Truthdiggers of the Week: Planned Parenthood SupportersPosted on Feb 3, 2012
With all the worries about corporate colonization of the Internet and the specter of online censorship getting spookier all the time, it’s important to acknowledge the ways in which the Web can still be used for the greater good. That’s why we salute as our Truthdiggers of the Week all those who quickly mobilized, both online and in the analog world, to protest against and ultimately help reverse a policy of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation that would have denied funding to Planned Parenthood. The breast cancer charity released a statement Friday in an effort to do some serious backpedaling after making the poorly received choice, revealed earlier in the week, to block funding to Planned Parenthood outposts based on a rationale that just happened to dovetail nicely with an anti-abortion agenda. Here’s a quick sum-up of that inciting incident.
It’s also worth noting that the Times editors pointedly remarked about how the foundation’s politicized stance could impact its branding and corporate sponsorship: “In addition to harming women,” they wrote Thursday, “the foundation has also tarnished, perhaps permanently, its brand, symbolized by the pink ribbon that adorns yogurt cups and running shoes and tote bags and Federal Premium Ammunition’s pink shotgun shells. Companies like Ford Motor, Dell and Yoplait may not find the same value in identifying themselves with the foundation after its sharp departure from political neutrality.” By Friday, the message had clearly been received by higher-ups at Susan G. Komen for the Cure (and indeed their ranks had thinned a bit by then). Here’s the gist of Friday’s apology:
Planned Parenthood appreciated the widespread support, President Cecile Richards said in a written statement Friday. “The outpouring of support for women in need of lifesaving breast cancer screening this week has been astonishing and is a testament to our nation’s compassion and sincerity,” said Richards. By then, the celebration was well under way online, where much of the protest had taken hold.

This is miserable journalism. Planned “Parent” hood is a for profit corporation.

It is unimportant if Planned Parenthood is a corporation. The Fund
is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit corporation formed
as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation
of America and is a founding member of the International Planned
Parenthood Federation.
George Will is wrong. Most of Planned Parenhood’s services, a
whopping 71%, are for birth control and testing and treatment of
sexually transmitted diseases. Abortions made up 3% of its services
in 2010. Cancer screening accounted for close to 15%. Most Planned
Parenthood’s clients are too young for breast cancer screening under
most guidelines, although they are prime age for cervical cancer
screening, about 80% are under 35. Of the 311,800,000 people in
the US, 50.8% are females. But,49% of that are females over the age
of 14. That is 158,394,400 women. Women in America are more likely
to be poor than men. More than half of the 37 million Americans living
in poverty today are women. And, women in America are further behind
where the gap in poverty rates between men and women is wider in than
anywhere else in the Western world. The following facts tells the rancid
tale: Women are poorer than men in all racial and ethnic groups. Recent
data shows that 26.5 % of African American women are poor compared
to 22.3% of African American men; 23.6% of Hispanic women are poor
compared to 19.6%of Hispanic men; 10.7% of Asian women are poor
compared to 9.7% of Asian men; and 11.6% of white women are poor
compared to 9.4% of white men.
Women are paid less than men, even when they have the same
qualifications and work the same hours. Women who work full time
earn only 77%of what men make. that is a 22% gap in average annual
wages. Discrimination, not lack of training or education, is largely the
cause of the wage gap. Even with the same qualifications, women earn
less than men. In 2007, full time, year round female workers aged 25 to
32 with a bachelor’s degree were paid 14% less than men. Women are
segregated into low paying occupations, and occupations dominated by
women are low paid. Women spend more time providing unpaid
caregiving than men. Women are more likely to bear the costs of raising
children. Pregnancy affects women’s work and educational opportunities
more than men’s. Domestic and sexual violence can push women into a
cycle of poverty. Therefore, women are less able to afford quality health
care. The historic need for a feminist movement is obvious. Women
have been subjugated since time beyond memory by the brutality and
insensitivity of men.
We could go on and on and on about the disparity between women and
men. Fact: Women own their own bodies not men.
Planned Parenthood services: http://bit.ly/wWg2ZC

If women lament, it is with just cause. Here is what needs to be done.
Report thisPlanned Parenthood will now receive all donations I would have sent to
Komen. Donations to Komen must be made only upon inspection of
how they are using the funds. Before I give them another penny, an
annual public accounting needs to be published. The executives of
Komen are questionable at best at their intentions to help women
especially poor women. An attack on Planned Parenthood is an attack
on poor women. And we have to understand clearly that the war to
dehumanize women is failing. “The debate over healthcare is basically
about this ultimate fight over whether or not women are people.
Conservatives see women as objects. Sex and reproduction the way
the objects are used, and like with any other property, how and who
uses it is the whole point. That’s why abstinence-only classes compare
sexually active women to lollipops that have been opened and licked, or
toothbrushes that someone else has used….” perfectly said by Amanda
Marcotte, The Guardian UK, Feb. 3.

Planned Parenthood is a corporation which mobilized its supporters and its paid lackeys in the government to put enormous pressure on a charitable foundation for the sake of cold hard cash. It is the recipe for what you call fascism, and it triumphed.
The fact that you celebrate that triumph without any hesitation proves that you arent serious when you complain about ‘fascism’ ...which you are supposedly on the alert against… and which you blame me for supporting.
Just to be clear about this, it doesnt bother me in the least that people expressed their displeasure at the Komen Foundation. I do not wish for you or anyone else to be silenced. Enjoy your victory.

What’s interesting about America is its contradictions. We are at
once a progressive country where gay rights supporters are slowly
changing laws to allow marriage. We are a reactionary country where
fundamentalist Christians are slowly passing laws giving embryos the
rights of fully developed human beings.
Who’s winning? Hard to tell.
What we are seeing less of at the moment is the reactionary right.
It’s been a long time since a jackass carrying a sign showing an
aborted fetus stepped off a curb and into the street to block my
path. The war on drugs is a most unpopular war. And no shitbirds in
Congress are currently advocating a constitutional amendment calling
for an end to flag burning.
Some of this lean to the left and a turn to the progressive is simply
a sign of the times. Like it or not, acknowledge it or not, America,
its allies and its enemies treated Arabs and the Middle East as dogs.
We abused them. We armed them. We taught them to fight. We paid them
to guard our interests. We destroyed their cultures. We were shocked
and extremely pissed off us when they attacked us.
Now, even if we can only admit it tacitly as a country, we know
what’s going on. We were fools to allow our country and the world to
depend on fossil fuels for so long. We were fools not to change our
energy policy decades ago. Fools to stick with economic policies
that forced us to support aggressive and a self-defeating foreign
policy. Fools to let our leaders divide us while they destroyed our
education system and thoughtlessly built unsustainable cities and
allowed massive corporations to take over our news outlets and buy
congress and the presidency on the cheap.
We know this now even if most of us are not raising hell about it.
And thankfully the Occupy movement is raising hell about it for us.
They have done it in an ingenious way, not by aligning themselves
with any of the major turds that are the Republican and Democratic
Parties; not by issuing demands to the media; but by simply being
there and getting out their message.
The news media, of course, has boiled the message down to this: The
Occupy movement is against corporate greed, which suits the
simplistic minds of the turds in the corporate news media. It is
simple. It is vaguely true. Journalists don’t have to do any
research to make their point.
But of course the Occupy movement is about much more. Many, many,
many protesters understand the core of the problem comes from a
century-old court decision giving corporations protection under the
fourteenth amendment of the US constitution. The media largely
ignores the “Corporations are not people” signs because it would take
research and faith in the intelligence of their audience to explain.
The movement, too, implicitly criticizes US foreign and energy
policies, because it was largely our being in a state of perpetual
war protecting an insane energy policy that led to our equally insane
economic policies.
Many progressive and libertarians understand all of this in exquisite
detail. Many other Americans grasp it intuitively. They don’t have
a job. They lost their house. Their kids’ schools suck. Businesses
screw them at every turn. The politicians they elect don’t change
much. It’s hot as fuck.
All in all even the dimmest and least politically attuned are wising
up. We’ve been squabbling among ourselves about abortion, making fun
of environmentalists, being happily racist about the Middle East and
everywhere else, not believing the climate is changing, believing the
economic system is fair enough, believing we have free speech.
Suddenly, all we know is wrong. And we’re realizing it. Planned
Report thisParenthood is one of the good guys. The abortion debate is about
destroying women’s access to birth control. Overpopulation is a
much more serious problem than abortion, as is cancer. The tide is
turning. People are wising up. Slowly.

We know that corporations are an evil part of the system. they are proving the end of capitalism and democracy. Interesting how consistantly Truthdiggers point that out.
One little detail should bother you about all this.
Have you forgotten that Planned Parenthood is a corporation? The Truthdigger of the Week award celebrates a corporation’s ability to mobilize its supporters via its colonization of the Internet, including this website. Lets also note the corporation’s well organized influence in Washington DC, and how such fascist practices are usually frowned upon here at Truthdig.

When I first heard that Komen had cut off Planned Parenthood (PP), I went to the Komen website to find their financial reports and tax returns (hidden somewhat, link at the bottom under “disclosures,” follow from there). I was disgusted to see the number of (as it turns out) Republican wags and hags who were insiders in the organization, paying themselves huge salaries ($450,000 for the top dog, $200,000 for many, and the high $100s for lots more). Apparently when they use the word “charity,” they don’t mean that this is a community effort to help others; they see it as a slush fund for the insiders.
Then I tried to figure out how much money do they have (it appears about $200 Million in Wall Street) and what do they do with all the money they get every year.
To my dismay, only seven percent (7%) of the hundreds of millions of dollars they raise goes to treatment of women. All those women in this country who cannot afford mammograms, can’t afford to even go to a doctor, can’t afford cancer treatment, and the Komen group, which proclaims itself a women’s breast cancer group, only uses 7% of their money to actually get help for American women.
So where does the money go? They pay a bundle to I assume Republican marketing companies. Hold lots of conventions and get-togethers. Travel overseas and hold conferences there. While women here continue to die.
Much of the money is given to universities. Here is where it also gets troubling. They give money to University 1 (we’ll leave them unnamed) to use in research. University 1 comes up with something, what happens? They sell or license it to a pharmaceutical company which makes drugs that most of us cannot afford, charge exorbitant amounts, and sell them to the heavily insured wealthy Republican women.
It seems to me that if any money is given by a charity to any university for research, there should be a condition attached that any results from that university belong to the public. We get the licensing or sale proceeds, we control the price at which the drug is sold. Or, god forbid, we decide that the drug will be distributed at cost. Like Salk did with the polio vaccine, more interested in saving lives than in getting rich.
I won’t give Komen any more money. No yogurt lids, no pink ribbons, no nothing. Planned Parenthood does a much better job of providing direct medical aid to women in this country. I gave money yesterday, and from now on they will receive my contributions to women’s health needs.
Komen opened up a can of worms. I’m glad they did. I am also thrilled at the number of posts I saw on facebook with the link to donate to planned parenthood, the outrage at Komen’s and the Republican right wing’s continued assaults on women, and the amazing and fast way that the citizens fought back.
I read that Planned Parenthood received Three Million Dollars in the past few days. That’s a few very generous donations, including from the really terrific Mayor Bloomberg who took the better position, and did so publicly, and put his money behind it, including the matching funds to encourage others to give. But it’s also an awful lot of ten dollar donations from working men and women across the nation. It’s rare that we win, or get such a good result. It’s a good day.
