Britain’s prime minister popped over to Afghanistan on Thursday to declare that this year will be vital in the military campaign against the Taliban, but he ruled out any increase in British forces there.

The bad news: Over the last several weeks, a total of 17 suicide bombers have attacked coalition forces in Afghanistan. The good news: Not one coalition member died in the attacks, a fact credited to increased training and awareness of how to deal with potential bombers.

Sadr City, the Baghdad neighborhood turned refuge for Iraqi insurgents, is getting a infrastructural makeover this week as workers begin building a wall to isolate the area from the rest of the capital city. U.S. forces say the construction is a security measure to stem anti-U.S. and anti-coalition activity.

An American convoy suffered a militant ambush on a crowded Afghan highway Sunday, after which U.S. forces opened fire. Up to 16 civilians were killed and as many as 34 wounded in the chaos that followed. The U.S. military says it is possible that militants were responsible for the deaths, but one witness said U.S. soldiers fired on his car after he had pulled over to let them through.
