Sen. Chuck Schumer is ripping conservatives for their response to legislation he co-sponsored that would punish those who renounce their citizenship to avoid paying taxes. The U.S. Senate has failed us again. On a 55-41 vote, the proposed Dream Act, an immigration reform measure aimed at paving the way to citizenship for undocumented students who attend college, has effectively been killed for this year.

By E.J. Dionne, Jr. — Rather than shout, I’ll just ask the question in a civil way: Dear Republicans, do you really want to endanger your party’s greatest political legacy by turning the 14th Amendment to our Constitution into an excuse for election-year ugliness?

By Bill Boyarsky — The news coverage of the Obama administration’s efforts to stop the Arizona immigration law is missing the point by focusing on politics rather than the merits of the federal government’s case.

Health care, the economy, a devastating Gulf of Mexico oil spill, hmmm ... what other issues out there are practically insurmountable? Ah yes, immigration—President Barack Obama’s next action item on his to-do list.

A new order from the Israel Defense Forces will enable the government to deport tens of thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank. The military order defines anyone who is in the West Bank illegally as an “infiltrator,” and gives the IDF the ability to deport or arrest Palestinians without other cause.

By E.J. Dionne, Jr. — On many questions, President Obama’s approach is full speed ahead. On immigration reform, he prefers to take one step at a time. There really is no alternative.

The tanking economy is screwing over citizens both as homeowners and voters. The past two years have seen more than 1 million people lose their homes through foreclosure, and November’s election may see the same people also disqualified from voting due to election laws requiring official notification of voters’ new addresses.

Not many people pay attention to judicial elections, especially one held in June, and it’s for that reason that some Angelenos are worried about the campaign of William Johnson. A white separatist, Johnson is apparently counting on a lack of attention and the support of Ron Paul’s local organization to help him to victory.

Despite his Southern accent and the conclusions of a court to the contrary, officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement managed to convince themselves that Thomas Warziniack was born in Russia. So they detained and planned to deport him. He is just one of hundreds of victims caught up in an unforgiving bureaucracy who beg, often without recourse, to be taken seriously.

By Marie Cocco — The current push to require voters to supply proof of citizenship at the voting booth has very little to do with preventing illegal voting and much more to do with keeping away from the polls those most likely to vote for Democrats.

The Senate has voted to build 370 miles of triple-layer fencing along the Mexico border, but also has endorsed a chance at citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.
Interesting mixed message, but perhaps the best that could be hoped for, given the political climate.

The bill, which requires approval by the full Senate, clears the way for 11 million illegal aliens to seek U.S. citizenship, and will allow some 1.5 million workers to seek temporary jobs legally.
This is a big win for the hundreds of thousands of people who joined protest marches this past weekend.
