Why the United States Is Destroying Its Education System

A nation that destroys its systems of education, degrades its public information, guts its public libraries and turns its airwaves into vehicles for cheap, mindless amusement becomes deaf, dumb and blind. It prizes test scores above critical thinking and literacy. It celebrates rote vocational training and the singular, amoral skill of making money. It churns out stunted human products, lacking the capacity and vocabulary to challenge the assumptions and structures of the corporate state. It funnels them into a caste system of drones and systems managers. It transforms a democratic state into a feudal system of corporate masters and serfs.

Teachers, their unions under attack, are becoming as replaceable as minimum-wage employees at Burger King. We spurn real teachers—those with the capacity to inspire children to think, those who help the young discover their gifts and potential—and replace them with instructors who teach to narrow, standardized tests. These instructors obey. They teach children to obey. And that is the point. The No Child Left Behind program, modeled on the “Texas Miracle,” is a fraud. It worked no better than our deregulated financial system. But when you shut out debate these dead ideas are self-perpetuating.

Passing bubble tests celebrates and rewards a peculiar form of analytical intelligence. This kind of intelligence is prized by money managers and corporations. They don’t want employees to ask uncomfortable questions or examine existing structures and assumptions. They want them to serve the system. These tests produce men and women who are just literate and numerate enough to perform basic functions and service jobs. The tests elevate those with the financial means to prepare for them. They reward those who obey the rules, memorize the formulas and pay deference to authority. Rebels, artists, independent thinkers, eccentrics and iconoclasts—those who march to the beat of their own drum—are weeded out.

“Imagine,” said a public school teacher in New York City, who asked that I not use his name, “going to work each day knowing a great deal of what you are doing is fraudulent, knowing in no way are you preparing your students for life in an ever more brutal world, knowing that if you don’t continue along your scripted test prep course and indeed get better at it you will be out of a job. Up until very recently, the principal of a school was something like the conductor of an orchestra: a person who had deep experience and knowledge of the part and place of every member and every instrument. In the past 10 years we’ve had the emergence of both [Mayor] Mike Bloomberg’s Leadership Academy and Eli Broad’s Superintendents Academy, both created exclusively to produce instant principals and superintendents who model themselves after CEOs. How is this kind of thing even legal? How are such ‘academies’ accredited? What quality of leader needs a ‘leadership academy’? What kind of society would allow such people to run their children’s schools? The high-stakes tests may be worthless as pedagogy but they are a brilliant mechanism for undermining the school systems, instilling fear and creating a rationale for corporate takeover. There is something grotesque about the fact the education reform is being led not by educators but by financers and speculators and billionaires.”

Teachers, under assault from every direction, are fleeing the profession. Even before the “reform” blitzkrieg we were losing half of all teachers within five years after they started work—and these were people who spent years in school and many thousands of dollars to become teachers. How does the country expect to retain dignified, trained professionals under the hostility of current conditions? I suspect that the hedge fund managers behind our charter schools system—whose primary concern is certainly not with education—are delighted to replace real teachers with nonunionized, poorly trained instructors. To truly teach is to instill the values and knowledge which promote the common good and protect a society from the folly of historical amnesia. The utilitarian, corporate ideology embraced by the system of standardized tests and leadership academies has no time for the nuances and moral ambiguities inherent in a liberal arts education. Corporatism is about the cult of the self. It is about personal enrichment and profit as the sole aim of human existence. And those who do not conform are pushed aside.

“It is extremely dispiriting to realize that you are in effect lying to these kids by insinuating that this diet of corporate reading programs and standardized tests are preparing them for anything,” said this teacher, who feared he would suffer reprisals from school administrators if they knew he was speaking out. “It is even more dispiriting to know that your livelihood depends increasingly on maintaining this lie. You have to ask yourself why are hedge fund managers suddenly so interested in the education of the urban poor? The main purpose of the testing craze is not to grade the students but to grade the teacher.”

“I cannot say for certain—not with the certainty of a Bill Gates or a Mike Bloomberg who pontificate with utter certainty over a field in which they know absolutely nothing—but more and more I suspect that a major goal of the reform campaign is to make the work of a teacher so degrading and insulting that the dignified and the truly educated teachers will simply leave while they still retain a modicum of self-respect,” he added. “In less than a decade we been stripped of autonomy and are increasingly micromanaged. Students have been given the power to fire us by failing their tests. Teachers have been likened to pigs at a trough and blamed for the economic collapse of the United States. In New York, principals have been given every incentive, both financial and in terms of control, to replace experienced teachers with 22-year-old untenured rookies. They cost less. They know nothing. They are malleable and they are vulnerable to termination.”

Response: Dear Brethren, why complain? Or does anyone think that what we have to read, respective any postings herein, or columnists essays, isn’t take in the same light???

BUT! Do you hear us complaining about misspellings, typos, or run-on sentences? NO!!!!!

Why?

As we have said everyone has an unalienable right antecedent to the establishment of any Social Compact, to express their opinions as they deem necessary.

Even though at sometimes, they might be tedious to read so to speak, we should at least act civilly towards their efforts!

Why?

As it has been said, e.g., “out of the mouths of babes!” And I’m not referring to the wanton curvaceous natures of those that drives many of us to enjoy our Cockburns!!!

MUST you keep printing the same paragraphs again and again filled with blathering run-on sentences?

My point about Laffer and the Laffer Curve is that ultimately, it wasn’t actually, wrong, but the inferences drawn from it were INTENTIONALLY inappropriate and therefore, not just wrong, but evil.

There’s actually not much new in the Laffer Curve.  Backward-bending curves in economics are common when there is a constraint mechanism.

It’s not so complicated.  It goes back to the “dumbing down of America” that began with the Reagan administration. In ignorant people is much easier to manipulate and control.  So shut up and get back to work.

Laffer’s premise is based on the idea that if the government takes 0% of income, revenue is zero.  Plus, if the government takes 100% of everyone’s income, nobody will work and therefore revenue should also be zero (with a few minor tweaks to the model).

Therefore, simple logic tells us that as the tax rate increases from zero, revenue will increase as well.  But SOMEWHERE, that next tax increase MUST force revenue to fall, in order to reach that 100% rate, zero revenue point.

But Laffer’s HUGE mistake was assuming where that SOMEWHERE (technically, called a “Turning Point”) fell.  Like all economists, he drew a “smooth” curve, which made it look like the turning point was 50% (including federal, state and local taxes).  But, he, Ronald Reagan, and the so-called “conservatives” jumped on the excuse for a tax cut without any evidence whatsoever.  David Stockman admitted that it was all a phony and was “taken to the woodshed” for it.

In fact, evidence shows that the “turning point” seems to be closer to 90% rather than 50%.”

Response: Besides all the misuses, mistakes, the assumptions clearly point out the curvaceous nature was incorrect. At least we both agree on this point of reference.

But I presume we hold very different views both legally and lawfully, respective to what is and what isn’t income and/or income taxes, other than what jurisprudence and Congressional records refer to as corporate taxes extracted for re-venue purposes as capital gains!

And what people will perform for their livelihood, you’d be totally surprised, even to their own demise!!!

I’ve ordered the Jacoby book.  The amazon.com review says she is
a scholarly progeny of Richard Hofstatder. That in itself bothers me. 
Borrowing an opening quote of Aldous Huxley in his Point Counter
Point,
out of a brothersjudd review of Hofstatder, “The course of
every intellectual, if he pursues his journey long and unflinchingly
enough, ends in the obvious, from which the non-intellectuals have
never stirred. “brothersjudd did not give Hofstatder’s text too high a
rating:  a D, calling it wrongheaded.  Reading his writings, I can see
why.

Demographics change for a number of reasons.  Immigration is a
big reason. Migration from one part of the country to another if the
country is big enough, as is the US, also is a factor.  For instance,
California was perceived from the 60s onward as the land of milk
and honey. Many Americans from all over the US moved to California
seeking their fortune. I’m raising my own hand in doing that.  Also a
migrant field worker influx served to change the once agrarian platform
of the state with pockets of urbanization around San Francisco, Los
Angeles, and San Diego the north, mid-state, and south having most
of the incoming new residents.  The state went from predominantly an
agrarian economy to an industrial and technology economy and the
aggregate attitude changed from the more conservative farmers tended
to be to more liberal which urban folks tend to be.  This makes for a
fluidity in intellectualism.  A change in demographics can account
for an everchanging kalidescope of political opinions. This does not
have much to do with intelligence but a whole lot with intellectualism. 
So contrasting intellectualism with intelligence does seems to be
something needing clarification. 

I think it can safely be said that intelligence is an excellence of mind
that is availed within a relatively narrow, predictable and immediate
range. It works within the mental scaffolding of minimal but precise
goals and winnows out questions that don’t appear to be helpful in
reaching those goals. Intellect is, in contrast, the more contemplative
or critical side of thinking.  Intelligence hunts around its world to
understand, manipulate, change the order of things for better efficiency,
make adjustments for a more advantageous negotiation with the
external milieu, where intellect examines, wonders, and meditates on
experiences or imagined experiences, that is, ideas, then theorizes with
a dose of criticism the nature of those experiences.

A succinct definition that seems to me to be the best cut through the
chase that I’ve read is that “an intellectual is someone who deals in
pure ideas, that is, ideas untested by reality.” 

Intellectual as a term has evolved to mean anyone who believes that
those untested ideas ought to be given a trial run on society!  If so,
it is not a stretch to imagine why Americans have developed a bit of
an allergy to intellectualism and why, it is said leftists are disturbed by
it.  But it ought not to since it is the essential nature of the intellect to
oppose the existing order not submit to it!  I see that as a basic feature
of liberalism of the species to which I subscribe.  On the other hand,
libertarians and anarchists also have an element of this rebellious
impulse.  Conservatives in contrast prefer to slavishly worship at the
temple of their provincialism, being xenophobic of immigrants and
most of the non-white world, and paranoid about the equitable
redistribution of the country’s wealth.

I see Jacoby’s 2008 book also as descending Richard Wolin’s 2004
book, The Seduction of Unreason, mentioned earlier.  If not an
exact facsimile, Jacoby follows what she sees as having happened in
America fairly close to what Wolin perceived.  Wolin takes on all of the
Western world, and the attention to the anti-intellectualism that came
into fashion after WWII.

I don’t see why not, if they have the same attitudes.  Just because people work hard doesn’t mean they’re doing something good.  Many people work hard at doing evil.

For whomever herein, who are open-minded, we’d like to proffer certain reading material than we’ve previously presented for consideration. Only for exposing others to possibilities and considerations offered by others who’ve considered the plight, which many face today!

Such ideas as expressed in Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, We the Living and Anthem are all very powerful books that will give you a new positive perspective on what it means to be a free thinking and free acting people. All of “Ayn Rand’s” books clearly demonstrate the ill effects of government on free people who wish to act in accordance with their own minds. Rand was neither a liberal nor conservative yet both groups can learn a lot from her writing.

As it relates personally to Rand, we for one thought she was an anomaly of extreme importance in her day and age and worth reflecting upon in the current scheme of things so to speak, as it relates to education and its current demise or reasons therefore. Many disliked her because she claimed to support individual rights above all else, she supported taking away the most fundamental individual right of all - life.

But there are those herein, would have us believe that the spirit of individualism and freedom to think and act on one’s own is purely adolescent while subjecting yourself to the powers of the state is evidence of a sound and mature mind.

To this we say, what could be more Objectivist than figuring out solutions to a scheme to defraud every individual in any society, a scheme so big that for the people to hold the perpetrators accountable, would collapse the entire framework of any social compact?

Whether Rand or you believe, that the way to a better society is everyone looking out for themselves solely where everyone taking care of their own self-interest will somehow magically create a better society for all matters little…failing to consider both sides of the coin related to any social order established will eventually create friction. And friction to some is just “good business!”

Depending on whether you’re the object of business or the captains thereof, will depend on your introspection as to whether the means justify the ends!

Evil has many names, but proponents of Rand’s philosophy of “self-regulating” can proximately cause whatever industry to rape in self-interest. All the while, believing they are ethical and moral in doing so, since “by everyone looking out for their own self-interest to the best of their abilities, the community as a whole will benefit.

This is called the trickle-down philosophy which fosters the fallacy that tax cuts for the rich create jobs. This led to the world of CDS which almost brought the world to a severe depression.

Doesn’t anyone remember what a laughter the Laffer Curve was? And if I remember correctly, even Laffer later in life admitted the Laffer Curve had been proven wrong.

The poor keep getting dumber and the stupid (meaning: they know what they’re doing is wrong) elected common people in the US, let them eat cake. No need for better general education, medical care, ridding the streets of gangs, creating living so-called wages and equal opportunities for people of all races, stopping illegal immigrants, when these felons know that to prosecute all of them, would bring the entire social compact to its demise!
We have a history of “righting” ourselves when the chips are down….as for Rand her books may be considered amateurish with little merit but the answer lies in the literacy rate and the ability of people to grasp issues that can entangle a society and not look to bumper sticker ideas for solutions and rally around leaders who are of the same caliber….republican or democrat….. does not enter the equation

This is nonsense, by definition.  Furthermore, beholders
can and do include artists themselves, which is only conspicuously so. 
” One wonders if the “it” one is referring to, isn’t the artist in
retrospective consideration as the creative force behind any intent to
care or not to care!”
  Also nonsense and wafting rhetoric.  That is
projection on your part.

Once a work is complete and the artist offers it to the world, it has an
existence of its own, just as a baby has when offspring are born.  The
artwork is no longer in the artist’s authority.  He/she may not in some
cases legally even have the right to destroy it if its ownership has been
transferred, although others could, such as the murals the governor of

because it portrayed labor unions in a benevolent light. The work might
be sold in which case the ownership changes from the artist to the
beholder.

What I mean by the artist not having authority over a work that is
complete and put into the public domain, or even at times when kept
within the artist possession but is made publicly known to whatever
degree, is that it is a finished work and as long as it exists in
someone’s mind as a memory, it cannot be taken back or destroyed by
the artist.  It becomes a property of the world.  Take the transitory arts
of performance, for instance.  Once a performance has been done, that
particular event no longer exists yet it resides in the minds of the
audience, assuming they were paying attention.  Some performances are
unforgettable and archived in history books or nowadays on DVD’s as
are performances by the Alvin Ailey dance group.  Richard Burton’s
portrayal of Reverend Dr. T. Lawrence Shannon in Night of the Iguana,
was committed to film and hence we have opportunity to see his artistic
cinematic skills, but his performances on Broadway of King Arthur in
Camelot that received rave reviews are mostly lost since each day’s
work slipped into history unless taped for posterity.  But then only one
performance out of many would have been saved.  All the others last
only in memory.  Memories fade or die with the individual who has
them. But the artwork, in a manner of speaking, never dies.  It would
seem that much of the value of art is in the mind although it could have
some material value were the materials used of commercial worth, such
as gold or other precious metal or gems. 

The point is that while art does have a life of its own, I still maintain
that the artwork itself knows no owner, as a thing in itself, it has no
emotional attachments, while those who are its audience or observers
do and that is its power.  To be detached things yet hold amazing
chains or fetters on those who experience it.

And of course art can be discussed without the artist and whatever
their creative reasoning might have been!  The absurdity of holding
that view is proven by the artworks from ancient times when motives
can never really be known, and we incessantly talk about them.  But
even today one does not know what the artist was thinking when in
the throes of creating a work.  Even the artist themselves often thinks
about other things as they go about making their works.  They have
some idea but then the process more or less takes over and the work
almost makes itself.  As an artist, I have first hand experience of this
action.  So to talk about any particular work it is completely naive to
think an artist has to be present in some form or another.  It is nearly
all speculation.  But think what you want as you seem to have a
preconditioned and predetermined idea of what art is.

To anybody who’s interested: I think it serves the general well being of forums such as this to have a name for the particular type of troll that is Orbus Unum.  He/She has changed tactics, and seems to be constructing a more coherent and compact form of distraction.  Chris Hedges article was on various failings of the US educational system.  It seems the various disruptive tactics of these trolls need indentified and named so they can be quickly ignored if that is the readers preference.  I suppose they’ll just change identities. 

Jojo Bar Du: I agree with you, the PC, the self esteem BS must go, also, the partisanship and polarization of the issue.  The teachers union must be forced to change priorities from n organization that protects teachers regardless of competency to one that protects the reputation of the profession itself.  Along with this, we need to attack that ‘culture of ignorance’ that lets the student think they can treat their teachers with anything other than complete respect. 

Anarchisse: 90% of your post agrees with Chris Hedges criticisms of the intellectual class, abandoning the causes of the left (selling out). But it’s obvious from this snippet: ” Intellectuals usually take the classist, quasi-racist view that they are a higher order of being unjustly put upon by a mass of worthless troglodytes.” that you interests lie in prolonging the popular anti-intellectual fallacies, and trying to make the extreme examples of poor behavior by intellectuals the norm.  This is the fallacy transference of specific to the general case. 

You know something?  A lot of people who are portrayed as ‘intellectuals’, just worked very hard to learn, and shouldn’t be lumped in with the very few, but very visible ‘snobs’.  Part of the problem is that there are indeed underachievers who just didn’t do the work to prosper.  They resent those who do the damn difficult and respectable work of learning.  And, given your comments, forget my recommendation about reading the book, I don’t think you’ll learn anything there.

I will state again that there is a strong sub-culture of ignorance that is used and reinforced by a pluto-corpo-oligarchic class for both commercial exploitation and political purposes.  I submit that this is a root cause of the negative drift of our economy and standard of living, and unless understood and checked will ultimately destroy all wealth, even that accumulated by the current supporters, the high, mid and low level supporters of the ‘unlimited growth / drill baby drill / unfettered free market’ ideology.  These ‘philosophies’ worked great in the short term, but are thoroughly destructive to everybody in the long term.  Even those at the top of the plutocracy know this is true, but solutions involving the trends of the masses are extremely slow to change, and easy for other short-term profiteers to thwart. 

In any event, students (future citizens) must understand things like “the dynamics of economies of scale relative to monopoly and the need for uncorrupted regulation by public utility commissions to prevent economic implosion”.  It’s incredible what you can cover in high school if you stop wasting time on all the ‘fluff’ in the curriculum.

As I have said, People are free to express their viewpoints concerning any expression, which they deem is occupationally supportive or otherwise.

As far as questioning whether art can exist outside of the artist’s conception and attempts at preservation, one would be hard pressed to conceptualize whether it existed at all absent the creative beholder thereof! I’m sure we’ve all wondered whether any alleged phenomena occurs “if” such occurs absent any observation or self awareness thereof! 

And again, when one says, e.g., “But art itself has no feelings.  It doesn’t care who appropriates its
creative results.” One wonders if the “it” one is referring to, isn’t the artist in retrospective consideration as the creative force behind any intent to care or not to care!

Therefore, the idea that one could discuss art absent the artist or their creative reasoning thereof, seems an unending circularly sophisticate, which anyone may wish to express. But, as art has a way of entertaining, arising from any creative force, how such force effects self-awareness, must at various points in any discussion lead to either enjoyment or otherwise.

My best to all who post herein, for the purpose of proposing hopeful enlightenment or garnering enlightenment, while proffering Good Will in the interest of seeking Universal Peace with All Walks of Life!

Yes, but is it fascistic?  ‘Anti-intellectualism in American life’, to quote the title of Hofstadter’s famous book, has been going on for a long time, as you say.  It seems to be connected to class struggle.  Typically, professional intellectuals market their goods to ruling-class types, rather than the people in general.  They attach themselves to ruling-class interests.  They have usually been overtly hostile to popular culture (with some recent exceptions which have been generally exploitive in a different way).  The common people return the favor.

Historically, intellectuals have not counted for much in the United States, but where they did count, as in Europe and the Far East, they adhered to centralized and usually despotic power.  This habit was carried through to the 20th century, where a great many of them aligned themselves with either outright fascism, or with the fascistic, authoritarian Communist Parties.

Today, the people in the United States who most ardently promote centralized authority and power in the arts, education, and culture in general, as well as the economy, are those who call themselves ‘progressives’ or ‘liberals’.  It is a somewhat schizzy attitude, since they also profess affection for and belief in freedom, equality, and the liberal rights.  Somehow these good things are to be defended and enlarged by state force.  (The Right has different, but similar contradictions, but has not been as fond of intellectuals, although they have quite a few in their ranks.)

The book you mention will be of interest to me if it treats the class-war aspects of anti-intellectualism in the United States, but I am not hopeful.  Intellectuals usually take the classist, quasi-racist view that they are a higher order of being unjustly put upon by a mass of worthless troglodytes.

Fascists oppose dissidence.  Professional intellectuals, with their jobs in academia, the media, the learned professions and the arts, are usually the last to exhibit dissidence.  This is not to say that anti-intellectualism could not be captured and exploited by fascists; but it would be a cynical, hypocritical exploitation, for anti-intellectualism certainly does not appear to be intrinsically fascistic, but rather the response of an egalitarian instinct to an assumption of superiority.

Rick Scott is proof that Republicans aren’t interested in general education unless it can be made into a profit center for corporations, of course, with no regulation other than “self-regulation”.

This is despite the dismal failure of charter schools, on-line schools, and for-profit colleges. If public schools were 10x as successful they’d still be far worse than they already are. In fact, the ONLY successful on-line schools are college and graduate programs run by existing “not-for-profit” (a misnomer) universities.

Every nation that has risen to power since the industrial revolution has done it by, at the root, vastly expanding general education.  From Bismarck to modern-day China and India, education is seen by dictators and democrats as the key to prosperity.  REAL education, in the sciences and math and technology, and even economics and finance, not in “public relations” or “business”, and certainly not by teaching “creationism” in biology classes.

Even here at home, parents and kids bitch about the “Asian kids” being “so smart”.  Well, folks, most of them aren’t Asian—they are AMERICAN kids, or, at least, Asian-Americans.  But they work like workaholics at school work, going to summer school in ANY subject they don’t have rock-solid.  And, if ANY of our school-age kids are going to save or restore this nation, it’s going to be these kids. Why? BECAUSE THEY ARE FIGHTING TO BE THE BEST EDUCATED!  They shouldn’t be condemned, they should be emulated!

And, before you know it, there will be a NEW “old boys club”.  Skull&Bones; will have had too many George W. Bush-type members whose only asset is their connections.

Did anyone say anything about any artist Orbis?  You appear to
hold a common parochial view of artists’ intentions and what they
produce.  Producing artworks has many purposes and intents, not
the least of which is merely decorative, to please the senses or
ritualistic that indoctrinates meaning into the culture.  I would also
say that art is akin to the human penchant to play, to have fun.  But
most certainly for many other reasons.  From the perspective of the
artwork itself, if you can imagine that! it is really inert, and to be a
bit humorous, is merely exhibitionist in its full bloom.  But then
someone is bound to say that was an emotional expression, which
I would deny!  LOL

Why artworks elicit pleasure may be attributed to such notions as
explaining why using an unlimited range of materials and the certain
configurations of those materials produces psychological responses in
beholders.  Artworks are scientifically known to enhance learning, see

It seems that if humans conduct their life exercising almost exclusively
the functions of the left hemisphere, or the right side, it has been seen
that degenerative brain diseases, for example, Alzheimer Disease,

In terms of teaching and learning, then, it would be advisable to
stimulate the numerous areas of the brain, which would assist the
neurons to establish new connection, thereby expanding our fields of
interest, and enhancing the search “to know ourselves better to act with
more accuracy and precision.”  This seems to be the Socratic injunction. 
To know thyself.

In the case of the art of music, perhaps you have not heard of the
Mozart effect where both the composer, the musician, and the listener

There are unprompted purposes of art that appear to be intrinsic to
humanness, that rise above individual responses because it is
instinctive.  If this can be believed, which I do, then art is a behavior
that humans by their very nature must produce, that can be called the
creativity impulse.  It transcends utility.  There also seems to be a
kinship between humans and the principles of art, such as equilibrium
(balance), rhythm, or harmony that is innate.  It is in the genes.  Also,
the mental activity known as imagination becomes exercised,
unsolicited through formal means, but where symbols, metaphors,
analogies are at work.  Art also functions to allow the mysteriousness
of being, meaning being a live and expressive entity, and a relationship
to the environment (the universe) in which a human finds itself, to be
contemplated.  Another of art’s purposes is to facilitate communication
where individuals may connect with one another. 

Then there are other more pragmatic uses and intentions of art such as
mood changing, ah…entertainments, political conveyances, even
propaganda as I dealt with in my last post, such as what the 20th
century art movements like dadaism perturbingly brought about, and
the so-called avante-garde or experimental or innovation seems to also
be an inherent need, to always find new and better ways of
presentation.

There is even an art, or rather anti-art, that intentionally confronts the
establishment, such as the already mentioned dada, that put into
question the current values.  Then we must endure the anti-anti-artists
as well.  It seems to be a feature of humanness to be rebellious in the
face of stodginess.  And we must not forget the tons of kitsch that
weighs down the planet!

One may say art has no feelings, only if one is solely referring to a lifeless inanimate materiel, which an artist may choose to use expressing the intent of what the eye of the beholder thereof, chooses to “preserve.”

But to say that any artist’s intent is not to express “preservation,” what the eye beholds as a host thereof, as if to give license for misappropriation to whomever, for such intents other than that expressed by an artist’s own intents, fails to partake in the reasoning of the host, to endeavor to express what the eye beholds via whatever form or shape such beholder may give to “preserve” whatever reason any “preservation” may be desired. But “preservation” is the intent of art, whether for the observing artistic host’s self indulgence or in the sharing thereof. 

As far as our own self-indulgence to entertain expressing such reasoning’s, may be consider an artifice of logical presumption. But, one which “preserves” the true perfection of any artist’s reasoning for such behavior and nothing more. Unless expressed by the artist, if they so chose to share such intents with others!

Art becomes associated with intellectuals mainly because of the
intellectuals who infiltrated the various areas of art:  Art History
mainly, but also the philosophy departments especially when post
modernism came waltzing into the halls of learning. Intellectualism
also crept into artmaking as the artists themselves dressed themselves
into the neo this and neo that and created artworks that they thought
reflected the modern/post-modern conceptions.  I am not making
a negative criticism, only a trained observation. 

But art itself has no feelings.  It doesn’t care who appropriates its
creative results.  Art is what it is.  And what it is has been defined
by a host of…intellectuals that included those within the sphere of
psychology as well as philosophy and artists themselves.

If the regimes of fascism used art to further their ideology it is only
because they had someone who understood the power the elements
and principles of art and design have to affect the senses, the emotions
and the mind. The entire regalia of the Nazis was calculated to titillate
the visual senses.  The music, Wagner’s was appropriated to give a
sense of majestic nobility.  It takes the emotions as engendered by the
imagination to stimulate action and emotional images are created in all
of the arts.  The Chinese for instance promoted state art that was in the
thrall and adoration of Mao and highly codified.  The iconography
functioned much as religious art does.  While I, personally find the
ideology repugnant some of the paintings are stunningly beautiful and
a pleasure to look at, which is one function of art, to please sense and
sensibility. Successful propaganda always has some essence of art
involved, as it is the unique force that art has to affect the emotions
that causes positive reactions in the intended viewers.  For instance,
theatrical plays have a huge impact on the human psyche and that is
why we have such masterpieces in drama as well as that phenomena
occurring in all the visual and performing arts. Things artfully created
and well crafted are effective tools of any group, fascist or not.  The
advertising industry is a multibillion dollar enterprise.

Many columnists and posters might consider that what many refer to as psycho babble herein, is provided via their want and desire to see a better reality for themselves and “their” alleged country so to speak, which never really accomplishes anything related to their overall wants or conditions.

Why?

Solely, because their unwilling to think outside the boxes they’ve allowed themselves to be placed in, one way or the other.

They’ve been taught that there are several boxes in which they may orchestrate changes in their lives.

Such as the use of the Jury Box, the Ballot Box and presumable the Box of Last resort, the Cartridge Box.

Not knowing that the boxes they’ve been taught to use, which their taught will or could bring about such changes, have been placed before them as stumbling stones from womb to tomb, to trip them up, right into the final box of their own making, the Coffin Box, which they themselves freely nail down by their own acquiescence to accept what social Role Models teach them.

As I’ve said, for failure to think outside such Boxes!

But in all honesty, I do tend to believe they are honestly trying to ferret out wisdom to alter their questionable reality, by communicating with other like-minded individuals, hopefully to garner solutions or just company in their misery. Even when they’ve been counseled by others using the Science of Right Reason, that such behavior is indicative of insanity. Meaning, that those for whom they turn to, if like-minded, is like an insane person, believing that if he continues to repeat the same course of action (like continuing to go to the same friend, neighbor, priest, preacher, attorney, representative, judge or whatever other Social Role model for advice) it somehow will have a different outcome! NOT!!! 

It just doesn’t work that way. You must learn to think for yourself. You must learn to study for yourself. You must become competent to handle your own affairs yourself. If after such due diligence, you decide to ferret out others of like-minded individuals, the cognizance of knowledge to discern the best course of action will be much clearer. Rather than accepting the advice of others carte blanch, without a solid foundation established upon the Science of Right Reason to accomplish the goals, which are the object of your own affairs!

For this reason, what we have consistently striven to accomplish herein, is to provide empirical evidence to determine if anyone can honorably and honestly prove our premises wrong. Anyone seeking their own sanity, would do the same as an example of reasonable due diligence!

In this way, it shows that while your’re seeking answers or solution to problems, your able to give feedback reasonably, to either confirm or deny the empirical counsel or evidence given by such social Role Models you may trust.

In this manner you avoid the pitfalls of taking what others say or do, which may cause you to repeat actions that have already have proven otherwise!

For those truly concerned with avoiding insanity or the signs thereof, we once again, proffer for your sanity, honor, and educational advancement towards freely chosen self-determination, the evidenced of those who have sacrificed for years to peel away programming of illusionist misrepresentation by social Role Models exposed, by offering the truth of the matter via the “4” declarations espoused by the S.E.A., published via the web links: http://seagov.info/index.html, available for those honestly looking for researching the truth, in the interest of Good Will with All Walks of Life seeking Universal Peace and solution oriented paradigms to the problems of local, national, and international systemic fraud via both Centers of Governance, Education, and Religion.

Too much blame, not enough introspection. Yes the destroyers are hurting education. But education has hurt itself by compromising intellectual freedom and diversity of opinion. How many decades has political correctness dominated education and academia. How often are politically incorrect opinions disaffirmed and non-establishment (read conservative, libertarian, religious, fathers, boys etc etc,)opinions disdained and silenced.

Once a monoculture was established, regardless of whether it was done in the name of “good”, it opened the doors to all who would turn the world of thought and education into a realm of money, power and influence. We have no one but ourselves to blame. The present day educational efficiency experts won the day a mono culture took over.

The only way out is to stand up for principle, cut the self-righteous political correctness, admit other views, respect others as you would expect them to respect you.

There are thousands like him, and they simply refuse to recognize that the money they are able to collect was actually only possible because of many investments that were made in the past.  Wealth accumulated through generations of hard work.  Lots of this prosperity is directly traceable to government grants that were not directed st some short term profit, rather they were directed at various applied research projects that became public domain.  Now these creeps want to kill the very mechanisms that made their miserable rise to wealth possible.  I know hundreds of these ingrates, and that is what they are.  Ingrates.

Mack: Engineers no-doubt designed and fabricated instruments of torture for the inquisitions of the dark ages.  We’re only as good as the ethics of the political system that is funding the work.  That’s why a broad liberal education of the general public is so important.  It’s also why we have to get a handle on corruption and the lack of respect for individual civil rights and privacy.  There’s some scary people using some scary technologies out there.  I was purely technical for decades, but started broadening my studies about 10 years ago.  Better late than never. 

Anarchisse: disdain for intellectuals and the arts is real, and all around us, and is not new.  Yes there is selectivity, but generally, subservience and submission is cultivated over creativity.  In education, it is a double edged sword.  Students must not question the fundamentals thst need learned, and achieving this without killing their inquisitiveness and creativity is part of art of a fine teacher.  But, when we speak of disdain for intellectuals in the general society…....read that book I mentioned and we can save a lot of time.  If you think there is not a widespread sub-culture out in small town Amerika that despises the so-called ‘intellectual class’, you are misinformed.  The Jacoby book I mentioned is merely a great compilation and overview of the beast.  IT is real, and dangerous, and would love to bring you Sara Palin or worse for President.  Seriously, read it, you’ll thank me.

I would have hoped that this article/opinion had been a little less dogmatic itself and shown more thought and research. The author makes unsupported statements that some research would have helped add validity to. Instead it reads like a preacher talking to the quire instead of an attempt to legitimately enlighten. So while I generally agree with the sentiment I think the effort was a missed opportunity.

Actually, in Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union (which I regard as fascistic) an effort was not made to suppress art, higher education and intellectuals, but to make sure they were of the right kind.  All of these regimes were quite willing to fund art and education strongly when they appeared to support the regime’s views and purposes (as were their monarchical and feudal predecessors).

Britt appears to be trying to rewrite history to taint his contemporary opponents with a bad name.  I think we should try to stick to the facts.

Education is being attacked by the GOP at both state and Federal levels by the GOP/Tea Bags!  Why does this seem a reality and why are they doing this?

FYI: Koch Brothers may only be the tip of the ice berg, there are many conservative organizations out there, many disguised as other then what they are.

For instance some of the conservative organizations are very secretive in nature. Take this one ALEC, I never heard of them before, but they are manipulating our lives and our government in many ways, for the illusions are real,..... which sounds silly when I think about it?...Check out the following link article;

The attack on teachers may be the disdain for Intellectuals of lower education? In Wisconson the GOP seems to be doing their attack at the upper level asking for academia emails an obvious practice at intimidation?

I find the GOP/Tea Bags seem to have a disdain for just about everything seemingly supportive of human right and liberty, so the GOP/Tea Bags seem to support much of what smacks of Fascism to me! Especially the Republican lock step attacks seen at the State Governemnt levels with the Fed GOP/Tea Bags cleaning doing backup! The Tea Bags keep talking about states right, I wonder why?

Again, we cast ourselves into the field of endeavor to preserve such for whomever wishes to put their two cents in, or whatever they deem concerns them!

No one herein, has any natural right to complain about any one’s two cents or otherwise, if it honestly reflects an individuals own positions. It truly is a ‘culture of ignorance’ to believe such imbecilic drivel, if one believes otherwise!

I believe it is written somewhere, that one’s two cents was worth more than all the gold in the empire, for it was given from the depths of all which one could offer, not from so greedy pilfering mentality of misguided deceitful nature or mean-spirited come up-pence to dissuade others, their natural right of giving or expression!

But, for what is worth, as they like to say “Life is to Short! They who pander humility (not unlike the Pharisees and Sadducee) on their sleeves as to say, look at me parading around because I humiliate myself for your benefit!

Rather, why miss any opportunity to put one in their place so to speak. When we’re capable of seeing through their misdirection foisted upon those who would give all for the greater whole, to benefit from their blessings of sharing, what some would deem as a paltry effort!!!

I think it’s relevant to the topic of Chris Hedges article “Why the United States Is Destroying Its Education System” to discuss the clowns who seem to drift in and out of the discussion seemingly trying to disrupt it.  They have an array of tactics, which I won’t waste time discussing, but I think the underlying psychologies and pathologies are quite germane to the topic. 

If one were to focus on the motivations of these people, it might prove illuminating as to why so many people unwittingly support the ‘culture of ignorance’ that is bringing this country down.  I believe their behavior stems from a need to suck up to perceived authority, or a need for group belonging, or perhaps a demonstration of loyalty to their group.  There seems to be a correlation with religiosity among the lesser intellectual minions.

Again, I am recommending ‘The Age of American Unreason’ by Susan Jacoby to any objective person who who wants to better understand the background of the dilema abount which Chris Hedges writes.

In conclusion, as I’ve been reading these postings, the not-so-clever political subterfuge becomes more obvious.  I appeal to well intentioned readers to list their thoughts as to why and perhaps how these ‘disruptors’ improve their self esteem by dropping their ideological turds here.  It should at least be made clear to these numb-skulls that by not being honest about seriously re-designing our education system, they are doing their country no service.  And in so re-designing, I will say we should not throw out the baby with the bathwater, so I hope the discussion continues full force, in spite of the lunatic fringe.

I support any teacher baselined by a simple pay for performance reward structure. 
Bottom-line, teachers are only as good as the results.  Tenure is education should
be as relevant as tenure in any other job.  Show results and rise with the system
versus lag behind the average and risk getting cut off as the “bottom 10%”.  Novel
thought there - culling off the worst teachers over time while rewarding the best
of the best.  And before it is mentioned, at this day and age we should easily be
able to assess what qualifies as a legitimate (and non-political) “best of the best”
type of metric.

Any problem with education must first be determined by looking squarely to the means to justify the ends!

And who “controls” or “owns” the means and ends to produce the purposes intended.

Now, if any of the columnist or posters herein, can show me differently than I’ve proffered via voluminous comments exposing the lack of Standing by anyone herein to alter the course of political reality peacefully, or how anyone can bring about Standing to alter the causality for the lack thereof, them I will humbly accept to participate vigorously in support thereof. Both via pledge by Life, Wealth, and Sacred Honor!

If no one can do so, then why parade with all this verbiage lacking any real solution orient construct?     

As I’ve said in the beginning hereinabove, he, she, them, they, or whichever, in any combination thereof, can prove “control” or “ownership,” the simple solution is qui tam litigation to restore one’s property Rights or any reasonable replevin action peacefully sought to restore one’s property or the rights inherent therein, or thereto.   

In the minds of many, education is a privilege offered by a Social Compact (State/Nation), not a Natural Right antecedent to the organization thereto. But a closer look at both Standings (Natural/Privilege) related thereto, proves both acquire legitimacy from different points of Natural Law or Contractual legalese provided by any Social Compact for such stated purposes.

1st.) One point states that its position is viewed lawfully from their standpoint via Natural Law.

Which states that Mankind as a whole, even in its singular instance, owes to each one another, a duty to instruct the uneducated wherever the setting maybe offered or where the opportunities may arise. But holds all Mankind to the duty to provide such settings and opportunities to secure unto themselves such necessary safeguards as they deem necessary to provide tranquility and security not only for themselves but for All Walks of Life equally! 

2nd.) While others approach education by those who see the advancement of education as a “tool” (of “control” and “ownership”) to be applied strictly as a social privilege.

In this premise, each is left to his own devises seek self-improvement or educational advancement to become gainfully employed or greater livelihood from their own efforts via their own enterprise and expense. This approach may penalize both offspring and society as a whole for any fore-bearer failing to prepare for such opportunities to any offspring, to either advance for employment purposes or greater livelihood! CRIME!

We hold to the 1st position! Solely as to leave nothing to chance to help each individual have the choice to prepare their minds for either employment of greater livelihood. This is the Natural Order. Not likely to produce aberrations of ill behavior, capable of passing or producing unnatural consequences beyond ones control or struggles that may be produced for each of us unnaturally speaking, from the Standpoint of Natural Law, while recognizing each to their natural gifts and choices by providing access holistically too All Walks of Life, the ability to decide for themselves, the level of educational benefit to fit whatever drives them, as naturally inclined!

What this particular post has to do with Chirs Hedges article and the discussion on education is questionable so I apologize in advance. 

Prosefights…...your post seems to imply electric vehicles are a pipe dream, or that there are some serious and/or insurmountable problems with a future that is more based on centrally generated electricity???  your post asks a couple of troubling questions then references an series of tacked together references (which I found interesting), but which make the ‘average’ non-technical reader think what????  or WTF???  It’s a weird post to be sure. 

Anyhow, to help you, for a simple task like determining whether a PV panel is producing a given amount of energy, why not use one of the Microchip parts?  I just finished a project with the 18F452, and a low power 24 bit ADC.  It would beat the crap out of what the article suggests: an 8051 based architecture.  What an old POC (Piece of Crap). It wastes far more power than necessary.  The MAXIM alternative might be OK, I don’t know, but Forth?  Geez, Forth is about as old as Fortran I think, and is it any more capable?  Wow, why not use C, or some programming language that’s a little more current?  It makes me wonder just how credible some of the other stuff in at collection of ‘recources’ is.  It’s so darn out-of-context and unorganized, it’s sure to waste a lot of time to go through.  For such an important topic, shouldn’t the reader be treated with a little more consideration?  Anyway, Digikey just sent out catalog TZM112.US, which is full of much lower power, high performance integrated microcontrollers to do that job.  If anyone is serious about tackling the challenges with EV’s, and other future oriented projects, they should be current, and I do not even consider myself adequately current.

In any case, if you’re post is to make some impression about something, please state clearly what it is.  As it is, it’s noise.

I went to school to be a teacher and taught about 20+ years in total. I lived below the poverty level every one of those years.  I would never go into teaching again. My last job I got too sick to work. Right before I quit, I found out my school was in a Superfund site.

This, by the way, is a problem that may actually be growing. With major corporations controlling the government, it is to the government that major polluters are unloading properties they can’t sell and no longer want.  The Superfund I worked in had been the site of an oil refinery for 70 years and then simple scrapped away and then later it was sold to the government. They built a school, a big stand alone Head Start Center, and a Post Office on this property. In the background stands a working oil pipe line tank farm.

I know this is slightly off topic, but I want people to realize to what extent that the schools are being controlled by monsters.  In my town, we also have a brand new gorgeous YMCA also built in a Superfund site.  Do people know about this…not really. It is considered acceptable… Change some laws, deregulate this and that, blah blah blah, sell nasty properties to the government.

Since I was sickened to the point I thought I was going to die I have obsessively tracked down what is going on regarding this practice.  They used pseudo science to justify it. It goes something like this. The carcenogens are declared at levels low enough for humans to tolerate. They test trout in dirt (and water of course) from these sites and if they don’t develop tumors in 48 hours, they have their “pass test”. Yep, this is the official test.

The problem, of course, is that chronic exposure to chemicals and heavy metals build over time and “reservoirs” in the body and slowly sickens the individual. Their test and excuse is a lie.  They get away with it because it takes a few years for people to get sick and their sicknesses are varied. Depending on the health and the age of the employee, they can tolerate it different lengths of time, etc.

With health care controlled and the seriously ill disenfranchised from health care, clusters go obscured.  It perpetuates teacher and employee turnover also, and they like that too. For the sociopaths running our government, it’s a win win.

This is not something that people will easily be able to find out about.  NO one is writing articles about it and not too many people know about it.  There’s not much to see to figure it out and proving it would require lawsuits.  But the fact that is traceable is finding out where designated Superfund sites are in your town and watching what is going on with them.

Let us put the record straight for those bent on assuming presumptions, with-out-first asking, whatever it is they seem to want to believe about pander or bait others to believe, concerning OU and/or presumed by many to be AAA! BUT NOT SO!

We are not Cretins (excuse me, I mean Christians) or members of any captain “Kirk” (excuse me, I mean to say what others may incorrectly refer to as “Church”) authority or any semblance thereof!

Nor, have we ever deemed the Doctrine of Discovery (1453-4 A.D.) justified (google it you don’t have any idea what we’re inferring), which has been the bane of so many billions (not unlike Mohammedan Islamic BS or any other religious mediocrity designed to enslave either via educational Role Models or the Sword). Which has murdered under such presumed name or title of some unknown or claimed known form of misguided deity by the treacherous authority thereunder, claiming some divine BS to have a right to dictate to the rest of humanity, some idea of what is holier than thou, absent variation by agreement with All Walks of Life, when faced with justifiable necessity, to mount a Stand or suffer oblivion! Such as any case, for which, any authority jointly recognized necessary, to put all authority within the hands of One deemed prudent enough and savvy enough to preserve both the viability and principles espoused herein above, for the sole purpose of survival of the species from some so-called natural phenomena, which requires such agreements! Not otherwise! 

Nor have we ever claimed to support any idea of divinity other than to recognize the idea of Intelligent Design (Supreme Creator). Only due to the fact, lacking any Science of Right Reason to currently to continue justly the expressed principles, for which we know any social order must be founded upon, e.g. “We hold these principles to be self-evident, that All Walks of Life are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, Property, and the pursuit of happiness, not in contradistinction to those Rights exercised by All Walks of Life. LeFeller, Mack makes a good point there that I almost missed: Municipal Bonds.  The very same people who want to destroy the classroom aspects of education are perfectly willing to spread the fiscal responsibility for building those shiny new buildings and sports facilities.  The developers take their money up-front then have to renovate the next district.  And the local ‘big fish in a small pond’ buy the muni-bonds to create security for their wealth by distributing the burden over ‘regular people’, who, if they can’t pay their school tax to keep bond payments current, will indeed be thrown from their homes or imprisoned. 

This mechanism is one of the reasons America is such a good investment.  Because our system ensures above all that the stupid and the honest will get treated like cattle.  Again, the problem, as it has been said here: corruption.  It couldn’t happen without corrupt local officials.  Again I quote Otter, from Animal House, “You fucked up… you trusted us! Hey, make the best of it!”  Politicians should have passed a law long ago that makes issuance of municipal debt by bond contingent on public referendum.  But there’s that damn double edged sword….....the public might just be too damn stupid to see what the right course of action is.  That requires an attention span and the ability to read and comprehend.  Fully half of us are too stupid and lazy to do the hard work that’s required to run our government.  We think it’s enough to go out and vote once a year.  (I’m ranting again aren’t I?) Well might as well go for it: the shiny new schools are a counterproductive distraction to say the least, as are the sports and extra-curricular activities.  The ‘factory school’ is an unimportant distraction for laymen from legitimate pedagogical issues. 

We’ve built a self-oriented ‘superstar’, ‘I’m special, you’re special’ society, and we reinforce that notion at every turn.  THAT is why good teachers can’t do their jobs.  If I hear, just one more time, “You’re special the way God made you”, I’m going to puke.  The fact is nobodies special, we’re all replaceable, and sports USED to teach you that.  Now, it’s all about striving to be the superstar, and to hell with everybody else.  We give lip service to teamwork, but really, we do not value our own overall society.  Too many of us think we’re some kind of outlaw-cowboy, well, if these folks weren’t so ignorant-arrogant, they could see they wouldn’t be diddly squat without the educated previous generation who made their decent lifestyle and standard of living possible.  One one hand, these cowboys say: ‘to hell with everybody, it’s every man for himself’, but by their words, they claim to be doing it for future generations of special Americans.  It’s a load of bullshit, just a smokescreen for corruption at the public’s expense. 

But it does piss me off, because no matter how bad these idiots screw things up, at least the next generation has a fighting chance IF they have a good education.  Looks like in the future that’s going to be something reserved for the upper class.  Thanks Dumb-ass cowboys, and your ever-pregnant women for ruining the equal opportunity of America…...as if you ever really understood it.

Your post hits home, my local political experiences described in your post really hit home for me. I have seen the same thing.  Crony Island in not just on the east coast!

I can not even guess what local politics would be like in someplace like Mississippi!

In my small community not only does nepotism seem real, I would suggest their is a bit of inbreeding that would explain the larger quantity of Republicans!

There’s a good book on this that’s quite different from most of the BS out there, and it goes to some root causes for the student motivation side of the equation: ‘The Age of American Unreason’, by Susan Jacoby. 

I’ll coin a term, the ‘cult of ignorance worship’, and the book goes to understanding some of the important roots of the problem.  It’s complex, as you know, and there are deep cultural forces and insecurities at work here.  Some of these insecurities are the fault of so-called ‘liberals’, intellectual snobbishness, and things of that nature, and I am as guilty as anybody for putting down those who support “worshiping stupidity”, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to molly-coddle people as they do their children. 

Look around: we are getting our asses kicked by better educated societies, and if people want to live in denial of that, fine, just shut up and stay out of the way. 

Jacoby doesn’t go here, but I’ll say a huge part of the problem is we don’t have honest (non-partisan) political brokers.  The parents who raise self-oriented kids need a harsh reality check, and the teachers who just go along with the ‘easy way’ also need a kick in the rump.  NO damn politician will commit political suicide by offending both groups. 

And then you have the idiots who say we should abandon DOE and turn things over to local control.  Good Christ, look at the countries who are kicking our asses.  Are they turning things over to the local yokals??  Here is an area where we must surrender our childish fears of strong central authority and give serious comtrol to a department like DOE, which will require continual scrubbing, like any department, to remove the corrupt.  School superintendents should report directly to the DOE in Washington, NOT a local school board who’s ‘local control’ is corrupted by the votes of dumb-asses.

Someday I’ll tell you what I really think about it.  Thanks for the opportunity to vent.  I did get on a bit of a rant there…....no shortage of vigor here my man.

Actually, I think factory schools are currently out of fashion; the dominant model is the office.  Schools represent the societies they are embedded in.  As the U.S. declines into a Third-World standard of living, the factory may come back.

The DOE is a symptom, not a cause.

I can tell you exactly why localities should not be allowed to run their schools as they see fit: THEY ARE UTTERLY INCOMPETENT.  They support nepotism in a huge way.  They place undue emphasis on favored extracurricular activities.  They are often personally undereducated, and/or unappreciative of what constitutes an adequate education in the world in which their students are going to have to survive.  They are incapable of separating a good teacher or administrator from a bad one, and this is related to the various tentacles of nepotism.  Some of them are there to facilitate the winning of contracts by their various contractor friends. 

I could go on, but when these practices are ‘local’ they are more difficult to detect and correct.  We need a much, much stronger DOE, one that is not afraid to tell the parents their responsibilities, run serious re-certification programs for teachers, and to throw out stupidity like ‘intelligent design’.

Having served on a school board, and having met with school board members from all over Pennsylvania, I can say: the locals responsibility should be limited strictly to running the sports teams and other extracurricular activities, and figuring out how to privately fund those activities in such a way that they in now way impact the core curriculum.

Some people think it’s perfectly acceptable for someone to serve on a school board who’s only education is high school.  They make me sick, because they’re destroying our country with their ignorance.  You want to go toward the lowest common denominator, or do you want a good economy and a strong country?

ITWs comment has merit, but no reality in the world of politics.  For many politicians show a despicable practice which portrays an abundant absence of shame, ....especially now with the GOP!
Every time I see a Republican standing in front of a microphone,...... I need to grab my nonpartisan barf bag!

All we need to do to lower the deficit is pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan.  Done.

All we have to do to fix the Health care systems is say: As of July 1, 2014, every American will be covered by Medicare.  Done.

All we have to do to fix the revenue problem is say: All tax breaks are gone.  Capital gains is income.  Everyone (including corporations) pays 15% of their income as income tax.  Done.

But there’s no courage or honesty to do it.

I for one am deathly tired of hearing the deficit being used as a vehicle for driving the middle class off the cliff.
It’s such a stupid one-sided canard for anybody who knows anything about the economy.
It’s not that entitlements suddenly broke the bank stopping the wheels of industry, but that Wall Street malfeasance caused a deficit in capital - a credit crunch that threatened to bring the capitalist system to a grinding halt.
The public deficit increased as a result of government bailing out its corrupt bosses, not to mention the stupid immoral wars.
It all sounds righteous to drone on about paying our debts and being fiscally responsible, but that focuses on only one part of the problem to divert attention from the real cause ( a classic right wing tactic).
There IS a revenue problem , not just a spending problem - it’s basic accounting -
Net Profit = revenue - expenses.
The salivating greedy oligarchists want to take revenue out of the equation, and stupidly Oblahma has not pushed back. Of course, the right doesn’t see it as a revenue problem, since they would be perfectly happy to cut all social services. But that has nothing to do with the recession - just their greedy self-centered view of government.

AMERICAN LEARNING ASSESSMENT METHODS

Mack: Now doesn’t that tell you all you need to know about Montezuma

Yes, this is what I remember of exams in both high-school and university, particularly the latter. True/False, Multiple Choice. Wham! Bam! The teacher grades the right and wrong scores without any personal incite or judgment. The scores say everything. (Which is a bug not a feature of such testing methods.)

No description whatsoever is given of what the kid has learned and how s/he does or does not adequately/rationally express themselves or apply their learning. Maybe, here and there, a teacher will make some poignant remark - but that is hit or miss.

FRENCH LEARNING ASSESSMENT METHODS

The French version is long a handwriting. Yes, you are given a question and you are expected to write a thousand words on the subject. One course, one or two questions. One hour to respond.

And, yes, French teachers have a LOT of reading to do in order to assess the student’s ability and to ascribe a note.

ANECDOTAL

I once gave courses in International Business out of a book written by an American. The book came with Teaching Aids that included T/F-M/C questions for each chapter.

The French students went berserk. They complained to the school’s head that I was giving “unfair exams”. Yes, I kid you not.

MY POINT

Yes, so what? Regardless of the scoring mechanism or the manner in which exams are concocted, the OECD PISA* results are roughly similar between the two educational systems, French and American.

The French system is nationally hierarchical - all teachers work for the French government - not local towns or regions or states. Just the opposite from the US. (Yes, there are private schools and yes they are costly.)

The two systems could not be more different, but the results are about the same - and they are woefully under-average.

Like it or not, the wrote-learning educational systems in the Far East are the ones that demonstrate the highest scores. In Europe it is Finland that is the best and in North America it is Canada that is far, far better than the US.

As I posted earlier in this forum, the ability to gather and process information, apply cogent reasoning and arrive at a conclusion is the heart of any learning system.

And I don’t think any assessment method (where SAT or otherwise) adequately measures that ability. If one looks at how PISA did it, one realizes that the assessment method is really quite complex.

*PISA = Program for International Student Assessment, run by the OECD in Paris.

I no longer teach in the public schools…great salary, but too many ethics issues with administration, the district, and the parents.  The kids are always great.  I have 25 years in teaching, am very creative, but too invested in the truth to teach in those places anymore. I feel sorry for the kids…it finally got to me. I prefer Homeschools, private schools (if there is freedom to create curriculum from truth), magnet schools…if no politics involved. There are a few of us…but many others stay on, collecting their pay, valiantly sticking with the books wer are given, the curriculum and the silly grading system.  It’s all fraud…
So, now I’m heading overseas to teach ESL…could be worse over there or better…we’ll see.

What a bunch of intellectual hot air is this article as well as these comments being presented here… It’s not the government destroying the educational system in this country. It is society who does not care about our future… Oh yeah there are long lines streaming at the local PTA meetings in our individual communities school districts. Many literate people are outside our schools or government offices demanding a fair education for our society. No I do not see that happening.. Just a bunch of quotes, well read, well versed opinioniated slogans showing how intelligent we are. Parents must prioritize the importances of education for their own offsprings and force society to stop thinking it is a burden to provide a quality education for its citizens. If this country was so concern about being the best in the education game then providing a quality education would be free to all… But as usual it’s another bottom line agenda in this country. It’s the improvished area whose schools are falling by the waste side. And even in the improvished area these youngters who manage to excel are still graduating with an inadequate representation of a quality education. If you are really going to bring some constructive opinions to the table let’s start there ... Stop buying the video games , xboxes and all these other excuses for not paying attention to your children or extended members of ones family.It is societies responsiblity to make sure a good education starts in the home and then extends environmentally.  But of course the elitist society who believe in the survival of the fittest which are in control of the money and functionality of our educational institutes are more worried about how many cupcakes to bring to the bazaar or some other insigficant gather of the mindless then the future education of all people within this country.

Many of the USA ills are directly related to illiteracy. Just a few statistics:
•Literacy is learned. Illiteracy is passed along by parents who cannot read or write.

•One child in four grows up not knowing how to read.

•43% of adults at Level 1 literacy skills live in poverty compared to only 4% of those at Level 5

•3 out of 4 food stamp recipients perform in the lowest 2 literacy levels

•90% of welfare recipients are high school dropouts

•16 to 19 year old girls at the poverty level and below, with below average skills, are 6 times more likely to have out-of-wedlock children than their reading counterparts.

•Low literary costs $73 million per year in terms of direct health care costs. A recent study by Pfizer put the cost much higher.

This is even with the Education funding the US currently allows and stupid (literally) Repugs want to defund.

Mack, you’re right about some of the nut cases here.  I’ve way too much time on my hands and read some of the ‘manifesto’ of this Orbus Unum charachter (Authur Alexander Augustus??) It’s rich.
HE starts: “.....All Walks of Life owe to one another via their just stewardship of the self-evident principles each are equally endowed as unalienable rights and entitlements, to which the Law’s of Nature and Nature’s Creator have entitled them.”  Unoriginal, nice sounding, but impossible to substantiate, so who’s to argue?  Sounds good, like the Declaration of Independence, which is only as good as the people charged with implementing it.  The guys a nutter.

Anyway, don’t take this personally, but you said something that stuck a chord with me: “Students with high IQs and high test score were separated from the rabble and provided with the very best re-enforcement.  It was as if that’s all the schools knew how to educate, the very bright.  Or, they didn’t want to waste their efforts on the rest of ‘also present’ mooks….....”

So I ask tongue-in-cheek….a lot more education does happen if the kids have the right attitude about it.  You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it think.  I call a spade a spade when it comes to incompetent teachers, but I go right to their defense when it comes to parents who don’t lay down the law with their kids.  The law when I was in school:  Get in any trouble whatsoever with the teacher, and you’re in for twice as much at home.  That included ‘working below your potential’.  Sorry you weren’t properly motivated, but the return on the public education dollar is a hell of a lot greater when invested in students that do give a damn about what they’re there for, and understand that it is a privilege, not a right, to have a paid education.

This is exactly 50% of the education problem today….parents raise their special little brats to think the world revolves around them, and that it’s OK for them to waste everybody’s time.  Goddamn kids want a good job and general social security, they have to pull their miserable weight.

And don’t answer when the child asks, ‘Why do the cats keep getting fatter?’ Just turn on the TV, stick an ipod in their ear, and a video game in their face. You’ve done your job.

The victums are not people who bought houses they could not afford so as to participate in the housing feeding frenzy where one could get rich of a house, fuel consumerism, and personal debt. They choose to do this capitalist system behavior from greed, not responsible behavior toward the american dream of legitimately buying a house.  They live in them for free for two years before foreclosure while the houses are being distroyed.  Many of those who bought early, used their house values to borrow for consumption.  These were capitalist pig irresponsibe behaviors and these were not the real victums.  The victums were the ones who did not participate in this fiasco and remain without a house, or can try buy a still overpriced house, that is trashed, and requires much money and repairs to restore.  People cannot accept their complicency in this housing fiasco where most were gloating over their appreciation, taking debt on thier house, and supporting this capitalist consumer fiasco by participating in it.  All of middleclass society and lower are victums of this middle class participation in greed following the capitalist parasitic and predatory behavior. The victums are those without a fair and social society where responsibility, morality, and fairness reign.People should buy houses when they have an adequate job and finances provided by a decent social society instead of the elitiest capitalist one we are victums of.  The victums are the responsible ones who don’t have a house even though more financially stable than these homebuyers.  People who want to buy a house at its real, not bubble value, and that they can afford.  Supporting people who support a captialist feeding frenzy makes victums off all who want a decent and fair society.  Hedge and Scheer support the people who are greedy, immoral, unthinking, irresponsible because they think people are weak, ignorant, and pawns of elitist including such bright elitists as Hedge and Sheer.  If we are to have a social society we neeed to support maturity and have faith in people, not continue to make them like children.  You can’t have the good society if you reinforce bad behavior.  You can’t have socialism without maturity and responsibility.  Hedge and Scheer keep shooting themselves and socialism in the foot by this blaming everything on the capitalsist as though people were just stupid little victums instead of predatory and parasitic immature participants in the capitalist system.

Since this crowd of purveyors continue their of none inessential incessant blathering of insanity, I’ll slather their doped mindset with only oratorio found on the wilder-side! For the Wilder side is what they freely have chosen as their only want and desire! Even when they appear to do otherwise, their beguiling nature proves differently consistently. So we are free to at accordingly, to keep their State of enter-tainment in a Circus filled while all around them the republic crumbles, to wit:

A procession of noble boys, fantastically dressed as toreadors, came out to meet her, and the young Count of Tierra-Nueva, a wonderfully handsome lad of about fourteen years of age, uncovering his head with all the grace of a born hidalgo and grandee of Spain, led her solemnly in to a little gilt and ivory chair that was placed on a raised dais above the arena.
The children grouped themselves all round, fluttering their big fans and whispering to each other, and Don Pedro and the Grand Inquisitor stood laughing at the entrance. Even the Duchess—the Camerera-Mayor as she was called—a thin, hard-featured woman with a yellow ruff, did not look quite so bad-tempered as usual, and something like a chill smile flitted across her wrinkled face and twitched her thin bloodless lips.

It certainly was a marvelous bull-fight, and much nicer, the Infanta thought, than the real bull-fight that she had been brought to see at Seville, on the occasion of the visit of the Duke of Parma to her father. Some of the boys pranced about on richly-caparisoned hobby-horses brandishing long javelins with gay streamers of bright ribands attached to them; others went on foot waving their scarlet cloaks before the bull, and vaulting lightly over the barrier when he charged them; and as for the bull himself, he was just like a live bull, though he was only made of wicker-work and stretched hide, and sometimes insisted on running round the arena on his hind legs, which no live bull ever dreams of doing.

He made a splendid fight of it too, and the children got so excited that they stood up upon the benches, and waved their lace handkerchiefs and cried out: Bravo toro! Bravo toro! just as sensibly as if they had been grown-up people. At last, however, after a prolonged combat, during which several of the hobby-horses were gored through and through, and, their riders dismounted, the young Count of Tierra-Nueva brought the bull to his knees, and having obtained permission from the Infanta to give the coup de grace, he plunged his wooden sword into the neck of the animal with such violence that the head came right off, and disclosed the laughing face of little Monsieur de Lorraine, the son of the French Ambassador at Madrid.

The arena was then cleared amidst much applause, and the dead hobby-horses dragged solemnly away by two Moorish pages in yellow and black liveries, and after a short interlude, during which a French posture-master performed upon the tightrope, some Italian puppets appeared in the semi-classical tragedy of Sophonisba on the stage of a small theatre that had been built up for the purpose. They acted so well, and their gestures were so extremely natural, that at the close of the play the eyes of the Infanta were quite dim with tears. Indeed some of the children really cried, and had to be comforted with sweetmeats, and the Grand Inquisitor himself was so affected that he could not help saying to Don Pedro that it seemed to him intolerable that things made simply out of wood and coloured wax, and worked mechanically by wires, should be so unhappy and meet with such terrible misfortunes.—The Birthday of the Infanta.

Blaming the victim of a crime seems a most common political trick, and even more so a Republican one!

The same people who leveraged the housing market may be the same ones jacking up the prices of oil, it appears to be the same technique anyway!  This may be one of the few things, I agree with Hedges on, .....Capitalism seems nothing more than opportunism and without regulations enables a free rape and pillaging against a society.  Foxes in the hen house is what it seems!

Hedges battle against corporatocracy is good, but he cannot understand or think clearly due to his bias and hatred toward capitalism.  These folks or homeowners were people who bought houses in a bubble they could not afford because they went along with the capitalism system without thinking or thinking with greed.  When he supports these people he supports the capitalists.  He punishes the responsible thoughtful people who did not buy in the bubbed and were are are kept out of overpriced houses and are being taxed to keep these capitalist pigs house buyers in a house and themselves out. Social and political fairness and morality require a control of hatred so it does not distort ones reason as is evident in Hedges case.

It has become desirable to be obedient rather than competant in both the Education system and in the working world.

Those who truly SEE are a threat to this system and there is a creation of despotism to protect it.

That’s why getting a degree is more about being a member of the CLUB and becoming in debt than about real learning.

No! What is needed, is for people to wake up out of their State of enter-tainment, as if such condition was ever humorous behavior or indicative of justifiable speculation as to witness such spectator-ship evincing the demise of a once wise society centered on due diligence for the Greater Good Will of exercising just stewardship of the Statecraft handed them by their ancestors of honorable happy memory!!!

I know, I know, there are those who deem themselves capable of instructing or teaching me otherwise, by their oratory and/or presumed intelligentsia! NOT!!!
But, lest I be condemned with the pathetic fleas that lie (in wait for the crumbs perchance caste from the mouths of their Masters) for the Dogs of War, let not those claims spotted thereby, related to any claims of unfounded slander, escape unscathed. For there is not one capable of denying any empirical evidence, truth, or premises for which we have laid bare, for their possible edification.

Solely put forth to exhort them to greater possibilities to avoid their own total subjugation and that of their presumed off-spring, while time is of the essence to do otherwise! 

For whether such insignificant fleas wish to apprise themselves of their tenuous circumstances or not, they cannot ever change the facts they so freely choose to ignore!

Just to get the literacy question out of the way, as the mistakes being
made by some truthdippers are clouding the issue.

If all the critics of the literacy of Americans are not too lazy to check
it out, UNESCO published the literacy rate of all the countries of the
world (data collected in 2007 – See Table H, page 171 of the “HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2009, Overcoming barriers: Human mobility
and development.”  It takes a huge amount of investigation to get
these statistics and while this data is three years previous, it is
relevant to today.).  The United States is ranked 13th among 182
nations at a human development index value at 95.6%.  Norway is
ranked 1st and is 6.2% higher but they spend $7,841 more per capita
than Norway.  Norway $53,433 a year vs. the US $45,592.  So the
difference there is most likely a matter of bucks invested per student. 
Both Norway and the U.S. literacy rate is calculated at 99%.

While 99% is impressive, more telling is that the U.S. is ranked 22th in
the world where 20% of Americans based on the percentage aged 16-
65 (data collected 1994-2003) lack “functional literacy skills” compared
with Norway at 7.9%.  Norway’s long-term unemployment was at .2%
and the U.S. at 17.3%. 

This report is very telling and worth the reading if empirical data is
wanted instead of bloated personal opinions. 

More recently, in a USA Today article, January 8, 2009, 1 in 7 U.S.
adults are reported to have low literacy skills, or 32 million adults. 
This is corroborated by Education Centers report, dated November 8,
2010 but has the US as now 21st in the world, so there was a little bit
of gain in 7 years.  “According to statistics, the literacy rate of the US
did not decline as forecasted by many educators a few years ago
due
to the lack of interest in education American youths have been showing. 
In fact, some reports have claim that the literacy rate has increased.” 
Still all in all not as shabby as some would have us believe.

about this very thing, test scores, etc., corrupting
education… so Hedges’ article expands the critique
for me. To my mind, the decline and confusion are
symptoms, though, not the root of the dis-ease…

Do your research from Ronald Reagan (Prop 13 the ‘tax reform’ measure that destroyed California’s world renowned public education system and bled the state treasury dry, the beginning of the era of deregulation, the Saving’s and Loan debacle, Enron, etc ) to the present and you will see a remarkable pattern. During those three decades two things happened in tandem: the educational level and literacy rate in California and across the nation plunged to dismal and shameful levels at the same time wealth rushed to the top leaving us with what? I near illiterate and easily manipulable electorate that can’t reason or follow an original idea farther than a civic center pigeon can fly and an inequality of wealth more lopsided than the Gilded Age or Old Europe. This is exactly the opposite of the American Dream. It is the Great Undoing of the American Dream. If there is an axiom here I submit it is this: the stupider you can keep most of The People the richer will be the few. So, again, the right Reverend Jeremiah Wright got it right and ‘said it plain’: The oligarchy of 1% know that if they want to keep the power they “gotta keep The People ignorant.”

  It is that your unctions are not irritable enough.  A bit of holy oil goes a long way.  Nobody wants to take a bath in it.
  Your “contractual nexus” does no more than perplex us.
  I’m shocked that my candor strikes you as unfounded slander. Take another gander at the way your comments meander.
  As to your remark regarding law and ordure—good gracious, how audacious!
  This time you are going to have to excuse me—and share at least half the blame.  Meantime I honorably (or otherwise) await any actual and proveable evidence that you do have a sense of humor hidden away somewhere in that five or six cubic inches of “gray matter” between your ears.
  PS—It’s called gray matter for a reason.  Means nothing is black or white; everything is a shade of gray, more or less.  That’s both the beauty and the hazard of being born, you know.  Nothing is for sure.

Let me suggest that if Harpo is actually there with you, that you turn the key pad over to him, I would much prefer reading a few well written honks, to your egregious homophonic irregularities.

If by the off chance you are attempting to be humorous, let me remind you that this is certainly not the forum for folderol and levity. I like most here have the goal of having our absurdities taken seriously, and expect that those absurdities will be treated with at least a modicum of respect.

Of the Marx brothers Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Zeppo, Clem, Curly, Moe etc., Karl was the most logical and serious minded. Some believe his prognostication of a future Dictatorship of the Proletariat was laughable, but there is no record of Karl ever cracking a smile, or engaging in levity whatsoever, and it is to be assumed that he offered his prognostication with a straight face, without a hint of levity.

If this forum were the place for levity, which it most certainly is not, then I would be open to frivolous folderol, but that is not the case, and I am most certainly not accepting of any outrageous break with decorum.

Occasionally quotations from those who are of a comedic bent serve to be enlightening and complementary to a serious dialectic. For example, Chico Marx’s often referenced question, “Via duck, via not a chicken?” is profound in its abstract inquisitiveness; and it points out the difficulty of communicating affectively without having semantics confuse rational discourse.

Please excuse the unasked for criticism, (it is my intent to be helpful,) and I hope I haven’t been too presumptuous in offering such.

This Old Savage is already on-record here suggesting that “Tao-ism,” as such, is semantically a CONtradiction-in-terms.  “Tao” (pronounced ‘Dow’) is simply how they say “Way” in Chinese.  In Japanese it’s “Do”....as in aiki-do or ju-do.  This Old Man, meantime, isn’t any kind of “-ist” at-all.

Yet H.O.O.E.E. Truedigger:  Where did you get this idea?  I’d really be interested to know the basis for it:  ...“most of us don’t want our kids to be intellectually independent. It makes for a lonely, tortured life haunted by a feeling of not belonging.”

Others have expressed the same feeling, but my experience has been quite the opposite.  Very little loneliness and no torture or haunted feelings of “not belonging.”

So, I am hard put to determine whether this claimed Taoist Walker, is either solely interested in the spiritual Chinese Folk Religion ideologies of Taoism or Confucianism, which as I’ve said, concerns itself with the social and moral side of life. If Confucius were around today (who sought to persuade in his own time, the magistrates to live by a code of honor, not unlike our efforts presently, for which he failed miserably), I’m pretty sure he would help guide this Taoist Walker to better happy hunting grounds! Rather than attempt to shew forth such imbecilic idiotic babbling against the Universal Mind’s Eye dedicated to Peace!

And, who would or could imagine what life would be like, without those seeking further perfection, for their presumed perfect conditions of slavery, when empirical evidence can be mustered to prove oblivion has its rewards only in their blissful ignorance?

Orbis Unum: I was bored one day and decided to alleviate my boredom by travelling ,so I bought a ticket from Inter-Galactical Space Lines. After all the price was reasonable ,and the destination exotic ,which I found enticing in both regards ,so I went to the Spaceport and passed security which was rather lengthy ,to say the least,as the security was run by an agency going by the name of’ ’ Ben will Queada take care of you ‘,a rather strange name but nevertheless very efficient .Once Space borne I settled in my seat for the most picturesque flight imaginable WOW ,but then I got bored after all the Aragorn system was not that different from the Zorro system and then the vessel passed through the Pierre system ,which I found bizarre .So I asked the Stewardess ,why is this system named Pierre ?,well because of a famous Russian author by the name of Tolstoy and Pierre was a character that was filthy rich ,but rather lost mentally speaking .How interesting I replied, rich yet lost ,not quite she replied ,he became a free-mason ,what the hell is that I asked along with a questioning glance .Its a kind of secret club she replied ,oh ! I muttered ,is that the same kind of people that wrecked our planet way back when, yup, nice meeting you I gotto go .Thanks I replied, there’s one more think ,do you have any old books that I could read, sure just ask, the robot, there is quite a selection .So I started reading the book which was very captivating in itself, however the terminology became exceedingly demanding, because of the multiple meanings that the words in essence attenuated, it became a conflict of meanings. So I decided to write them down as I read along and asked the robot for a dictionary that would complement the corresponding epoch.

Is basically how I felt upon completion of ‘half of the book’ .The capitain Rico advised all passengers to fasten their restraining devices as we were soon to approach the Ouroboros System ,which is very unstable and that all monitors be shut off for safety reasons, as there was a danger that the ‘,SELF’ societies that inhabited the system will try to ensnare the unwary ,looking out the portal I clearly understood the precautionary measures meaning and ordered a natural Green Tea .

These troubles in education,
are so insanely impossibly caught up in a panoply of apocalyptic spiritual declines across the world. A crowded world. This summer we hit 7 billion! How many will that be next summer? We’ll see how much attention education gets in the midst of a drying third world. Ever heard of the age of Kali Yuga? The age of mankind when “7 year olds become pregnant”? Our troubles will continue to multiply, this cannot be refuted. What happens to ANY group of living creatures, living out of balance? (besides cancer of course, cancer loves living out of balance.)
