Don’t Ask, Don’t Kvel: Lieberman to Lead on Gay Soldiers

Somehow Joe Lieberman, who just finished demolishing health care reform, is leading the way on another big Democratic plank: The Connecticut senator will sponsor legislation to overturn the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Of course if the Democrats show any interest in his bill, he’s likely to threaten a filibuster.

Dodd Confirms Retirement Rumors

Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd announced Wednesday that he won’t seek re-election this November, making him the third high-profile Democrat to talk retirement in just one 24-hour news cycle. Despite Democrats’ worries about the 2010 elections, Dodd’s potential replacement from his party may have a fighting chance to score his Senate seat.

Lieberman Rattles His Saber at Yemen

Ever vigilant in his attention to potential terrorist attacks on the United States these days, Joe Lieberman hailed the “miracle on Christmas Day” aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 and warned that Yemen may be the site of “tomorrow’s war.” The senator made the comments on last weekend’s “Fox News Sunday.”

Lieberman Twists the Knife

Is there a more hypocritical figure in American politics than Joe Lieberman? The Connecticut senator declared Tuesday that he would support a filibuster of any health care reform bill that has a public option—even the version with the “trigger” compromise accepted by Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe—because it might cost money.

Conn. Court Overturns Anti-Gay Marriage Law

The Supreme Court of Connecticut joined the ranks of California and Massachusetts on Friday to (finally) legalize same-sex marriage. The decision comes at a potentially prickly time as the presidential election looms, although both John McCain and Barack Obama have, so far, exerted little rhetorical effort to make gay rights a wedge issue in the campaign.

Ever since he received President Bush’s official smooch of approval, Sen. Lieberman In Decline

While he continues to get tremendous support from Republicans (go figure), Joe Lieberman is on the outs with Democrats and independents in his home district, according to a new poll. Were an election held today, 74 percent of Democrats would vote for Ned Lamont, while the same percentage of Republicans would vote for Lieberman over their own candidate.

Daily Kos: Why Lieberman Website Crashed

Aides to Sen. Joe Lieberman accused Ned Lamont’s campaign Tuesday morning—with no evidence—of attacking and bringing down Lieberman’s website. But Markos (of Daily Kos) seems to have found the real culprit: Lieberman’s $15-a-month web hosting company went down, along with all its clients. (Thanks to reader “publius” for the link.)

Lieberman’s Last Stand: Scare Tactics

With mere hours to go before the Connecticut primary vote, Sen. Joe Lieberman said a victory for challenger Ned Lamont would send a message to the country: ?In the Democratic Party, there?s no room for strong-on-security Dems.?
Actually, a victory for Lamont would send a message that there’s no room in the party for Dems who coddle President Bush as he exploits the so-called war on terror to launch imperialist misadventures.

Lieberman to Conn. Voters: Drop Dead!

Well, we knew this was coming, but now it’s official: Sen. Joe Lieberman has created a new political party that he will use to appear on the November ballot if he loses the Democratic primary in August.

  • As such a move would amount to sticking his thumb in the eye of Conn. voters, the name of his new political party is deliciously ironic: Connecticut for Lieberman.

  • Maybe he should have picked something more representative of his backing: Lieberman for Lieberman

Want to see everything you need to know about how hopelessly out of touch Sen. Joe Lieberman is with the next generation of voters? Check out his campaign website, then check out the site of challenger Ned Lamont:

  • Immediately after the candidates’ Thursday night debate, Lamont’s site was jam-packed with video highlights, media reactions, blogger coverage and fact-checked responses to Lieberman’s charges. Lieberman’s site, however, barely even mentions the debates; there’s nary a blog; and his “news” page hasn’t been updated since Monday. (Update: 12 hours after the debate, the campaign posted a few paragraphs—but that’s it.) It’s such a tone-deaf approach you have to wonder who’s minding the shop over there.

Lamont and Lieberman Go Toe to Toe in Debate

Conn. businessman Ned Lamont, who in the polls is closing in fast on Joe Lieberman, forced the three-term senator in a debate Thursday night to defend his strong support for President Bush over the Iraq war, in addition to charging that Lieberman has made his bed in Congress with lobbyists and special interest groups.
