Truthdigger of the Week: Amy GoodmanPosted on Sep 23, 2011
Every week, Truthdig recognizes an individual or group of people who spoke truth to power, blew the whistle or stood up in the face of injustice. You can see past winners here, and make your own nomination for our next awardee here. Late Wednesday night, the state of Georgia executed Troy Davis, a man who had been on death row for 20 years for the murder of an off-duty police officer. Many people doubted Davis’ guilt after seven of nine witnesses in the case changed or recanted their testimony, and a number of people—from the pope and Archbishop Desmond Tutu to former President Jimmy Carter and an ex-FBI director—spoke out against executing a man who could very well be innocent. But as the Davis case held the world’s attention, the only news outlet to broadcast live continuously from the prison grounds on the night of his execution was “Democracy Now!” and its host and executive producer, Amy Goodman, our Truthdigger of the Week. Goodman stood with protesters outside the execution chambers with camera and crew for what was intended to be a two-hour special but which ended up going for more than six hours. Goodman was there to capture the emotional moment when the crowd learned from NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous that the Supreme Court had issued a (very) temporary stay, and she stayed to interview person after person about any and all details of the night. Her broadcast made more information available to the world in real time than any other news source that night, and her poise and clear-headedness throughout the ordeal brought needed comfort to a distraught audience. For most people, as Truthdig reader Melissa said, “Amy Goodman’s coverage of the Troy Davis lynching brought the world the only live coverage [and] the only honest coverage. Her fierce dedication is deserving of any journalist award, if they indeed carry merit.”
* * * Honorable Mentions Advertisement Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren made waves on the Internet this week when a video of a speech she gave in August in Andover, Mass., went viral. As Truthdig reader Jeff put it in nominating her, Warren “called out the GOP on their inane ‘class war[fare]’ rhetoric.” And while some have knocked Warren for her inexperience—this is her first-ever run for political office—her message on taxation has voters thinking she may be just what the doctor ordered. That message? “There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody.”

Maani: You are absolutely correct in that the official story has been falling apart from the beginning. I believe that we are now coming to a point where the mainstream media will have to address the gaping holes in the government story and the coverup that was the 9/11 commission in light of the stories that have come out over just the past month. We are now finding out that the FBI lied about Saudi involvement in the attacks. And we are finding out that two of the hijackers were CIA assets working with the CIA inside the US. The CIA withheld this information from the FBI and then lied about the whole thing to the 9/11 Commission.
And we still have people carrying on about how the ‘truthers’ have been debunked. On the contrary, they are becoming more vindicated with each passing day.

Interesting that Elizabeth Warren appears in a video here.. I’ve previously given my positive opinion of Goodman, here’s something on the Warren Campaign..
I like her and hope she succeeds.. If you make a contribution to her campaign (as I did) you have to go through ‘ACT BLUE’ a third party fundraising and data accumulating entity..
You’ll get an immediate automated response from Act Blue and Ms. Warren’s machine.. much thanks! We’re with you! We need more and so on.. IF you attempt to reply to the addresses given you get NADA, ZIP, ZERO .. empty air.
I consider my modest donation well invested.. yet if I had expected any personal attention from the Warren campaign I’d be disappointed.. Act Blue? .. all I inquired of them was an assurance that none of my money would go anywhere except to Warren for the Senate.. they would not make even so small an assurance.

I too wish that Democracy Now would provide more coverage of the 9/11 cover-ups. RememberBuilding7.org is now running an effective ad campaign in New York. Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth have built a strong case. And, now, we are learning about the FBI’s coverup of Saudi involvement. It really is time for a brave journalist to take on this story that has become the elephant in the room.

I am not sure where you are getting your information, but the truth is that the “official story” has been falling apart almost since it was created, while alternative theories have been getting stronger with each new relevation of the former. Indeed, you mention Skeptical Inquirer. As a long-time reader (every issue for at least the past five years), it is true that they have produced a number of articles re 9/11, but I wouldn’t call them “good work.” In fact, in a recent article about the collapse of WTC7, the writer offered links to two “scientific papers” that he claimed debunked the controlled demolition theory. I read both of those papers, in their entirety. One of them did not even address WTC7 AT ALL! In fact, it was an abstract about other aspects of the 9/11 collapses. The other paper was filled with holes so big - and so obvious, even to the lay reader - that it was easy to dismiss as weak.
More importantly, however, the most recent article in SI about 9/11 Truth was - dare I say it? - “neutral” with respect to claims about WTC7. In fact, this is how a publication that has been myopically dismissive of alternative theories “saves face”: first, they print an article in which they simply take no position at all (i.e., a “neutral” article). That article is then followed up, usually in short order, by an article in which they provide a “platform” for something they have dismissed in the past. I am predicting that SI will publish such an article by mid-2012, if not sooner.
The evidence for the “assisted demolition” of WTC7 is so overwhelming now that SI - and other skeptic and science publications - are going to have little choice but to start “saving face” re their knee-jerk myopia, and slowly ease themselves into acceptance of the obvious.
You heard it here first…
Peace.

I think Tina Turner said it best in the song ‘thunder dome’ when she sang “we don’t need another hero”.
One of the least admirable exports is the notion that the world can be reduced to the simplistic.
Concisely put many Americans seem to ignore the complexity of human nature and therefore all things human.
i.e. Amy is human and as such is a mixture of good and bad, brilliance and idiocy.
It is intellectual laziness and poor reasoning to pigeon hole every one.
A corollary of this (over) simplification is that people look for simple answers for complex issues….Than includes a hero an organization etc. that is going to fix an issue… a journalist, prez, govt department et al…..in truth it all boils down to *us*. No excuses us, we have to change things.
Clearly then it is plainly absurd to contemplate that ANY site is 100% unbiased is some how vulnerable to misinformation.
As a consequence I’m the examinator I examine every thing but double/triple check important information.
Knowing every thing (facts) is Knowledge but knowing what to believe and how/when to use it is wisdom.

Well, this line of questioning is rhetorical. And, if I or anyone other ‘regular’ person knew the answers, it might
put one in danger of ‘knowing too much.’
Curious examples (9/11 and modern-day Israel), as examples of divine retribution; particularly when the so-
called ‘retribution’ is in the form of ‘terrorism.’ For sure, seriously terroristic horrors abound; but who authors
the terror, who pulls the strings?
We know the Mossad grew out of the Irgun, infamous for its authorship and execution the King David Hotel
bombing, made to look as though done by Palestinians, the success of which is celebrated by Israeli patriots
still; and a tactical approach, many assert, is still an operative one. It’s been said: “Mossad is the Jewish peoples’
worst enemy.”
Here’s a question for you: 60 years from now, who will be celebrating the intelligence ‘success’ of the 9/11
black-op/psy-op?
Not to be provocative, but Hindus (of which there are nearly as many, if not more, than Christians) likely lay all

Blogdog—-In order to clarify I’ll put my questions
Report thisin a different way. Who pulls the strings for the
United Nations Security Council? If they pass a
resolution against the leader of a country for
unproven claims why don’t they pass a resolution
against the leader of a country with proven evidence?
George Bush and his co-horts knew Iraq had nothing
to do with 9/11. Yet they send American troops to
die in Iraq along with killing hundreds of thousands
of innocent lives of senior citizens, women, and
children in Iraq. Why hasn’t the United Nations
Security Council taken action against such blatant
killing by our American leaders? Instead of solving
any problems the action by Pres. Bush and his co-horts only served to worsen relations between America
and Arab nations. Yet the United Nations does nothing about it. Why? Does the money from American multi-national corporations not only control
governemtns throughout the world but also control
decisions made by the United Nations? When I was
very young I visited my extremely poor grandfather
in a coal mining town in Kentucky. One day, I pulled
a rather large beet from grandpa’s garden and said,
“This beet’s too big for it’s britches.” Years later, it appears to me that our American government
and multi-national corporations have grown “too big
for their britches.” Who’s going to do something about it? Obviously, it doesn’t appear to be the
United Nations. Perhaps, it will be God. The Bible
talks about a coming day when God will bring great
wrath upon the earth because leaders of the nations
turned their backs upon poor people. This time is
called “The Day of the Lord.” God told Israel in
Leviticus 26:15,16, “If you despise my laws and
do not keep my commandments I WILL BRING TERROR
UPON YOU.” Israel despised God and failed to keep
the commandments and God brough terror from other
nations upon Israel. The same is true with prideful
America. The terror came on 9/11. Did the leaders
of Ameerica and New York ask the people to keep the
commandments? Absolutely not! The leaders stood up,
pounded their chests, and defiantly bragged about
how tough they were. Well, we are going to see how
tough they are. Don’t mess with God. You will lose!

It’s hard to believe that there are still 9/11 truthers after all the complete debunking that their conspiracy theories have had. democracynow has not given the debunkers enough attention. That’s Amy Goodman’s only problem with 9/11. Why do people persist in believing nonsense? If Amy Goodman is a closet believer it doesn’t say much for her ability to recognize the simple, well documented truth.
The magazine “Skeptical Inquirer” has done some good work on the 9/11 conspiracy theory and on why believing in conspiracy theories has become an America tradition. Some of these articles may be available online.

And although she is a closet “Truther,” she continues to use the excuse that she would quickly lose her job if she came out publicly and professionally as such. Poppycock. She has rarely been one concerned about speaking truth to power. Yet for some reason, 9/11 remains taboo with her.
Unless and until she tackles 9/11 with the same degree of truth-seeking and honesty with which she covers other controversial political topics, she will never be MY Truthdigger of the Week.

Benghazi. The claim in its exact form was that Qaddafi had ordered Libyan

referred to the U.N. Security Council at U.N Headquarters in New York City and

False claims about African mercenary armies in Libya and about jet attacks on
civilians were also used in a broad media campaign against Libya. These two
claims have been sidelined and have become more and more murky. The
massacre claims, however, were used in a legal, diplomatic, and military
framework to justify NATO’s war on the Libyans.
Using Human Rights as a Pretext for War: The LLHR and its Unproven Claims
One of the main sources for the claim that Qaddafi was killing his own people
Report thisis the Libyan League for Human Rights (LLHR). The LLHR was actually pivotal to
getting the U.N. involved through its specific claims in Geneva. On February 21,
2011 the LLHR got the 70 other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to
sent letters to the President Obama, E.U. High Representative Catherine
Ashton., and the U.N. Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon demanding international
action against Libya invoking the “Responsibility to Protect” doctrine. Only 25
members of this coalition actually assert that they are human rights groups.

Not many posts here have much to do with Amy Goodman, do they?
Then there’s the usual right-wing troll whining why people didn’t hold candlelight vigils for Lawrence Brewster, the murderer of James Byrd.
Every one of these right-wing trolls (and the ‘net is full of them) ignores the KEY FACT that there was NO doubt of Brewster’s guilt and there was HUGE doubts about Davis’s guilt!.
There is so much doubt that William Sessions, former FBI director, and Bob Barr, former Republican Congressman, BOTH came out for a new trial, claiming that this was a miscarriage of justice, and abuse of the Law.
But the trolls pretend this isn’t true, it’s just racism because Davis was Black and Brewster was White, just like they pretend that all the OTHER executions of Black men and White men aren’t generally ignored by a public that has become numb.
There is not one democratic state in the world that has more executions than the US. And, of those major DEMOCRATIC nations that have banned the death penalty, only Mexico (which is actually in a civil war) and South Africa have a higher murder rate than the US.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Warren is the FIRST Democrat in years to actually interest me with her brains and her common sense. You could make a campaign slogan out of “Nobody in America got rich on their own. NOBODY!”

I really like and admire Amy Goodman. Democracy Now is one of my very few daily online news sources. She deserves this and any accolade.
Yet the Davis case was overreaching.. In MY Opinion. She and some others (Michael Moore?) became too personally involved. The dialogue veered from the facts on the record to the hopes of the anti death penalty movement.
I’ve written before that I believe the death penalty is unfairly assessed and barbaric. I’ll add now that the way to see it end is to have it assessed against our leaders who wage war under false pretenses. Corporate moguls who poison us or through policies deny proper health care. Banksters who topple our economy..
After the first CEO is put to death for allowing our babies to have lead in their toys.. the first derivatives trader who hedges against all his retiree clients’ accounts and makes a few millions is given lethal injection… the CIA joy-stick jockey that takes out a few kids in a dirt village somewhere across the world is denounced in open court and sent to a firing squad.. THEN .. the death penalty
will lose it’s appeal to American Policy makers!
Until then.. I suggest we stay out of trouble.. or face the death penalty.
Adios.

So you don’t bother to support Democracy Now, but you’re a regular (critical) listener. We DN financial supporters hope that you enjoy the show that you watch for free. And then criticize Amy for not filling her 60 minutes per day with the stories that you think are important.
Your suggestion that I “give it some time thinking about it maturely” was taken to heart.
I think you’ve given up Dungeons and Dragons and taken up Conspiracies and Spooks as the rest of the gang moved on with dating and other activities.
I used the link to go to the “scoop” about WL, and was greatly bemused. It’s one more 100% certain wizard who can see through all the hoopla regarding Bradley Manning et. al., and knows for certain that it’s all part of a conspiracy to make Congress fund programs to heighten security because of these leaks, and everyone is trained in this stuff, and these agencies can’t get funding without such shadow plays, and everyone knows, and then the noose gets tighter and tighter and tighter…
I’ve had enough experience with classified programs to know that that’s a load of crap. I am certain that 75% - 80% of documents classified in this country are done to hide mistakes (involving funding or employee performance) or because it’s easier to classify everything than to read and conscientiously determine the appropriate level (if any) of classification needed, document by document. So, it’s true that there’s too much that’s classified. But, it’s also true that these black agencies get funding without much, if any, oversight by Congress, and then only by members with the appropriate clearance. Big time PR escapades would be a waste of time, in that regard.
Unless I misunderstood the speaker, he is suggesting that Bradley Manning is part of the conspiracy to jail and torture himself. That’s some shameful shit.
Finally, you say you give money to Wayne Madsen, cause he’s got the inside scoop and the real poop about the right stuff. I don’t know Wayne so well, and had to do a quick and dirty search to find out what I’d been missing, with the following edifying results:
Your boy described himself as the “most senior lieutenant in the Navy” at the time of his resignation from the Navy (having been passed over) and blamed his lack of advance on a powerful group of pedophiles hidden in the top of the U.S. Navy ranks.
Interesting.
He’s responsible for breaking the “story” about Obama having been a longtime member of a Chicago gay man’s club, and that, as a result of Madsen’s writing about the still unsolved murder of Obama’s gay lover, Donald Young, he (Madsen) is on Obama’s death list.
Sexy. Very, very sexy.
Madsen is a birther and has declared that intelligence agencies around the world have scrutinized the birth certificate and decided it’s fake because of one word on the document. The word “African” was used to designate the race of Obama’s Kenyan father.
Aha!
Madsen has discovered that the Mossad (Israeli Intelligence) was responsible for the Oslo massacre.
How clever they are.
I’m running out of characters with which to write, so if anyone else reads my drivel and has any more doubt about Madsen and his really, really true facts and stuff, go here, for more:

Your nasty “...when Amy was in London schmoozing up with Julian Assange and his care takers…” establishes your sterling credentials as a naysayer to Julian Assange and the newsworthiness of his detainment in GB awaiting deportation to Sweden for sex crime charges, etc., etc. Know what? Some of us were and are interested in him and the organization.
It’s refreshing to read someone so certain of who is worthy of interview and who isn’t. It must be wonderful to have such insight as to dismiss Wikileaks, its current leader and those who have an interest in same, in a single sentence.
Do you give money to Democracy Now? If not, why don’t you quit criticizing her and DN, until you do. If there’s a show that you prefer, give to it. Nobody, with integrity, rides for free.
Have a happy conspiracy!

OS - take it easy - as a proactive artist with a long career, I’ve been intimately involved with 501(c)3.orgs
for a long, long time - anybody wanting to check up on Democracy Now - have at it:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=11344
making a national daily broadcast at that level requires taking feeds from ‘stringers’ and arranging a lot of
remote interviews - I listen to the DN audio every morning on my local Community Radio Station - they do
the same thing with over a dozen weekly shows
when Amy was in London schmoozing up with Julian Assange and his care takers, Cynthia McKinney, Wayne
Madsen, Lizzie Phelan, Webster Tarpley Walter Fauntroy and Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya, among other non-
MSM journalists and fact finders, were in Libya compiling reports and stringing stories to Voltaire Network,
Global Research, Flash Points and others - DN could have picked up any of those feeds or interviewed any
of them.
Now that Former US Congressman Walter Fauntroy is safely back in the US with a seriously harrowing eye-
witness account - http://www.voltairenet.org/Walter-Fauntroy-Feared-Dead-in - it would seem that an
interview with him would well-serve DN’s audience
don’t expect it - his story is the last thing NATO wants in the news and DN is one of the last places you’ll
Report thishear it - I used to think Amy avoided 3rd-rail topics like 9/11 as an inside job, simply to protect here
touring/publishing career - after their Libya NATO propaganda line, I’m considerably less forgiving.

When you write, “Where is your DN team, as NATO’s bombs terrorize Libya’s civilians…” to what “DN team” do you refer?
Do you know what funding is behind this “team?” It’s a non-commercial, charitably funded organization that has no bureaus in any other city, much less another country.
Have you ever seen their studio or viewed the taping of one of their shows? I have and I know whereof I speak—they are as close to a poverty operation as one can imagine.
If you watch the show regularly you’ll know she covered the Libya fiasco as well as possible given the funding and situation on the ground.
Have you ever donated money to Democracy Now? If so, you know how dependent it is on a steady stream of contributions to simply operate the NY studio and office. If not, go ahead and continue to damn those people who fail to meet your fatuous standards of political purity. It’s fun and costs you nothing.

RE: ...a pathetic attempt to draw attention to themselves…
baloney - Amy got the award, it’s about her - the fearless journalist who faced
the bullets of Suharto’s ethnic cleansers amidst his victims…
and lived to write about it - the question for
Amy is this:
Where is your DN team, as NATO’s bombs terrorize Libya’s civilians and their
mercenary terrorists, amidst the so-called ‘rebels’ on the ground, execute their
own ethnic cleansing? e.g.
Human rights investigations evidence-based,
independent and rigorous investigation of human rights abuses
Libyan rebel ethnic cleansing and lynching of black people
http://humanrightsinvestigations.org/2011/07/07/libya-ethnic-cleansing/
Posted on July 7, 2011 by HRI Mark 55
Further specific evidence has emerged that there is a strong racist element
within the rebel forces, including at command level, and it is the stated
intention of these forces to ethnically cleanse areas they capture of their dark-
skinned inhabitants.
Racism amongst the rebels including at command level.
In a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, journalist Sam Dagher pointed out
the obvious fact that the Libyan war is aggravating ethnic tensions in that
country. The article talks about the fate of Tawergha, a small town 25 miles to
the south of Misrata, inhabited mostly by black Libyans, a legacy of its 19th-
century origins as a transit town in the slave trade:
Ibrahim al-Halbous, a rebel commander leading the fight near Tawergha, says
all remaining residents should leave once if his fighters capture the town.
“They should pack up,” Mr. Halbous said. “Tawergha no longer exists, only
Misrata.”
Other rebel leaders are reported as:
“calling for drastic measures like banning Tawergha natives from ever working,
living or sending their children to schools in Misrata.”

The very same day Troy Davis was executed, a white supremacist was also executed for the racially motivated dragging death of an innocent black man. Nobody held candlelight vigils for him. It’s the fallacy of tying opposition to state-sanctioned murder with the personality of the person being executed. Troy Davis was a useful media personality for the election season to kick off its distracting discussion of wedge issues like Capital Punishment.

Amy is a great selection!
Those who criticize Amy Goodman either don’t watch her and Juan on a daily basis, or they bring an agenda that insists on dismissing everyone, including such people as Noam Chomsky, Ralph Nader, Dennis Kucinich and Amy Goodman, as just another tool of Wall Street/Corporations/the Jews.
Each such “so-called…Liberal/Leftist/Progressive” is a sham, a fake and a phony; s/he is just not-good-enough for those whose only talent is having the ability to pound nonsense onto a keyboard, in a pathetic attempt to draw attention to themselves.
Viva Amy! Viva Democracy Now!

I find it very difficult to believe that we’re praising Amy Goodman for her coverage of Libya, which was entirely biased in favor of the intervention.

Sorry, but Libya exposed Amy and Democracy Now! as the frauds that they are. Always there except when you need them. I guess all that foundation cash comes with some strings attacks, eh Amy? Maybe it would be helpful if Amy would tell us before each story whether she was delivering actual journalism or Ford Foundation propaganda for a left-of-center audience.

DN - 2007: In case you missed it

U.S. General Wesley Clark (Ret.) on US/NATO plans to ‘take out’ 7 countries including Libya - 17.09.2011.
In an interview with Amy Goodman on March 2, 2007, U.S. General Wesley Clark (Ret.), explains that the Bush Administration planned to take out 7 countries: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Iran.
DN showed no interest in bringing that out of its vaults when Obomber unleashed NATO bombers on Libya’s citizens - that excerpt is reposted here - http://globalciviliansforpeace.com/ - where one will find many of the reporters covering the real story of NATO’s rape of Libya - reporters DN studiously avoids.
DN is clearly complicit in the Obomber Regime Left-cover tactic to fail the anti-war movement in the US - this is visible throughout the Left/Lib/Prog. media, e.g. Robert Greenwald’s “Rethink Afghanistan” - indeed, just ‘rethink’ it - bloody hell!

Libya?
What is Libya? People dying, innocent civilians being killed by NATO bombing? Really? I never saw word one about that during the bombing campaign.
Amy Goodman does do good work. However, her work is suspect at times. Libya made that most evident.

I understand that the term “bringing people to justice” now means killing them.
murder is still murder no matter what else you call it.
humanity may have evolved out of the cave, but not very far.

While NATO’s mandate enjoins it to protect civilians, the Alliance allows the
forces of the Libyan National Transition Council to continue their abuses. After
hunting down black Africans, the summary executions now extend to members
of the Qadhadhfa tribe, that of the fallen Leader. Hundreds of thousands of
African workers have already fled the country to escape death; the time has
now come for certain Libyans to take the road to exile if they want to
survive.
