Tiger’s Oppressive Standard of BeautyPosted on Dec 8, 2009
Leave Tiger alone. Enough with the puns—we get that he’s really just a “cheetah” in disguise. Enough with the Barbie-of-the-Day revelations—we get that he’s attracted to a certain type. Enough with the whole thing—we have far more important things to worry about. Yeah, right. Sit down with a friend over lunch and try to have a conversation about health care, climate change, financial regulation or Afghanistan without straying at least once onto the oh-so-unimportant subject of Tiger Woods’ philandering. I’ve given up trying to deny that the unfolding saga is compelling, even if paying attention leaves me feeling a bit disappointed in myself. Prurient interest is rarely something to be proud of. I’m beginning to fear, actually, that the unfolding may never end. If you’re the richest, most famous athlete on the planet, and you have an eye for cocktail waitresses and nightclub hostesses, the opportunities to cheat are probably limited only by the number of hours in the day. It’s becoming clear why Woods’ initial mea culpa was worded vaguely to cover any and all “transgressions.” Wouldn’t want to leave anybody out. I’m not going to pronounce judgment on Woods’ moral fiber, except to state that adultery is bad. I’m also not going to judge the women who have reportedly had affairs with him, except to point out how quick they’ve been, as soon as their names have surfaced, to retain high-priced legal counsel. I will suggest that Woods consider this possibility: Random women he meets in restaurants or bars may not be reduced to putty by his good looks or sparkling wit, but may in fact be aware of how wealthy he is. I was going to critique Woods’ technique of adultery, or at least his apparent selection of playmates, as measured against a theory about philandering developed by my colleague Roxanne Roberts, who has spent years covering the capital’s libidinous social scene for The Washington Post. Roberts postulates that famous, powerful men who decide to stray would be smart to choose women who have just as much to lose if the liaison were to be exposed. Some ultrarich tycoon’s young trophy wife, say, would fit that criterion. Cocktail waitresses and nightclub hostesses, not so much. Advertisement But as more women surface with claims to have bedded Woods, one does begin to marvel at his capacity for multitasking. He is known on the golf course for almost superhuman powers of concentration. Who knew that between shots he was also juggling such complicated logistical arrangements? Or did he have an off-the-course caddie to help with that sort of thing, the way Steve Williams helps him choose between the seven iron and the eight? Here’s my real question, though: What’s with the whole Barbie thing? No offense to anyone out there who actually looks like Barbie, but it really is striking how much the women who’ve been linked to Woods resemble one another. I’m talking about the long hair, the specific body type, even the facial features. Mattel could sue for trademark infringement. This may be the most interesting aspect of the whole Tiger Woods story—and one of the most disappointing. He seems to have been bent on proving to himself that he could have any woman he wanted. But from the evidence, his aim wasn’t variety but some kind of validation. I’m making a big assumption here that the attraction for Woods was mostly physical, but there’s no evidence thus far that he had a lot of time for deep conversation. If adultery is really about the power and satisfaction of conquest, Woods’ self-esteem was apparently boosted only by bedding the kind of woman he thought other men lusted after—the “Playmate of the Month” type that Hugh Hefner turned into the American gold standard. But the world is full of beautiful women of all colors, shapes and sizes—some with short hair or almond eyes, some with broad noses, some with yellow or brown skin. Woods appears to have bought into an “official” standard of beauty that is so conventional as to be almost oppressive. His taste in mistresses leaves the impression of a man who is, deep down, both insecure and image-conscious—a control freak even when he’s committing “transgressions.” Previous item: 21st Century Skills: Education’s New Cliché Next item: Financial Oversight: We’re Still Waiting, Mr. President New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. Report thisless put so much thought into it, but I think you are

too much affected by other men’s idea of female beauty.
He could have anything he wanted, yet he chose women

Ya know, I am totally amused by the denial going on here. Tiger’s choice in women isn’t just an “individual choice” issue. Individual choice can reflect overt racism. It reflects a historical racism toward women of color that has been a huge issue from slavery and post reconstruction from the sexual politics of lynching…yes I said LYNCHING. “How dare Tyrone even look at Betty Sue and lust after her ‘pure womanhood.’ Well, obviously he is lusting after her because his woman is inferior in all her non-whitewoman-ness.”
It’s about d*mn time women of color started speaking out about the obvious racism with which women of color are treated not only by white America but by black America too. I wish we could do a study on the racial features/skin color of the wives of black men who make over X dollars a year. The results would be shocking. Tiger represents many many more, and the number of black women dating other races is nowhere near the heights that black male practices have reached.
Racism in American is very much so based in the denial of the existence of it to keep it going. I don’t know why the h*ll more black women don’t just leave this place for England, Canada, or other developed countries that are DRAMATICALLY less racist towards them as a whole.
Great job for raising the issue Mr. Robinson!!!
CALLING OUT RACISM IS NOT RACIST. It isn’t like a friggin’ fart, like, “Whoever smelt it dealt it,” Jeez! The people in this country make women out to be like they are friggin’ tolerated guests in their own country, and it’s sad that more don’t take exception with the situation, having been thoroughly trained in the art of not stirring up REAL shit that affects their lives. I personally refuse to walk the line.
Anybody (probably many many people) that doesn’t see the racism in this situation is just another product of our racist American culture, attempting to stifle an acknowledgment of what women of color face in society.
If you want to make these concerns out to be illogical or unacademic check out any work from Bell Hooks a very well accomplished writer and professor on issues surrounding race and sex here in the US. Ain’t I a Woman is a book that could educate a lot of the masses in this country that harbor deep feelings about black women that condemn them as inferior women in America. Or you could read Michelle Wallace’s Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman or any anthology of black women writers such as words. Sojourner Truth’s speech Ain’t I a woman, etc.
I quit now because I know all of what I just said will most likely fall on DEAF ears.
Once again thanks for saying what you said Eugene!

All this really is about how unconscious people are. It’s assumed right from the start that the male was the aggressor, not the women.
Why don’t we examine the sex lives of all the women, in the picture instead of focusing on the man. How many lovers has each one of them had? I doubt if Tiger was their only one.
If you look at Barbie, she’s a role model for female aggression, the hair the make up, that’s what female aggression is all about. How dare you ignore me when I’ve spent billions demanding your attention.

Melpol,
All true except that in Tiger’s world, he has avoided anything other than blond and caucasian. A true United Nations playa would sample goodies from other parts of the world.
Heck he just travelled to South Africa; I have seen some serious booty down there. He played in Shangai before then, serious coy honies down in Hong Kong. Didn’t he make a stop in Dubai too? Persian and Arab women have a certain sensual aura that is hard to find anywhere.

Eugene Robinson charitably avoids taking on Woods for explicilty perferring white women. The features he alludes to - long hair, specific body type, and facial features - are also common among black women. The most damning thing here, the common denominator, is the particular race of these women. Why is Robinson avoiding that big elephant in the room?

A few thoughts:
So maybe he is attracted to a certain “type” of woman, why is this a problem?
Because he is black and his wife is Swedish and blonde?
What about Hugh Hefner…is his standard of beauty, cookie-cutter blondes with silicone breasts, “oppressive” too?
Robert DeNiro has a reputation for being attracted to Black women, what is his problem I wonder?
Personally I find this whole celebrity psychoanalysis thing a bit ridiculous and I don’t say this often but in Tiger Woods’ case I would even go so far and say it is racist.
For some reason I doubt as many people would anyone be making such a fuss over his taste in women if he was white.

Okay. As a Black woman, I admit to a more than a little schadenfreude over the whole Tiger Woods affair: the “Cablanasian” with a fixation on not only “Barbies,” as Robinson mentions, but WHITE ones, as Robinson so obviously does not. The exceptional, accomplished Black man who is loath to call himself one is, it turns out, the very embodiment of a ubiquitous, well known stereotype: the wealthy, Black, male athlete with an overactive libido and an insatiable taste for white meat.
If Woods saw the SNL skit that aired this past Saturday, he was probably mortified to be the butt of the joke—and, I would wager, equally annoyed by the fact that he was played by Keenan Thompson.
In the end, it seems, Woods is as common as the women he beds. (Yeah, I’d say Woods definitely has a control fetish.)
The whole business is as deliciously ironic as it is sordid.
The tragedy is the impact on his family and that there are young children involved. If Woods wanted to run around like a randy dog, then he never should have married.
Shame on him. I hope Elin takes him for every million she can.

He married a woman whose total accomplishment to that that point in life was being a babysitter for another golfer. And oh yea, she happens to be very blond. Not particularly attractive, but nevertheless, very blond. Scandinavian blond. Hey, to each his own..

I switched on a repeat of “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” last night. It is a program that Eugene Robertson frequently appears on.
I was uncomfortable to hear teasers for a Tiger Woods story before every commercial break. I can’t prove it, but I noticed some reluctance and embarrassment from Olbermann each time he mentioned the story.
I imagine that there is a team of higher-ups at MSNBC who require certain stories from each broadcast just for ratings’ purposes. That is probably why Rachel Maddow went fishing for a week after Michael Jackson died. Other hosts weren’t so lucky.
Who asked Eugene Robertson to write this article? Was it TruthDig or the Washington Post or someone else? What would happen if PBS asked Bill Moyers’ to do the same?
The difference is: for-profit news and non-profit news. For-profit news can be a reliable source of information and opinion, although the trickle of information is quite slow and often predictably sensationalist.
Non-profit news is the only concerted news effort. If the point is to “dig” deep and to find the most important and interesting stories, then unthoughtful people will inevitably detach from the dialogue. The only way to engage the paying masses seems to be through tabloid journalism or emotionally charged recitation of talking points. Its the case with Fox News, and its the case with MSNBC.
News can be entertaining because it informs and connects us with the bigger picture. However, journalism has been steadily cheapened and dumbed down into a vapid exchange of forgettable yet culturally charged “stories.”
I was born in the 80s, and started using a computer lab in 5th grade, when desktop computers became fiscally viable. Since then, computer technology has ushered a media age in which more and more people are chiming in.
My assertion is that most liberal media outlets do not serve as a counter-point to conservative media outlets. Liberal media outlets often serve as a counterpoint to concerted efforts at informing people.
For this reason I will no longer watch MSNBC. I never watched Fox News

Most American men like the Barbie type because it’s all we see on tv and in magazines. It’s starting to change to brunettes but their bodies still look the same. To make matters worse Tiger lives in a white world and it is obvious that he has this weakness for thin blue-eyed blondes with large breasts. It shows that no matter how brilliant Tiger may be on the golf course he is still subject to the indoctrination and brainwashing that everyone else is. Tiger is not a hero. He’s a golf player. That’s all. He is flawed like all of us. Hell I have a weakness for women with big butts. If I was Tiger I’m sure there would be plenty of big butts everyone I turned so that either someone could blackmail me or so that the elite could use it as another media distraction to keep bankrupting America. Tiger doesn’t matter but it does make a statement about what is wrong with society in general. Everything is disposable. Consumerism has won. Objects and things are now more important that human life. We are ALL expendable and bow to immortal corporatocracy.

Most of the “analysis” of the Tiger Woods scandal is just a silly waste of breath. The truth is that our society (like so many in the world) coddles males, lets them get away with being selfish, thoughtless, irresponsible, completely self-centered and inconsiderate of other people during their childhoods while their sisters are expected to become well-behaved repressed virginal obedient pretty little servants just waiting to be acquired by some male who will support them for life.
Wealthy and successful men frequently have women following them around, offering to have sex with them, no strings attached (so they say). These women may be of some interest because they have been taught that simply by being touched (nevermind more-than-touched) by a powerful male, somehow their lives will change and they will become important, they will have value. Young women who have been taught that the only way they can expect or hope to find someone who cares about them is by looking a certain way, which may require plastic surgery, then having wild sex (or pretending to) with lots of men in the pathetic hope one of those men will love them. Now that is sad.
These women, mostly nameless and faceless but existing in all parts of our country, are a sad reflectiong of our society because they reflect how our we devalue women. Women are assumed to be weak, emotional, incompetent, dumb, silly, or no importance beyond serving as decorations. Men are assumed to strong, logical, capable, smart, important, destined from birth to “run” things and make all the decisions in the home and in the country. Too many of our men have no character at all because they are born good-looking, assumed to be smart and honest, and get away with everything.
All Tiger Woods represents is another rich powerful American male who takes what he wants when he wants it. Read Dave Zirin’s recent comments about the adored Golfer’s refusal to even speak out against the sex trade industry.
And here’s a radical thought: just because women make themselves available does not mean that a married man is forced to have sex with them. He could use some control. He could choose to honor his wife, respect his marriage, and not screw around. He could decide that his wife is too important for him to expose her to sexually transmitted diseases without her even knowing it. He could decide that he would keep his word, respect his wife and teach his kids to do the same by example. He’s not retarded, not limited in resources, not working a back-breaking day far from home and all alone. He could jump on a jet and be home every night, or bring his wife with him.
This isn’t a moral question. It’s just a complete lack of character. And in that, Woods is simply enjoying the perks of being a rich and powerful man in America.

He then goes on, as a white man, to puritanically scold Tiger for his choice in women. Transfer this guy to the Enquirer, its where he most definitely, belongs.

I’m with you, PSmith, what a waste of time this article is. As if we haven’t heard enough from the MSM about Tiger Woods - ALL of it tinged with racism about “that black guy who likes white girls”.
Mr. Robinson goes down that same tabloid path here, how ugly, petty and useless.

The whole “Tiger Woods” thing is predicated on the biggest lie in existence today:
That Tiger Woods (or any golfer for that matter) is an ATHLETE.
Golf is not a “sport.” It is an “activity” more akin to playing canasta or shooting pool. My friends who ballroom dance get more physical activity (they may even be adulterers for all I know) than the fat slobs that litter golf courses around the world.
So, not only is it disturbing that people are interested in Mr. Woods’ questionable integrity, but they are also obsessed with something they believe to be a sport, which is, in fact, is a waste of good land.

Oh Marilyn, oh Marilyn, why’d you do me so wrong,
those long blonde tresses and skin tight dresses have made my wang so long,
Poor, poor, pitiful Tiger, the unassuaged maestro of the long ball(er), is actually a miserable little twit. Yet, like a Bill Clinton or pretty much any guy you know who is given unlimited access to blonde whores will take advantage because that is what they all were put on the earth for. Get real and learn how we got here and maybe you will then understand why these ballers are all alike.

Hey johnnyfarout:
If anyone needed an example of a red herring, you
Report thisprovided one. Earlier this year it was the Michael
Jackson crap, then the balloon boy hoax.
It’s too bad we have to have the irrelevant along with
the bad & the ugly, but professional writers need
steady work & the paparazzi keep the uneducated &
undereducated occupied while the predators prey on us.

If I learn one more goddamn inane thing about a celebrity… Is this about adultery? No it’s not. At least with adultery there’d be some passion and pathos and privacy. This is about an SUV, a marriage contract, and the golf club used to hide the murder of an entire planet load of innocents. So rich ass Woody gets to fuck like a bunny while the rest of us try to capture the moths as they fly out of our purses, so we can have at least something to eat. I do dig the cartoons from China on all this…I think they are on to the real message here. America is a shallow unhealthy place where no one has any sense of proportion left,… just like a Barbie(which by the way have no genitalia—didn’t you ever look?)!

Robinson’s view on the Tiger Woods scandal in a nutshell:
“The brother doesn’t bang any sistas.”
I can’t believe Robinson draws a paycheck for writing the drivel he regularly turns out!
There are at least a dozen amatuer bloggers out there who crank out better stuff than Robinson.

It was reported on a news program that 90 percent of professional athletes have affairs. We all should know that this Tiger Woods episode is just a small tip of the iceberg. Your Barbie allusion became a possibility with the second disclosure and a likely association with the third disclosure. The reason for the public’s fascination is more profound. The more important public issues are only followed by people who are more reasonably oriented. These people are more cognitively evolved than the more authoritarian majority. With so many more important issues out there it is certainly immoral for the public media to sensationalize this Tiger fiasco. After all the public media is the de facto main educational source for the majority of Americans after they complete their State supported, required schooling. We have evolved standards for state supported schools. These standards have even been supported in court. The public media, being free of these standards, has failed miserably to educate reasonably. The link between journalists and politics is one significant factor and the dopamine effect of learning about these scandals is only one miniscule effect. I may have failed miserably but I was trying to put this story into a broader context.

Report thisOne of the reasons I love this site is the lack of
bullstuff gossip crap. Just because Eugene Robinson
wrote it, and gave it a sort of feminist perspective,
does not make it less vacuous.

Tiger’s Oppressive Standard of Beauty
Posted on Dec 8, 2009 BY Eugene Robinson
Prostitution & hypocrisy have been around a long
time.
Fortunately the paparazzi , professional writers, &
voyeurs benefit.
Of course the current White House predator is always
pleased when a red
herring hits the press & enhances his legerdemain.
