Iran Demands Mea Culpa in Exchange for Captives

The Iranian foreign minister has said if Britain admits it made a mistake and violated Iran’s territorial waters, it would “facilitate” an end to the standoff over 15 captured British sailors and marines. Blair Seeks U.S. Missile Site in Britain

For months, Tony Blair has been secretly lobbying the U.S. to locate a missile defense site in Britain. Poland and the Czech Republic are also in the running. The $90-billion “son of star wars” program has performed poorly in the past, and is still under development as it’s deployed.

Global Climate Pact Wins Approval

A British-led group of legislators from around the world has agreed to a nonbinding declaration meant to lay the groundwork for a Kyoto Protocol replacement. While the statement will have no enforceability, organizers hope the agreement will spur momentum after U.N. talks stalled in November.

Allies Condemn Saddam Hanging

Adding to a growing chorus of disapproval emanating from Europe, Tony Blair’s official spokesman has said Saddam Hussein’s execution “shouldn’t have happened in that way.” Earlier, Gordon Brown, the man widely expected to be Britain’s next prime minister, said the hanging was “completely unacceptable,” calling it a “deplorable set of events.”

Thatcher Saddened by Despot’s Death

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has expressed her sorrow following the death of brutal Chilean dictator Agusto Pinochet, a friend until the end.  Victims of Pinochet’s atrocities have also expressed sadness, now that the tyrant will escape trial for years of abuses against his people, including torture and the disappearance of some 3,000 individuals.
