The headlines scream as if Godzilla were rising from the icy depths of the Potomac: “Sarah Palin: Threat or Menace?”

OK, I haven’t actually seen that one, at least not verbatim. But the commentariat is in full run-for-the-hills mode over the prospect that Palin could still have a political future. A lot of Democrats—and quite a few Republicans, too—seem worried that she intends to stomp the capital to smithereens, perhaps along with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Her appearance at the Tea Party Convention in Nashville was imbued with portent that might have been appropriate for, say, Napoleon’s escape from Elba.

As is too often the case, Washington seems to be out of step with objective reality.

While the political insiders who are supposed to have their finger on America’s pulse worry about Palin’s burgeoning “popularity,” the fact is that her approval ratings have been sinking. According to a new Washington Post poll, only 37 percent of Americans have a favorable impression of Palin—a new low. Meanwhile, 55 percent have an unfavorable impression of the erstwhile Alaska governor, which is a new high figure.

More to the point, Palin’s refusal to rule out a run for the White House seems, at present, completely ludicrous. An astounding 71 percent of Americans do not believe that Palin is qualified to serve as president, the Post poll found. This number includes not only virtually all Democrats and two-thirds of independents but also a majority of Republicans—52 percent—who believe that Palin should not be allowed anywhere near the Oval Office.

The evidence suggests that the longer Palin struts and frets upon the national stage, the less seriously she is taken as a political figure. Even among those who describe themselves as conservatives—a necessary constituency if a Palin candidacy is ever to gain traction—fewer than half think she is qualified to be president, according to the Post poll. That’s a sharp decline from the 66 percent of conservatives who believed her to be qualified last fall.

Indeed, why wouldn’t her numbers fall? The one concrete political step that Palin has taken since the 2008 election was to resign as governor with 17 months left in her term, explaining—and I’m paraphrasing here, but I think I’m being fair—that all those official duties were way too much of a hassle.

She also wrote an entertaining and lucrative book, established herself on the speaking circuit at a reported $100,000 per lecture, and signed on as a commentator for Fox News. Those are all great moves for a political celebrity. For a potential presidential candidate, apparently, not so much.

She’s a great performer, though. And I’m not mad at her for writing notes for the tea party speech on her palm; it was almost charming, in a regular-gal kind of way. Palin knows how to whip up a crowd, and her nickname from her days as a high school basketball star, Sarah Barracuda, aptly describes a finely tuned killer instinct. Her put-down of the Obama administration—“How’s that hopey-changey stuff working out for you?”—might have been unfair, but it did have teeth.

Where does any of this really take her, though? It’s certainly true that Palin has a knack for expressing the restlessness and anger of many Americans who are buffeted by economic crisis, fed up with a dysfunctional political culture in Washington and tired of feeling as if their voices are being ignored. So far, however, all that Palin’s talent has accomplished is to make her the Tea Party Queen. That could be a valuable platform for a national campaign, but even a politician with Palin’s undeniable charisma is eventually going to have to, you know, say something. Beyond nostrums about “common-sense solutions,” I mean.

What does Palin actually propose? I realize she might consider this a trick question, like the time that mean Katie Couric asked about what she reads. But isn’t it awfully patronizing to act as if her followers are so dazzled by her very presence that they will never seek to pin her down on a single issue? The polls certainly suggest this is a serious miscalculation.

There’s a word for those who, like Palin, act as if the voters are mere sheep who don’t need to be troubled by discussion of what their government should actually do. The word—and Palin might want to cover her ears—is elitist.

Certainly, well-informed commenters are aware that
any politician who is not a functionaire of the
illuminazi machine is scapegoated by the machine and
its functionaries.

Similarly, as illuminazi functionaries scapegoat my
comments, more recently with an “intellectual”
twist.
Similarly to the “final scapegoating” recently by
MOSSAD functionaries of the alleged HAMAS leader in
a Dubai hotel.

Such ignorant puppets fulfill their duty in a
mechanized manner, IAW their instructions. Too bad
they dont know how to support accuracy and truth.

“Go back to normal” ?
When the leadership of the US is manipulated by “the
queen´s men” and israeli leadership, and the tail is
wagging the dog?

When israeli leadership, who has attacked US ships
and other property two or more times and has been
“pardoned” by US leadership, continues to commit
genocide against palestineans, and proposes to drop
the bomb on Iran, which bomb was gratuitously
provided by the NAZI Bush family?

Recent polls show that Sarah Palin is losing
support? Right. “We’ll know our disinformation
program is complete when everything the American
public believes is false.”- William Casey, CIA
Director (from first combined staff meeting, 1981)
as recorded by the great American
investigator/historian, Mrs. Mae Brussell.

When US and some western world media are controlled
by the forces that initiated the CIA?
Americans and the western world citizenry are
supposed to believe “polls” conducted by such
“media”?

When US leadership wants to damage the DNA of
everyone who is “phasered,” by the marvelous, see-
thru-concrete machine developed on contract for the
CIA, raking in millions of profit for former MOSSAD
officer, Michael Chertoff?  Perhaps still a MOSSAD
officer?

And, as far as the phrase “Palin Sucks,” is
concerned - - .  Someone´s libido has slipped out
into revealed thoughts that take on a quasi-
acceptable nature.  Again, revealing the handsome
femininity of one, Mrs. Sarah Palin.

Israel to drop the bomb on Iran?  What stupidity.
How long will the tail wag the dog ? Which dog
appears to be rabid - - ?

Agreed.  Mrs. Sarah Palin is a threat to the
current, holocausal machine that is moving the world
toward nuclear devastation.

It’s incredible how little Americans know of U.S. history. The GOP should be jailed as child abusers! They have successfully spun American history in such a way that their ignorant base considers itself “real” Americans while not possessing a single clue that the principles upon which the nation was founded were in opposition to everything the ruling plutocracy stands for; corporatism, conservatism, mercantilism, central banks, foreign intervention, state church, etc. The idea of freedom, inalienable rights, etc. for all men did not rise from conservatism, it came from enlightenment. The saddest part is that this so-called Republican base is made up of the most ill-educated of American society and they have been duped into supporting those that are enslaving them!

“Between believing a thing and thinking you know is only a small step and quickly taken.” –Mark Twain

I think Chris Matthews described perfectly the real danger with Palin and those of her ilk:

“I think she’s [Sarah Palin] an empty vessel, ready to be filled by ideology she doesn’t even understand and that is really scary. We saw it with Dan Quail, we saw it with Dubya; nothing is more frightening than an empty vessel with power.” -Chris Matthews, (MSNBC’s Hardball, broadcast Feb. 9, 2010)

Mr. Robinson puts his finger on the biggest difference between Palin and Reagan. Believe it or not, the early Reagan (see his famous “Time for Choosing” speech on behalf of Goldwater) was all about sepcific details. He could get his facts wrong, of course, but he did believe in presenting ideas backed up by facts as he saw them. So far, Sarah Palin ... not so much.

Palin is the image we see in the mirror on mornings when we decide to look closely at our lives.  Palin, and Cheney and those people who went to Haiti and stole those people’s children, and the pedophile priests and politicians and our Hollywood movie stars who can’t deal with fame and fortune and decide to disfigure their face in order to cling to a moment’s more of their miserable existence.  She is down at the bottom of the same ingenious melting pot in a nation that decided to scrape it.  We now are at a point where we can’t stand the sight of ourselves.  She is someone we used to call a neighbor who hit the big time.  I can’t imagine any American not putting herself at the top of the heap.

As Lawrence O’Donnell said on Joe Scarborough Thursday;Sarah Palin is the Paris Hilton or Dan Quayle of Politics.

Something we have to remember when ever considering her as a candidate for President or Secretary of State (laugh) is; she is a product of William Kristol. That the neo-cons—this druge in particular—has propped her up and unleashed her on the public. That there is a concerted effort by a cabal of Machiavellian who might understand her capacity is no deeper than a teaspoon, but she is the weight and mean of a media harlot around which a 24 hour news cycle can’t avert it’s eyes; the thing that train wrecks are made of.

That she is a shill on the public to galvanize the tea party to the GOP, who at it’s core see her for what she is, but will ultimately concede in a Borgish surrender to paint the White house Vanilla in and out.

The thing to do is ask David Duke what his opinion of Sarah Palin is, not Ron Paul. Remembering his vitriol when Michael Steele was elected to head the RNC.
**************************************************

Interesting! I often thought Quayle would come storming back in 1996 or 2000 to sweep the GOP nomination, and, had he been smart enough, he might have.  But clearly DQ wasn’t nearly as smart as Richard Nixon, who spent the 6 years between 1962 an 1968 working tirelessly for just about EVERY Republican he could, building up a HUGE reservoir of good-will and political debts that carried him past Romney, Reagan, Rockefeller and others to the nomination.  Quayle was too stupid to do that—and he could have!  He was certainly more experienced and less ignorant than Sarah Palin (Not saying much there, but it’s still a fact).

How can anyone find comfort in the fact that “only 37%” of those polled have a favorable impression of palin—that’s more than 1 in 3 (read: millions of voters)?!

Or that an “ASTOUNDING” 71% of Americans do not think her qualified to be president???  Apparently, 29% of those polled (almost 1 in 3) think she is or at least could be—now THAT’S astounding!

Oh, and WOWZERS, a statistically meaningless majority, (52%) of republicans don’t think she should be allowed anywhere near the oval office—meaning that almost 1 in 2 republicans does not dismiss this as a ludicrous idea?!

We are SO screwed!

The real people pulling the strings are not tea baggers, Palin or Obama, instead it is the divisive separation instilled by the plutocracy and their new people status corporation.

Manipulation for president and opportunism for Congress, what ever happened to banning lobbyists from the halls of congress, there would be little opportunity in thinking like that.

What the author of this article seems to be forgetting is that if the Obama-trajectory continues, most progressives would not vote to reelect him even if he were running against Sarah Palin.

I wouldn’t, given the sordid depth of his betrayals and my weariness with that whole “lesser of two evils” shill game.

Many of Obama’s former supporters simple stayed hoe in Massachusetts, in effect voting to give America its secretly much-wished for cup of hemlock. By 2012, the social conditions in America would parallel those of the Weimar. Obama and the Dems will almost certainly be blamed, and rightfully so. The Republicans too, but Congress may still be controlled by the Dems and, sad to say, we all know who the president is.

Palin’s 37% showing at this time is nothing to laugh at. The Nazi Party was elected to office, I believe, with something just sort of that.

My point is that the author of this article is, like most of us progressives, guilty of an utter incapacity to think strategically. We like to blame the Republicans, we like to ridicule Palin, and we particularly like to blame the Blue Dogs. But aside from our superciliously precious chortles or gratuitous exercises in hubris, we only rarely see what is manifesting right under our nose.

I am not suggesting hysteria, mind you. I do think, however, that it’s high time our side began taking the long view in terms of political planning.

Obama has been an unmitigated disaster, and now it’s time to turn the page. Instead of patting ourselves on the back for being so smartly discerning (sic) about the psychology of voters in 2012—let’s all remember that many of us voted for this dubious “agent of change”—maybe it’s time to acknowledge that it’s way past closing time in America.

In two years all that we fear could absolutely happen to us, almost in a heartbeat.

The question is what are we doing about it, and will it take us out of the same sad, sorry box we’ve been unconsciously inhabiting for decades?

Inherit the Wind writes my thoughts and fears exactly. I was young and very
politically involved in the days when Nixon (his forced resignation was one of
the highlights of hope in my political life) and Reagan were elected and I
couldn’t believe it!, still can’t actually. I was also very involved against the
Vietnam war and thought when the U.S. finally withdrew defeated that we’d
learned something and that couldn’t happen again. But the ignorance never
ends. After Bush’s appointment to the presidency and his clear flaunting of law
and sense, he won a second term! and now Obama, Mr. Hope and Change,
continues his policies. We still take war for granted, as if murdering hundreds
of thousands of people is ok, and we still vote for slogans. I’ve been told for
years that I’m wasting my vote when I write in a candidate who was excluded
from the ballot, but it wouldn’t be a waste if everyone else did so too instead of
choosing the lessor of 2 evils. Considering our history, who can be surprised if
Palin becomes president? As far-fetched as it seems, it fits the pattern. As long
as we remain so proud of our ignorance, and complacent in it - we’re the Best!
- we can’t possibly advance. Turns out hope really is just another four lettered
word.

In high school the Eagle Scout vied with the Prom Queen for Class President. Their joint mission was to amuse, entertain and distract us. They left the issues to the class nerds who rarely voted anyway.
The high school remains our single universal social institution. As it goes, so goes the nation. The elitist is the student who achieved a ninth grade reading level.
Print is out. The image is the rage. The traditional facts to form opinion is an outdated process. The first soundbites to reach the ears 24/7 dictate cognition. Talk radio plants the seed during the commuting hours. The only way to lessen the influence is to increase unemployment.
The corporations control the media and the message. The general term for this is information control. In the old days brainwashing was the staple of science fiction. We called it “far out” in those times. It was outlandish to think of nations marching to their doom as unresponsive robots in lock step. The far out has become common place.

I can echo what Inherit the Wind says. In the runup to the 2000 election, I was rooting for Bush to get the Republican nomination because I figured Gore would clean his clock. Right.

It was in 1998 or 1999 that either Time or Newsweek had Dubya on the cover with the caption, “President Bush?”. So he was being promoted then and we know he got the royal treatment from the press. They could have destroyed him.

If the press wanted to, they could simply ignore Palin and she would become as non-existant as Dennis Kucinich. Barrels of ink are spilled following her every move. The same is true of the Tea Baggers. They fancy themselves as some kind of uprising against the establishment. Hah! They are so ignorant they don’t even see their puppet masters. Again, the press could simply ignore them as it surely would ignore a left “tea bag” movement. Nobody would know about it except the participants and a few of us on the progressive blogs. We certainly would not get tens of millions worth of free airtime to talk about reining in corporations, taxing the weathy, cutting the pentagon budget, and ending foriegn wars of aggression, even though there is certainly a mass base for such positions.

So Palin is completely a media creation, up to and including being on Rupert Murdoch’s payroll. Her fortune is made at a hundred grand a pop. Imagine that.

Palin’s job is not to organize a majority to get elected President, although that is always a possibility. Her job is to organize that ignorant rightwing element whose interests are diametrically opposed to those who pull her strings; to drag the body politic even further to the right.

A bit disjointed, but I’m just letting it flow here this morning.

Another thing that someone said is “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Nobody ever said “When the going gets tough, quit your job and go on a book tour”. If somehow Ms. Palin is elected to another office of any kind anywhere, those who vote for her deserve what they get.

“No one ever went broke underestimating the American public.” —Didn’t H.L. Mencken say something like that? Or was it Mark Twain?

Actually it was PTBarnum and the phrase was..“never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public”.

Palin as threat or menace…no , just a symptom in my opinion, a symptom of the chasm between our legislators and the needs and hopes of the public. When a figure as ludicrous, as basically ignorant of issues and answers as Palin, rises to national prominance, however overrated or temporary that spotlight may be, Washington should understand how much they have lost in the eyes of the American public.

Worse they aren’t just talking about destroying democracy like they did the Free market (“Free”= Accessibilty, Not unabashed hedonism), but actually destroying the Republic by advocating Secession!
Come on, they freely admit they Loathe Our Lady Liberty’s beckon call to humanity. Not to just come here, but to aspire to create their own. They hate the French, The Germans, even the Canadians and the English- other Democracies. allies!
Is the reason the Godfathers of the Teabagging orgy are willing to destroy the very foundation of our Founding, because what they desire (envision as Utopia) is only found in 3rd world countries anymore?
These are the same assholes throughout history who constantly return to socio economic cast system using various mutations of the same arguement. We are Smarter, We are more Priviledged, We are Blessed, We are divinely anointed.
What they advocate is a vile mix of all of the above. “Talent” does not drive a global economy, let alone a national economy, to the brink of collapse.
Nor in Christianity does God Pre anoint anyone as his ‘Chosen’- you must attain it through your good deeds on earth. Why bother with Judgement, when everyones already been Pre sorted? The ‘Blessed’ are lavished with Wealth, power and prviledge, while the ‘damned’ struggle and suffer?
Gee that sounds alot like the Monarchies, The Ceasars and Phaorahs claims.
Only thing these idiots have bastardized more than the concept of Democracy and Free market is Christianity (and Monotheism)
This is the same ideology Humanity has been fighting against for millenia.

“No one ever went broke underestimating the American public.” —Didn’t H.L. Mencken say something like that? Or was it Mark Twain?

In my wildest dreams I could never have imagined Richard Nixon being elected President, and then being re-elected.  He was a horror and a disgrace.

But he was and I had to lower my expectations.

Then, in my wildest dreams I couldn’t IMAGINE Ronald Reagan getting the GOP nomination. Compared to Richard Nixon he was an ignorant dunce.  But he did.  Still, I couldn’t IMAGINE him defeating Jimmy Carter.  He did, and, to my amazement, got re-elected and even deified!  He was a disaster.

So I had to lower my expectations again, even more.  I NEVER expected Dumbya to get elected (of course, he wasn’t) and I CERTAINLY couldn’t imagine the American people being DUMB enough to re-elect him.  They were. Compared to Reagan he was an ignorant, inarticulate DUNCE. He was a catastrophe, bringing us to the brink of fascist dictatorship.

So as absurd and horrifying as the idea of a viable Palin candidacy is, as clearly ignorant, arrogant, elitist, inexperienced and incompetent as she has shown herself to be, I’ve seen too many times how over the last 42 years the American voter has elected worse and worse.  Compared to George W. Bush, Sarah Palin is an ignorant, racist uneducated DUNCE!

And she’s the darling of the far right which has ruled the GOP more and more since Reagan’s ascendancy in 1980—30 years now.

When the fire is small, people tend to dismiss it, laugh at it. But given correct condition, for example, hot wind and dry weather, a simmering fire will rage thru the forest and turn it into hell.

Mainstream media cheer a sinking Sarah’s poll as evidence of her doom. They had done that before. When she was chosen VP candidate, when her daughter’s pregnancy broke the news, after Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric, after shoppinggate, or ethic complaints, or her resignation, or Levi’s attack, or the loss of NY 23, or NJ and VA candidates asked her to stay away, or Scott Brown avoiding to discuss about her, etc.

Have the mainstream media succeeded to put her fire out? They have tried their best. So far they have failed.

Sarah is waiting for the right condition. If Obama fails, she will prevail. That is why the White House sweat at night.
