Israel’s ‘Crime Against Humanity’

Israel’s siege of Gaza, largely unseen by the outside world because of Jerusalem’s refusal to allow humanitarian aid workers, reporters and photographers access to Gaza, rivals the most egregious crimes carried out at the height of apartheid by the South African regime. It is meant to break Hamas, but will only breed future generations of militants.

U.S. and Pakistani Troops Exchange Fire

There are at least three differing accounts of exactly what happened on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border Thursday, but most agree that American and Pakistani forces shot at each other. Cross-border raids by U.S. forces into Pakistan’s territory have inflamed relations between the two countries.

Secret Bush Order OKs Strikes Inside Pakistan

A secret executive order signed by President Bush grants U.S. military forces “carte blanche” to launch counterterrorist operations inside Pakistan. An attack last week under the auspices of the unprecedented July order is raising concerns: Pakistani officials declared the operation illegal, and international analysts fear an escalating conflict could start a regionwide war.

Turkish Army Enters Iraq

After bombarding the area with airplanes and artillery, Turkish forces entered northern Iraq, ostensibly in search of Kurdish rebels. It isn’t the first time Turkey has crossed the border, but one source described the force as much bigger—roughly 10,000 men—than previous incursions. A U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, however, said he believed only a few hundred Turkish troops were involved in the operation.

Rudy Plays de Fence

Rudy Giuliani is on the defensive over immigration, which has become this campaign’s hot-button distraction. In response to criticism from his opponents that, as mayor of New York, Giuiani had the audacity not to arrest hospitalized immigrants, the candidate has promised to end illegal immigration within three years. At the center of his strategy is a virtual fence he’d like to build along the U.S.-Mexico border.
