What Stanley McChrystal Did to Pat Tillman’s FamilyPosted on Apr 13, 2011
By Narda Zacchino Editor’s note: Listen to the author discuss this story on the Truthdig Radio show. What is the matter with Barack Obama? Rather than leave the retired and disgraced Gen. Stanley McChrystal in the dustbin of military history after an indiscreet magazine interview, the president has resurrected him to oversee the administration’s new initiative to help military families. What a slap in the face to the nation’s highest-profile military family—that of Army Ranger Pat Tillman—on whom McChrystal heaped misery and disrespect by assisting in the fabrication of the circumstances surrounding Tillman’s death. On Tuesday, after the president announced the Joining Forces initiative, led by first lady Michelle Obama and the vice president’s wife, Jill Biden, ABC correspondent Jake Tapper asked White House spokesman Jay Carney the obvious question: “What’s the White House’s response to critics who say that, because of his role in the cover-up of how Pat Tillman actually died and the pain that he caused to the family of Pat Tillman, that Gen. McChrystal should not be on any sort of advisory committee having to do with military families?” A rambling answer on the importance of the initiative and helping military families brought this follow-up from Tapper: “Is the president aware of the role that Gen. McChrystal played in the cover-up when Pat Tillman died?” Carney answered that Obama is “very aware … of the general’s résumé.” Advertisement Her letters to Obama and members of Congress were unsuccessful, but she felt validated last June when the four-star general was forced from his position after audacious and embarrassing comments by him and his staff criticizing several White House officials were published in a Rolling Stone article. One of those ridiculed was Joe (“Who?” “Bite Me?”) Biden, making McChrystal’s appointment to a program co-headed by the vice president’s wife even more curious. It was in McChrystal’s job as head of the Joint Special Operations Command that he oversaw creation of the inaccurate Silver Star commendation for Tillman, who was a victim of fratricide in Afghanistan in April 2004. For five weeks, the truth about Tillman’s death was held hostage while the military deceived his family and the public with a false story of death by hostile fire, exploiting the former professional football player while stoking patriotic sentiment and support for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Silver Star award was central to the fantasy, and it was used as the centerpiece of the May 3, 2004, nationally televised memorial service for Tillman. The award citation contained misleading statements implying that Tillman was killed by the enemy, including that he “put himself in the line of devastating enemy fire” and enabled “his platoon’s safe passage from the ambush kill zone.” There was no hint that the devastating fire was from his platoon mates, who created the kill zone in which he died. Worse, the two eyewitness accounts were falsified, according to the Pentagon inspector general’s report on the Tillman case. The IG report, released March 26, 2007, stated that one eyewitness “recalled writing about Cpl. Tillman’s actions, and specifically recalled writing that Cpl. Tillman’s actions saved his life, but [he] stated that he did not sign the erroneous witness statement sent with Cpl. Tillman’s Silver Star recommendations. [He] also pointed out parts he knows he did not write and parts that were not accurate.” The second eyewitness statement was from a Ranger sergeant who, according to the IG report, “testified that he did not sign such a statement.” And though he “confirmed some parts of the valorous award witness statement as accurate and he identified other parts that he might have written … [he] also pointed out parts that were inaccurate, in that he was unable to see Cpl. Tillman’s actions from his location. Finally, [he] pointed to a phrase ‘in the most gallant Ranger fashion’ that he found ‘hokey’ and stated that it was a phrase he would not have written.” The inspector general concluded that “the purported statements” of the two soldiers, stamped “original signed,” were prepared by others, “but we were not able to identify the specific drafter.” The IG held McChrystal and two other officers “accountable for the inaccurate award recommendation.” McChrystal, in his 2009 Senate confirmation hearing, said he “would do this differently if I had the chance again.” He conceded that the tainted Silver Star citation “was not well-written.” Navy SEAL Steve White, the only active-duty member of the military to speak at Tillman’s memorial, told ESPN.com’s Mike Fish that about an hour before he ascended the stage, someone from the Army phoned him, asked that he announce the Silver Star award and “spoon fed” a story to him. He could not remember the name of the person who called, but he said, “They wanted me to let everyone know he was being awarded the Silver Star, posthumously, and all that. … I wanted to have an idea of what happened. So they told me their version at the time of what happened, which is the heroic tale that they initially came out with. I repeated it back. I summarized it and read it back. I said, ‘Does that sound accurate?’ He said, ‘Absolutely.’ ” White later was upset to learn that the story was phony. Announcing the award at Tillman’s memorial service, an action that led the 3,000 mourners present, plus the national television audience, to conclude he had been killed by the enemy, “was ill-advised and contributed to the continuing mistrust at Army representations to family members,” the IG report said, especially since top-ranking officers knew at the time that the likely cause of death was friendly fire. One of those officers was McChrystal, who approved the Silver Star citation on April 28, 2004, yet one day later wrote a memo to three top generals urging them to warn President George W. Bush and the secretary of the Army not to make “comments about Tillman’s heroism” in upcoming speeches in order “to preclude any unknowing statements by our country’s leaders which might cause public embarrassment if the circumstances of Corporal Tillman’s death become public.” Note the “if” and not “when.” It is bewildering and tasteless, after McChrystal’s callous disregard for the Tillman family throughout this entire episode, that Barack Obama should appoint him to a high-profile position having anything to do with helping military families. George Orwell’s, Nineteen Eighty Four has arrived where the
representatives of the Left are the Right and the Right, of course
continues to represent the Right only more forcefully and the Left’s
proles are totally unrepresented as the majority population’s class
and culture.
Dialectical political argument of leaders of the Left is invariably
argued by the Left within the framework of the political dialectical
framework of the Right; it is illogical for the Left to argue political
benefit and best interest of the Left using the frame of the political
dialectic of the Right, as dialectic is a logical loop that is causal in
nature; leaders of the Left arguing a causal loop that does not
support the thesis of their argument for the Left is not beneficial to
the best interest and outcome of the Left in their argument.
The majority population is deliberately not being represented
because leaders are throwing the majority population under the
bus, not just women, but the entire majority population is being
turned into slavery.
It took 40 years to bring the United States to the condition it is in
today, and in another 40 years the United States will be
unrecognizable as the same country we once lived in, if the lack of
representation of the majority population is allowed to continue.
“Most people don’t realize that prior to the 1970’s, there were no
corporate lobbyists on K Street. But since that time, they have
built an unprecedented web of power. And you can’t appease
people who are trying to keep you disconnected and in the dark.
It’s time to actively challenge the corporate influence in
Washington and build a movement that insists on real dialogue
and debate. And that depends on independent and inclusive
journalism. ”—Free Press Media Reform http://freepress.net
Real independent journalism would not accept the political dialectic
Report thisof the Right or the Left, but would argue for a dialectic of
measured and balanced benefit to both the Right and the Left. Fox
and all other major news media argues within the dialectic of the
Right against the dialectic of the Left and ignore dialectic of
communal benefit altogether. Currently there is no real dialog and
debate that is representative of the majority population—K Street
has taken over and there is no sense of community, only greed; a
sense of community needs to be restored if we are going to exist
as a nation.

I read Krakauer’s book and have seen the documentary. The Pentagon’s actions in Tillman’s regard were as despicable as expected. But that’s what I found so disheartining about the whole affair. Of all young volunteers, Pat Tillman should have known better. He was smart, educated and an avid reader of history, and yet he still bought into the war. If someone like Pat Tillman can be so brainwashed, what hope is there for the average unread, uninformed 18 year old?

@ Blackspeare
Yeah, right; the old bull manure—“don’t you know there’s a war (or two or three) on?!?” As far as I’m concerned, all three of America’s wars are illegal and unconstitutional because none of them were formally declared by Congress, as laid out in Article I, Section 8, clause 11.
I understand Sen. Lindsey Graham wishes devoutly for a way to shut up critics of the wars, a la WWII-style censorship. As I see it, that’s impossible without a formal congressional declaration, so he can kiss my great fat avoirdupois!
And if my attitude is “treasonable” and I’m “not supporting the troops” ... well, my way of “supporting the troops” is to insist that the idiotic wars ought to be ended and everyone brought home, so no one is killed, or maimed for life, or driven mad by PTSD for life. And if that means America is defeated and humiliated in front of the world, that’s tough. “National pride” strikes me as stiff-necked, and a proud, stiff-necked empire like this one deserves to be humbled.

Blackspeare, What ‘we people DO realize’ is the fact that we are still in three wars is a tragedy and a travesty. And that our ‘military elite’ respects a cretin like McChrystal is a strong indication of what’s wrong with the heads in the Pentagon. Just a thought about our modern generals such as Mcchrystal and our military overall:
We haven’t actually “won” a war since WWII and even that was an allied victory. (Please don’t throw out Grenada or Gulf I as “wins.” The first was a Ronald Reagan jerk-off and Gulf I was an incomplete.)
Generals of Mcchrystal’s vintage (served from 1976-2010) really don’t have any experience in military “success.” They have simply been managers of a largely bloated, ineffective and dysfunctional welfare program.

There was a quirky little film “Just A Gigilo” in which the tale revolved around a rather shallow young man in Germany leading up to Hitler. In this film the directionless young man finally allies with the Nazi’s and then meets an unfortunate death, not one that the party would wish to be made public.
The Nazis using all available publicity created a phony story about how this person was a super hero of the nation and died in heroic circumstance.
I am not claiming this is “quid pro quo” story except in the matter of powerful people using their positions of responsility and trust to manipulate the public into doing something against their own best interests and the interests of the country in general. The quality of the characters between the fictional one and the real one are not the same.
Tilman was not a phony patriot, although being blinded by ones patriotism to the true circumstance of service is probably fit subject for discussion, but not here.
Obama has made one more right wing decision under the cover of his supposed centerist/progressive administration. Once again I am forced to say in my opinion he lied to us about his goals as President and continues to present himself as the face of responsible administration, while continually validating extreme Right Wing insensitivity to the truth and to responsible management of the American Government. Never vote for him again, or the republicans either.

The better way to fill this need could have been to appoint not a military person but a small group of mothers and fathers who have lost sons or daughters in these useless wars. Without a doubt they would understand the problems of military families better than any other persons. They would also be able to make more authentic contacts with others who have lost their children. And,here are some excerpts from interviews with Amir Bar-Lev, the director of the documentary “The Tillman Story”:
“General McChrystal is just one of several high-ranking figures who’s never been called to account for his role, and the story continues to this very moment. He gets up there at his swearing-in [Senate confirmation hearing June 2, 2009] and basically says what has been said all along, which is, “I know what it looks like. I know that it looks like we deliberately covered it up, but believe us that it was this Rube Goldberg-esque chain of mistakes, blunders, and errors that look like a cover-up.”
“The only f—-ing idiots who buy that, the only fools who believe that, are the mainstream press. It’s just so clear to everyone else, and it’s the equivalent of saying, “Honey, I know that it looks like I’m f—-ing your sister, but actually I dropped my wallet, and then my belt fell down, and she happened to be there.” That’s what the military has done in the Pat Tillman case.”
“The public perception is that (the Tillmans) have been apologized to over and over again ... it’s ludicrous,” Bar-Lev said. “The idea there was a mistake is itself a lie. It’s a Rube Goldberg explanation. They (the military officials) say there was never any deliberate attempt to deceive anybody.” … “How somebody can get away with a lie that’s worse than ‘the dog ate my homework’ and that he would be put in charge of the war effort is ridiculous.”
” Listen, it’s not a complicated answer. No one in the government has ever admitted that there was a cover-up, and to watch the contortions that these public figures go to in order to publicly flagellate themselves without admitting what’s pretty obvious to everybody — that they tried to cover up Pat Tillman’s death — is absurd.”

In the foreword to the August 2010 paperback edition of her 2008 book, “Boots on the Ground by Dusk,” (see preview at blurb.com) Mary Tillman wrote:
“McChrystal’s actions should have been grounds for firing. That is why it was so disturbing to us when President Obama instead promoted McChrystal to the position of top commander in Afghanistan last year. [On May 12, 2009,] I had sent the President an email and a letter reminding him of McChrystal’s involvement in the cover-up of Pat’s death.”
“I had sent the President an email and a letter reminding him of McChrystal’s involvement in the cover-up of Pat’s death. In the letter, I suggested McChrystal should be “scrutinized very carefully” by the Senate Armed Services Committee. I also contacted the staffs of Senator Patrick Leahy and Senator James Webb [Note: I discussed Senator Webb’s role in my posts, especially “Did They Teach You How to Lie Yet?] and expressed my concerns. I had several conversations with members of the staffs of both senators, but it was clear that neither senator wanted to get involved.”
“… I had always believed Pat’s case was politically awkward for him [Senator McCain] and so he’d chosen to distance himself from the entire affair. … McCain was already publicly endorsing the McChrystal appointment before the hearing even began. … Sadly, McChrystal’s promotion had been sanctioned long before the hearing. None of the congressmen pressed McChrysal about Pat’s case … or detainee abuse and torture at Camp Nama …”
“Over the last five years, the Pentagon and Congress have had numerous opportunities to hold accountable those responsible for the cover-up of Pat’s death. Each time they’ve failed.”
“The Tillman Story illustrates the corruption, deception, and indifference that is systemic in our government. … The cover-up of Pat’s death was orchestrated at the very highest levels of the Pentagon, and elsewhere in our government … the government didn’t just lie to us; it lied to a nation.”

Just a couple weeks before the 7th anniversary of Pat Tillman’s friendly-fire death on April 22, 2004, I’d guess the Tillman family isn’t happy with yet another slap in their face by President Obama’s appointment of Gen. Stanley McChrystal as advisor of the new program “Joining Forces.”
Mary Tillman was critical of President Obama’s 2009 nomination of Gen. McChrystal and the bipartisan Congressional failure to hold him accountable for his central role in the Army’s cover-up of Pat Tillman’s friendly fire death.
In May 2004, Gen. McChrystal supervised the writing of Pat Tillman’s fraudulent Silver Star and the cover-up of his friendly-fire death by the Ranger RGT officers.
Over the next five years, the ensuing Army & Congressional “investigations” were part of the bi-partisan whitewash which “exonerated” Gen. McChrystal and others involved of wrong-doing.
For more details, I’d suggest Mary Tillman’s book “Boots on the Ground by Dusk” (revised paperback edition with a new forward at blurb.com), Jon Krakauer’s paperback edition “Where Men Win Glory” (although a flawed bio, it has details on McChrystal’s role in the Army’s cover-up), the fine documentary “The Tillman Story,” and my Feral Firefighter blog at http://www.feralfirefighter.blogspot.com
Last June, I posted “The Emperor’s General” which discussed President Obama’s role in the whitewash of Gen. McChrystal. Last August, I posted “The [Untold] Tillman Story” which discussed how a bi-partisan Congressional effort shielded McChrystal from accountability (and also the role of NYT reporter Thom Shanker and CNAS’s Andrew Exum). These posts present much of the source material and/or provide links if you want to “truth dig” a bit deeper.
Ironically, although Center for a New American Security (CNAS) will run the “Joining Forces” program, their Fellow Andrew Exum contributed to McChrystal’s whitewash with his biased book review of Jon Krakauer’s book for the Washington Post (he failed to fully disclose his professional and personal conflicts of interests with McChrystal).
Report thisConsidering their past betrayal of the Tillman family, it appears that Gen. McChrystal and CNAS are a poor choice to run the “Joining Forces” program to take care of our military veterans and their families.
