Update: 25 People at the Heart of the Meltdown

At the height of the financial crisis, The Guardian identified 25 bankers, economists, politicians and financial officials who helped bring about the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. What are they up to now?

Chris Dodd and the Politics of Joy

When I sat down last week at the Capitol with Chris Dodd to talk about his 36 years in Congress, he didn’t change my attitude toward the longest-winded legislative body in the world. But he reminded me of something missing in our public life: an ebullient joy about what democratic politics can accomplish.

Senate Gives Financial Reform a Big Boost

On Thursday, the Senate helped bring financial reform one step closer to reality by approving legislation designed to get at some of the roots, at least, of the economic destruction that Wall Street wrought two years ago.

Obama Brushes Off GOP’s Bailout Claim, Pushes On With Financial Reform

Congressional Republicans are mobilizing for an assault on President Obama’s next regulatory project: financial reform. However, Obama’s not hearing it when it comes to the GOP’s claim that the Democrats’ current bill would make it easier for big financial institutions to angle for government bailouts down the line.

Lame Bill From a Lame Duck

If you think health care reform has been an unsatisfying test of the government’s ability to deal with our pressing problems, brace yourself for bigger disappointment in its attempt to bridle Wall Street. This is when the true heavies go to work, and, as opposed to the medical industry lobby, the moneychangers fear not the wrath of their clients or, as Scripture tells, any higher power.

Beck and Palin

Journal Time With Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin

It’s hard to imagine that Glenn Beck had never met Sarah Palin before Wednesday. After all, as Fox News’ lachrymose host suggested in this clip from his eponymous show that very day, the two of them have so much in common.

Dodd Confirms Retirement Rumors

Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd announced Wednesday that he won’t seek re-election this November, making him the third high-profile Democrat to talk retirement in just one 24-hour news cycle. Despite Democrats’ worries about the 2010 elections, Dodd’s potential replacement from his party may have a fighting chance to score his Senate seat.

Wall Street’s Fat Cats Are Still in Charge

Most Americans now know that Wall Street bankers are so greedy as to never be trusted, and I suppose it is a sign of progress that our president finally seems to grasp the obvious.

Lieberman Leans to the Right (Again)

Fresh off a heady week in which he managed to supremely infuriate former colleagues and supporters in the Democratic Party with his filibuster talk, the ever-more-Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman gave ABC News a taste of his political plans for 2010.

Deep-Sixing the F-22

I’ll believe it when it finally happens. But the news that Congress might actually stop production of a high-tech, job-generating and, most of all, high-profit weapons system because it fills no legitimate national security function is a considerable victory for President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, as well as for logic.

Senate Reworks Health Care Proposal

Let’s see if this one takes. After critics blasted an earlier, more expensive version, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee took another crack at a plan to provide coverage for tens of millions of Americans without health insurance. The latest plan, released Thursday, comes at the lower cost of $611.4 billion, as opposed to the $1 trillion proposal that didn’t go over so well last month.

Dodd Takes a Hit for AIG Bonus Blunder

When word got out that Sen. Chris Dodd was responsible for loosening the restrictions on executive bonuses while drafting the stimulus bill, his constituents were apparently listening, as the Democrat’s approval rating in his home state of Connecticut has hit an all-time low. Now he could be in danger of losing his Senate seat in 2010.

House Passes Bonus Tax Bill

After the top brass at AIG couldn’t be stopped from dishing out $165 million in bonuses to executives who didn’t exactly deserve gold-star treatment, Congress is attempting to recoup most of the money by slapping a 90 percent tax on such executive windfalls.

Senate Lets Telecoms Off the Hook

This might be a moment when Democratic supporters wonder what all the “changing of the guard” fuss was about when Dems took control of Congress in 2006: On Tuesday, the Senate effectively voted in favor of granting telecommunication companies retroactive immunity for their cooperation in the National Security Agency’s warrantless wiretapping program.
