U.S. Donations to Burma, China Tighten Up

Americans apparently have a track record of opening their wallets to assist those in need after natural disasters at home and abroad. That was the case, at least, after the 2004 tsunami in Asia and Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. in 2005. But the picture looks different in the wake of the recent cyclone in Burma and the earthquake in China, leaving international trend-watchers asking: What gives?

Clinton Gave Own Campaign $6.4 Million

Between April 11th and Tuesday’s primaries, Hillary Clinton was forced to dig deeply into her personal coffers, giving her own campaign an additional $6.4 million in order to stay in the race for the Democratic nomination. Her campaign says she may “invest” more, though critics have more or less discounted Clinton’s chances to win.

Lebanon Pledge Drive a Major Success

Donors attending a conference in Sweden have pledged $940 million for Lebanon’s reconstruction, almost twice as much aid as organizers had hoped for.  Although he said his country had sustained billions of dollars in damage, Lebanese Prime Minister Siniora expressed his “great appreciation” of the donors’ support.
