Too Much Fox-Flavored Kool-Aid for Juan WilliamsPosted on Oct 21, 2010
Juan Williams is living evidence that watching too much Fox News will rot your brain. Williams has been a voice of reason in what is otherwise a virtual tsunami of rhetorical nonsense. Williams has often held the center on Fox in discussions revolving around race, religion and culture generally. That is why his capitulation to his host (and boss), Bill O’Reilly, was so sad. Williams stated on “The O’Reilly Factor” on Monday night, “Political correctness can lead to some kind of paralysis where you don’t address reality ... but when I get on a plane and if I see people who are in Muslim garb, and I think they’re identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried, I get nervous.” He then quoted a statement by the Times Square bomber, Faisal Shahzad, that the “war with Muslims is just beginning” and gave that remark the status of “facts” while ignoring the real fact that Shahzad, himself, looked like an average middle class American, dressed in “American garb,” when he lit the fuse on his SUV in the middle of Times Square. Williams seems to make some point about religious garb being a sign of fanaticism rather that what it is, a sign of obedience and consistency in one’s faith. Whether it’s the Christian who wears the cross or crucifix, or the Jew who wears a yarmulke or the Muslim who wears a taqiyah, each, contrary to Williams’ interpretation, is first and foremost showing respect to his faith and piety to a secular world around him. If Williams actually believes what he said, he should be one nervous cat. His reference to the peculiar vulnerability of an airplane also fails to be compelling because it is commonly known that since 9/11, al-Qaida and other terrorist groups have consistently used non-Arab looking personnel to commit their heinous deeds. Remember the shoe bomber, Richard Reid (Afro-Anglo descent)? Remember the underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, from Nigeria? Most of the 9/11 bombers themselves had shaven off their beards to avoid notice. I just don’t understand Williams’ “facts” or logic. Advertisement Unfortunately, I have been uncomfortable with what others have thought of me when I get on an airplane. Thirty years ago, dressed in my finest preacher-go-to-meetin’ three-piece black suit, I was asked by a white passenger to pour him a glass of white wine. Five years ago, flying on a Sunday in my religious garb, the screener at the gate read out loud my “Blues Brothers” tie that said, “On a Mission from God.” Ten paces past the metal detector I went into a nervous panic expecting air marshals to swoop down to prevent me from boarding the plane in case my “Mission from God” was not so holy. Ironically, I probably attracted more attention with my furtive looking about as I made my way to the gate than with my enigmatic tie. So today, we should not perpetuate the racial, religious and cultural profiling of minorities just to provide a false psychic security for the majority. I am not nearly as afraid of the pious and their prayers on airplanes (whether nervous prayers or faithful prayers). I am much more afraid of the muddled thinking that resulted in the bomb that Williams exploded on “The O’Reilly Factor.” NPR was right to terminate an analyst and commentator whose skills of critical thinking have clearly deteriorated after a decade of drinking the Fox News Kool-Aid. The few times I channel-surfed into a Fox News panel the included Williams, he was mostly giving aid and comfort to the propagandists. I did see him take on that miserable, pudgy excuse for a human being, Wm Kristol, for being all war, all the time, but he seemed, as others noticed, to be drinking the cool aid—but then, his arteries are hardening, and the simplistic messages on Fox are a comfortable substitute for thought. Bug-eyed Mara Liasson is little better as a token liberal on Fox.
He also clearly saw where the money is at, and it certainly isn’t on the left. I heard a brief clip of his interview about the firing on O’Reilly, while listening to NPR!, and he was spouting the usual right wing cant, and employing the shouting and anger that characterizes that channel. Good riddance, and I hope he enjoys his blood money.

My first shock came when learning that a black person like Juan Williams would get involved in ugly bigotry about Muslims, when as late as the 1960’s white Americans would say about blacks what he said about Muslims.
I agree that Williams has lost his moral compass when he started associating himself with Fox-evil propaganda outlet and with big-mouthed evil O’Reilly in particular.
So, I applaud the swift decision of Public Radio organization to stop giving this latest bigot a forum and employment.
And good riddance stupid Williams! And may I live to see the evil propaganda outlet of Fox-non-News dismantled for their cowardly cover behind the fig-leave of freedom of speech to keep bigotry, misinformation, libel, hate-mongering and evil propaganda going on at a time when all Americans should form a solid alliance in favor of love, decency, mutual respect and civility.

I am islamo-,christo-, and mosheo-phobe. I go even further than this
affirmation: as long as three large cults remain with us and are supportive of the
plutocratic iron[ic] rule, there will never be peace on earth or justice or truth-
elucidation.
Just look, please, at the structures of these mafia gangs. Do they differ to any
significant degree to from a mafioso, or governmental, army, cia, fbi, police?
And these structures are of god? I say of the devil! The last people who value
god are ulema, priests, and rabbis. These people behave in most in human
ways!
Does one expect any time soon [where “soon” means millennium] to hear from
them such words as apodictic truth [invented by aristotle], timocracy,
pantisocracy, sharing, equal pay for equal needs.
U only hear the word “democracy”! And why? Because it is by far more efficient
Report thisrule for plutocrats than any other, to date devised? That’s why it is assiduously
praised.
Wld u believe that the spelling program rejected the spelling of the words
apodictic, timocarcy, and pantisocracy?
Significant!!! tnx

It is not just the fact that Juan Williams listens to
Report thisthe Faux News Channel but the fact that he appears on
just about every Faux News Channel show he can,
spouting some one or another ‘liberal’ viewpoint.
Not that he is liberal, or progressive in any way.
His brand of liberalism is nothing more than a
dressed up version of neo-conservative politics. He
used the guise of a ‘liberal’ to gain entry to the
money to be made on Faux News and then showed his
true colours by spouting racist and bigoted comments
not once but many times regarding the current
president and others.
His comments regarding Muslims, especially moderate
Muslims are quite offensive in the whole and to be
more specific, he generalizes the fact that all
Muslims are not to be trusted. How can a man, subject
to the vagaries of racism and whole-sale profiling
even suggest that we should now profile another
creeds people? It is for shame that Faux News is
using the public’s airwaves to spread their brand of
utter and offensive nonsense. Yet, we need to balance
the rights of those people with ID10T disease against
the Constitutions enumeration of the freedom of
speech. We cannot and should not shut down a faux
channel of news because they are using that channel
to spread bigotry and ridiculous nonsense.
Given the fact that Mr. Williams is no longer working
for the truly fair and balanced NPR system, I find it
comforting that the system as it is set in place
works and worked in this case. Mr. Williams had no
place on the truly broad minded network National
Public Radio. For his brand of subterfuge and deceit
was galling to me. I listened many times as his
commentary was on the air and wanted to do the
‘vertical charles,’ as he was speaking. The reason is
this: I knew his viewpoints changed from Faux News
Channel to NPR on a regular basis.
Thank you NPR, for seeing through the mask of deceit
and canning for good someone who made a living being
a false bearer of news to the world.

The first step to ending profiling is recognizing that we all do it, recognizing WHEN we are doing it, and having our brain and logic kick in over our emotional fear of “The Other”.
Why do I think that’s what JW was trying to say and nobody, NOBODY on the Right or the Left is listening?

Right on Rev. Shockley - everyone should read The
Report thisPresumption of Guilt, but don’t loose sight of one
aspect = Nobody should be profiled, not the Imam on
his way to his mosque, nor the jack-booted military
attired thug in the grocery store, White or Black…
but hold on, a white skin-head with a nazi flag
deserves to be hated, while a black militant
preaching the death of another race’s babies gets
told to just go home - somewhat lopsided when the
extremes are scrutinized don’t you think? PC Over-
Drive me thinks.
Juan Williams stated a personal opinion not related
to any particular news story - part & parcel for the
big head bill show, and if his contract with npr
precludes such on-air activity with another outlet
his termination is justified, but thats hard to
believe since he’s always on one fox show or
another.

Williams violated the terms of employment with NPR, and NPR is free to run its business the way it wants.
Is it? NPR gets government funding. The government places restrictions on the money it gives out all the time. If the government wanted to, it could tell NPR what it can, or can not do, by threatening to cut funding. If you want government money, you better damned well do what the government tells you to do. Too much control for me, personally.
And, what have the Democrats done for you, lately? More and more, the Democrats are restricting freedom, and choice, not just on economic issues, but personal issues, as well. They wage wars, violate civil liberties, and protect the large corporate bankers. That’s not what this country was founded on. Perhaps you need to learn what freedom really means, and take a trip to visit the Free State Project in New Hampshire.

Stepin Fetchit Uncle Juan finally come out of the closet. Everyone knew he was a closet conservative—just like Alan Colmes—by the simple fact that he would even appear on Fox. Now it’s official.
This really can’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s had a steady supply of blood to the brain. The only question now is how long before he starts taking a wide stance in airport toilets?

This one is a tempest in a teapot. (Come on, that’s a GREAT Tea Party joke!)
Williams violated the terms of employment with NPR, and NPR is free to run its business the way it wants. Case closed. For conservatives, it’s an issue with just too much sweetness, and, like the result of a kid in a candy store, their impending stomach ache is predictable.
Of real concern is where we, as liberals, find ourselves these days.
Conservatives are organizing corporations to overwhelm the media messaging. Conservatives are moving to shut down any and every liberal media outlet. Conservatives are disrupting public meetings. Armed conservatives are threatening the President. Conservatives are mailing real or fake poison to liberals and Democrats. Conservatives are nose-diving airplanes into American buildings. Conservatives are murdering doctors.
We’re under physical attack. Literally. In any other day and age, this would be defined as civil war with one side committed to non-violence.
But we do have a weapon. The vote.
Every single one of us needs to spend five minutes discovering who the Democratic candidate is in your area, and go vote for him or her.
Google your state and the word “candidates”, or go to your State Board of Elections website, or just go to uselections.com. Find the candidates with (D) beside their names, write them on a piece of paper, and vote for them.

Mr. Williams point was valid and well stated. In effect he stated that regardless of personal fears or emotions (such as his own) one should pause in lumping people, in this case Muslims, together with a handful of radicals bent on doing harm to others.
Judging from the comments it’s a lesson many on Truthdig could gain a great deal from.

Wow. A news commentator fired for expressing his opinions on another “news” program. Way to go NPR. I guess NPR only wants people that fit into their liberal agenda. I don’t think Fox has fired anybody for that reason (I could be wrong). Judge Andrew Napolitano ruffles more than a few feathers on Fox, and he’s their head legal analyst.
Their are only two reasons why NPR exists. Government funding, and Car Talk. Without Car Talk, NPR would be dead in the water. Wait, wait, don’t tell me, Fox is evil, and NPR is good.

It’s hard to get your head around this one - the politically correct (read Zionist) NPR fires Juan Williams for Uncle Tomming the right wing neo-cons (read Zionists). Perfect.
The neo-con talk radio in NY, Glenn Beck et. al., is having a field day with this one. Yesterday NY congressman, Peter King, was on absolutely reviling Islam, especially the clerics, to the fevered encouragement of host Steve Malzberg.
The ‘war on Islam’ is no longer a joke, the neo-cons are making it a PR reality.

Williams was an NPR employee, fired by that organization.
For years NPR tried to find a niche for Juan Williams, and failed. His departure is no loss and the remarks that led to his dismissal were certainly outrageous enough.
Sometimes it seems that all of us have lost our way.

I have no idea who this guy is, and despite Rev Madison’s diplomatic words
here, it’s difficult for me to think that anybody on Fox could be a voice of
reason, regardless of what they’re talking about .
Same thing goes for his comments about people dressed in their native
and/or religious attire on airplanes. If Orthodox Jews on airplanes (or
anywhere else for that matter) don’t freak me out, why the hell should
ANYBODY’S ‘attire’ freak him out? If so, then Mr. Williams shouldn’t fly on
airplanes unless he has his own private jet. Guess that’s not the case.
Kind of poetic justice that some asshole like O’Reilly would fire him though,
Report thisat least for saying the exact same thing O’Reilly would say. The hypocrisy
never ceases to amaze me.
