The fact that Wall Street crashed in 2008 is not news, nor is the consequent global recession. What may surprise you, however, is just how far back and how deep the connections that caused this great financial crisis actually go. According to investigative journalist Robert Scheer, it isn’t one political party that carries the blame. In fact, Scheer holds the feet of both Reagan and Clinton to the fire. From free-market Reagonomics propaganda to Clinton’s financial clique and a sobering look at where some of the responsible parties are now (I’ll give you a hint—it rhymes with Mixteen Bundred Stencilvania Ave.), Scheer tracks the meltdown back to the middle and around again.

As Wall Street Posts Record Profits and U.S. Hunger Rate Grows, Robert Scheer Asks: “Where Is the Community Organizer We Elected?”
A pair of new government reports released paint a startling picture more than a year after the economic meltdown. On Tuesday Oct. 26, the New York Comptroller Office said Wall Street profits are set to exceed the record set three years ago. The four largest firms took in $22.5 billion in profits through September. Meanwhile, far more people are going hungry in the United States than previously thought. The Department of Agriculture estimates 50 million Americans, including a quarter of all children, struggled to get enough to eat last year. Amy Goodman speaks to veteran journalist Robert Scheer.

When we think about the recession we’re going through, the phrases “mortgage crisis,” “Wall Street bailout” and “stimulus package” come to mind. But Robert Scheer has an explanatory theory, one with roots in the free-market mantra of the Reagan era and the financial deregulation that took place during the Clinton years. Matt Miller hosts a conversation with Scheer about his new book, “The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street.”

“Your Call With Rose Aguilar” hosts journalist Robert Scheer, author of “The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street.” Scheer says we are all too eager to blame the Bush administration, because the collapse happened on his watch. But how did free markets and deregulation from earlier administrations set the stage for the crisis? What’s needed to fix the economy now? What are the root causes of our current economic crisis? Listen to hear Scheer and Aguilar answer these questions.
