Truthdigger of the Week: Naomi Wolf

Every week, Truthdig recognizes an individual or group of people who spoke truth to power, blew the whistle or stood up in the face of injustice. You can see past winners here, and make your own nomination for our next awardee here.

On Tuesday night, The Huffington Post hosted a black-tie event that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was expected to attend. Occupy Wall Street protesters caught wind of Cuomo’s expected presence and decided to protest outside the venue in an effort to win an audience with him. Author and feminist Naomi Wolf, one of the guests attending the event and our Truthdigger of the Week, saw the protesters standing on the fringe of the event as she arrived and decided she wanted to help them understand and exercise their rights. She was arrested for her efforts.

In an article she wrote for The Guardian the next day, Wolf gave a detailed account of the events that led to her arrest and explained her motivation for going out of her way to try to help the protesters.

“On our exit, I saw that the protesters had been cordoned off by a now-massive phalanx of NYPD cops and pinned against the far side of the street—far away from the event they sought to address,” Wolf wrote. “I went up and asked [the officers] why. They replied that they had been informed that The Huffington Post event had a permit that forbade [the protesters] to use the sidewalk. I knew from my investigative reporting on NYC permits that this was impossible: A private entity cannot lease the public sidewalks; even film crews must allow pedestrian traffic. I asked the police for clarification—no response.”

Then Wolf, having determined that it was unconstitutional for police to keep protesters so far from the event, led them single-file across the sidewalk in question. She was arrested for “disorderly conduct.”

In nominating Wolf, Truthdig reader John said he respected Wolf for “challenging the unreasonable and unconstitutional demands of the NYPD,” and for “her willingness to be arrested for refusing those demands.”

Honorable Mention

On Oct. 15, the day Occupy Wall Street set aside as a day of action for the movement, U.S. Marine Corps. Sgt. Shamar Thomas was caught on video telling off New York police for being overly forceful with peaceful protesters. “This is not a war zone,” he told officers, pointing to service badges on the military fatigues he opted to wear while protesting. “These are unarmed U.S. citizens!” The passion Thomas displayed while confronting police seems to have hit a nerve with a lot of people because the video, after less than a week, has seen almost 2 million views. Truthdig reader Dory explained well the emotion that has seemed to fuel those millions of views: “This remarkable young man protected his fellow citizens against the NYPD and won. God bless him for putting his life on the line for us all, both in Iraq and on the streets of New York. He is my new hero!”

The petty squabbling in some of these posts is really
sad.  So a well-dressed woman who writes for a living
(“feminist blatherings”??? uh, who’s a sexist pig,
then?) and isn’t a 24-year-old street fighter is a
“shill” and her brave stand for civil rights is “co-
opting” OWS???  And because she “disobeyed a direct
order” from the police and walked down a public
sidewalk, she is wrong?  Since when are direct orders
from the police to give up our rights okay? Some of
these posts sound so extremely leftist that I have to
think they are… TROLLS.  Naomi Wolfe, Sgt. Thomas,
Arianna Huffington:  BRAVO, I say.

From the Declaration of Independence

“We hold these truths to be self evident
That all men are created equal
That they are endowed by their creator
With certain unalienable rights to
Life, Liberty
and the Pursuit of Happiness
That to secure these rights
Governments are formed

But whenever any form of government
Becomes destructive

It is the Right of the People
It is their Duty

To throw off such government”

I congratulate Naomi Wolf on her sudden outbreak of courage.

Her anti-Fascism campaign during the Bush administration was also extremely valuable - if she hadn’t dropped it as soon as a Democrat was elected.  In fact, Obama has carried Bush’s fascist policies even further, prosecuting and even torturing whistleblowers, for only one example.  Yet Wolf has been notably silent, to the point that I wondered whether she’d taken cover out of fear.

Several other commenters have condemned her commitment to the Democratic Party, and that would explain her silence; I don’t know that for myself.  But there is a sign here that she’s waking up.

I hope so.  An anti-fascist campaign is at least as necessary now as it was then, and Wolf has the ear of a lot of people.

Note that OWS is perfectly clear that the Democrats are just as much the problem as the Republicans.  So I’ll second Not One More’s point:

“Vote third party, don’t give your consent to the status quo.”

I was at OCW last Friday to defend against eviction.

After the City backed down, there were marches down Broadway (“Who’s street? Our
street”).

Walking, I tried to take a left at Wall Street. Cops had barricades up and were only
allowing people with employee ID to enter. they would not let me walk on the
sidewalk.

I objected and asked the Commanding officer on what basis he could block me from
walking on a public sidewalk, yet allow others to pass.

He said the street was “private property”!

Imagine that, NYC cops say that Wall Street, the 400 year old street that fronts
Federal Hall with there Continental Congress met and George Washington was
sworn as first US president, is private property!

True?

Huffington Post massive censorship in Arianna’s attempt to be politically correct and make hundreds of millions of dollars for herself, is disconcerting.

I had read her books, listened to some of her lectures/speeches and I even had outlined what she wrote about how fascism developed in an “incremental way”,in a society and eventually control such a society with distinction, through what she called a “fascist shift”,as the fascists reaches a comfortable zone within the social order or disorder of a society and publiclly declare their agenda.

I salute Truthdig for selecting her as “The Truthdigger of the Week”.

Naomi Wolf deserves such a recognition and deserves more. She has talked the talk and walked the walk and would pay the price for her sincere activities.

I wish her well…......

While Ms. Wolf may think she was right, when she disobeyed a direct order from a police officer who was enforcing a ruling of which she had no personal knowledge, she broke the law.  But, I have another bone to pick with Ms. Wolf.  I caught her on Olbermann on Friday night, and was surprised to hear her say that the First Amendment of the U. S. Constitution obligates American citizens to revolt against their government.  Last time I looked it gave citizens the RIGHT to free speech, free assembly, and to petition for redress from the government - IT DID NOT OBLIGATE THEM TO REVOLT AGAINST THEIR GOVERNMENT IF THEY DID NOT AGREE WITH IT!  What she may have been referring to is a comment by Thomas Jefferson that it can be a healthy thing for citizens to revolt against a government if it fails to meet the needs of citizens, as was in the Declaration of Independence.  It is not an obligation and it is not in the Constitution.  If Ms. Wolf wants to get people to support the OWS movement that is fine, but making comments like that only inflames people and is not productive.

I find it sad that everyone thinks that the Arab Spring should be emulated here in the United States.  Has no one, including Ms. Wolf, noticed that we are not a dictatorship; that even though corrupted, our elections are held regularly and we elect our officials (the good, the bad, and the horrific); that if we want to change how we govern we can elect different representatives; and that unlike the Middle Eastern nations, we are a huge nation of over 300 million people who have a Constitution that while battered still stands as the law of the land?

If we do not like what is going on, then run for office and make change happen.  Get everyone you know to run for office, not just sit around and gripe.  Force change from within the government by becoming part of it - that is what caused change in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.  (And it is what Wall Street and the GOP understand, even if no one else does - control the Congress and you can enforce anything you want on the people) Maybe it is time for Ms. Wolf to stop deciding what the Constitution obligates people to do, read and understand the document, and then maybe she can avoid arrest and speak out with helpful suggestions that do not use terminology that is misleading and could lead to violence that is unnecessary and unwarranted at this time.

Divisiveness seems alive and strong from looking at some of the posts here.  Many right wing folks believe we lost the Vietnam war due to the protesters, and many white wing folks believe we lost good old boy racism due to Marten Luther King protests, not many opportunists are scared they will end their era of corruption and capitalist cronyism and may even end up like other corrupt dictators!

Before I read this article I just wanted to say…

First to Naomi Wolf, I liked your movie.

Second…. for goodness sake, I was so blown away, moved, encouraged, charmed, and inspired by the Democracy Now interview with Nobel laureate Tawakkul Karman which can be viewed here…

I hereby nominate her for Truthdigger of next week.

Wolf has always struck me as a publicity hound and opportunist.

I really don’t see how her support of the irredeemably corrupt Democratic Party, her contributions to the absurd identity-politics movement in this country, and her feminist blatherings over the years have helped anybody but herself and a few of her sisters.

Big deal, she got arrested. When was she released, 10 minutes afterwards?

It’s a shame that the police didn’t arrest all of the self-important tossers at the Huffington Post event.

They’d have done the citizenry and the culture a huge and long-overdue favor.

We need a million soldiers like him to stand up! His rant brought tears to my eyes. Someone who has already given so much and is willing to help. He deserves a medal for bravery.

Perhaps the cops stood down because the soldier had on the uniform and they did not really know what to do. Anybody else probably would have been taken to jail because they would have felt more powerful.

Since when have cops been allowed to break the law and ignore the Constitution? Anytime they want. It is obvious who they work for. Certainly not us. They will do whatever it takes to control us just as instructed.

The power brokers in charge want the protesters to disappear so get ready for the brutality. The media has been preparing the sheeple for it for quite some time! Remember “Don’t tase me bro!” That was just the beginning of the end of our right to protest.

I love Naiomi for standing up to them for what is right. My heart bleeds for our country.

At Huffington Post’s Request - Squash Your Rights

Think about it, the Huffington Post, another supposed left leaning media outlet (not!) requesting the protests conveniently moved out of sight and out of mind. And the police are carrying out their illegal demand. The establishment of free speech caged zones (sometimes relocated to actual jails by our corporate compliant police) are carried out equally by democrats and republicans.

When democrats start getting as pissed at democratic party antics (like the free speech caged zones during the presidential conventions) as they do republican antics, then things might change.

As long as people allow for lying and cheating as long as they benefit, things will continue as they are, and the wars, the cheating, the lack of health care etc.

Vote third party, don’t give your consent to the status quo.
