Truthdigger of the Week: Anna HazarePosted on Aug 19, 2011
Every week, Truthdig recognizes an individual or group of people who spoke truth to power, blew the whistle or stood up in the face of injustice. You can see past winners here, and make your own nomination for our next awardee here. This week, a 74-year-old man staging a peaceful hunger strike against government corruption in India has captured the imagination of hundreds of thousands, invoking the methods and practices of Mahatma Gandhi. That man, social activist and anti-corruption proponent Anna Hazare, is our Truthdigger of the Week. While Hazare made his name as an anti-corruption activist decades ago, this particular battle began back in April, when he first staged a five-day hunger strike to urge the Indian Parliament to consider a bill that would put a lokpal, or ombudsman, in place to investigate and punish political corruption. This week, Hazare attempted to begin his hunger strike anew, and the events that ensued brought him and the bill he is supporting international attention. On Tuesday, Hazare was jailed after refusing to give up plans he had made for a peaceful public protest. When he was granted freedom from the high-security prison just 12 hours later, he refused to leave—or eat—until police agreed to allow him to protest publicly. On Thursday, with thousands of his supporters protesting on the streets all across India, police gave in and agreed to allow Hazare to stage a 15-day hunger strike against government corruption. On Friday, the hunger strike began at the fairgrounds in New Delhi. And despite monsoon rains turning the grounds to mush, thousands joined Hazare. And while relatively few across the world can be there in person, many thousands are with him in spirit. As Truthdig reader Mark Lindley said in his nomination of Hazare: “Lots of courageous people speak truth to power under various circumstances, and lots of those who do are thoroughly honest people. But very few honest people speaking truth to power manage to be so widely heard and supported as Anna Hazare.” * * * Advertisement Mega-billionaire and investor god Warren Buffett has been speaking out again this week in favor of taxing the super-rich, most notably in his New York Times Op-Ed piece, “Stop Coddling the Super-Rich.” While it’s certainly easier to speak truth to power when you already have so much power (read: money), Buffett’s openness and urgency in the article were refreshing: “Last year my federal tax bill — the income tax I paid, as well as payroll taxes paid by me and on my behalf — was $6,938,744. That sounds like a lot of money. But what I paid was only 17.4 percent of my taxable income — and that’s actually a lower percentage than was paid by any of the other 20 people in our office. Their tax burdens ranged from 33 percent to 41 percent and averaged 36 percent.” In his nomination of Buffett, Truthdig reader CJ said: “Someone had better get to raising taxes, and any rich guy who says so is worthy of something. Especially under circumstances of such profound selfishness on the part of elites, and lots of non-elites too.”

If Buffet is half-way in denial / the dark / hasn’t a fathom of the economic slavery machination he is a part of but…. or knows and bows to Baal in full conscience submission, is one thing to point out and another thing to forgive and hope God bless him either way, either with hot coals or a heart made of flesh.

@ Napolean: ..... Oh wait a second.
Buffet made/makes Billions off you and your families,
helps steal land, homes, property and your possessions, mainly your guns,
puts 70+ Million people on the street,
takes away your Rights,
spreads mostly lies and bullshit,
many other illegal and Unlawful acts,
hides behind many layers of their legal system,
commits Treason ...and you’re going to give him a “very commendable” promo?
With all due respect ... which tree you fall out of?
What’s worse is the one whom nominated him.

Agreed we are under a system of tribute to the central bank owners / the crown / City of London and her majesty ( nobody important ).... yet this is the system we find ourselves under.
I was commending Warren on his words.. now whether he follows through we shall see. And sure, it is easy to be benevolent when you have allot…
Don’t underestimate people Gabriel, not everyone who peruses TD is an idiot.

Honorable Mention?
Are most US citizens daft, dumb, stupid and blind?
Don’t you know your own history?
If you look at the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Constitution AND documents surrounding them ... such as early drafts, Newspaper articles, books, flyers, letters etc. you will find it’s all about preventing British from imposing Usury / charging interest, imposing taxes, abusive service charges and any other scheme to steal from Americans.
It’s the main premise for Freedom Liberty Happiness and Justice for All.
Get it yet?
No? Go read and study then.
Still not?
Usury is considered one of the biggest sins throughout history, an act of Treason against an individual, city, state, country or nation.
- it is clearly stated that anyone charging interest / Usury should be punished by death. Clear enough for you?
Go try and send a bill to City Hall and then try to charge interest on that bill. They won’t even take you to court, you will have an accident and end up 6 ft under, and no one will know whom did it.
Go try to charge interest to your neighbor. You won’t last too long in that hood or you will be an outcast for the rest of our life.
Warren Buffet is playing a shell game with your mind. He clearly charges interest to his customers / US citizens. An act of Treason.
The only ones to pay taxes originally were Merchants / businesses.
Businesses paid up to 95% taxes and had to build roads, and rest of infrastructure. Why are you, the Citizen, paying for them now?
Mr Buffet presents too little too late in hopes of being spared when the masses go wild or actual Justice is served.
As with any shill systems there’s always one that promotes what they all should be doing all along as a token patsy ... yet still only a part of that truth.
I thought this was supposed to be “Truthdig, drilling beneath the headlines”,
Is that a yes or a no?
... because from what I and many others see this website is getting really pathetic and/or has been taken over by Merchant shills.
Wake Up already!

Truth alone will endure, all the rest will be swept away before the tide of time. I must continue to bear testimony to truth even if I am forsaken by all. Mine may today be a voice in the wilderness, but it will be heard when all other voices are silenced, if it is the voice of Truth.

For all his faults ( as we all are fallible and failures in one way or another ), this is very commendable of him and Warren should be noted for such a stance.
