So, British Petroleum rolled out a new and ambitious oil-recovery plan on Monday, claiming it will increase its capturing capacity to at least 40,000 barrels a day by month’s end.

In a rhetorical move that indirectly, and probably unintentionally, compares the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to terrorism, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has said the growing slick “threatens our way of life” as it encroaches upon the state’s coastline.

At least seven people were injured and 11 went missing Tuesday night after an explosion went off on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig off the coast of Louisiana. But by late Wednesday morning, the missing workers were reportedly located on a lifeboat, according to The New York Times.

On Friday, a full two days after a container ship rammed into San Francisco’s Bay Bridge and began spilling oil into the bay, Coast Guard authorities were doing damage control on their own behalf as the slick continued to spread.

A boat carrying about 150 Haitians capsized near the Turks and Caicos Islands in the early hours of Friday. Local police had tallied 20 fatalities later in the day, but the U.S. Coast Guard was still on the case, hunting for dozens still missing after about 70 had been rescued.

We learned last week that the Coast Guard had warned of terrorist infiltration of the UAE, the country angling to take over control of major U.S. ports. The White House assured us that those warnings had been addressed. Now Sens. Collins and Lieberman are charging in a sharply worded letter that the warnings were never addressed.
How many more lies will emerge from the murky depths of this port-deal fiasco?

With both Republicans and Democrats attacking the White House over its proposed port deal with the United Arab Emirates, it’s worth noting that many people feel that the issue of port ownership is either irrelevant to national security (in the New York Times), symptomatic of xenophobic rage (Andrew Sullivan) or just plain opportunistic politics (Think Progress).
