Mark Malijan

In December 2010, Alex was arrested for civil disobedience outside the White House alongside Truthdig columnist Chris Hedges, Pentagon whistle-blower Daniel Ellsberg, healthcare activist Margaret Flowers and 130 other anti-war activists, many of them veterans. The group was released within hours, and a few weeks later Alex began an internship at Harper’s Magazine. He joined Truthdig in May 2011 as an assistant editor.

Before coming to the site, Alex covered the United Nations’ annual climate change conferences in Copenhagen for the Seattle-based reporting firm InvestigateWest and in Cancun on a fellowship with the Earth Journalism Network. His team’s coverage of the Copenhagen talks won a first place award from the Society of Professional Journalists. He studied literature and the sciences at Western Washington University, was in Manhattan for Occupy Wall Street and writes the ‘Truthdigger of the Week’ column. He reads deeply in the classics of sociology, anthropology, psychology and literature.

Alex is responsible for bringing work by Greg Palast, Henry Giroux, Ellen Brown, Tom Engelhardt, and economists Michael Hudson and Andrew Kliman to the site. His work has been published at Truthdig, Counterpunch and elsewhere.

A Failed Argument for Barack Obama

If Barack Obama is to be held accountable by the aggravated left for his first term in office, it’s for “the damage that his capitulation to Republican extremism has caused.” That’s the central assumption of “The Obama Question: A Progressive Perspective,” an early 2012 apologetic by Gary Dorrien.
