First Look at ‘The Governator’

What better PR could a politician leaving such a significant position as governor of California ask for than an animated series depicting him as a superhero? Not to be deterred by things like voting records, economic indicators or events that transpired during his time in office ...

Schwarzenegger’s Cartoon Reinvention

Talk about building a brand: He’s played an action hero and a president, and now Arnold Schwarzenegger is starring in his own combination comic book and cartoon franchise, clearly the logical next step for California’s former governor. Really, Stan Lee?

Graffiti Artist Redraws ‘Simpsons’ Intro (Video)

Although it has now been not funny longer than it was the best show on television (or ever?), “The Simpsons” is still finding ways to stay innovative. This guest title sequence, overseen by brilliant street artist Banksy, self-reflexively addresses accusations of slave labor against the show.

Mr. Fish

For Paul Conrad

I met one of the few remaining 20th century radicals, a man whom Time magazine called “an acid-penned liberal” in 1960, and had a conversation with him that was not particularly radical or even humorous and was barely political, but why should it have been?

Pakistan Bans Facebook Over Muhammad Drawings

Pakistanis will have to do their poking elsewhere for now: Islamabad blocked access to the social networking site altogether over a Facebook-fueled movement called “Everybody Draw Mohammad Day!” which urges the public to create and share images of the Prophet Muhammad. (continued)

Charlie Brown

Good Grief, Barack Obama!

In addition to all the other problematic things we might point out about President Obama’s West Point speech Tuesday night, there’s also the troubling, scheduling-related factoid that the broadcast of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was bumped out in favor of Obama’s highly anticipated Afghanistan oration.

Murdoch Apologizes for Chimp Cartoon

Well, it’s officially impossible to go any further up the News Corp. chain of command than this: Mega-media mogul Rupert Murdoch has now apologized for last week’s Chimpgate cartoon caper carried out by one of his media properties, the New York Post.

Spike Lee Throws Down in N.Y. Post Cartoon Controversy

If the higher-ups at the New York Post thought that running a simple apology for printing the now-notorious chimpanzee cartoon this week would constitute enough damage control to do the trick, here comes filmmaker Spike Lee—along with the Post’s arch-rival publication, the New York Daily News—to disabuse them of this notion.

N.Y. Post Apologizes for Monkey Business

In the face of angry protests outside its offices, the New York Post has apologized, with qualifications, for publishing a cartoon about the stimulus package showing a dead chimpanzee that many readers saw as representing President Obama. But in its half-hearted mea culpa, the Post made little direct reference to the racist stereotype that sparked the controversy in the first place.

Protesters Call for Boycott of N.Y. Post

The New York Post may yet discover that not all publicity is good publicity, particularly when it comes to the Rupert Murdoch-owned paper’s decision to run a cartoon on Wednesday linking Washington politicians (perhaps one in particular) to a marauding chimpanzee. The cartoon sparked an uproar that on Thursday found hundreds of protesters demanding a boycott of the Post by readers and advertisers.

N.Y. Post Cartoon Goes Way, Way Over the Line

The New York Post is no stranger to controversy, but the rag’s latest goes beyond its typically low standards: A cartoon shows two cops, one of whom points his smoking gun at a bullet-riddled, bloody chimp. His partner says: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”
