From the Archives of TomDispatch: America’s Empire of Bases

A vast network of American military bases on every continent except Antarctica actually constitutes a new form of empire not likely to be taught in any high school geography class. Without grasping the dimensions of this globe-girdling Baseworld, one can’t begin to understand the size and nature of our imperial aspirations or the degree to which a new kind of militarism is undermining our constitutional order.

Can You Say ‘Blowback’ in Spanish?

The U.S. wars in the Middle East and the so-called war on drugs in North America have resulted in violent consequences felt in our own cities, whether at the finish line of the Boston Marathon or in communities of color across the country.

The Outpost That Doesn’t Exist in the Country You Can’t Locate

Recent contracting documents indicate that the U.S. military is building something in Chad. Not a huge facility, not a mini-American town, but a small camp. The revelation suggests yet another potential source of blowback from America’s efforts in Africa which have backfired, gone bust, and sown strife.

Washington Fights Fire With Fire in Libya

Is the U.S. secretly training Libyan militiamen in the Canary Islands? That’s what I asked a spokesman for U.S. Africa Command. “I am surprised by your mentioning the Canary Islands,” he responded by email. “I have not heard this before, and wonder where you heard this.”

Three Good Reasons To Liquidate Our Empire

The failure to begin to deal with our bloated military establishment and the profligate use of it in missions for which it is hopelessly inappropriate will, sooner rather than later, condemn the United States to a devastating trio of consequences: imperial overstretch, perpetual war, and insolvency, leading to a likely collapse similar to that of the former Soviet Union.

Surveillance Blowback

For well over a century, what might be called “surveillance blowback” from America’s wars has ensured the creation of an ever more massive and omnipresent internal security and surveillance apparatus. Its future (though not ours) looks bright indeed.

Note Reportedly Says Marathon Attack Blowback Against U.S. Aggression

A note that Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is said to have left on an interior wall of the boat where police found him after the April 15 attacks claimed responsibility for the bombings and described them as retribution for the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying the Boston dead were “collateral damage” in the same way Muslims are in the American-led conflicts.

Filling the Empty Battlefield

With “Blowback,” Chalmers Johnson aimed to paint a portrait of how America’s informal empire and its historically unprecedented garrisoning of the world looked to others, and so explain why animosity and blowback were building globally. Now we have a secret history of 21st-century American war in Jeremy Scahill’s latest book, “Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield.”

Blowback From Bear-Baiting

For reasons too numerous to fit into a short summary, Pat Buchanan isn’t someone whose writings we’d routinely pick up on this site. However, in this case his essay about the Georgia-Russia conflict, er, bears repeating here, if only to illustrate how not all conservatives see the recent clash in Eastern Europe the way the Bush administration does.

CNN’s Martin Defends Ron Paul

Rudy Giuliani was widely praised for his demagogic smackdown of Ron Paul during the second Republican debate, feigning shock and outrage at Paul’s explanation of “blowback.” But Giuliani’s performance, while a crowd-pleaser, exposed the superficiality of his terror-fighting credentials. As CNN’s Roland Martin writes: “Giuliani must be an idiot to not have heard Paul’s rationale before.”

Republicans Turn on Each Other in Second Debate

The first Republican debate was like a first date, with the presidential candidates behaving politely and saying things they could all agree on, like “Ronald Reagan and tax cuts are great, don’t you think?” But by the second debate, it’s clear these guys aren’t relationship material. Here are some highlights, including Rudy Giuliani attacking Ron Paul for making sense.
