Not a single American service member died in Iraq in August, a first since the U.S. invasion of the country in 2003. (more)

The final weekend of August was a costly one for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, with seven Americans killed. Also, five campaign workers for a candidate in upcoming parliamentary elections were found slain, and a candidate for parliament was shot to death.

With the death of a U.S. service member Friday, August now stands as the deadliest month ever for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Forty-five American troops have been killed so far this month, a disturbing sign that conditions in the nearly decade-long war are not getting any better.

George W. Bush and his father share more than a last name. Reports show that August’s unemployment rate increased past the level initially forecast, rising to 6.1 percent. But even more disturbing is the fact that the misery index—unemployment aggregated with inflation—also soared to its highest level since 1991, when George H.W. Bush was in office.

It appears that a much-heralded drop-off in the number of killings in Iraq last month didn’t actually happen. ABC News reports that the original reported figure of 550 has now been revised to 1,535—which is in line with the blood-drenched months of June (1,595) and July (1,855). No word yet on the reason behind the initial discrepancy.
