You Can’t Make Up Republican Candidates Like ThesePosted on Aug 12, 2010The Republican Party’s candidate for governor of Colorado believes that bicycle paths are “part of a greater strategy to rein in American cities under a United Nations treaty.” The party’s Senate candidate in Nevada wants to privatize Medicare and Social Security—and has called for the United States to withdraw from the U.N., though not because of the bicycle conspiracy. And the GOP’s Senate candidate in Connecticut once climbed into a professional wrestling ring and kicked a man in the crotch. I could go on, but you get the point. Democrats may be facing a tough fight this fall, but Republicans are giving them plenty of material to work with. The big political story of the year may turn out to be the consequences of the GOP’s foray into extremism and wackiness. It could be that the party acculturates its not-ready-for-prime-time candidates, harnesses the energy of the tea party movement, and sweeps to a grand old victory. There is also the distinct possibility that the acute philosophical split within the party—basically, a clash between bedrock conservatism and utter nonsense—will hand victories to Democrats that they didn’t anticipate and frankly might not deserve. Anyone who doubts this assessment should reflect on the fact that major figures in the Republican Party are wasting valuable time and energy debating whether the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1868, should be repealed. At issue is birthright citizenship—the amendment’s guarantee that children born here are automatically U.S. citizens, even if their parents are in the country illegally. It’s hard to remember that as recently as three years ago, major figures in the Republican Party such as Lindsey Graham and John McCain were speaking out in favor of sensible, comprehensive immigration reform. But in today’s GOP, which is energized by tea party passion, Graham and McCain want to hold hearings on whether birthright citizenship should be abolished. Many top Republicans have decided that taking a moderate, compassionate stance on illegal immigration—even on the status of innocent newborns—is just too big a risk. Advertisement In several high-profile contests, candidates who won nominations with fervent tea party support appear to be in the process of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The Colorado governorship, for example, would seem to be ripe for the Republicans’ picking. But nominee Dan Maes’ bizarre views about such things as bicycles and the United Nations threaten to deliver the race to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. In Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid seemed in danger of suffering a humiliating loss—until the Republicans nominated the disastrously quotable Sharron Angle. Now it looks as if Reid may pull this one out, unless reporters take Angle’s advice on how to do their jobs. “We needed to have the press be our friend,” she told an astonished Carl Cameron of Fox News. “We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported.” Not all of the GOP’s internal issues involve the tea party. In Connecticut, Linda McMahon won the party’s Senate nomination through one of the traditional routes: She bought it by spending part of her personal fortune, which comes from the WWE pro-wrestling empire. The problem is, ahem, the nature of the WWE wrestling empire—and the fact that McMahon occasionally appeared as a character in the ring. “Today the party of Bob Dole, Jack Kemp and Dick Lugar nominated a candidate who kicks men in the crotch, thinks of scenes of necrophilia as ‘entertainment’ and runs an operation where women are forced to bark like dogs,” a Democratic Party spokesman wrote, in what promises to be just an opening salvo. Then again, association with pro wrestling may not be a deal-breaker at the polls. Just ask Jesse “The Body” Ventura, former governor of Minnesota. Democrats would be foolish to take a single contest for granted, but Republicans would be equally foolish to assume that some kind of sweeping win in November is guaranteed. The GOP already knows what the Democrats’ campaign themes will be—but has no idea what some of its own candidates will say or do next. Tobysgirl: didn’t know they used condemned meat in school lunches, but nothing surprises me now-a-days. This may also be a cause in obesity rates to rise in children as we have seen in the last 10+ years, that and the dumbing down of the population.
Actually allowing the elected idiots to live in the same type of barracks our military does would be to good for them.I was thinking more on the line of pig stys-dirty of course, as they are all dirty, greedy hogs, wallowing in the slop of the lobbyists and special interest. Some just more than others. The dirtier they are, the more anti-American they are in their dealings with the lives of the American people, like holding up extended unemployment benefits, claiming they are unfunded. Nothing is further from the truth that that comment. Employees pay half of the unemployment in their taxes well before they ever receive their paychecks and the other half comes from employers, whether they have ever had one of their employees ever collect benefits from this fund. How John “Boner” the bonehead and the repukes claim it is unfunded I don’t know, but since they are that brain dead to the truth and facts, it is past time to fire them from the jobs they now hold, as they have proven that they are totally unqualified for public office and it becomes clearer every day.

purplewolf, I think our elected officials should live in barracks that are good enough for soldiers, eat school lunches for all their meals (condemned meat is often sent to the school lunch program), and have the same health care that the person with the least access to care has. And be subject to mandatory drug testing.
I suspect we would get a much better quality of elected official if life weren’t so cozy in Washington, D.C. for SOME people.

Eugene Robinson is not exactly correct that the 14th Amendment guarantees birth citizenship, even to illegals. Actually, a close reading and study of the writings of those who wrote the amendment reveal otherwise.
The actual amendment says only that persons born in the United States, and “SUBJECT TO THE JURISDICTION THEREOF” are full citizens.
The intent, the writers explained, was to give full citizenship to former slaves. The intent was not, they further explained, to give full citizenship to children of foreigners. Thus, if a diplomat gave birth in the US, her child was not automatically a citizen. Why? Because the child was not “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States.
Thus, if a person is here in the US legally, and gives birth, but the child is NOT automatically a US citizen, then certainly the same would be true for someone who is here ILLEGALLY.

Tropic girl:8-13 10:52am- Bush orchestrated this military style crack down on the American public including going after anyone who said anything he felt might hamper his success in winning the Iraqi War in his 2 terms in office. Also during the republican campaign for 2008, we witnessed that super troopers and military were often used to repress the public, this happened often and was reported in Truthdig while it was happening. It did not just start this year or this president, it started long ago.
Wildflower: AS for Boner’s comment about “the governments ability to provide basic services” would that include butt kissing service to the repukes? As they are incapable of providing the basic services the average America had worked for and paid for in this country like unemployment for instance. It is reported by Boehners fellow good old boys that he is in the bars by 5pm, 6pm at the latest, every night and it shows. He always looks like he just woke up, half closed eyes and he or just coming out of a stupor. Also what he says seems whacked much of the time. Any what’s up with that orange tan?
UreKismet: Unfortunately, the average person, who should be the ones running for elected office as they are the ones who know what it is like to live in the “real world” rather than the fantasy world of the rich who run(ruin) things here in America and around the world as they deem their right to do don’t have the funding or sources it takes to run for elected office today. A friend of mine said they need to find people who do not want to run for the presidency and V.P. position and take the top 2 winners and appoint them into these positions as they would probably do a better job of running this country that the rich spoiled elite we have today.
Has anyone ever thought of demanding that all of those running for and in elected office be tested for drug use and abuse? That may explain some of the totally irrational things coming out of their mouths and aren’t they the very same ones demanding that the “little people” be drug tested to receive benefits that they have paid for in their taxes like unemployment, disability, social security. It has been suggested in my local newspaper that the poor be drug tested to rent apartments in my city now, glad I own my house.
We need to hold these “elected service people” to the same standards that regular people are made to do, minimum wage only(and in the case of Mitch McConnell less than $2 per hour, as this is a tip job-lobbyists), no benefits, no life time retirement and medical plus perks packages for 6 years of elected service, no 401K, etc…perhaps if and when they really got to the level of reality that is everyday life in America they could truly represent the real American public and not only the richest less than 2% of the population.

It’s not just the tea party crazies, Eugene. Many Republican mainstreamers have also gone off the deep end. State of Ohio Representative John Boehner is a fine example. When it comes to the so called “counterinsurgency campaign,” Republicans like Boehner ramble on and on saying stuff like:
“. . . An effective counterinsurgency campaign is based on demonstrating to FRIENDS and foes a strong political commitment to improving both the security environment and the government’s ability to provide basic services.” [Quote: Ohio’s Rep John Boehner]
YET, when it comes to an something like building a Muslim community center a few blocks away from “Ground Zero” Republican speeches change and they’re spewing out rhetoric implying that ANY AND ALL Muslims - including U.S. citizens who just happen to be of the Muslim faith - are responsible for 9/11:
“. . . The decision to build this mosque so close to Ground Zero is deeply troubling, as is the president’s decision to endorse it . . . “We can never forget that terrible day, and the heroes who lost their lives - often in the hope that others might live. We honor their memory and their sacrifice, always.” [Quote: Ohio’s Rep. John Boehner]
The point is not only are Republican mainstreamers like Ohio’s Representative Boehner racists, bigots, and Constitutional hypocrites but they’re also DUMB. Is it any wonder that the “war” in Afghanistan continues to go on and on. Who in their right mind would ever trust stupid blatant hypocrites like Boehner?

Every voter knows the system is broken, but nobody seems to know how to fix it. Since our politicians, who look like decent, normal people on the surface, don’t act like something is wrong there must be hidden reasons the problems don’t get solved.
Hence the frenzied, strained search for the hidden “truth”, and the wacko pandering.
Truth is the problems are all known and fixable. Trouble is one of the problems is that weak/bought politicians are the root of the problem.
Someone on the left needs to harness this energy and direct it for constructive change. It is, and is going to, find an outlet, currently that’s Gohmert-style (or any of these others) lunacy.

So sad! When are amerikans going to wake up and realise that their two party duopoly creates a conformist and oppressive society as bad as any other police state.
Three years out of four amerikans articulate a wide ranging discussion on all manner of pertinent issues, then in the fourth year the population splits into to rigid segments each segment ‘getting behind’ a cliche of a human being who mouths truisms, idiocies and lies like there was no tommorow.
The most annoying part of that is the differences of opinion between the two points of view being expressed by the ‘party platform’ are confined to tiny areas of concern that don’t impinge on any of the big issues of interest to citizens.
“Gay Marriage” is a classic example of this. I know plenty of gay people none of whom have any desire to emulate bourgois mediocrity yet gay marriage is a burning issue despite the fact most gay men and women don’t have an interest in it. Those who stand on the other side of the issue barely know any gay people so the odds are this issue won’t effect them either.
Meanwhile both parties run away from the issues that amerikans are interested in but which divide them. That is whether amerika should be slaughtering millions of humans overseas with money that could be used to feed, house, educate, and care for citizens at home. Or, when are politicians going to be made to sever all ties with the rich who fund both sides of these meaningless ‘debates’.
Even though amerikans elected an unwhite human as prez last time, a great many unwhite citizens were subjected to the same denial of the right to vote that their parents and grandparents thought they had defeated in 1964. Oblamblam was elected by white voters because in too many polling booths unwhite citizens were unjustly denied their political rights because they were wrongly accused of being a felon. No one addresses that for the same reason Gore didn’t contest the 2000 result.
Both parties have many voting iregularity scams which neither party wants to air.
Why has politics become the purview of the rich in amerika? There are no normal humans, that is those on average incomes, anywhere near national political positions, yet no one seems to question this.
A good first step would be for people to force states to adopt strong and similar legislation which would allow full participation in the process by citizens from outside the duopoly of dems and rethugs.
Until then, politics in amerika will remain a minority interest followed by the gullible or the complicit.
To think amerikans’ self deception extends to a belief they have a great political system.

There haven’t been any bedrock conservatives in congress in 20 years. No conservative person would have gone through the fiasco of Republican stunts in the Clinton years, much less the out and out insanity of the current period. These people (the Basic Republican Party now)are more radical than the Weathermen of the 60’s, and infinitely more likely to bring the nation down. This is an organised revolution of the oligarchy. JDmysticDJ hit the nail on the head with his comments. I was trying to figure out what is threatening about ‘sustainability’, which is a goal my under-served community is striving for. I had no idea it was a Commie Plot by the UN and the ‘New World Order’. Of course, the ‘Defense’ Department [correct that to ‘Offensive’] is threatening to bring in another 1000 Marines, and their twin-roter Vertical Take-off Helicopters, for combat training on our Island. Now, I view that as a much bigger threat than a bunch of farmers growing their own seed crops, or even building a few bike paths.
Then, there is the mass paranoia and the ever growing spying by the government and private companies for their own gain. I am getting pretty damned tired of being treated like a criminal by my own Government. Surveillance Cameras [donated by the State Tourist Agency], x-rays at the airport, and my new favorite: photo ID and a written Prescription EVERY time I refill my pain meds. Why? because according to my doctor, tens of thousands of people are cheating and/or selling their meds.
I wonder what that little FDA requirement is going to do for the bottom line of the Big Pharma and the Insurance Companies? Remember when Reagan said that the reason for high medical costs was all the little old ladies running to see their Doctor when they got lonely? Now, it is mandated, lonely or not!

You ask,
“What business does an international agency have making laws for local governments, I ask?”
That is a distortion, and misleading. This United Nations agency only makes recommendations, not laws. Personally, I like the word “United” it indicates inclusiveness, rather than exclusiveness.
There are many agencies and organizations that are more exclusive and more effective at turning their policies into laws, and international agreements. The World Bank, WTO, Federal Reserve, multi-million dollar lobbying firms, well funded think tanks, the Trilateral Commission, the Bilderberg Group/Society, are all very exclusive, and influential in terms of creating laws and international agreements.
Focusing on a relatively small United Nations Agency, and its recommended bike paths, strikes me as being paranoid, and a person who does so appears to be somewhat Looney, to me.
Who is it that first publically spoke of the New World Order, what was his exclusive background, and what were his exclusive affiliations? John R. Bolton, who was an Under Secretary of State for President George H. W. Bush, and a member of the Project for a New American Century (New World Order?) “Was a Strong critic of the United Nations for much of his career. In a 1994 Global Structures Convocation hosted by the World Federalist Association (now Citizens for Global Solutions), he stated, “There is no such thing as the United Nations. There is only the international community, which can only be led by the only remaining superpower, which is the United States.” Oddly, Bolton was a “Recess appointment” to be the U.S. Representative to the United Nations in 2005.
I think that your fears of a New World Order are misplaced, and wrong headed.
I wonder why people such as you fear “Our Government” while serving the interests of those who are the real threat to participatory Democracy, and real freedom.
You say of Eugene Robinson,
“Gene wouldn’t have the intelligence to warn the passengers on the titanic if it were halfway in the water!”
People of your intelligence, would be punching additional holes in the hull of the Titanic, and attempting to recruit the passengers to aid you in your endeavors.

Oh yes lots of Republicans are idiots, but then they still keep getting elected..
So what difference does it make?
How frustrating for progressives, when a lunatic gets elected, and they have to endure, the politics they provide. But then, condescension doesn’t usually bring in too many votes either.
Look at it this way, the Republican and Democratic parties are symbiotic.
The Republicans, turn people into victims, and then the Democrats create programs that help give-away money to those that suffer because of Republican policies.
What the Democrats don’t do is prevent those Republican policies from happening in the first place, so people never become victims, but instead they can work and support themselves without the help of a government give-away.
What Democrats don’t understand, is that people don’t want to be turned into victims by anyone.
People prefer freedom.

Loony anyone? (People voted for Bachmann, remember this).

Yeah, Maxine Waters has been a touchstone for abuse by the right forever, just like Barney Frank. She may not even actually have committed an offense, but is being hung out to dry anyway.
No, if you want a Dim loony to match up with Michelle Bachmann, you gotta go with Eric Massa, the “Tickle King”...HE stands up to MB for weirdness.

Democratic politicians do that—timocratic politicians would never do that if we would have any.
And a democratic collumnist is surprised about ‘unexpected’ behavior of a democratic politician.
As if a democratic politician [and the only kind we have in US, canada, india..]ever strays from the old-beaten path!!
Well, i don’t know of any democratic priest or politician, ‘educator’ in US and many other lands who ever changed his/her mind.
Mother teresa did that, but she wasn’t a politician, priest, nor democrat[ic].
She, as we know, came and saw god no more, no more, no more…
Democratic and godful politicians do exterminate indigenes, kill chidlren, a-bomb people, etc., but a democratic MSM hackaway-never backaway could not make that up.
I couldn’t make up that godless communists did not hack away khazaks, uzbeks, tajiks, armenians, kirghizians, turkmen, et al nor a-bombed anyone!
This must be surprise to lots of americans. Would they say a bohunk made this up? We’ll see! tnx
PS. I undrstand that bohunk derives from the word “bohemian”; i.e., a czech artist.

It’s baffling. No matter how crazy, incompetent, greedy and blatantly anti-government and anti-ordinary people the Republicans get, they still pretty much run the country, even when they aren’t in power. And why do so many tens of millions of Americans support them when they obviously care nothing about those people?
I think it is because the Republicans have been so successful in demonizing the left, the progressives. That’s why people vote Republican, because no matter how bad the Republicans are, these people hate us more. They just exude hatred for the left.

What you have to keep in mind is the Republicans sacred belief that government is the problem. So when a Republican gets elected, it’s his solemn duty to screw up as much as he can so people will see how bad the government is. When they’re out of power, they work to derail any democratic effort to show government in a good light. Why do you think they hate Clinton so much. But the really sad truth is that this Demo vs Repub stuff is simply theater. Your government has been hijacked by the wealthy, and dire straits are ahead.

This is the sponsoring organization for the bikes—
““CLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of
local governments and national and regional local government organizations
that have made a commitment to sustainable development. More than 1000
cities, towns, counties, and their associations in 68 countries comprise ICLEI’s
growing membership. ICLEI works with these and hundreds of other local
governments through international performance-based, results-oriented
campaigns and programs. It provides technical consulting, training, and
information services to build capacity, share knowledge, and support local
government in the implementation of sustainable development at the local
level. ICLEI’s basic premise is that locally designed initiatives can provide an
effective and cost-efficient way to achieve local, national,
and global sustainability objectives.”“
THE CANDIDATE IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT IN THIS POSITION. Gene wouldn’t have
the intelligence to warn the passengers on the titanic if it were halfway in the
water!
What business does an international agency have making laws for local
governments, I ask? I would suggest looking at the rest of these initiatives and
see if the social engineering involved agrees with your personal morals and
ethics.
When people talk about the dangers of the New World Odor, this is exactly
what is feared. Point is, they won’t stop at providing bikes. Do you really need
the government to provide your every need? And who decided on what the
“results” should be and whether its ok to hurt someone to achieve those
“results”?
Just a cursory investigation of this group shows some their current main
objectives, recommendations to local governments on how to deal with Climate
Change, formerly known as Global Warming, including using state and local
FUNDING. Specifically, using local governments to spread the theory of Climate
Change, including in the school system, add more government restrictions to
buy certain products, and USE of LOCAL TAX MONEY to do this. Its in their
literature.
And besides, Denver is well on its way to becoming a “police-state”. Most
people were surprised at how easily they were put on lockdown during the
recent Democratic Convention…. what if you say anything bad about the
“international recommendations” now? ... they’ve already been pegged.
As Denver’s Rocky Mountain News reported, ““Hundreds of heavily armed
officers, some clad in riot gear or hanging off SUVs, are saturating Denver’s
streets in unprecedented numbers, quickly isolating any hint of trouble that
could tarnish the city’s reputation under the limelight of the Democratic
National Convention.
To deal with potential mass arrests, the city has opened a temporary detention
center—a warehouse divided into chain-link cells. Critics of the security
crackdown have dubbed the site “Gitmo on the Platte,” after Denver’s South
Platte River.
The authorities have also attempted to restrict protesters to a so-called “free
speech zone,” the Orwellian term they have given to an isolated patch of a
parking lot ringed by two layers of black steel security fencing, giving it the
appearance of a detention camp.
The force of 1,500 officers brought in from 52 police agencies in nearby areas
does not include a huge federal contingent that has been mobilized for the
event.”“
Nice city.

Perhaps this is how it ends.
The US has become so anti-intellectual that we have elected the likes of Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, BushII, and Obama (not to mention the never ending train of idiot frat boys in the senate and house) Since Nixon, we have been afraid to vote for anyone deemed smarter than us (keep in mind, carter and clinton were smart men, they just spoke with a southern accent, so we mistook them for morons)Because smart people, like Nixon, would rip us off, betray our trust.
Fast forward to today, we have become a nation built on the Peter Principal. The USA has been sold to the highest corporate bidder by meatheads that we the people gleefully elected. And we will continue to do it, because as Hunter Thompson once said, we are caught in a downward spiral of dumbness.

A clash between “bedrock conservatism and utter nonsense”? I’d make it “fractured bedrock conservatism.” Breakage resulting from unquestioning fealty to George W. Bush.
Conservatives in the bedrock Barry Goldwater mold support (1) limited government, (2) controlled spending, (3) low taxes, (4) individual liberty, (5) the rule of law, (6) decentralization, (7) restrained executive authority and (8) cautious foreign intervention.
Of the eight conservative standards just listed, Bush adhered to just one: low taxes, notably in cutting taxes in topmost income brackets. Even that proved disastrous mainly because Bush insisted on making war without paying for it. It is called living in the moment.
By taking a sledgehammer to their bedrock principles, Republicans left themselves vulnerable to further shattering, courtesy of the extremists and wackos cited here by Eugene Robinson. It indeed could become the big political story of 2010.

The WORST thing Democrats can do is not take these maniacs seriously. Who ACTUALLY took Ronald Reagan seriously at the start of the campaign season in 1980? Look at Michelle Bachmann or James Imhofe. How could ignorant lunatics like this EVER be elected in American?
Yet they are.
But as long as myopic tunnel vision fools like Bob Menendez (On of my two senators, both lousy) keep spouting mind-numbing drivel that only party hacks appreciate, the loonies that Gene speaks of have a chance.
There’s no way the GOP loons can win, unless the deaf and blind Dim morons give it to them.

It’s a strange world when politicians don’t even bother to pretend to represent the people of the U.S. Come out in favor of looting the treasury even more to give our tax dollars to their well-heeled cronies. The extreme positions comming out over a community center in NY shows their hand. They would like to be in total control over which Constitutional protections people are entitled to.
The would like for our Country to become a theocracy where they will be held up as heroes. They’ve said as much by suggesting that the Constitution should be governed by the bible. Well we fought a revolutionary war for the right to worship however we choose and no one can usurp that right.
