Despite touting increased stability in the outer provinces as proof of the success of the “surge,” the U.S. military is about to abandon those regions altogether. The Pentagon’s new strategy for dealing with a reduction of forces in Iraq is essentially to pull back to Baghdad and hope for the best.

Army Chief Won’t Rule Out Longer Deployments

The Army’s new chief of staff, Gen. George Casey (of Iraq fame), has said he can’t guarantee that deployments won’t grow beyond the current 15 months. Casey was asked about the extensions by a frustrated Army wife who said her husband’s deployments have more than doubled in length over the years.

Keeping Up With the Surge

In an effort to meet the demands of the administration, Defense Secretary Robert Gates plans to send 12,000 National Guard troops to Iraq, according to a report from NBC News. In other news, the Pentagon said Monday that roughly 4,500 troops would soon redeploy without getting their full year off.

Military Sacrifices Soldiers for Escalation

The Pentagon will no longer limit the time a soldier can spend fighting on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The military can now cycle the same troops indefinitely in and out of Iraq and Afghanistan, where soldiers previously could not serve more than 24 cumulative months.
