Walking While Black: The Killing of Trayvon MartinPosted on Mar 21, 2012
By Amy Goodman On the rainy night of Sunday, Feb. 26, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin walked to a convenience store in Sanford, Fla. On his way home, with his Skittles and iced tea, the African-American teenager was shot and killed. The gunman, George Zimmerman, didn’t run. He claimed that he killed the young man in self-defense. The Sanford police agreed and let him go. Since then, witnesses have come forward, 911 emergency calls have been released, and outrage over the killing has gone global. Trayvon Martin lived in Miami. He was visiting his father in Sanford, near Orlando, staying in the gated community known as The Retreat at Twin Lakes, where Zimmerman volunteered with the Neighborhood Watch program. The Miami Herald reported that Zimmerman was a “habitual caller” to the police, making 46 calls since January 2011. He was out on his rounds as a self-appointed watchman, packing his concealed 9 mm pistol, when he called 911: “We’ve had some break-ins in my neighborhood, and there’s a real suspicious guy ... this guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something.” Later in the call, Zimmerman exclaims, “OK. These a—holes always get away. ... [Expletive], he’s running.” Sounds of Zimmerman moving follow, along with a controversial utterance from Zimmerman, under his breath, considered by many to be “[Expletive] coons.” The sound of his running prompted the 911 operator to ask, “Are you following him?” Zimmerman replied, “Yeah,” to which the dispatcher said, “OK, we don’t need you to do that.” One of the attorneys representing the Martin family, Jasmine Rand, told me: “The term ‘coon’ on the audiotape ... is a very obvious racial slur against African-Americans. We also heard the neighbors come forward and say, ‘Yeah, in this particular neighborhood, we look for young black males to be committing criminal activity.’ And that’s exactly what George Zimmerman did that night. He found a young black male that he did not recognize, assumed that he did not belong there, and he targeted him.” Advertisement Eyewitnesses Mary Cutcher and Selma Mora Lamilla both heard the cries, which police say could have been from Zimmerman, thus supporting his claim, even though he had a gun and outweighed Trayvon Martin by 80 pounds. Cutcher said at a press conference: “I feel it was not self-defense, because I heard the crying. And if it was Zimmerman that was crying, Zimmerman would have continued crying after the shot went off. The only thing I saw that night—I heard the crying. We were in the kitchen. I heard the crying. It was a little boy. As soon as the gun went off, the crying stopped. Therefore, it tells me it was not Zimmerman crying.” Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee has defended his department’s decision not to arrest Zimmerman. They bagged Martin’s body and took it away, labeling him a “John Doe,” even though they had his cellphone, which anyone, let alone law enforcement with a shooting victim, could have used to easily identify a person. They tested Martin’s corpse for drugs and alcohol. Zimmerman was not tested. Neighbors say that Zimmerman loaded things into a U-Haul truck and left the area. So, while the police and State Attorney Norm Wolfinger have defended their inaction, a democratic demand for justice has ricocheted around the country, prompting a U.S. Justice Department investigation and leading Wolfinger to promise to convene a grand jury. The Rev. Glenn Dames, pastor of St. James AME Church in nearby Titusville, has called Martin’s death “a modern-day lynching.” His demand for the immediate arrest of Zimmerman was echoed by the organizers of the “Million Hoodie March” in New York City, named after the often racially stereotyped sweatshirt Martin was wearing in the rain when he was shot. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has called for the removal of Sanford Police Chief Lee. NAACP President Ben Jealous, recounting a mass meeting in a Sanford-area church Tuesday night, quoted a local resident who stood up and said, “‘If you kill a dog in this town, you’d be in jail the next day.’ Trayvon Martin was killed four weeks ago, and his killer is still walking the streets.” With his gun.

Why do sensible Americans think it’s sensible to allow
Report thispeople to wander the streets with side arms? We have
racism, vigilantism, and people bent on violence in
Canada too - and that’s precisely the reason we don’t
let citizens carry guns - unless they’re off to target
practise, hunting, or on-duty police officers. No
matter what Zimmerman and Martin thought, or what they
did, or said to each other, if Zimmerman hadn’t been
carrying a gun, it’s unlikely Martin would be dead. What an avoidable tragedy.

Zimmerman was an armed idiot. It is not necessary to kill on the first shot. Brandishing a firearm is usually a sufficient deterrent. A warning round into the ground is a sensible next step, followed by knee-capping or any incapacitating shot. Only in dire circumstance is a killing first shot in order, and just getting your ass kicked is not a dire situation.

Someone ahead of me referred to “Zimmerman’s crazed state of mind.”
Report thisI wish that “crazed state of mind” were limited to Zimmerman. But alas! It’s the exact mirror image of the (subconscious?) “state of mind” of millions of us “ordinary” Americans who fear and hate and permit horrendous wars to be conducted in our name, using our money.
It’s the same “state of mind” that allows huge wasted investment in “surveillance” equipment of every conceivable kind to “watch over” ourselves and each other as though we were all suspecting each other of evil designs.
The net result is a national “state of mind” not all that different from Zimmerman’s when you dare to stop and think about it.
Free floating anxiety fed by wars, propaganda, economic misrule and corrupt justice equals a country on the edge of self-destruction.

Mr. Zimmerman was clearly out looking to hurt someone when he murdered the boy. Mr. Zimmerman was not a public official and while he may have had a question about who the boy was, the police had already told him not to follow the boy further and that they would take care of the situation.
We don’t know the attitude of Zimmerman when he confronted the boy, but from his own mouth it seems he was probably belligerant, but even if he wasn’t, here is a large man confronting a child who was only returning home from a store. He must have made the boy think he was likely to be attacked and therefore anything the boy did to Zimmerman was triggered by this self appointed neighborhood patrolman. He had no right to shoot the boy and it was clearly a case of murder.
Now are we going to have justice are is one more gun nut going to be turned loose back into the public life after proving he can not be trusted?

Please, Rodney, please. You don’t mean cowboys. Cowboys are cattlemen, as hard-working folks as you will ever meet. My father’s family is full of them, members of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association. You mean GUNSLINGERS. There’s a world of difference. For example, George W Bush is no cowboy. He’s a gunslinger.

Florida the state that cocaine built. Florida is a lot like Illinois during Prohibition The Jack Johnson travesty. See [Ken Burns’s Unforgivable Blackness]. was done by corrupt Illinois and federal pols.I predict a White wash , excuse the pun, already we are in the the stall, dissemble , downplay mode. Its very unlikely that the killer will do hard time it would displease Cuban voters. Since a large number of black people are barred by various “legal” devices from voting in Fla. Obama will need some Cuban votes. So some slimy deal will be worked out with “community leaders” read Cubans , behind the scenes of course.

There is no doubt that the young man felt physically threatened himself, which kind of makes the whole law in question defeat itself. If I feel or felt threatened by anyone at anytime, I would most definitely present myself in a threatening manner (for obvious to anyone who lives a life reasons). It’s interesting how people who usually promote imprisonment are suddenly opposed to it for political reasons.
“If you kill a dog in this town, you’d be in jail the next day” is very helpful for me because there is a story on my local news that goes on and on about a dog who was shot and left for dead and lived and everyone is up in arms about it (as they should be)

Under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law” I wonder how many Black Men will get away with shooting White teenagers?

Jeb Bush signed into law “Stand Your Ground”; since 2005 there have been 93 case/ 65 deaths. The investigation load is so heavy that local officials aren’t investigating. They just refer the cases up to the state. Jeb Bush joins Sarah Palin with her crosshair gun rhetoric (which only stopped after the Arizona Congresswoman Gifford incident and deaths); both have blood on their hands.

I’m a little disappointed that the expletive was deleted from this report as it is quite germane to Zimmerman’s possible state of mind when confronting Mr. Martin.

When the woman (in the complex) had something to say that did not agree with the police she was dismissed and then the police said it was Zimmerman crying but as the woman stated the crying stopped when the shot rang out. I am sure the police did not know how many witnesses there were because they wanted the problem to go away.
Therefor they wanted this swept under the rug and did not notify the next of kin through his cellphone but if the victim had been white things would have been different.
That is why justice must be done and I hope the jury looks at the crime as a hate crime because the tape did say fu**ing coon and anyone who says different is trying to just justify the self defense claim.

I keep waiting to read or hear someone say the obvious: there was, from all accounts, absolutely nothing “scary” about Trayvon Martin except that he was black. So not prosecuting his killer, even with the Florida Stand Your Ground law taken into consideration, says that it was reasonable for Zimmerman to be afraid of the boy’s blackness. What does it mean for our society if we legitimate fear of blackness?

“Zimmerman was behaving in Florida like the American policy protected Zionist “settlers” voluntarily policing Palestine do… and like the U.S. kill squads behaving like Israelis in Afghanistan.”
A very accurate analogy David and with a common basis:
Denigration of what too many think as sub human because they have been raised that way.
And there are those on this site who rush to alibi the behavior of the immoral just as the Police in Sanford, have chosen to do - Get out of my sight nigger, Raghead, Haji, kike, - and the blasphemer goes on in his smugness assuring himself that he belongs to the “Good” group and basks in his “goodness”.
The Biblical good Samaritan saw the victim as a victim, and did what he could to give aid and comfort - something I don’t believe Zimmermann or his protectors, the police, would ever consider.

Stupid, stupid. When I was young I thought the police where on the street to defend us, but incidents like giving a pass for murder? That is very disturbing.
Mr. Zimmerman by his actions and words clearly killed the boy because he was black. The one thing the police officials did right was to tell him not to continue to follow the boy”. But, Mr. Zimmerman continued to follow the boy and in fact confronted the boy and killed him.
I believe that this was a murder. That it was a murder that happened because of the color of the boy’s skin. If it were not than Mr. Zimmerman would have obeyed the police instruction not to continue following the boy.
Mr. Zimmerman should either be in prison or on way to execution. He forfeited control of his life when he decided to commit murder.

In America we have driving and walking while black.
Report thisIn stores while shopping’ we are followed for being
black. There is still a huge fear of black people in
the country. The darker you are, the more you are
feared.I know the reason most states, particularly
southern states allow cowboys to carry their guns is
because of their fear of blacks. They want to be able
to intimidate or kill any black person that they
perceive to be a threat. No matter how innocent that
person is. Just like the 1800’s they use their guns
to keep blacks in their place during slavery, guns and
intimidation are used to keep blacks out of
neighborhoods. One thing I know if George Bush or any
other Republican were President, the Justice
Department would not investigate this incident. They
would chalk it up as cowboys being cowboys and one
less dead nigger they have to worry about!

This domestic (state-side) incident imitates this nation’s predatory foreign policy.
Zimmerman was behaving in Florida like the American policy protected Zionist “settlers” voluntarily policing Palestine do… and like the U.S. kill squads behaving like Israelis in Afghanistan.
Obamanation resolutely and materially supports the “justice” dispensed (with malignant malice aforethought) by the Zionists occupying Palestine.
It’s “American” to behave like an Israeli, because Israel’s fascism is modeled upon America’s past history of highly successful “cleansing” strategies.

Heartbreaking…and yet so many on the Right want to insist that we’re in a post-
racial society. That said, the ridiculous Stand Your Ground law must be repealed; it
is a monstrous piece of legislation sponsored and backed by the National Rifle
Association that encourages every cop wannabe to claim his moment of glory and,
more ridiculously, if there are no witnesses, the shooter merely has to claim that the
shooting was in self-defense, and it’s up to the victim – even if the victim is dead –
to prove that he or she was no threat. What a law. Unreal.
