Netherlands to Return Artifacts to Iraq

Dutch art dealers have surrendered 69 artifacts that were stolen from Iraq following the U.S. invasion. The ancient objects will remain in the Netherlands until they can be returned to Iraq. In addition to losing 15,000 treasures stolen from Iraq’s national museum, the country has had to contend with rampant looting since the 2003 invasion.

China Protests Artifact Auction

China’s cultural heritage agency has strongly condemned the auction of two bronze pieces it says were looted from the Summer Palace near Beijing some 150 years ago. Christie’s sold the bronzes, part of the late Yves Saint Laurent’s estate, for 31 million euros.

When Laura Bush oversaw the White House’s Christmas tree decorations, she failed to notice a shiny red-and-white ornament with the message “Impeach Bush.” The orb has since been removed, but the artist who created it still got to party with the Bushes.

Art Thieves Pull Off Major Heist in Zurich

The private collection of famous artworks at Zurich’s E.G. Buehrle Collection suddenly became smaller over the weekend, and not at the proprietors’ behest. On Sunday, three disguised and armed robbers stole over $160 million worth of artwork by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and other masters from the Swiss museum.

War and Censorship at Wilton High

Students at Wilton High School in Connecticut weren’t allowed to discuss the war, unless it was with a military recruiter, so they wrote a play about it. “Voices in Conflict,” which was quickly banned by the school, has made it to New York where it brought the audience to tears.

Kurt Vonnegut Dead at 84

The iconic writer, who challenged conventional wisdom through 14 novels and numerous essays, died Wednesday from a brain injury. Vonnegut survived a nearly lifelong smoking habit only to succumb to a recent fall in his apartment. He once joked that he would prefer to die in a plane crash on Kilimanjaro and said he would avoid suicide “so as not to set a bad example for my children.”

The auteur filmmaker behind “MASH” died of complications from cancer.  An unconventional artist, Altman was nominated for five best-directing Academy Awards over the years, and won an honorary statue this year.

A fifth-grade teacher is out of a job after leading a class through an art museum in Dallas. One of her students saw nude art; the student’s parent complained; the teacher is suspended.
Even crazier: Local TV stations are blacking out Greek sculpture genitalia during newscasts.

Stolen Art at the J. Paul Getty Museum?

Negotiators for the J. Paul Getty Museum are meeting with Italian authorities to discuss the return of antiquities that Italy claims were stolen. For years Italian authorities have accused American museums of purchasing stolen art. Also, in New York, a former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art faces charges of “knowingly buying stolen art.”
