The Hammer has his hands full defending himself in court, but hes still on the ballot in Texas, so Stephen Colbert was kind enough to make a campaign ad for him. The prayer Tom DeLay says he made before having his mug shot taken, that people see Christ through me, serves as the inspiration for the ad.

Aides to Sen. Joe Lieberman accused Ned Lamont’s campaign Tuesday morning—with no evidence—of attacking and bringing down Lieberman’s website. But Markos (of Daily Kos) seems to have found the real culprit: Lieberman’s $15-a-month web hosting company went down, along with all its clients. (Thanks to reader “publius” for the link.)
Check out Lieberman’s unfounded accusations
What an oddly petty conclusion to a race that has hinged on the most consequential of all topics.

The Arizona senator has withdrawn his co-sponsorship of a public financing bill that he and Sen. Russ Feingold (along with two House reps) had long championed. People close to the situation say McCain dropped his support because he is likely to run for president and may end up not abiding by public financing rules.
We’ve known for some time that McCain has been doing all sorts of unseemly things in an attempt to lock up the nomination.

This is a complicated issue. We’ll let the Washington Post take it: “The Supreme Court struck down Vermont’s strict limits on campaign contributions and spending yesterday, in a splintered ruling that left intact the constitutional basis of current campaign finance laws but may make it difficult to put new curbs on money in politics.”

By Tom Hayden — Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is waging a progressive populist campaign for his country’s presidency, has some plans sure to incense U.S. conservatives in border states: redrafting the free-trade aspects of NAFTA that force Mexicans to emigrate northward; turning every Mexican consulate in the U.S. into a legal aid center to defend immigrant rights; and vocal opposition to the militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Companies in the insurance, pharmaceuticals and tobacco industries are boosting their share of contributions to Democrats this year, an indication that the traditionally Republican-friendly donors suspect Dems may soon end up holding the reins of power.

A law working its way through the California Legislature would provide for full public funding of credible candidates in statewide races. This is the real-deal way to eliminate the ruinous influence of huge campaign contributions in elections. It’s already working in a few states, and a victory in California could start a nationwide revolution. Check it out. Sign a petition. Join the cause.

By Molly Ivins — Kenny Lay paid heaps in campaign contributions to use our president as his “errand boy,” and democracy faltered.

As the White House’s campaign against Iran heats up, the Campaign for Peace and Democracy is gathering signatures in support of its statement “IRAN: Neither U.S. Aggression nor Theocratic Repression.”

The First Lady welcomes the debate over the issue, but says it should not “be used as a campaign tool, obviously.”
Guess it wasn’t “obvious” to her husband when he was campaigning for reelection in 2004.

If you need more proof that right-wing lawmakers care a helluva lot more about their ties to industry than about safeguarding the country, read this post.

The former vice president is going high profile with his climate-change film “An Inconvenient Truth.” Speculation is rife that he is using the issue as a stalking horse for the White House in 2008.
Check out an early review of the movie.

By Molly Ivins — “While the top Bushies lunge about test-driving new wars…Congress just keeps right on cranking out those corporate goodies.”

Pretenders to the White House are all staking out positions on what they expect to be a hot topic come next election.

The scandal-laden former House majority leader beat three challengers to win the nod.
Guess it’s pretty hard to remove an 11-term congressman from power in Texas. Even when he’s under criminal indictment for money laundering.

An all-out White House lobbying campaign has dramatically slowed an investigation into Bush’s spying program and may eventually kill it.
The White House may have botched Cheney’s response to the hunting incident, but the administration sure hasn’t lost its touch when it comes to leaning on moderate Republicans (and even Democrats) to rally around the president. Call your senators—especially Olympia Snowe of Maine—and urge them not to cave in to political pressure.
