). It is far more immigrant-friendly than the House version. Now comes the fight over reconciling the two bills.
