Q & A - Live Chat with Robert Scheer

By Robert Scheer

It was an act of international terrorism, pure and simple. There can be no valid claims of self-defense on the part of Israeli commandos who attacked a ship of protesters in international waters, killing nine civilians and kidnapping more than 600 others—including 15 international reporters who were prevented from filing their stories by a nation that claims to be the beacon of democracy in the Mideast.

Trust me, I do not come to this viewpoint lightly. This is an issue I have written about with anguish ever since I visited Gaza and the West Bank immediately after the Six-Day War 43 years ago, and the fact that those apartheid zones still stand in oppressive isolation from the norms of human rights is a sad commentary on our profession. There is no subject on which American journalists so disgrace themselves by embracing a double standard or about which our politicians are permitted the kind of hypocritical cop-out once again demonstrated by the tepid response of the Obama administration.

If nothing else, this assault on decency by the Israeli government was clearly intended to derail the peace talks that President Barack Obama has encouraged. But instead of calling Israel on its savagery, the U.S. is virtually alone in the world in its embarrassingly mild rebuke. The politicians cave so shamelessly because they know that media will be obsequiously tolerant of such immoral equivocation.

The last time I wrote about Israel and Gaza, the San Francisco Chronicle suddenly decided to stop running my weekly column. No great hardship—I have other outlets—but I would be lying if I denied the apprehension I feel every time I dare write critically about Israel and brace myself for the charge that I am yet another “self-hating Jew.” A charge certain to be leveled against even Hedy Epstein, the 85-year-old Holocaust survivor who at last report was attempting to board yet another aid boat, the Rachel Corrie, named after a heroic American protester who was bulldozed to death by Israelis in 2003.

The first time I encountered that bewildering criticism of Jews who dare to be morally consistent—despite that being our historical obligation—was when I was an editor at Ramparts and nearly bankrupted the magazine in attempting to cover the Six-Day War, during which Israel grabbed control of Gaza and the West Bank. We had assigned the legendary journalist I.F. Stone to write about the war, thinking it a wise choice, given that he had accompanied the first boats of Jewish displaced persons from World War II traveling to found the state of Israel. Back then he celebrated that quest: “These Jews want the right to live as a people, to build as a people, to make their contribution to the world as a people. Are their national aspirations any less worthy of respect than those of any other oppressed people?”

Square, Site wide
But then he wrote after the Six-Day War that he felt compelled to deal also with the oppression of the Palestinians and their desire for a home. His report was balanced and fair, which of course was a problem to some of the Ramparts investors who strongly favored honest journalism on every subject except Israel.

I upset them further by traveling to Egypt and Israel at the end of the Six-Day War and visiting newly occupied Gaza, where I questioned the assertion of top officials, including Moshe Dayan, that they would bring freedom to the Palestinians there that the previous Egyptian and Jordanian occupiers had denied. It never happened, because the intentions of occupiers to improve the lot of the conquered become moot if the occupiers insist on continuing their reign of power. How easy it is to forget that the Palestinians were not the ones who attacked Israel at the time of the Six-Day War. On the contrary, it was their previous overlords, Egypt and Jordan, with which Israel has long since had relatively good relations. An accommodation of occupiers made above the head of the occupied.

There is no such thing as a morally acceptable occupation, and as the oppressed resist they will become more violent in their desperation. In turn the occupiers will show their true colors as oppressors. As the great Israeli writer Amos Oz wrote in Tuesday’s New York Times, “ … Ever since the Six-Day war in 1967, Israel has been fixated on military force.” He excoriates the prevailing Israeli view “that the Palestinian problem can be crushed instead of solved.” That is the essence of the problem and the solution: End the crushing occupation and begin to solve the problem of providing the Palestinians, as well as the Jews, with a viable homeland.

As long as the Israelis continue electing hoodlum-like leaders to run their government, their conflict with the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world will continue unabated. And the world will witness more tragedies as it has witnessed lately a taste of Israel’s crimes at the high sea.

The Palestinians have given all the concessions in the last 62 years, since Israel was created in 1948. They have nothing left to give except RESISTANCE to the brutal occupation of what is left of their lands.

Any hope for the conflict to be resolved peacefully, the solution has to come from within the social and political structure of Israel.

Therefore,to settle the conflict without bloodshed, the Israelis have to find an “Israeli Charles de Gaulle” within their own political and social structure and elect him with enough majority to head a future government.

I see no other way,if humanity cares to avoid or rather prevents Armageddon.

I had looked to the whole Ishmael and Isaac thing years ago, but this time more
from a psychoanalytical viewpoint and what I found was quite interesting.
During the evolution of the Judeo-Christian religions, in their pursuit of a
monotheistic deity, the part that seems to have been left out was that Ismael
was the past and that Isaac was a future direction.

Now I’m a firm believer in that we can’t determine where we are going until we
understand where we came from. Our past, whether it be cultural, family, or
personal is the baggage we carry forward in our trek through the future. It is
like a ship captain who wakes up one day and finds himself plopped in the
middle of the ocean. He has no idea in which direction to travel to find the
nearest land. He has no frame of reference with which to determine his
position. He could decide to head off in one direction only to dash his vessel on
the rocks within half a mile. In setting a course for humanity, we have no map
and we have no bearings. The sky always seems to be clouded and all we have
is ourselves. If we did know from which point we were starting, we could chart
a course in a direction that we thought was safe.

Ismael represented all that was human up to that point in time and Isaac
represented what humanity was capable of. It was a test given to us from God
for a select group of the human population, i.e. not Africans or Asians. What
lessons this group needed to learn about itself is something that will be
discussed for millennia (if we ever make it that far), but what seemed evident
was that Ismael could not exist without Isaac and vice versa. They are two
siblings constantly quarreling with each other and even after enough time has
elapsed for the average person to believe they have matured, what we have in
its place is two dysfunctional adult children, acting out differences that should
have been addressed long ago. Long ago, they should have embraced each
other as each others alter side. It reminds me of that Star Trek episode “Let
That Be Your Last Battlefield”, where Lokai and Bele carried so much hatred for
each other, they were blinded to how much they had in common.

Judaism is headed nowhere without Islam ....... and Islam is headed nowhere
without Judaism. It would be like committing spiritual suicide.

“I have the nagging suspicion that many of the vile hateful writings against the
Jews in this thread are initiated by closeted zionists ......”

Not so, here. And while I don’t quite agree with Ben that “all” the Jews are the
cause of the problem, those of them that are have used their ethnicity to
parasitize other ethnicities, as Ben Franklin had inferred. It’s just like the
blacks. There are many good, warm, patriotic and sensible blacks ..... and then
there is that bunch in the cities that, out of their own attempt for cultural
preservation, would continue to intimidate any outsiders. And they are willing
to kill to do so, even though they also seek many of the same prizes as their
victims.

Picking on any race as a whole certainly isn’t right, but can you imagine any
one ethnic group that has more negatively influenced the course of history?
Maybe Britain or Spain, but the Jews have been at it for thousands of years.
They ignore the assimilation tendencies that other people have had to
embrace, some say to preserve their culture. But where has it gotten us, and
the world?  They’ve just become damn good at coveting and stealing and if any
one factor has brought us close to the brink of human extinction, it is the Jew.

However they’ve managed to do it over those thousands of years, they have
managed to turn an evolution of spiritual pursuit into a killing machine and it
can no longer qualify as a civilized religion or state. The Amalekites were in
Canaan before Abraham ever arrived there; Abraham having arrived from
Chaldea. So, by Hebrew standards it’s OK to just covet something and take it,
and according to Hebrew texts, smite both woman and child. Great bunch.
maybe we should invite them all over for dinner.

Well, if that’s the new game plan, what’s to stop me from dropping a few WMDs
in downtown Tel Aviv and claiming that turf as mine? Hey it worked for Saul
and David.  I’m reminded of what happened when Nebuchadnezzar II tossed
them out almost 2700 years ago, not all of them mind you; just the ones that
refused to comply. And as much as the Jews would have everyone believe this
was a mass exodus of just Jews, what they seem to conveniently avoid
discussing is that a large number of non-Jews had been expelled as well
because they, too, refused to comply. So, it is interesting how spin was
invented way back then, getting everyone to believe that it was a religious
persecution issue, while it was all along an economic and assimilation issue.
They’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of that, but it’s getting old.

I have the nagging suspicion that many of the vile hateful writings against the Jews in this thread are initiated by closeted zionists to drum up support and sympathy for Israel and zionism, especially amongst the Jews who oppose Zionism or undecided about it.
Several years ago there were several anti-semitic incidents in France and Italy, and it turned out many of these incidents were done by Zionists or falsely claimed by Zionists.
I am not denying that there exist anti-semitic feelings harboured by some individuals, but the anti-Jewish writing here are so vile and hateful that no “gentile” dare to write it in this day and age.

ELIMINATE THE SHADOW: I THINK THAT THE ROCK BAND TOOL TALKS ABOUT THE SHADOW IN THE SONG 46 AND 2

http://www.brianwillson.com/the-shadow-2/

Examine the shadow, and heal from it, or in the alternative, continue projecting the shadow outward until all life is eliminated

A SOCIETY OF FEAR AND SHAME

One thing I learned fairly quickly in my post-Vietnam quest for truth is the manner in which the U.S. civilization was founded and how it has sustained itself. Considered an “exceptional” civilization, this image has been conveyed so successfully from generation after generation that I thanked God in my nightly prayers in the 1940s and 1950s for having been blessed with birth in “America.”

The United States civilization, including the European ancestors who created its basic ideas, values and forms, was born in arrogance and a racism that manifested in behavior nothing short of barbarism and terrorism. It was expressed brutally at gunpoint against the Hemisphere’s original Indigenous inhabitants, enabling early settlers to obtain virtually “free” land upon which to live and work. Multiple millions were killed. Then “free” labor was acquired at gunpoint through participation in the African slave trade. Again, multiple millions were killed. Holocaust number three took place from the late 1890s to the present, what some call “The American Century.” During this period the United States, through over 300 overt military actions and an estimated 10,000 covert interventions, acquired its expanding resource base at gunpoint from “Third World” countries, killing and maiming dozens of millions, assuring impoverishment of billions. This helps explain “American” exceptionalism. It has murdered, pillaged, and plundered its way to having what is claimed the highest standard of living in the world. After all, “there is no way like the American Way.”

It is not that other nations and their developing empires have not behaved similarly. After all, this basically Western, exploitive model can be traced back to the earliest of the urban civilizations at the end of the Neolithic period some 5,500 years ago. It has consistently prevailed, with some notable exceptions at certain periods of times in certain locales, with its male dominator model, using hierarchical and bureaucratic regimes to control the labor of large numbers of workers, either as chattel or wage slaves, with violence always being the ultimate enforcement technique. However, the United States has surpassed all previous imperial civilizations in the amount of violence, devastation of cultures, and in the global territory controlled.

However, the leaders and many of the inhabitants of the United States still consider that they live in an “exceptional” society. Unfortunately, our society is deeply rooted in the use of terror to get its way. That is the American Way. Over the last several decades, a number of individuals, organizations, and written reports have increasingly exposed this fraudulent, make-believe version of exceptionalism, such that larger numbers of U.S. citizens either know of the lie, or are having to work much harder to remain in denial about it. Indeed, facing the truth–a huge shadow that hangs over us like a dark thundercloud–takes a bit of courage, maybe even an epiphany here and there. The fantasy that Bush II is masterfully attempting to carry out–the final stage in which the Western civilization model is carried to every nook and cranny on the globe–if successful, will likely provoke the cataclysmic collapse of life as we have known it for thousands of years.

Amen Ben!Just as Ben Franklin warned, the Jew has pervaded all of our most sacred institutions:finance, education, politics, the arts(among many others.)

The Jew is ubiquitous in America.Americas sons and daughters are being slaughtered in Iraq to fight Israels enemies. A single Jew controls Americas entire economy(Ben Bernarke),Jews control many key positions in the federal government, and most importantly, the Jew dominates the MEDIA!

This media monopoly has allowed the Jew to impose a veritable mind control on the American people. With unprecedented success the Jewish media tells the American what they can and cannot think.

Ben Franklin was right. After 200 years the Jew and his corrupted stooges have ruined this country.America and Her people have become the SLAVE of the Jew and international Jewry!Wake up America!Benjamin Franklin is speaking to us still!

_israel_of_intentionally_killing_peace_activists_to_deter_future_flotillas/?page=2

I am beginning to think that the attack on the Flotilla did exactly what it was intended to.

To bring in a quote here: Theodor Herzl (1860-1904), the founder of modern Zionism, recognized that anti-Semitism would further his cause, the creation of a separate state for Jews. To solve the Jewish Question, he maintained “we must, above all, make it an international political issue.”

Herzl wrote that Zionism offered the world a welcome “final solution of the Jewish question.” In his “Diaries”, page 19, Herzl stated “Anti-Semites will become our surest friends, anti-Semitic countries our allies.”

http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com/antisemitism/...
(it goes on from there)

If one reads pre-WWII Zionist literature, before this movement became a state-backed force, and thus did not have to couch its rhetoric as much, it is obvious that anti-Semitism was very encouraged by the Zionist movement, as it helped further their aims. (More on this enlightening character here:

http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com/zionism/herzl... )

As their aim is to force g-d’s hand to end the exile (something that had been condemned by all religious Jewish leaders prior to WWII and many even after that) and to bring all Jews to Israel, to suggest that they intentionally act to increase anti-Semitism throughout the world by their state’s action is doing nothing more than to suggest that they continue the
same tactics they have historically used.

http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com/resources/onl...

In this book it details how repeated attempts to save the victims of the holocaust were made, but thwarted by the Zionist organizations as they did not involve moving the Jewish people in question to Palestine (which would have been illegal under the white paper of 1939, which negate the Balfour Declaration.

The reasoning used by the Zionist in regard to the Holocaust at the time was to the effect that “one goat in Palestine is more important than all the Jews in Europe.

At one point a group of elders, women and children was blocked from even being sent to Palestine as they would not help the goal of a violent takeover of Palestine as they were not capable of fighting, the Zionists only wanted healthy men of fighting age.

The Rothschild’s provided most of Hitler’s financial backing When one looks into the Zionist history and mindset, It starts making more in more sense when one looks at how this group of secular Jews acts, and explains most of, if not all of, the behaviour.

Zionism, from the outset, has fostered Anti-Semitism as a way to make Jews feel threatened in the world, forcing them to move to Palestine.

To make this an even sadder situation, according to the three oaths of Judaism, which are adhered to by at least Orthodox Jews, to partake in a secular “Jewish” state brought about by force rather coming about after the advent of the messiah as shown by the redemption of all Jewish people, to live in such a state is a violation of a compact with G-d. To support such a state, according to traditional Jewish faith, is to completely give up on G-d.

I am not certain that the Zionists are consciously intending to promote anti-Semitism, but the more I look at the history and the current actions they partake in, I am unable to find any other way of understanding their history and current actions that makes even the slightest amount of sense. And looked at this way, the history and actions of the State of
Israel (controlled by Zionists) make PERFECT sense.

Can anyone please give me a suggestion that is less horrible to contemplate that explains the actions we see the state of Israel undertaking on a regular basis?

“America’s fate was sealed when the public and the anti-war movement bought the government’s 9/11 conspiracy theory. The government’s account of 9/11 is contradicted by much evidence. Nevertheless, this defining event of our time, which has launched the US on interminable wars of aggression and a domestic police state, is a taboo topic for investigation in the media. It is pointless to complain of war and a police state when one accepts the premise upon which they are based.”  -Dr. Paul Craig Roberts

The Israeli Spin-Machine in Overdrive

Dershowitz to the Rescue?

By JAMES ABOUREZK

“Armed Israeli commandos, the elite of the elites, rappelled to the deck of a Turkish ship carrying humanitarian relief supplies to the 1.5 million prisoners in the Gaza concentration camp.

Although the Israelis did not see the attack as an attack, but an action only to defend themselves, as only Israelis have a right to do. It is a right that Palestinians do not have, nor do the other activists who were attempting to deliver the supplies to the Gazans. It appears, from the scanty non-Israeli news available, that the Turkish ship was some 40 miles or more off the coast of Gaza, and that the activists aboard were not armed, except with kitchen knives and some clubs lying around the ship that they could round up when they were surprised by the Israeli commandos.

In the melee that followed, nine activists were dead—mostly Turkish—and several were wounded. Reports tell us that several of the brave elite commandos were also injured, one of them with gunfire from a gun an activist took away from one of the commandos. The Israeli propaganda spin machine was ready in an instant to spin the news their way about the incident. They were said to be, of course, entitled to defend themselves, a mantra chanted over and over again by the Israeli talking heads we’ve seen on American television. Listening to these commentators’ paeans to Israel’s conduct, It’s very much like listening to a bully who, after punching someone smaller in the jaw, requires the victim to apologize for getting his face in the way of the bully’s fist.

Even more thrilling were the American television commentators becoming instant pro- Israeli dittoheads, the very same characters they laughingly bring up when discussing Rush Limbaugh. One of the first stories attributed to the Israeli propaganda machine was that the commandos were armed only with paint guns—you know, the kind of weapons red-blooded American middle-aged men use to shoot at each other on weekends here in America. We all know how harmless they are. Somehow the Israeli government was unable to stop a couple of reports which told of the commandos whining that they were set upon by these radical terrorists with metal clubs and knives.

President Obama took a strong stand against violence. He did not actually say, “why can’t we all just get along?” But when he expressed his regrets over the loss of life, a whiff of Rodney King’s famous words blew over the airwaves.

What is desperately needed now is legal advice from Alan Dershowitz , perhaps America’s top Israel apologist. If you remember, Dershowit was the legal expert who once wrote in the New York Times that, not to worry, the Israeli Supreme Court was always there to protect the rights of the Palestinians living under occupation. We are certain that the Israeli Supreme Court is sincere in its efforts to protect the rights of the Palestinians living under the illegal occupation, but it’s obvious that no one has told the Court about the Palestinian home demolitions, the Palestinian olive trees uprooted by Israeli settlers, and the multiple beatings visited on Palestinians who tend to object to being treated like subhumans.”

But anyone in American politics who evinced such passion in opposition to

“Racism is racism.  There are good and bad people in every color and every
nation.”
====================

I very much agree, although I wonder how much people are truly offended by
someone’s actual race. I would think that, when ethnicities are forced to mix,
that some of them lose sight of the fact they are are in a melting pot and use
that as an excuse to further isolate themselves. That may be from a fear of
losing their culture through assimilation or just outright xenophobia, but either
way, the fears are projections about their own survival and have little to do with
the actual ethnicity.

As for Israel, we aren’t talking about some back woods tribe here. We are
talking about a group that perceives itself more and more as being a part of the
global community and yet it goes and blatantly violates the very rules everyone
else has to abide by. Israel can’t have its cake and eat it too. This hogwash
about Admiralty Law in international waters is just that, and Israel is just using
that as an excuse to choke the living sh*t out of a population that it thinks is
vagabonding on its land. Israel is getting even with anyone it can for having
been virtually abandoned by the world during WWII. It doesn’t care who suffers,
but someone is going to pay and right now Palestine is the weak kid in the
schoolyard. If they had tried that crap with Russia, or even France or Germany,
they would have been blown off the face of the map, and as before, no one
would have batted an eyelash.

The actions of Israel are more like that of a starving dog snarling and growling
over the last few discarded bones. Israel, or better yet its government, is
inhabited with a gaggle of sociopathic misanthropes that had long ago lost the
ability to, as they say, “play well”. The world is getting too small for that
immature behavior.

As long as Israel continues to want to be isolated, then its wishes will come
true, and at its present rate all that will be left is a huge crater where an angry
population used to be.

All day I’ve been thinking about the ambiguous title of Robert Scheer’s article.  Here’s my opinion—partly based on facts and experience, partly based on intuition. Take it or leave it.
The Jewish people are a deepy injured community, for centuries driven from place to place, forced to adapt to various locations and learn to survive under prejudice and discrimination.  In the long process they have contributed more than their fair share of artists, musicians, scientists, writers, humanitarians of whom they are justly proud.  Along the way they have also earned a reputation for making money, and at times have been criticized for unjust lending policies.  They have also shared as individuals in the usual sins of human beings in general.
Hitler’s holocaust, perhaps the worst deliberate, brutal persecution in modern times, left its indelible mark of suffering, rationalizations and resentments. By now, a great many Jews have come to expect injustice and fear loss of life, limb or property at the hands of people who appear in any way threatening.
This has probably caused much of the over-reaction we see in Israeli governmental policies and behavior, and the recent emergence of intransigent cruelty concerning the Palestinians and others whom they assume to be their enemies on the basis of the violence of a minority of Palestinians.
Not that other places in the world are in the least bit superior, or less marred by violence and prejudice.  No.  But Israel, in its destructive impulses of self and others, gives us a clear example of the direction in which the human race is headed if we cannot learn to get along peaceably, understand our differences and live and let live with at least a minimum of mutual safety and comfort.
Israel indicates by its behavior that it is on the edge of national suicide.  It is doing things that create more problems for themselves as well as for others.  It seems not to want any longer to be “part of the solution.”
We are faced with an acute new situation, and forced to think of ways to help Israel, and Jews worldwide, in coping with their unique history in order to leave it in the dust of the past and move toward a better tomorrow.
If we can learn to treat nations more like people, each with unique histories that have marked them in both good ways and bad—if we can encourage change rather than try to demand and enforce it, and provide the mood of good will that creates a sense of safety which allows for chanage.  In this way perhaps there is hope of saving not only Israel (and the Palestinians now the focus of Israel’s anger) but ourselves and others as well.
Your thoughts?  (And please don’t tell me I am “making excuses,” because then I know you have not only misunderstood me, but I have failed to express clearly these seldom articulated thoughts and perhaps made things worse.)

Turkish Sources Israeli Advance Target Assassination List Found on Flotilla 1 18 150x121 Picture of the assassination list lost in the fray by an Israeli soldier Redacted News Turkish sources and media revealed a document which shows that a death list had been prepared in advance by the Israelis, showing names and pictures of people on board of the ships to be murdered, who, according to Israel, were “involved in the International humanitarian aid for Gaza”. According to the Turkish sources, hundreds of Israeli soldiers stormed the blue Turkish ship “Marmara” flotilla and they had copies of the death list. The list included the names of civilians on the fleet who should be killed”. The document was apparently recovered after one of the Israeli soldiers lost it during the piracy act.

A red flag was put on me well before I had any radical
political persuations.

I involved an illegally lifted security clearance and
removal from communications.  The government forever had
to justify this.  They held all evidence from me to
prove my innocence for 36 years, then said said to late,
sorry charlie, after all the damage was done.

It all started because I was the only one that knew what
crypto schemes we were suppossed to be using once we
crossed into the seventh fleet.  I was sleeping at the
time because I had just stood a 20 hr watch.  They dropped
communications for four hours in the middle of the Pacific
I was woke up and found the Ops off, Comm off RMC,
and all the other involved standing around with their
thumbs stuck you know where not knowing how to restore
the fleet broadcast…....This unleashed a chain of events
that would later lead to a five month total sleep
depravation (recorded) in Viet Nam ...

Really all I get from this is that, what I have found about all the
‘organized’ religions throughout history, is that NONE of them
are to be trusted and it is easy to see why when anyone one of
them keep spouting off about how a ‘god’ supports their idea of
him and continually blesses each of those religions….IN THEIR
OWN MINDS!
**********************************
“In the beginning Man created God; and in the image of Man
created he, him.

And Man gave unto God a multitude of names, that he might be
Lord over all the earth when it was suited to Man.

And on the seven millionth day Man rested and did lean heavily
on his God and saw that it was good.

And Man formed Aqualung of the dust of the ground, and a host
of others likened unto his kind.

And these lesser men Man did cast into the void. And some
were burned; and some were put apart from their kind.

And Man became the God that he had created and with his
miracles did rule over all the earth.

But as these things did come to pass, the Spirit that did cause
Man to create his God lived on within all Men; even within
Aqualung.

An Man saw it not.

But for Christ’s sake he’d better start looking.”

J.T.
**********************************
Their wise ones said ‘we might have their religion’,
but when we tried to understand it we found that
that there were too many kinds of religions among
white men for us to understand, and that scarcely
any two white men agreed which one was the right
one to learn. This bothered us a good deal until we
saw that the white man did not take his religion any
more seriously than he did his laws, and that he
kept both of them just behind him, like helpers, to
use when they might do him good in his dealings
with strangers.
These are not our ways. We kept the laws we
made and lived our religion. We have never been able to
understand the white man, who fools nobody
but himself.

The fact is that in America, not just politicians but also journalists, academics, and
virtually anybody else with any sort of important or influential job can lose that
job, be shut out of promotions, or otherwise suffer personal consequences for
voicing more than the mildest, most ineffectual criticism of Israel or US support
for Israel.

The most that a “mainstream liberal” - especially if not Jewish - can get away
with, without being ostracized and placed under immediate suspicion of anti-
Semitism, is to shake one’s head and vaguely deplore the “situation”.

This is a fact of American professional life, and it rests on something that no one
dares talk about: Jewish power. That power comes down to tremendously
disproportionate wealth and a tremendously disproportionate prominence in the
most powerful professions, including law, medicine, finance, journalism,
academia, arts and entertainment, etc.

I’m perfectly willing to concede that the disproportionate power of this group may
be due entirely to merit, with no nepotism or ethnic discrimination on their part.

Because you see, how that power arises makes no difference to the political
outcome, with respect to US foreign policy. Merited or not, this power is very real,
and it’s the reason that most American liberals, who in their hearts deplore what
Israel is doing - as liberals deplore all injustice - are scared to death to confront
the Israel lobby. Why ruin your life?

It would seem self-evident that the fact that Israel was a piece of land taken out of Palestinian/Arab tribal territory and “given” to the Jews as a “homeland” as a “compensation” for the Holocaust plus previous widespread century-long anti-Semitism—all decided by Britain, US and France after “winning” a war against the Arabs—all that would be enough to make clear to anyone the source of the horrendous problems in the Middle East.
But no.  The US—and a large part of the world -prefers to ignore history and callously support the resulting injustice while the “Jewish homeland” that came into being proceeds to self-destruct, taking as many neighbors as possible with it.
A grave lesson on trying to dictate solutions by force of arms. Nations turn out to be dunces in the School of International Relations.  Somebody has to step up and save them from themselves.
Hopefully, that somebody will not be yet another

So let’s get this straight.

A foreign power attacks a U.S flagged ship (Challenger)in International Waters.
The Ship is boarded and the crew/passengers, including Americans are kidnapped and taken to a foreign country.
Their possessions are stolen and they are jailed and interrogated.

The U.S. Secretary of State sides with the aggressors.

Now switch Iran for Israel in any description of these events and tell me how likely this looks.

You might also consider the State department’s position in reference to the Constitutional definition of treason:
It is defined as levying war against the United States, adhering to their enemies, or giving their enemies aid and comfort.

Kalpal, why on earth do you think that the vessel has to defend itself.

If masked intruders jumped aboard your ship while you were out sailing, or if
masked intruders entered your home with guns and blasts, certainly you would
respond to their unexpected, invasive acts.  Wouldn’t you?  Add it that, that if you
flew a white flag you would expect those same intruders to desist from firing
bullets at you.  There is no defense whatsoever for Israel’s acts of violence upon
that vessel.  Those lawfully on board had every right to try to protect themselves
from armed intruders.

Very well said Mr. Scheer.  I add, that because of your treatment at the SFO

We felt it was a suppression of information and analysis by a thoughtful

it on the classroom board for my younger law student classmates.  I thought
they needed to know more about legal issues than just torts and contracts.

This recent attack by Israel and their methodical follow up - prohibiting
reporters/media to send information about the event, and killing people on a
private vessel not intended to attack Israel speaks volumes to the world.  Our
current sitting president is an embarrassment.  It is difficult to fathom that he is
so filled with fear of losing the Jewish support in terms of votes and funding,

They also have far too much representation within the US vitamin supplement
industry and out of about half a dozen of the top labels that I can recall at the
moment, the one that scares me the most is Jarrow Rogovin of Jarrow
Formulas.

While this discussion’s contributor, Bruce Baron, sounds like a truly warm and
intelligent individual (I’m assuming from his dialogue that he is Jewish), the flip
side is with hard core raving Zionist lunatics like Rogovin.  The company has
made some nice products in the past, but I wouldn’t trust this lunatic for one
minute. Rogovin “blasted” a woman who had written him regarding his display
the Israeli flag on the Jarrow website.
See: http://www.honestmediatoday.com/woman_complains_about_zionist.htm

Rogovin starts off his response to the woman named Trish as follows, “Madam,
You are a pure bred idiot!” It’s worth reading the article because, in it, even
Rogovin admits to the large number of Jewish owned supplement companies
that exist in the US. This bothers me, particularly if so many potentially aligned
supporters of Zionism happen to also be able to manipulate aspects of our
food supply. According to Rogovin, himself, many of the other supplement
manufacturers share his sentiments. It’s bad enough that Monsanto has all but
destroyed, or allowed to be destroyed, the soil profile in this country, through
its near totally negligent push for the use of of pesticides, but as people have
been then forced to find alternatives to that, I seriously doubt that the public is
aware of the potential time bomb here, should US/Israeli relations come into
question.

BTW, Bruce, your welcome to sit by my fire anytime.

I would maintain that no nation has a “Right” to
exist. Further, I would maintain that The Jewish
State is illegitimate from its beginnings.  Further
still, if it ever had any claim for legitimacy, it
has shown through its behavior over the entire course
of its decades-long Western imposition on the Arab
World that it does not adhere to the responsibilities
of a State, just as its patrons do not. Further, the
West’s imposition and support of this bastard State
in the middle of the Arab World, instead of in their
own (Germany comes to mind), highlights the enormous
and un-ending fraud committed.  A fiction imposed by
force has no good ends, and the Arab and the rest of
the world (the majority) know that it is a tool of
the West, to ensure the West’s domination and
extraction of their resources and anything that’s not
nailed down.  They know it’s a Western colony, a
military outpost, and an enemy of the people, as it’s
always been.  The rich North versus the resource-rich
but people-poor South.  As Michael Parenti points
out, Western countries do not go to poor countries to
make money.  The countries are rich, it is the people
that are poor, and they are kept poor, and they know
it.

What do Jews and Israel have on everyone for you to be so apprehensive??  You being a Jew yourself, that clearly indicates to me who is pulling the purse strings in media.

What do they have on the rest of us that they can massacre innocent people and NO ONE…I mean NO ONE punishes them??

That is it that they have on others that no one in the UN dares do anything to Israel…even though it has probably the most UN violations against it of any country.

Is it that the most powerful White House staff are Jews?

Is it that they run the Fed?  They run Wall Street?  They run the fashion industry?  They run the media (as you are clearly implying).

I ask this question sincerely.  I just want to know what are people so afraid of that they are paralyzed when it comes to doing anything at all towards this country?

If the majority of American journalists had the courage of Robert Scheer, my guess is that Israelis and Palestinians would both be living in better worlds today.  Oppression fills the vacuum of silence.  My grandmother taught me that being a Jew meant I had an obligation to speak out for the oppressed and to speak out for justice - regardless of the cost. My grandmother, a survivor of three pogroms, would tell me that Scheer was a true Mensch.  Thanks Nanny.  Thank you Robert Scheer.

There is nothing any more shameless than the US always back Israel regradless of what atrocity it does. The irony is, the US believes with this politic, they can gain peace in the middle east.

I cannot think of anything much more delusional. And, in fact what would be the consequence of speaking frankly of Isreali bullying. The only thing I believe would be perhaps the beginning of the Arabs to think the US was serious about peace.

Will it ever happen? Of course not and the reasons are not the terror groups, rather Israel herself and the blind support the US gives her as she is truly the 51st state.

warranted and thus cast the first stone. Feather ruffling is one thing but Israel is

Leaving aside this act of nation/state piracy on the high seas, we should not lose sight of the crime that is the blockade itself.

As noted in the UN Goldstone report in the aftermath of the December 2008/Jan. 2009 Israel assault on Gaza which killed between 1,387 and 1,417 Palestinians,

“Despite Israel’s declared intention to relinquish its position as an occupying Power by evacuating troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip during its 2005 “disengagement”, the international community continues to regard it as the occupying Power

“Israel controls the border crossings (including to a significant degree the Rafah crossing to Egypt, under the terms of the Agreement on Movement and Access) and decides what and who gets in or out of the Gaza Strip. It also controls the territorial sea adjacent to the Gaza Strip and has declared a virtual blockade and limits to the fishing zone, thereby regulating economic activity in that zone. It also keeps complete control of the airspace of the Gaza Strip, inter alia, through continuous surveillance by aircraft and unmanned aviation vehicles (UAVs) or drones…

“Israel regulates the local monetary market based on the Israeli currency (the new sheqel) and controls taxes and custom duties…”

http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-files/Guardian/documents/2009/09/15/UNFFMGCReport.pdf

While I would not argue that there are many Israelis who desire a “Final Solution,” the severe restrictions on access to basic necessities have produced an horrific circumstance for the suffering and trapped citizens of Gaza which is reminiscent to the status of Jews in the early stages of the Warsaw Ghetto under Nazi rule.

Israel’s blockade is a form of collective punishment because the people of Gaza made what Israel considered an unacceptable democratic choice when they elected Hamas over Fatah.

That the U.S. has been complicit and supportive of this form of collective punishment is nothing less than shameful.

The other side of the story starts to emerge:

Iara Lee, a Brazilian filmmaker traveling on the ship, claimed Israeli troops opened fire without provocation before boarding. “Their first tactic was to cut all of our satellite communications and then they attacked,” she told Brazil’s TV Globo from an Israeli prison where some 600 activists were being held before being deported. “All I witnessed first hand was the shooting. They came on board and started shooting at people.”

Nazareth, Israel // An Arab member of the Israeli parliament who was on board the international flotilla that was attacked on Monday as it tried to take humanitarian aid to Gaza accused Israel yesterday of intending to kill peace activists as a way to deter future convoys.

Haneen Zoubi said Israeli naval vessels had surrounded the flotilla’s flagship, the Mavi Marmara, and fired on it a few minutes before commandos abseiled from a helicopter directly above them.

Terrified passengers had been forced off the deck when water was sprayed at them. She said she was not aware of any provocation or resistance by the passengers, who were all unarmed.

She added that within minutes of the raid beginning, three bodies had been brought to the main room on the upper deck in which she and most other passengers were confined. Two had gunshot wounds to the head, in what she suggested had been executions.

Two other passengers slowly bled to death in the room after Israeli soldiers ignored messages in Hebrew she had held up at the window calling for medical help to save them. She said she saw seven other passengers seriously wounded.

Arriving at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport with her one-year-old baby, Turkish activist Nilufer Cetin said Israeli troops opened fire before boarding the Turkish-flagged ferry Mavi Marmara, which was the scene of the worst clashes and all the fatalities….
....Kutlu Tiryaki was a captain of another vessel in the flotilla. “We continuously told them we did not have weapons, we came here to bring humanitarian help and not to fight,” he said.

“The attack on the Mavi Marmara came in an instant: they attacked it with 12 or 13 attack boats and also with commandos from helicopters. We heard the gunshots over our portable radio handsets, which we used to communicate with the Mavi Marmara….
...Michalis Grigoropoulos, who was at the wheel of the Free Mediterranean, said: “We were in international waters. The Israelis acted like pirates, completely out of the normal way that they conduct nautical exercises, and seized our ship. They took us hostage, pointing guns at our heads; they descended from helicopters and fired tear gas and bullets. There was absolutely nothing we could do … Those who tried to resist forming a human ring on the bridge were given electric shocks.”

Perhaps if the humanitarians on board the flotilla had been treated as were a group of 1947 Jewish blockade runners, the outcome would not have inspired outrage.
Perhaps if the humanitarians on board had reacted with the same violence as the Jewish blockade runners, there would have been greater carnage:

Here is Captain of HM cruiser Ajax, Brian de Courcy-Ireland’s account of his interception and boarding of the President Warfield.

“The boarding parties (from the destroyers) soon learned what they were up against. Those that got over were assaulted from all angles; Steam jets were turned on them; the side decks were coated with fuel oil to make them slippery; smoke bombs, fireworks and a variety of missiles were hurled at them and tear gas canisters were thrown at them… …the ‘battle’ continued for almost three hours… …A total of about four dozen boarders got across and one party led by Soames had fought their way to bridge, only to discover the ship was being controlled and steered from some secret position. He was more or less besieged in the wheelhouse… …the refugees had been controlling the ship from a sort of armoured citadel below the boat deck aft…”

Eventually the President Warfield surrendered. The total death toll for this three hour long pitched battle? Three killed. One wonders at the forbearance and awesome discipline of the RN sailors involved. One wonders how the 4500 people on board would have fared if they had offered the same level of determined and organised resistance to the Israeli Navy in 2010.
http://nominister.blogspot.com/

Perhaps folk might be more familiar with the name the President Warfield became better known as:

                Exodus.

Intelligent discussion seems at best difficult, at worst impossible.

I, for one, cannot defend Israel’s actions. Period. The ship was an unarmed vessel, in international waters. Period.  Boarding it by force without an international sanction is piracy.  The boarded fought back and were killed.  It is piracy, even more violent than the Somalians.

All they had to do was wait till the ship was in Israel’s territorial waters and the whole situation is changed.  But they wanted a night-time attack in darkness.

Sometimes I think Darth Chaney and Rummy Rumsfeld are running Israel’s military.

Turkey was a good, close ally of Israel.  Now these bumbling thugs have alienated their one REAL friend in the Moslem world.

Scheer’s posted one of his best articles in a long time.  His logic is impeccable.

Israel has the right to secure its borders.  (Come to
think of it, so does the USA.  Most of the people
posting here probably believe that is also anathema.)
The Israelis say that two of the “peace activists”
seized weapons and fired scatter shot all over.
Pictures show them getting beaten up and arnmed with
paint guns, etc.

If the “Peace Activists” were interested in peace,
why not take the Egyptians up on their offer?  Why
not stop when ordered by Israeli warships?  Why push
for confrontation?

The Israeli’s pictures show the “peace activists”
beating the hell out of the Israelis with iron rods,
and trying to kill them.

In the Arab world, does “peace” mean “the war is over
because I slaughtered my enemies, and like the
“Prophet” can now take his wives as my slaves and
enjoy them.”

You call the Israelis barbaric?  Not too many cases
of honor killing, FGM, flogging rape victims, etc.
among Israeli Jews is there?  Saudi Arabia finally
outlawed slavery in 1964 so it could join the UN.
They still don’t let women drive.  Not many
cartoonists have been killed in Israel for say,
drawing cartoons of Moses.

Say whatever you want—this thread is virulently
anti-Semitic.  But if Judaism is racism masquerading
as a religion, then Islam is merely a political
ideology of domination and hatred and barbarism
masquerading as a religion.

I feel no compassion for the Palestinians who have
been bombing, shooting, and rocketing Israeli
civilians for decades. IHH sounds like the Arab
equivalent of ACORN.  I’m not Jewish, but I
recognize propaganda when I see it.  Goebbels would
be proud of IHH.  But you know, its easy to fool
those who want to be fooled—and you guys are it.

they killed 9 people and injured dozens in international waters? It’s obviously not

One thing the Jews excel at is insults and when one of them dares criticize Israel, all manner of insults are hurled that person’s way. Then said person is ostracized, financially boycotted. I appreciate your courage in speaking out Mr. Sheer. May your website survive the boycott. I told you that black-out last week was probably the Israeli lobby. We’ll support you. With little evidence it’s amazing, and revolting, how many bigots presume to have it ALLLLL figured out. Indeed, what evidence there actually is shows that these “peace protesters” had absolutely no intention of peaceful protest but deliberately baited Israel.
