The Politics of Stupidity Strike Again

By E.J. Dionne, Jr.

Can a nation remain a superpower if its internal politics are incorrigibly stupid?

Start with taxes. In every other serious democracy, conservative political parties feel at least some obligation to match their tax policies with their spending plans. David Cameron, the new Conservative prime minister in Britain, is a leading example.

He recently offered a rather brutal budget that includes severe cutbacks. I have doubts about some of them, but at least Cameron cared enough about reducing his country’s deficit that alongside the cuts, he also proposed an increase in the value-added tax from 17.5 percent to 20 percent. Imagine: a fiscal conservative who really is a fiscal conservative.

That could never happen here because the fairy tale of supply-side economics insists that taxes are always too high, especially on the rich.

This is why Democrats will be fools if they don’t try to turn the Republicans’ refusal to raise taxes on families earning more than $250,000 a year into an election issue. If Democrats go into a headlong retreat on this, they will have no standing to govern.

The simple truth is that the wealthy in the United States—the people who have made almost all the income gains in recent years—are undertaxed compared with everyone else.

Consider two reports from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. One, issued last month, highlighted findings from the Congressional Budget Office showing that “the gaps in after-tax income between the richest 1 percent of Americans and the middle and poorest fifths of the country more than tripled between 1979 and 2007,” the period for which figures are available.

The other, from February, used Internal Revenue Service data to show that the effective federal income tax rate for the 400 taxpayers with the very highest incomes declined by nearly half in just over a decade, even as their pre-tax incomes have grown five times larger.

The study found that the top 400 households “paid 16.6 percent of their income in federal individual income taxes in 2007, down from 30 percent in 1995.” We are talking here about truly rich people: Using 2007 dollars, it took an adjusted gross income of at least $35 million to get into the top 400 in 1992, and $139 million in 2007.

The notion that when we are fighting two wars, we’re not supposed to consider raising taxes on such Americans is one sign of a country that’s no longer serious. Why do so few foreign policy hawks acknowledge that if they lack the gumption to ask taxpayers to finance the projection of American military power, we won’t be able to project it in the long run?

And if we are unwilling to have a full-scale debate over whether nation-building abroad is getting in the way of nation-building at home, we will accomplish neither.

Our discussion of the economic stimulus is another symptom of political irrationality. It’s entirely true that the $787 billion recovery package passed last year was not big enough to keep unemployment from rising to over 9 percent.

But this is not actually an argument against the stimulus. On the contrary, studies showing that the stimulus created or saved up to 3 million jobs are very hard to refute. It’s much easier to pretend that all this money was wasted, although the evidence is overwhelming that we should have stimulated more.

Then there’s the very structure of our government. Does any other democracy have a powerful legislative branch as undemocratic as the U.S. Senate?

When our republic was created, the population ratio between the largest and smallest state was 13 to 1. Now, it’s 68 to 1. Because of the abuse of the filibuster, 41 senators representing less than 11 percent of the nation’s population can, in principle, block action supported by 59 senators representing more than 89 percent of our population. And you wonder why it’s so hard to get anything done in Washington?

I’m a chronic optimist about America. But we are letting stupid politics, irrational ideas on fiscal policy and an antiquated political structure undermine our power.

We need a new conservatism in our country that is worthy of the name. We need liberals willing to speak out on the threat our daft politics poses to our influence in the world. We need moderates who do more than stick their fingers in the wind to calculate the halfway point between two political poles.

And yes, we need to reform a Senate that has become an embarrassment to our democratic claims.

Hey cute Big Texan, Dennis Sexton, Wellington, Texas

Lets reminisce,  from the moment that I retrieved the
message with all those signitures on it with the Crypto
Scemes for the Seventh Fleet that had been changed due
to possible comprimise, through the saga of the
J A P A N E S E   J E W L E R Y   B O X,

up till our moment in the E N L I S T E D   M E N’ S
C L U B   the middle of May, 1971.  I am sure you
remember E V E R Y   T H I N G   W E L L   since it
lined your pockets all these years.

Well,  You remember LTJG Phillip Janik, the Operations
Officer, over one of my shoulders and Ens. Buhre, the
Communications officer over the other shoulder as I
was flipping through I believe the Oct/70 messages trying
to find the message and when I found it,  Janik grabbed it
out of my hand and ran to the Crypto room to get the right
crypto assignments.  And I, being very tired, and thinking
that I was just doing my job, went back down to my rack.
But,  RMC Procter , followed me down to my rack, didn’t he?  You know he did, and told me that I made him look very bad,  and I said “Chief, if I did, it was not on
purpose, had you been next to me,  I would have given the
message to you to give to Janik.”  And Chief Procter said
“I will never make E8 now because of this and you are going to pay dearly.”  And, little did either one of us
know that CMDR Dyer was getting his ass reamed for letting
the Fleet Broadcast drop for almost four hours. Remember,
on our watch, it never dropped even for a minute.
So before we even get back to the States from Nam, word
is all over the Operations Dept. that Chief Procter is
out after my ass.  I know you remember that well tooooo.
And , then as soon as we arrive back to the States
we get orders to return to Nam leaving within ten days.
And now most of the ship knows that Chief Proctor is
out after my ass.  So I ask for a meeting with the
Communications officer and we have it in the CRYPTO ROOM.
I ask him for a transfer, and he denys it, so I ask for
a temporary swap within our squadron until the heat blows
over, and he tells me you are to important to the operations of radio for me to let you go, you aren’t going
anywhere and off back to Nam we go.
And BUPERS told our command that they were holding back
rank since we were so busy, until we returned but would
get our rank retroactivly when we returned.  So , CDMR
Dyer, who was on his third passover for full bird Captain
was waiting axiously the whole trip over to find out if
he was going to make Captain or be forcefully retired from
the USN.  He also sceduled a one night stop over in
Yukuska , Japan for liberty since we had been out to sea
so much.  And he also rented the Enlisted Men’s club on
the base and was throwing a booze party for the crew,
him picking up the bill, an all night booze party for the
crew.  Then, the day before we get to Japan, the new
promotions came in over radio via the fleet broadcast
and Cmdr Dyer was passed over for the third time and he
was being retired by the USN and now this mostly bitter
man became very bitter, didn’t he.  The Z-grams had also
contributed to his bitterness and also with his falling
out with the CNO. (we loved those Z-grams though, didn’twe
So here goes me and our good ole buddy Bobby Rezac, of
Owatonna MN on liberty, one night in Japan, most of the
crews first time ever in Japan.  And Bobby and I did stop
in at the booze party, didn’t even take a drink, and
decided ,like others, that we may never see Japan again
so why spend it with the crew that we see all the time
and we went into town.  And had a great time, finally
settling in a tavern, me running in and out dickering
for a price on a Japanese Jewelery box that I was getting
for Barbara, and I KNOW you remember her well, for I
turned you on to that Englewood Experience that I stole
from Astro.  END PART I,  THE JAPANESE JEWLERY BOX.

Hey radio pukes,  that would be you,

Dennis Sexton…Wellington , Texas
Robert Rezac….Owatonna   , MN
Gerald Goodwin Augusta     Georgia
Harlan Mayer….Wenatchee   Washington
Michael Ratliff Charlettsville Virginia
Larry Dorman….........Whatever town in Texas you are now
(and others)
H U M I L I A T I O N

You all moved up a notch in rank when I was illegally
removed from radio…didn’t you ! ! ! !after I trained
each one of you…..so listen up !!!!!!!!!!!!!pukes.

So the command’s plan was taking shape, yes, it was
humiliating going from a leading radioman to the laundry,
but not for the reasons the command thought.

As I mentioned before , the Supply Officer, LTJG Smith
was getting off the ship before our year deployment to
the Gulf of Tonkin and I was the last one he talked to
before he left the ship. He said that I was on my own now
and there was nothing more he could do for me.  He said
the little protection that he could offer, he was
putting in my record recommendation for E4 in Supply.
(the command tore this up just as soon as he left the ship
He also suggested that I miss ships movement, go home,
and work to get legal counsil.
The command didn’t hardly wait until the mooring lines
were off the ship to start the sleep depravation and
continue with their humiliation.  I worked the mid-night
shift in the laundry by myself, that is how they got the
night end of the depravation, making me muster all day
long, kept me from getting sleep during my scheduled
sleeping hours.
They needed to find a way to get me out of Supply Dept.
to make their 28B discharge look legitamate.  So they had
a couple of Officers start leaving big shit turds in their
skivies.  Laundrymen had to handle each piece of officers
laundry BEFORE they went in the wash, to stencil or make
sure that they had stencils.  Of course this was
humiliating, but I didn’t fall for the trap, bit my tongue
Never said a word, except to Horace and Robby.  The
command got really frustrated at this. One of the officers
was Ens. Bradshaw of Deck Dept. The other Ens Montgomery.
Bradshaw started having his men call me ole shitty
drawers to try to intimidate me into action. That didn’t
work either.  But of course, they always get their way,
especially out to sea and you have no recourse. They are
God out there.

“The Racists Return”

in the form of the media with their politics of divide.

Thought I would relate a story.

After I was illegally removed from radio,  the Supply
Officer wanted to use me in the Supply Office since I
was the fastest typer on the ship.  I did not know that
the command was trying to get the REASONS OF UNFITNESS
discharge on me, nor did I know of all the injustice
and fabrication that was being stacked in my service
record.  I just knew that I had been screwed, still
believed my radio friends were my friends and was just
trying to fulfill my enlistment, I had already tried to
get help from the Naval Base and the command quickly
aprehended me and had denied me any legal counsil.
The Supply Officer, had to comply with the Command in
some manner and did not tell me of the Command’s plans for
me until a year later, upon transfer(or discharge).
I was the last one he talked to before he marched down
the gangway.
Anyway, the first step of the BEEN H.A.D. was the
humiliation and the Executive Officer told the Supply
Officer to put me in the Laundry.  This was by far,
the hottest (including engine rooms), busiest job on the
ship.  There were no breaks, you went in and hustled until
your shift was over, and I mean HUSTLE.
Back in those days,  blacks had to think smart and act
stupid.  There was still much racial tension on USN ships.
As a matter of fact one Aircraft carrier was burnt down.
There were two black dudes that worked in the laundry.
Horace Coles, from Balt.MD. who I found out went to high
school and was good friends with my crazy cousin Jeff
Yeager.  Robby was the other a little guy, but could play
one game of football, from Oakland.  Since the work was
so hard, laundrymen got other benifits, like no standing
in chow line, no duty sections, in Supply Dept, which had
its own bennies.  Whites didn’t want to work in the laundry, you had to handle all officers dirty skivvies
individually to make sure they had stensils, and other
humiliating things that went along with being a laundryman
So , here I came, the Command foolish enough to believe
that this humiliation would force me to go U.A. or demand
Administrtive Discharge.
We all became like brothers, all three of us.
They couldn’t believe this White Boy could keep up with
them on the STEAM PRESSERS.  I beat them as much as they
beat, a white boy , beating a black dude on the steam
pressers, it amuzed them.  I can still see Robby looking
over his shades with his sarcastic grin on his face,
and Horace , who was in charge, just shaking his head at
me and Robby.
Anyway, back in 1971, race was still a big issue and
off of the ship, black and white did not integrate, at all
except…Robby and Horace used to take me to concerts
where I was the only white face there.  I got scared at
first, this was 1971. In San Diego, I believe it was
the CHILITES that we saw.. I was frozen scared only white
face…they told me to relax, no one gives and damn that
you are even here , let alone that your white…
GOOD ADVISE, AND THEY WERE RIGHT.

An accomplishment,

Because of the illegally contrived 28B discharge
(REASONS OF UNFITNESS),  here is what I had to outrun
all my life.

28B stamped accross my face,  because every employer
demands to see your DD214, and on mine it also said to
refer to DD215, which was the correction.

E2 after four years of service stamped boldly on my
discharge papers.  Of course this doesn’t show that I
made E5 in record time.  So of course employers wondered why that, after four years of service E2.

Illegally lifted security clearance, I really don’t need
to tell you the jobs this cost me and the financial status
, potential or other wise.

And although they did put under Honorable Conditions,
it was a General Discharge,  (illegally and done decievingly behind my back).  And of course this to cost
me money and other problems…

Despite all this,  and being denied interviews because
of all this,  I was what I consider pretty successful.
Of course,  my discharge did not allow for me to make the
big bucks.  The one job that I did land for a Fortune 100
company and also loved was because I when asked for the
DD215 correction,  I told them I lost it.  And when I
showed up as the lead tech installing communications at
the Pentagon,  the Government slipped the DD215 to my
bosses at the Area Office.  I can tell you the name of
the person they slipped it to.
This washed that career up.  However,  I was so good
at what I did,  Cecil County MD begged me to come do their communications, which I did until and quit after
being asked one to many times about the 28B discharge.

So my earnings were held to a minimum, but despite that
was able to own four homes at one time, all mostly paid
for. rented three out.  I hustled and bustled, had to,
it helped that I had a wife that was very frugal.
Of course, financial times change, but was able to slip
some help by selling the rent houses to my son,  who is
an outstanding person. Another Accomplishment.
(even though we have been fighting for a year , we went
for the first 22 yrs of his life without any friction,
father & son,  thats good).
Because my earnings were low,  I had to maintain all
four houses while working at least 50 hours a week, mostly
out of town,  this meant, plumbing, electrical ,
carpentry, and most other repairs,  while still being able
to spend quality time with my son and his mother.
I WAS ONE BUSY MUTHA FUCKER ALL   MY LIFE !!@
AND FUCK YOU USN.

money if he would co-operate with them.
I have enough paper work to take each one of them

Court,  the Feds would have to do something.
So they are facing fraud and all sorts of other
Federal Criminal Charges ...would loose everything they
owned and face about 20 years.

In summery,  I saved my Captains Command for him
and got punished for it.

The Commands whole simple minded story to the
Chief of Naval Personnel revolved around a Captain’s Mast
with formal charges that never occured. To back this
story up they cited a NIS report that doesn’t exist.
And since their whole simple minded story never occurred
and didn’t exist, they had to get me out with a
REASONS OF UNFITNESS DISCHARGE to make me appear
unbelievable and them believable.
The Supply Officer stopped them while he could.
Since my record was other wise excellent, they had to
fabricate and conjer.
To get the 28B discharge they had to ram four NJPs
in a four month time down my throat, all of which I was
not guilty of and all out to sea and in Viet Nam.
Along with the NJPs came the alienation, humiliation
and the depravations to instill shame in me so I could
never talk about this experience. It worked.
When I finally retrieved my service record and read
a page or two ,  I gave up investigating, thought all was
done..  I puked and laid in bed for six months crying all
this out..THEN

deceased dad told me to get up and read my record and
read it again and again until I got it.  And I did and
saw that it was all provable lies. that they didn’t cover

Watch every night.

I was dazed, delirious, and no more than a piece of
putty,  but still on my feet, barely.  There were a few
Marines that tried best they could to keep me moving.
None understood that why the command was doing what they
were doing.  The only ones that really knew were the
radiomen and some of the Naval Officers.  This had been
going on since Mar of 1971 in some form or other, the
Former Supply Officer had been my only defense.
On Sep, 6 1972 The acting legal officer, Ens Montgomery
a Acedemy Grad who in the Eng rooms and who no one one
the ship liked including all the other officers, had
me meet him on the HELO pad to sign some orders.  I was
to be airlifted to a prison camp in Saigon, pack your
seabag, you will be leaving within the next twelve hours.
I was very thankful believe it not.  I couldn’t have made
it another few days.  So I went and packed my seabag,
weak, dazed but thankful the piece of putty that I was.
That was early in the morning of Sep 6, 72,  by dinner
time I was getting aprehensive ,,,then a first class
Petty Officer from Deck Hines was his name came to me
and told me the ship was heading to the Philipines and
that I wasn’t going to Saigon. That I was going to
be getting off in the Philipines and be processed for
an undesirable discharge. I almost made it , on more month
and my four years would have been complete, the command
couldn’t let that happen.
When I arrived by bus ride to Manila, I was very much
a beat down human being, and also a piece of putty that
was easially bendable.
I sat accross the table from a LCDR and he was telling
me all about the Undesirable Discharge that I was going
to recieve, sort of snickering at me,  I just wanted out.
Then he left,  and a young man entered the room with
his hand extended and smileing at me and said to me
that everything that that officer had just told me was
a big fat lie and that he was a lawyer and that
Congressman Long of MD had asked him to look out after
me and that there was no way that the USN could get away
with giving me a REASONS OF UNFITNESS undesirable
discharge, that I had made 2nd Class Petty Officer
in record time and that I was going to San Franscico
to get an Honorable Discharge.
Well, the USN did do that….except , after they
did this,  and behind my back, sent my record to the
BCNR and had it changed to REASONS OF UNFITNESS, and
downgraded it to General Discharge. I didn’t know about
this nor was I concerned for I was still dazed from
a year and a half of the BEEN H.A.D. program
Humiliation,  Alienation,  and Depravation
all designed to intsill shame in me so I could never talk
about my experience
It worked,  I discussed my Naval Experience with no one
Not my father, not my mother, not my wife, not my siblings
not a fucking soul until two years ago when I could no
longer hold it in.
My father tried to retrieve my service record for
a year after my discharge, even the help of Congressman
Long could not get it released.
I floundered along until 1977 until I somewhat started
putting one foot in front of another.
I never understood the SHAME that they had instilled in
me until I recieved my service record in Sep 2008.
I had started investigating in early 2007.  I could never
get my record released all those those years.
If you could read through it you would understand.
It is nothing but provable fabrications and lies , all
to the Chief of Naval Personel.

I had three people who told me not to make this
deployment, Rat, my father, and the Supply Officer who
got transferred right before the deployment,  I had
know idea of exactly what was getting put in my service
record, and didn’t find out what the BIG LIE to the
Admiral was until early 2009.
Anyway , the command thought that they would have me
in fetal position by mid July/72,  I was still on my feet
the end of Augest, barly and had contemplated suicide
on several occasions.  They, had found a way to remove
me from Supply and put me in deck dept where I stood
the Mid Night After Lookout Watch every night. Imagine
someone going through a sleep depravation being responsible for the welfare of the ship , sailors and
Marines.  I watched the Carpet Bombing every night, it
was lonely back aft all night long, the Marines were
becoming suspicous of why I was standing the midnight
shift everynight and were getting concerned. Lt. Zumwalt,
the CNO’s son and a Marine who died of Agent Orange
exposure was one of these.  He soon started sending
Marines back aft every hour to see if I was OK.  They
would just yell back “You all right back there sailor”
I would just yell back “I’ll make it”.
My mail wasn’t leaving the ship, so I wrote a real
desparet letter to my Dad and gave it to Gaskins, a
marine and asked to please send out with the Marine mail
call.  He put it in a envelope and sent it to his house
where it was forwared to my Dad.
I can’t finish right now…....

Another Chapter of “The Story of Rediculous”

I have left many chapters out but to continue with Rat,
I need to set this up. (the title of this story was
passed to Capitol Hill six months before Bill Maher had
his movie Religulous)

The command didn’t hardly wait until the mooring lines
were off before they started their harassment of me.
They took me to a Captain’s Mast NJP for which I still
don’t quite understand what the charges were. This is
when the sleep depravation started.  I was working an all
night shift in Supply.
The Supply Officer, before he departed, which was right
before the deployment also tried to talk me into going
UA. He told that he was leaving and could not protect me
anymore.  If it weren’t for LTJG Smith my whole story
would be unprovable, he stacked enough in my service
record to debunk the Command’s BIG LIE to the Admiral
about me.  He was a really good man.  He had taken to me
while I was still a watch supervisor in Radio.  Suppy
Dept sent and recieved more messages than all other depts
together. You didn’t have to track him down to route his
messages, he was the only other officer outside OPS dept
cleared to enter radiocentral and he would appear there
at just the right times.  After the BIG LIE, he requested
from the Executive Officer to have me put into the Supply
Dept.  There , for a year he fended off the 28B discharge
the command was trying to railroad me out on.  They had
to , to make me appear unbeliebable and them believable.
Along with the depravation, it became unwritten law
on the ship for no one to talk or assosiate with me. Rat
is the only one on the ship that wouldn’t go along with this.  By the end of May , it had become very obvious that
the cast needed to come off Rat’s leg, and against orders
we removed it in the middle of the night and saw the gang
green.. Rat was denied, denied, and denied again to see
a doctor or to get airlifted to a hospital.  I didn’t
know about the BIG LIE they had told the Admiral, Jun 71,
the Supply Officer eluded to it before he left but told
me that some day it would add up and that BUPERS
(Bureau of Naval Personnel) had not believed the what the
command had told them about me and had asked the command
to release me for transfer since it just looked like a
personallity conflict.  The command couldn’t do this
because it would have exposed their lie.
In June/72,  after almost three months in Nam , we were
to be in Philipines for one day and one night to load
supplies, then go straight back the Gulf of Tonkin.
Rat was the most moral inspiring personallity on the ship
and everyone like him.. by this time he couldn’t even
walk and the tears of pain were in his eyes 24/7. A
few sailors decided they were going to get him to the
hospital while we were in the Philiipines. After dark
they smuggled down the mooring lines (I won’t give the
names up of who they were) and one of them drove him
to the Naval Hospital were they operated on him immediatly
to remove the gang green, the doctor told him that he
would have had to amputate the whole leg if he had waited
just one or two more days. He was then transfered to
Bethesda Naval Hospital where he recieved a full knee
reconstructive operation, very new technology back then.
AND I WAS LEFT AND NOW WITH NO ONE TO HELP ME
AND STILL DOING THE SLEEP DEPRAVATION.
The ship did pull a couple of short liberty calls during
this time for the Marines and Sailors,  I wasn’ allowed
off the ship,  by now they had rammed two more Captain’s
Mast NJPs on me for things that I still don’t understand
or were guilty of. Still no sleep.  Couldn’t hide, had
me mustering and signing the MAA log 7am, 12noon,
1800hours in evenint and at taps and then working my
regular all night shift.  Complete alienation, restriction
and depravation…...I sure missed Rat and spent a lot
of time with me own tears, and tears, but no one ever saw
them.

Offersince,

Enjoyed the Rat story, but what is with the “bite me” comment? Not my fault you were a squid!

I worked with squids when I was in the service and even some of my best friends where squids! I just did not like those 13 button outfits you guys had to wear plus I get seasick.

Last time I went to the farmers market, I happened to meet an old friend I know who had been the Navy! ( though, I never held it against him).

So I approached the accordionist who happed to be providing music for the farmers market that day.  I pointed to my friend and told the accordionist, it was my friend Toms birthday and he had been in the Marine Corps and would love to hear the Marine Corps Hymn!

So after throwing five bucks in the accordionist’s tip case, the accordionist announced his gratitude and pointed to Tom announcing great Toms service to our country in the Marine Corps and played one of my favorite songs!

So, Offersince, “from the Halls of Montezuma to you”!

Anyway you should be giving Rico a bad time, he probably was in the Air Force, (though his avatar reminds me of “Love Boat”)  plus I believe we are totally off topic and some people do not like off topic, and even some people complain about off topic, by propagating insults!

In late February , 1972,  the ship that I was assigned
to beat every ship in “flag football” (without pads, and
almost like tackle football) at the Long Beach Naval
Station,  beat every ship from the San Diego Naval Station
and beat the all star Marine foot ball team from Camp
Pendelton.  I wasn’t on it , for the command at this
point wasn’t being so nice to me.
It was a remarkable feat,  for we were a small ship
in terms of manpower, an LST designed to transport and
land troops and equipment, the crew , about three hundred.
They beat aircraft carries, cruisers, destroyers, other
amphibious craft.
There was a good reason for this, we only needed four
players,  Ens Cervini, an osc grad built like an Italian
Stallion that had played at the Ivy school he had attended
Had Petey,  A black man built the same who had played
division I at LSU, bunged his knee enough to lose a
scholarship but not enough to keep him from the service.
My friend Robby, a black dude from Oakland California who
could make one handed grabs.
But our biggest weapon was my closest friend at the time
MIKE RATLIFF.  As quarterback, he could dart a football
with as much velocity and accuracy as any NFL player today
He also had played a little DivII college ball but had
got married out of necessity right after high school.
Was only 5’8”, so divI was out.
Mike worked in radio, he reported aboard the month after
the BIG LIE so I never did work with him. Anyway in the
championship game with the Marines, he bunged his knee,
taken to the LB Naval Hosp. where a straight legged cast
was put on his leg from his hips to his toes.
We were ordered to leave on a one year tour of Nam,
Mar 31st.  At that point , Mike had not had a follow up
visit with a docter and had been in the cast for a month.
They command as of 24hrs before ships movement had not
got him a temporary transfer until his leg was healed.
I asked the Comm Off.about this and the Officer told him
his was coming on this rolly polly LST to Nam with everyone else, cast and all. Mike’s main job was routing
msges(he never made much rank, didn’t care too) up and
down straght vertical ladders all day long and into the
night. (P.S. I am not supposed to tell this story).
The night before we were to leave Mike told me that he
couldn’t do it, was missing ships movement and turning
himself in to the LB Naval Base athorities 24 hrs after
the ship departed.  He asked me to go UA with him, for
he knew well that it was not going to be an easy trip for
me.  My father had asked me not to go on this last voyage
also. (He really begged me not to)  I told Mike what I
had told my Dad,  that I had over three years in and was
going to finish my enlistment. Mike still had two and a
half years to go. He didn’t go and I did. He turned him
self in after we left. Communications was always short
and the command had the NB fly Mike to Hawaii to meet the
ship. They did and Rat was waiting on us cast and all and
still hadn’t seen another docter.
The command was really punishing Mike for not alienating
from me as they had asked all of my former radio friends
to do, and they did about a month before this deployment.
So here is Rat , cast and all , routing the messeges
on the ship and his knee deteriorating more every day, the
command not allowing the one corpman we had to remove the
cast.  Rat would come to me in the middle of the night
with a cold sweat of pain and tears in his eyes and I
would do my best to comfort him. By the end of May, I
nor Rat could take it anymore and we removed the cast
gang green had set in.  He asked to be transferred and
was denied, we were in Nam now, they wouldn’t airlift him.  END OF PART ONE   THE MIKE RATLIFF NAVAL STORY

Clyde says she is making him look at this stuff every time he drives by on his Harley and it annoys him because he does not want to have look at them. Clyde says he wants to enjoy his ride down the road like everyone else and she ruins it for him.

I told Clyde, “Clyde, the problem seems to be you…... not here lawn ornaments”

I told Clyde, Look at my front lawn, I have Freddy Monza my 1953 Chevy on the lawn and the 53 GMC pickup with my Dump truck engine in the back of it, then there is the old sofa with engine parts spread on newspapers and the old yellow school bus sitting out there with Billy the goat and the chickens living in it. Some people have complained about the the big pile of Kitty litter; especially after a rain; next to my dump truck, guess those are kind of like my lawn ornaments,  I suppose it may piss of some people who drive by,  I know it pissed off the Honda Prissy folks who live down the road, because I think it was them who called the county guy on me.

Clyde is kind of short and I am not much taller, but maybe Clyde finds Dwarfs as lawn Ornaments annoying only because they are almost as tall as he is, but I just do not understand why he gets all aggregated over the Pink Flamingos?

Shows you how powerful money is Rico…

Dennis Sexton of Wellington, Texas,  had been my
best friend.  I took him right out of Boot Camp, with
NO “A” school training and taught him enough that he
went on to become a leading radiomen.
I taught him everything that I knew, he still wasn’t
as good as me though, few were Rico, that is why I
had to stand so many long watches..
The Officers, whenever they had a Priority casualty
report always brought them to me to get out,  they always
sent the new radiomen to my watch section to get trained.
And because, I was the only one on the ship that could
copy code,  I was often sent up to help the Signalmen
out when they were short handed, but this did not relieve
me of my radio duties, just something extra.
I was recommended and had all my requirements filled out
for 2nd Class way before I had the time to sew it on.

Hey Rico, not so sauve as you think you are,
since you seem so interested in my accomplishments, here
is another.

I am the one, that was woke up at 11:45 hours, by
radioman Dennis Sexton , of Wellington, Texas, after just
hitting the rack at 7:30 hours , after just having stood
my second 20 hr watch in a row.  And told by this radiomean that worked for me in my watch section, that
radio had dropped the fleet broadcast at 8:00 hours, and
the ship had been dead in the water without communications
since then and that the Captain was only giving the
Operations Officer fifteen more minutes to solve the
problem and then he was going to have to send a message to
his boss telling him that he couldn’t copy the fleet
broadcast, which would have pulled him from his command
immediately.
And immediately , upon being woke up knew what the
probable cause was ......wrong CRYPTO assignments when
we crossed into the Seventh Fleet right after I got off
of watch….So I told Dennis Sexton, to run up to radio
and tell them not to send this message that I believed
that i could solve the problem
So when I did promptly get up to radiocentral, I found
the Operations Officer, The Commuications Officer, the
RMC, and every other radioman on the ship standing around
with their thumb stuck you know where not knowing how to
restore the fleet broadcast,  So I produced the messege
that I had personally routed four months earlier, that
had been signed by the following people…
the Commanding Officer
The Executive Officer
The Operations Officer
The Communications Officer
The Chief Radioman Officer
The First Class Petty Officer in charge of us Watch Supvs.
And in just minutes the fleet broadcast was restored.

And on the Trip to Viet Nam before this one.  ,,,
I set the seventh fleet record for response time,
set up because, to many radiomen were not carefully
and in a timely manner responding to messages sent out
on the fleet broadcast,  so the Commander in Chief of
the Pacific Fleet started pulling little tricks to see
how fast the radiomen could respond,,,
I set the record, my watch section Rico.

Do you believe that I was awarded for these ACCOMPLISHMENTS RICO?
No,  the Captain got forcefully retired because he could
not hide the fact that he had dropped the fleet broadcast
for three and one half hours,,,  and the RMC also took
it personnally.
I just thought that I was doing my Job Rico….
This led to a year and a half of persecution that ended
with a five month full and recorded sleep depravation
in Viet Nam that I just barely escaped by a few hours
from being sent to a prison camp in Saigon…by
a Congressman Long of Maryland….They were trying to
kill me Rico…...came damn close,  a few Marines saved
my ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, ofer:

I spent all day feeling bad about sounding like a bully towards you and, as gerard has noted below, wasting valuable thread space. But you threw more bait my way, and, like an addict, I can’t resist. And so herewith, my last string of insults before I move on:

“it is more fun to read posts like yours
and Ardee’s that displays so much ignorance about the
current events of the last forty years in America.” Please quote for me one post of mine that displays such ignorance.

Why, yes, academic accomplishment is important. Why do the vast majority of people all over the world crave an education? Why did slaveholders want to deny slaves an education if it wasn’t important?

Why do you think being second in a sixth grade popularity contest is more worthy of mention than, say, where you attended university? What did I say to make you think I am more educated than you? And where DID you get your degree? What did you study?

Show me any quote on any post of mine where I said I like Rush. I think he’s a buffoon.

Why didn’t you answer my question about your tenure on Senator Sarbanes’ staff?

“In 1985,  I changed the way the National Security
Agency questioned suspects if they were terrorists.
They thanked me for this…” Really?! Why don’t you be elaborate? (Did you actually work for the Reagan Administration?!)

I never belittled your use of a cycle. Good for you. Good exercise. I merely stated that crashing a motorcycle into a bus does not qualify as a resume enhancer.

Finally, I almost erased this whole post when I reread this:

“It is hard living and being employed inside the box
when you think and operate outside the box, which had
everything to do with my migration.”

But, being a conservative troglodite, I can’t resist this last cruelty:

I bet, given your Eastern Shore history, that you are still a resident of the DC area. Specifically, St Elizabeth’s Hospital. I hope you return to health soon.

I was rewarding.  Continued using a cycle, maybe not
as primary source since I had family.

The summer of 1987,  I cycled from my home in a little

transportation.  It was twenty five miles each way.
It took an hour and a half in the morning and two hours

Ardee,

Personally being used to cat droppings, only because I have forty black cats in my house, crossing my path to prove a point and for good luck like the ladders surrounding my house. Must admit cleaning out the litter box sometimes can become quite a choir, lucky I happen to own a dump truck.  Anyway, it is not so bad;  I just pretend I am an opportunist panning or sifting for gold.

How many times I have discovered other posters comments so annoying I could count on Ardees 12 toes, times many, but occasionally even the most annoying posters write something attempting to resemble an idea, proposing an opinion without ego or even the occasional showing of logic.

I look at Offersince73 comments as something like a glimmer photographer using rapid fire flash shots of not so beautiful women stepping out of a closet, resulting in some of Offeresince’s work turning out very well stated and some not so well said.  Of course always depending on my agreement.

Would it be safely stated most posters on TD would agree on more ideas than not?  Offersince offers what quite often appears to be static, but many times there are nuggets worthy of reflection. Of course this is only my opinion.

Thats just funny,  however,,  I am interested in

my black girl friend would also like to know about this.

I strongly believe this to be yet another in a seemingly endless series of lies this person inflicts upon this forum . If it were true he would never, ever have posted the stupidity that engendered this dialogue in the first place.

Having broken the golden rule of never reading, thus not having to respond to the deep dark and messy place between that fools ears, I will now return to what he deserves, completely ignoring his multiplicities of nonsense and irrelevancies. I will certainlly work harder to turbo scroll past the ten or twelve litterings and cat droppings he perpetuates upon us all in each and every thread.

For Mr. Ellis who posted this dubious and poorly thought out liturgy:

But because Ardee thinks it shameful to be dumb, that smarter people are better then those who are dumb, he has been brainwashed by the rich into promoting bigotry.

I know not where you got that impression but there are many forms of “dumb”, inability to speak being chief among them. The only form of “dumbness” I might be rather critical of is the refusal to attempt to learn, whether from books or from life experience. That might be stupidity rather than “dumbness”.

I have never and would never look down upon someone whose education was limited, either by choice or by chance. I think ,frankly, that your impression of my words is pretty damn dumb though, stupid even.

What do these comments portray?  A lot of anger.
A lot of sadness. A lot of blame.  A lot of confusion.  Some struggling to find ways to change for the better. Lack of energy and ability to act (probably much of it due to the age of people who comment). Some hope and encouragement.  Some confidence in people’s ability to cooperate, but not enough (according to my opinion). Quite a bit of repetitive religious palaver. An eagerness to be noticed.  A lot of need to share personal experiences. An urge to find entertainment. Other?
On the whole, mostly healthy venting. I’m curious to know how far it goes, and to whom—besides to the usual suspects.

Seriously though (Not wishing to appear elitist,) I have to say I find these comments to be mildly entertaining. Picking up on Clarence’s “stupidity enshrined” the
Senate ‘skew’ works out to 44 Democrats representing
59.6 million people while 55 Republicans represent 57.6
million people.

And the ‘set a precedent’ thing probably refers to the
statement made by a pro-voter in the Court that ended
up making George president.  Rephrased, this is a
special case and by no means does this ruling set a
precedent or will it apply to any future case should it
come before the Court.

Missed that one at first, but now you have my attention. Please allow me to parse that quote.

1. The girls in your sixth grade class kept a list ranking boyfriends. (Now that’s just weird.)

2. The “girls boyfriend list that would later go on to become…”(I thought a real person held such a position.)

You still cherish the memory of being number two in a sixth grade popularity contest? (That’s VERY disturbing.)

I’ll take your word for all amateur athletic feats you’ve performed, all the upscale social events you’ve watched, the menial jobs you’ve held, your questionable motorcycling skills, and your apprentice mechanics’ skills (you won’t need to oversize the hole, just drill out the old bolt very carefully and retap the threads.)

But I’m not sure I’m biting on the Sarbanes gig. The source of my doubt stems from your lack of command of the language, evidenced by the grammatical, syntactic and logical sloppiness of your posts. No one with the sophistication and self-regard required to become a US Senator’s Chief of Staff would allow himself to post such drivel.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have this nagging feeling that sixth grade is as far as you got.

Stupidity enshrined, and it’s called (all genuflect) “Democracy”?

A senator from Wyoming has the same vote as a senator from California.

Depending on the who the Vice President is, 40 or 41 can stop anything that the other 60 senators and the majority of the House of Reps wants to do.

One(!) senator can block the confirmation of any presidential nominee to any post that requires Senate approval.

Corporations are as free to contribute millions of dollars to the Congress Critters whom they feel best represent them as are poor people.

Oh, And lest we forget, five guys can say, “Don’t count any more votes, the interests of our guy will be irreparably harmed if the count continues.  And, by the way, this is a special case, so if sometime in the future things are going the other way, this doesn’t set a precedent.”
