Mark Sanford’s Appalachian Spring

“I want to publicly acknowledge God’s role in all of this,” declared a victorious Mark Sanford as he celebrated an unlikely political rebirth Tuesday night with a sermon praising the supreme being and the many “angels” who helped the once-disgraced former governor along the way.

What Does the Bible Say About Marriage?

Following the legalization of gay marriage in New York last month, people using religion to justify their bigotry have cried loud and hard about the chaos that’s sure to descend upon the U.S. for the defilement of what they call one of Christianity’s most sacred institutions. Fortunately, some of the Bible’s more intellectually honest students are speaking up. (more)

Family Values and Glass Houses

Enough with dividing the world between moral, family-loving Christians on the one side and supposedly permissive, corrupt, family-destroying secularists on the other.

Federal Judge Rejects Request to Dismiss Prop. 8 Suit

Although Proposition 8 passed in California last year, setting back the gay marriage cause, the legal wheels are still turning to argue against the measure. On Wednesday, Chief Judge Vaughn Walker of the U.S. District Court refused to stop a challenge to Proposition 8, dismissing the argument that (straight) marriage and procreation are fundamentally linked.

Calif. GOP Assemblyman Resigns Over ‘Inappropriate Storytelling’

We all know the drill by now: Conservative legislator, predominantly of the male variety, gets elected on pro-family-values platform, is accused of engaging in some kind of sexual activity that goes against said platform, and then resigns after some attempt to deny or reframe the offending sexual scenario. California’s Mike Duvall, however, gets some points for originality.

Privacy, Pregnancy and Double Standards

Pregnancy is indeed private, but the Republican meeting in St. Paul, Minn., would put decisions about pregnancy in the hands of the government and replace sex information with disinformation. No, you don’t have to pass judgment on a 17-year-old to pass judgment on these unrelenting policymakers.

Surprise: Palin to Be a Grandmother

Normally we try not to pay too much attention to what’s happening to the wombs of America’s teenagers, but Bristol Palin, 17, happens to be the daughter of John McCain’s VP pick. Sarah Palin thinks the government should meddle in the reproductive health of women, but in the case of her daughter, she asks for privacy.

Michelle Obama Strikes Key Chords in Keynote Speech

Family values? Check. Revelatory personal stories? Check. Kudos to Hillary Clinton? Check and check. Michelle Obama delivered on all the important subjects she had to hit (but not too hard) in her keynote address Monday night at the Democratic National Convention—and she had a little help on tugging some heartstrings at the end.

Romney, Giuliani Woo Religious Right

One by one, the Republican presidential contenders are going a’courtin’, stating their positions on gay marriage, abortion, religion and other high-priority issues of a crucial conservative constituency:  the religious right.  On Friday, Mitt Romney made his case to the Values Voters Summit, gingerly handling the matter of his Mormon faith, while Giuliani pitched woo on Saturday.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Kvell

Yes, it’s hypocritical when a member of the “family values” party gets caught stepping out on his spouse or tapping toes in a restroom, but politicians of all stripes should be allowed to destroy their marriages in peace.

Closing Politicians’ Bedroom Doors

Many will be tempted to rip into Sen. David Vitter, a social conservative who is suffering through two prostitution scandals.  But wouldn’t it be nice to return to a day when politicians were judged on their public performance and their private “sins” were addressed by their relatives and friends?

Gingrich Had Affair During Lewinsky Scandal

Prospective presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has admitted to having an affair while cheerleading the assault on Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Hypocrisy is nothing new to Newt, who extolled family values after serving divorce papers on his wife while she lay dying of cancer. And people are worried about Hillary and Barack’s electability!
