Since the news broke about former White House press secretary Scott McClellan’s new book, there has been a curious lack of commentary on the topic in certain mainstream U.S. news outlets and only a vague official reaction from the White House.  Meanwhile, his publisher is attempting to do some damage control.

Bush Fired Colin Powell

Despite having some distaste for the administration and an inkling that he might step down as secretary of state, Colin Powell, it turns out, got the boot from Bush’s then-chief of staff, Andrew Card, who said simply: “The president would like to make a change.”

Woodward: Card Urged Bush to Toss Rumsfeld

More from Woodward’s book: President Bush’s then-chief of staff and Bush’s wife, Laura, pleaded with the president to fire Rumsfeld during 2004 and 2005. But Cheney and Rove convinced Bush that doing so would send the wrong message.

  • Also, there’s more evidence that Bush’s knowledge about the horrible state of affairs in Iraq was at incredible odds with his public statements.
  • Gen. John Abizaid, head of the Central Command, basically agreed with Rep. John Murtha about the hopeless situation in Iraq.

    FBI Discloses Its Own Warrantless Spying Info

    The Justice Dept. pored through the bank, library or telecom records of 3,501 U.S. citizens and legal residents—without a court’s approval. Apparently this was legal—it’s just the first time the FBI is publicly disclosing hard numbers.

    Time: Card Was Pushed Out

    The newsweekly reports about Bush’s recently departed chief of staff: “Card did not want to go. But he ‘heard the tom-toms.’ ”

    The magazine also writes that Card’s replacement, Josh Bolten, has “less disdain for the press and more interest in policy.”

    Bush’s Staff May Be Wearing Down

    Unlike the president, who gets to bed around 10 p.m. and has spent a record amount of time on vacation, Bush’s staffers are apparently exhausted beyond belief—which may account for oversights like the botched Dubai Ports deal.
