As her daughter Meghan did before her, Cindy McCain, registered Republican and wife of Sen. John McCain, has lent her well-known visage to the NOH8 campaign that began after the passage of California’s Proposition 8 in November 2008. The campaign’s organizers expressed their surprise that Cindy was willing to do so and gave her props for her bid to “show people that party doesn’t matter.”

It’s hard to paint the other guy as an elitist when your wife wears an outfit that cost more than most houses. Vanity Fair estimates that Cindy McCain’s convention ensemble, complete with super jewelry, set her back somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000.

John McCain’s wife, Cindy, sat down with CBS News anchor Katie Couric for an interview that aired Wednesday night, pledging to Couric that the VP vetting process was indeed thorough and sounding her enthusiasm for Sarah Palin. She said she agrees with the Alaska governor about the need to teach intelligent design in the schools but disagrees that abortion should be prohibited even in cases of incest or rape.

Considering that she is the source of much of the McCain family fortune, it’s not surprising that Cindy McCain says she was offended by Barack Obama’s assessment that John McCain is out of touch with the middle class, as well as by the Obama campaign’s ads about the McCains’ multiple homes.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee gets what might have been a terrorist fist jab from wife Cindy over an ill-considered crack on rising U.S. cigarette sales to Iran: “Maybe that’s a way of killing them.” Ha ha, funnyman. Lucky for him, the media is in a forgiving mood these days when it comes to the ex-jet jockey, as Max Bergmann points out.

Now that the presumptive nominees are getting ready to do battle for the presidency, their wives are also subject to increasing scrutiny by the press and public. The UK’s Times Online certainly chose a very particular frame for its profile of John McCain’s wife, Cindy, as evidenced by the headline: “Flawed Cindy McCain Has a Grudge List.” Further down, Mrs. McCain gets a bit more credit when writer Tony Allen-Mills predicts she’d make a “formidable but flawed first lady.” There appears to be a pattern at work here.
