Carlos Montes and the Security State: A Cautionary Tale

Carlos Montes

Carlos Montes addresses supporters at a rally outside the Alhambra branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court on June 16.

By Chris Hedges

(Page 2)

“It was kind of misty,” he said. “The ground was wet. They put me in the back seat of the car. I was handcuffed. They closed the doors and the windows. I was sitting there looking around, in a state of shock, thinking is this a dream or the real thing? I tried to close my eyes for a little while to see if I could wake up from this nightmare. I always had it in the back of my mind, one day they will come and raid me. My name was on the anti-war committee FBI search warrant raid in Minnesota. People were saying ‘we all got raided and your name is there.’ The lawyers said, ‘Beware—it could happen to you sooner or later.’ They were raided on Sept. 24 last year.”

Those who were raided were all issued subpoenas to appear before a federal grand jury in Chicago. They have refused to testify. The March on the RNC organizing committee was infiltrated by an agent although the protest groups had obtained licenses to demonstrate at the Republican National Convention. The Justice Department’s inspector general later released a report that criticized the FBI for invoking anti-terrorist laws to justify its investigations and harassment of peace and solidarity groups, including Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the Catholic Worker.

While Montes was in the back of the police car a man in a windbreaker and a baseball cap approached the vehicle. The sheriff’s deputies rolled down the right rear window. The man in the baseball cap told Montes he was from the FBI and wanted to speak with him.

“I blurted out, ‘Do you have a card?’ ” Montes said. “He laughed and said, ‘I don’t have a card.’ He said, ‘I want to talk to you about Freedom Road Socialist Organization.’ I didn’t say anything. I kept quiet. And then he walked away.”

Square, Site wide
Montes has written articles for the newspaper Fight Back News about Chicano immigrants’ rights struggles in Los Angeles, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the fight against the rise of charter schools. He said he was not a member of Freedom Road Socialist Organization. The organization, a Marxist group, is reportedly being investigated by the FBI because of connections with the Colombian rebel group the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Palestinian group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, both of which have been labeled as terrorist organizations. The Sept. 24, 2010, search warrant for the anti-war committee offices in Minneapolis lists Montes’ name among the group’s affiliates.

Montes was taken to the Los Angeles County Jail, known as the Twin Towers, and held for 24 hours until he was able to post a $35,000 bail.

“They called my sister to secure [my] house,” he said. “She called the handyman and he put a piece of plywood over my door. I did not have my wallet with me. When I got out of the county jail I did not have any phone numbers or money or an ID. I was walking around in slippers—at least they gave me slippers—and my pajamas. I got back about 5:30 the next morning. I got the door off. There were files and papers on the floor along with photograph albums of the anti-war movement, Latinos Against the War, the ’92 Rebellion, my son’s wedding, my daughter’s birthday, scattered on my kitchen table and floor. It looked like they lined up a bunch of stuff on tables and went through it. It was the same thing with my living room table. They had a file out from 1994 when we did a campaign against police brutality when the sheriffs were going crazy killing people. In my closet I had Chicano archives going back to the 1960s and 1970s. Those were pulled out and on the floor. They went through all my political documents, including my work with the Southern California Immigration Coalition and the campaign to elect a school board member, which we won, to stop the privatization of the local high school and the charters coming in. They went through all those files. It took me a couple of weeks to clean things up. They took a bunch of stuff.”

“The government sees the Chicano people as a threat,” he said. “We were able to turn out millions of people in 2006. In 1994 we had hundreds of thousands. We are growing. There are millions in the Southwest. We are all over the country, but especially in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and California. We are still unorganized, but if we get organized we could really demand changes. We had millions of people out in 2006 and then they came after us hard in 2007. There was a lot of police repression, especially in Los Angeles. They fear the Chicano people challenging the status quo.”

“Many of the activists that were raided by the police are anti-war and solidarity activists,” he went on. “And even though the anti-war movement is not massive right now, the potential is there because there is an economic crisis. There is mass disgust with this economic system. People are out of work. It is not yet like COINTELPRO [Counter Intelligence Program] started under Hoover and the FBI to carry out surveillance, infiltrate and disrupt domestic political organizations, but the situation is getting worse. That is why we have to have demonstrations to put a stop to it now.”

This surviving Free Wild Human Being is Turtle Clan, and (over a long Whole
Life) has been blessed with Relatives among many Native Nations all around
Turtle and HummingBird Islands….including, by-way-of direct descent, from
Piegan and Northern Dine Parents, GrandParents, and
GreatGreatGreatGreat….GrandParents.  Until recently, though, nothing
“trackable,’’ nor any “record” (even such vanishingly ethereal ones as these here
in cyberspace) had been left in the virtual world-o’-hurt where Nurse Cavlan
has so distinguished hisown"self”....and is so obviously (and “self”-righteously?)
pleased to share some of the details.

“Social justice” and “political points,” and similarly silly “civilized” CONceits
(whatever their make-believe ‘worth’ in the “global” gulag),  add-up to less-
than-nothing, however, in the Whole Natural Living Arrangement of our Mother
Earth.  Only The Living Virtue of Organic Functional Integrity ‘counts’ for
anything here, and no Person or People here expects (or would even recognize)
any ‘credit’ just because we DO what we ARE.

Keeping-score (in a zero-sum and completely rigged ‘game’) does seem,
however, to be a paralyzing (and futile) obsession for many of our tame Sisters
and Brothers.  Nurse Cavlan’s very own too-precious “self” appears prominently
among them here, too, despite his “.....doth protest too much” disclaimers to-
the-CONtrary.

The paid professional MADmen are lying to you, Tame Sisters and
Brothers….because it’s NOT “all about you.”

Thank you. Also thank you about getting it about paid corporate hacks who come to progressive blog sites and clutter them up.

As for the video where I was “asked to leave” an anti-war demo in Minneapolis, well the deepest irony is that the organizers shown were the anti-war committee. Any in Minnesota know that the anti-war committee is in fact Freedom Road Socialists Org.

It was their membership that was targeted by the FBI and Attorney General for Grand Jury Investigations. Which continue to expand even now, as this story on Truthdig shows.

The Grand Jury Investigations by the Obama AG and with Oily Bombers personal authorization.

Talk about ironies, eh?

Oh and the AWC still control their demos and all 10 of them and their kids are the only ones who show up anymore.

Sad really.

It is sad that more anti-war people don’t get it when it comes to operating an anti-war movement on the internet. The movement has been an utter failure as we now can see Obama drone bombing more than ever, and opening up more battle grounds.

One of psy-ops best methods (which they have openly claimed that they do) is to go into sites and spend time on comment boards. Imagine, getting paid for doing that!! The lard-asses are on the taxpayer dime and using psy-ops to insure that the status quo is undisturbed. And they sleep ok at night most likely. Out of 310 Million people there will always be takers, who prefer to do parasitic work than to be an actually productive member of society.

I do believe the entire anti-war movement was under-mined by these internet lard-asses sitting in cubicles along with the corpo media’s silver-bit worth of propagandizing.

Most people still get their news from TV and THEY know it.

At least Chris Hedges is genuine about being anti-war. If he wasn’t we would be hearing how Obama really should be bombing Libya to help the people….which is total consonant dissonance.

Enough people have gone to Libya now and have brought back a complete different story of what is going on there than the corpo media tells us. These countries just want the West OUT OF THEIR LIVES. I can’t blame them.

Reading over this thread I have to agree with Michael Cavlan RN when he speaks about the Obama Administration perpetuating the war crimes that George Bush is guilty of.

I will go farther:

Bill Clinton would also fit the war criminal profile for his Bombing in Yugoslavia.

But the two worse are Bush and Obama.

This is what I have been talking about. People are being dividing in many ways in this nation.

i watched the video that Michael Cavlan was in, and those anti-war people who were trying to shut him and his friends up, are a disgrace.

If you have an Anti-war march expect to be supported by people who believe in protesting ALL WARRING, not just the parts YOU may want to protest.

I don’t understand how anyone with a clear and logical brain can even think that Obama is doing anything different than Bush. Not one person has been arrested. Torturers are still making the circles on the Corporate media.

This is why, on my own blog I chose my name as ‘American Pendulum’ because to me that is what America has become, just a pendulum going back and forth without any change. I support ALL people, whether they are Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Christian, Jew, Atheist, etc, as long as they are anti-war. I read Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, Chris Hedges, and some Libertarians. Dennis Kucinich too. They all want the wars to STOP.

People need to grow up. That lady that was hassling Michael Cavlan and his friends is an idiot as far as I’m concerned and she is no different than MAIN Stream media when she wants to hog the show. I don’t CARE who organized an anti war protest. All people are free to go. Even people who want to say war is ok, have a right to go. She doesn’t own the streets!

Somewhere in cyberspace, maybe, there are those for whom what “Michael
Cavlan RN” finds CONvincing (or not) is virtually a matter of half-life or un-
death.  His usual reception among people participating in the comment threads
on this site, however, suggests that such a venue, if it exists, must be
elsewhere.

Meantime, his bizarre obsession with this Indian’s “provenance” suggests
exactly the kind of paid-for ‘faux fixation’ typical of the very corporate shills he
keeps trying to make ‘others’ here out to be.

What’s to say? This is once again becoming common, normative behavior for
the Federal government. Democrat, Republican, so-called Independent, it
doesn’t matter.

If they accept corporate money for their campaigns, they do the corporations’
bidding when they’re in office.

As Hedges has written so often, Liberalism is dead, the Democratic Party is
dead, representative government is dead.

The only thing left to us is civil disobedience and physical resistance.

So, as the Yippies used to say back in the day, “practice protecting your head
from the policeman’s truncheon.”

If you vote, be sure to VOTE AGAINST THE MONEY!

“Michael Cavlan RN” probably won’t believe, either, how totally unimportant, in
our Mother Earth’s ‘scheme-of-things,’ is what he believes (or doesn’t) about
this Old Savage….or about anything or anybody ‘else,’ for that matter.  True
enough, there are a lot of nativeamericans who’re greatly CONcerned with those
“rights” he lists….and other such legal fictions, also.  None of us surviving Free
Wild Indians are caught-up in that CONundrum , however.

We aren’t participating in the commentary here because we “give a rats ass
about what is going on in the white liberal blog land.”  None of that make-
believe signifies for us, either.  This Person is doing that, rather, to offer to “the
white liberal,” and anybody interested, some descriptions of what their “self”-
inflicted predicament, now in its terminal stages, looks to a Turtle Island Native
not ensnared in the world-o’-hurt CON-TRAPtion that is the phycho-physical
manifestation of the tormenting retro-viral entities’ “civilization” disease
process….and a specific remedy for what ails the inmates of the “global” gulag.

Perhaps if Nurse Cavlan wasn’t already so completely “self”-absorbed in what
he is evidently quite CONvinced is THE “solution to moving forward,” he
might’ve noticed by-now that us Free Wild Peoples have no interest, either, in
chasing-after that peculiar media-manufactured mirage.  He might’ve noticed
this Indian’s regular recommendation that our tame Sisters and Brothers would
be much better-off instead just getting-over their sickening “self,” coming
together as Natural Persons ORGANized into Genuine Human Communities right
where they live-and-breathe every Day, and giving their undivided precious
attention to fulfilling their share of our Human Responsibility as a component
in Her immune system.

Guess it’s a lot easier, though, just to “talk talk talk talk talk talk….......,”
whether virtually here in cyberspace, or actually at some meeting, or
oratorically at a campaign rally…..”....ten thousand talking, but nobody
listening.”

The organizations that have been targeted by the FBI seem to be the very ones to
get involved with: the article says that “...many of the activists targeted by the FBI
were members of a section of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, as well as
Students for a Democratic Society, the Palestine Solidarity Group, the Colombian
Action Network and the Twin-Cities Anti-War Committee, National Committee to
Free Ricardo Palmera (a Colombian political prisoner).”
By circulating these names all over the internet you perform an act of resistance.
One that dilutes the fictitious, esoteric presentation of these targets based on
paranoid thinking. The more known, more open, transparent, outspoken these
organizations and their supporters, us, are, the less effective the attempts to
silence them. If their numbers swelled, outsizing the tea party, we might have
some chance of regaining public power.

The U.S. government is a mob operation that
sells protection & other benefits to the rich &
their corporations.

The government’s first function is to take
money from the middle & lower classes & give it
to the rich, who in turn allow politicians to skim
a share sufficient to provide them with suits,
limousines, sex & other perks & pleasures
available only to those above the law. The
government’s second & third functions are,
respectively, to borrow trillions for the rich &
make the lower classes pay off the debt or go
starving, & to humiliate, threaten, disgrace,
terrify, bankrupt, strong arm & if those
measures fail lock away all who object or resist.

At this time the chief racketeer is BO, who has
- or will have - a billion dollars to spend on his
next campaign. Those who give BO the wee bits
& pieces of his billion regard that sum as just
plain picayune. They are playing at least $649
trillion dollars in the derivatives market alone,
which is 649,000 times more than itty-bitty BO
gets to play with.

BO’s the Mob Boss, but even he is just a
babbling 3 year old baby in a tub playing with a
little dime store plastic duck.

I saw something wrong with Obama before he got elected. He confirms everyday that I was right not to vote for him.

The Corporate media has done a superb job in propaganda and in dividing the people of America further against one another. It is a shame that the left is now divided based on Obama. The FACTS are in on Obama, Clinton, Biden, and many of the other so-loved democrats that some on the left cannot seem to sever their ties. They don’t see that these people are doing the bidding of their masters who remain hidden behind the curtain. Although, with the internet, even those behind the curtains are being exposed.

I was appalled to read some of the tripe coming from the pen (keyboard) of Juan Cole, who had been highly against the warring and invasions until Obama (his man) got into office. Now, he regularly quotes the international organizations and smears any national laws. The instigators are an international cartel, from what all the facts tell me. Sovereign nations, INCLUDING the U.S., are the targets of this cartel, because they get in the way of Global governing. Each nation should be able to direct its own course, not the IMF, World Bank, UN, etc.

The divisions the Media plays on and propagandizes for in America serve no one but the elites.

They will continue on with their authoritarian police state as long as people believe their garbage.

Now, CNN is bringing in the next step of destroying the Constitution, when they have shows on calling for the Constitution to be “corrected”. The first step was Bush’s war on the Constitution, but the Media, under the guise of “justice” and “fairness” is now talking Americans into discarding the constitution all together now.

A guy was recently telling me “we need to rewrite the constitution”. I noticed later that this CNN slop was dated before this guy told me this…he obviously watches CNN. Point is, they will get people on-board over some minor details but if it ever does get “rewritten” in the Halls of Capital Hill, know that it will be to tweak it against the people further.

Mass Call-In to CNN Monday, July 11, 2011

Join us in a coordinated mass call-in to CNN on behalf of Leonard Peltier.  Shut CNN down until they realize they have a story.

On Monday, July 11th, at 10 a.m. (Eastern Time), start calling with your statement.  It is important that the calls to CNN start promptly at 10 a.m. Insist that they cover the injustice posed by the continuing imprisonment of Leonard Peltier.  Advise them of Leonard’s current situation (see http://lpdoc.blogspot.com/2011/07/leonard-peltier-in-hole-at-lewisburg.html

), and tell CNN personnel that they should contact the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee at 701-235-2206 for information and referrals.

Then call back and ask for specific news anchors to cover/respond.  Remember to be firm, but polite. Tell them freedom for Peltier is the only solution to this 35+-year injustice.

They may tell you that they get their stories from their affiliates (local) channels.  While this is true, it is also true that they cover both whatever they wish and stories that demand coverage.  We MUST demand coverage.

Call CNN at 404-827-1500 at 10 a.m., Monday, July 11, 2011.  Dial one for both of the first and second automated prompts/choices.

You also may submit story ideas online.  Visit http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form11e.html

to submit a story idea or http://www.cnn.com/feedback/tips/newstips.html

to submit a news tip.

No I don’t believe you! Nor do I believe Hedges’ passionate, well meant, distorted exaggeration regarding Barack Obama being personally responsible for the very real violation of personal freedom which he documents.

Unlike you, I will require some documentation verifying that Barack Obama had personal involvement and directed this very real and despicable violation of political freedom.

You are a fanatical extremist who condemns all who do not share your fanatical beliefs, your bizarre fanatical thinking is reminiscent of the perverse lunatic Symbionese Liberation Army, or the tragically counter productive Whether Underground, but your loud mouth is your weapon of choice for advancing your deranged radicalism.

Not only do you condemn Amy Goodman, Michael Moore, Chomsky, Hedges and anyone else that does not agree with your fanaticism, but you also condemn the victim of the travesty of justice Hedges documents, and accuse him of being affiliated with a far-left radical group he denies affiliation with, a group which is to you not radical enough.

You make some valid criticisms, but you go far beyond valid criticisms to expose yourself as being a fanatical whack job.

Your comment should read, “Don’t believe me, I am a fanatical whack job!” It is Carlos Montes that has credentials here, his credibility is beyond reproach; your credibility is non-existent, destroyed by your own ravings. Stand down and shut up moron, you are a detriment to fighting creeping fascism, and reactionaries can effectively use you as an example of, to be feared, left-wing lunacy, and there-by discredit the Left to those inclined to listen valid criticisms, but not deranged fanatical ravings.

worst way) a chance to play it for their “self….which is, of course, exactly how
they’re getting ‘played’ already, anyhow’

So, “Don’t think twice!  It’s just another day in pair-heir-err-a-dice.”  Don’t
want to take the word of an old un-reCONstructed Savage on that?  What’re the
odds Carlos Montes, if asked, will say pretty much the same thing?

If that is the case, then it is very sad that you’ve decided to stay with this organization for 10 years.  Perhaps it is time for you to move on, instead of just “talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk?”

I have attended so many anti-war rallies organized by these folks. They are always the same. Attack Republicans. Blame Republicans for the wars. Bad Republicans. They also REFUSE to allow anybody else but their group to speak or even make announcements at their rallies. That includes not allowing speakers from Impeach For Peace or even announcements from them.

I have spoken to them repeatedly about this. They refuse to budge. I attend meetings, bring it up and they simply ignore it. For the past 10 years I am talking about.

The other guy Adam, asked if he could make his prepared speech that you heard.

They refused. That is why he felt compelled to “rant” into the microphone.

Michael Cavlan RN,

Maybe you were booted because members of your group were carrying signs that said “Expose the 9/11 cover-up” and FRS did not want conspiracy hacks to fuck it up.

Also, after briefing watching the video, it’s very clear that you came to a rally that organized by other groups with your own agenda.  You then began to shout and scream on a megaphone after leaders of the organization asked you to work in solidarity with them.  At this point, it doesn’t matter what your qualms are with them about free speech, because at that point you started acting like a child.

Even in the Soviet communist police state they used to do it quietly.  When people like Mandelstam and Solzhenitsyn were arrested and sent to the gulag it was just a couple of men in trench coats who showed up at the door and took them away quietly.  The show of force is meant to terrorize the neighborhood.  They treat the public here like the civilian population in a war zone.  It is standard policy to terrorize the civilian population in both cases.  Shock and Awe.  We are the enemy.

This man is part of an organization Freedom Road Socialists which actually ejected myself and others from an anti-war rally in Minneapolis, simply because we had some anti-Obama chants in 2009.

Then, in deepest irony the organization was targeted by an FBI infiltration and then AG Eric Holder with a Grand Jury Investigation.

Which was personally authorized by….

President Barack Obama.

Do not believe me?

You tube Minneapolis anti-war as long as not Obama

It was all caught on tape. I am the guy that talked of Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Just like Henry Kissinger.

I hope Mr. Montes realizes that the solution does not lie within the democratic party.

Time to vote third party, let’s not give the republican or democrat ‘winner’ more than 50% of the vote, this way it makes it more difficult for them to claim that they have the people’s mandate.

California has been run like a banana republic for a while now. LA is bad, but the Central Valley is even worse since it’s basically a West Coast version of the kind of rural poverty and equality you find in the deep south. The police out here behave like a paramilitary force, communities live with unclean water, schools are losing more and more staff while the well off live in walled neighborhoods in towns like Hanford, Leemore and Madera. Bakersfield looks like it survived “The Road.” The problem is you have no real alternatives, so the poor whites go for the Tea Party and Latinos just keep hoping the Democrats will eventually deliver on all their bullshit promises.
