The Party of Righteous IndignationPosted on Jun 9, 2011By Joe Conason Grossly distasteful may be the most dignified way to describe the behavior of Rep. Anthony Weiner, but it is impossible to discuss what he has confessed to doing without words like crazy, predatory, repulsive, irresponsible and immature. If he hopes to preserve his sanity and his marriage, he might well consider abandoning politics for psychiatric care. Without professional help, he will never recover from the narcissism that has warped him and injured everyone close to him. Bright as he is, Weiner appears to have believed quite stupidly that his online misconduct could remain concealed. To those who have observed the New York Democrat for years, his callowness and arrogance have been no secret. Those obvious defects were balanced by his political instincts, dogged liberalism and sheer capacity for the hard work of public life—until now. He hasn’t changed and he won’t go without a struggle. It is hard to imagine that Weiner could reject the growing bipartisan demands for his resignation without the quiet support of his wife, Huma Abedin. Those who know her well are universally admiring. But it is still harder to imagine any elected Democrat joining her in an endorsement of another term in Congress for him—especially given the evidence that he committed some of these acts during the first year of their marriage, even after learning that she is pregnant. Let’s hope that we will soon be able to dismiss this distracting scandal, at least for a while. Weiner is actually a very minor figure in Washington; neither his salvation nor his doom can solve the real problems that the nation confronts. He cannot escape the growing disgust of his district’s constituents, the obvious anger of his party’s leaders or the eventual judgment of the House Committee on Ethics. Which brings us to the difference between Democrats and Republicans whenever scandal erupts. Republicans present themselves as the party of moral rectitude; Democrats present themselves as the party of modern tolerance. But in fact, congressional Democratic leaders are far less tolerant of corruption in their own ranks than their opponents, whose tacit acceptance of all brands of turpitude is boggling. Advertisement Most Republican politicians have shown the same nonchalant attitude toward Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, who finally stepped down while awaiting a Senate Ethics Committee report that he must have known would recommend a federal criminal probe of $96,000 in payoffs to his former mistress and her family. The Justice Department may reopen its investigation of Ensign, but his party let him stay in office as long as he liked. The Senate report reveals that Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., a loud voice of the religious right, conspired to help Ensign hush up the affair with his staffer, including millions of dollars in secret payments from his family trust. Coburn’s role may have been felonious, but don’t expect the Senate Republican leadership to complain about him. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader and former speaker, immediately urged the Ethics Committee to pursue Weiner’s offenses. Other Democratic leaders have already said that Weiner should step down. As New York Times blogger Nate Silver suggests, Democratic leaders in his home state may well decide to erase him in redistricting. His odds of surviving politically would be greater if only he were on the other side of the aisle, in the party of righteous (and phony) indignation. © 2011 CREATORS.COM New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. {His odds of surviving politically would be greater if only he were on the other side of the aisle, in the party of righteous (and phony) indignation.}
Weiner should fall on his sword, walk away and get the help he needs.
Hillary will then make sure, at the appropriate time, that he finds a place somewhere in the Dem-party. He’s a progressive and this nation is too short of his kind to condemn them to eternal political damnation.
Politicians love the adulation of celebrity status but some like to leverage it to a personal and or sexual advantage. Bizarrely, we call that “success” in America ... until it is splashed all over the headlines.
Just ask Billy-boy Clinton, since resurrected from the politically dead.

Weiner’s mistake was not that he did what Rethugs did, but that he documented it. In this digital age, we were bombarded with his narcissistic sexts, pics and tweets. Vitter didn’t have pictures to titilate the press with. Weiner has made himself a laughingstock by acting like a 7th grade boy, while Vitter, who actually committed a crime, gets away with it because there were no pictures….and everybody in his circle does it.

If the Republican Party was to weed out all the criminals, perverts, party animals, prostitute afficianados and full-frontal liars, the only one left in the room would be the janitor. I can’t say much different about their competition, but I can say that when a Democrat’s indiscretions come to the fore, the Republicans make damn sure they stay in the news forever.

Had a flash vision this morning of Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, et al, holding the leash of Pelosi, Reid, an now Wasserman, and others like dogs at a bear baiting event, with Weiner as the bear. Would make a great cartoon, the visual is perfect for what is going on here. Since when do the Dems participate in rabid “guilty until proven innocent” nonsense. Let Weiner’s constituents decide his fate; his wife has already decided. Beyond that, unless laws were broken, which so far has not shown to be the case people need to concentrate on the real issues like saving us from the Republicans. I’m taking names on this issue with Dems who are being Repub. shills. I will not be giving them any campaign money because it is clear to me they don’t have a grasp of what is important here.

If Tony ‘Tiny’ Weiner is granted a congressional leave of absence while he goes into ‘rehab’ in an attempt to cure the psychosis that prompts his apparently insatiable need for genital exhibitionism, it would seem only fair that the entire Congress be granted an indefinite leave of absence to obtain psychiatric help.
Just to see if it’s possible to cure, or at least alleviate, the congressional propensity for continuous masturbation, 24/7/365, which is an at least as obnoxious display as Tiny’s relatively modest cock-shots.
And even if Congress cannot be cured by lying around in a ‘rehab’ center, swilling margaritas and smoking dope at poolside, while practicing keeping their hands out of their own and each others’ pants and panties, the interim of their absence will provide a welcome respite for the US citizenry from having to watch, and be the victims of, their normal three-ring absurdities.

Republicans do not just display a ‘Tacit acceptance of all brands of turpitude’. Indulgence in all brands of turpitude is a requisite for GOPer membership, as part of their ‘You gotta go along to get along’ credo. Public displays of abject perversions are required of aspiring new members during the republican party initiation rites, to permit blackmail coercion to adhere to GOPer policies, should future members ever exhibit signs of rationality, morality, or serving the public’s interests, thus deviating from the GOPer ‘Crooked and Wide’ path.

Call it what it is: corporate fascism. Their media employees/clowns will be the last ones to rock the boat/report what’s important. Their bosses will punish them. This is a very sad song throughout human history, and it always has a very sad/bad ending.

The US hosts the most profitable porn industry in the world - selling every imaginable product from electic frying pans to dental floss with sex, the implied message being the average Americans knows how to party - as soon as somebody gets caught - and then they mob like a hoard of miss goodie two shoes with pitchforks - what a joke.

Weaner’s escapades seems to have been a gift sent from the media gods…. After all how much ... Palin, Bochman and Newt and Tea Bag/Koch Brother crap can one stomach? What war? Who gives a daman about Medicare, surly not the Republicans and I am not sure about the Democrats?
Seeing such Moral high ground as portrayed by people like Andrew Breitbart brings a tear to me eye, the fact that Andrew Bereitbart refused to expose the wenier, weiner picture shows that Bereitbart is a man above, the normal crassness of other Republicans. Bereitbart should become the poster boy and moral compass for our society. His display of the proper way to blackmail without calling for money, was a refreshing from the usual, the old asking for money blackmail thing.
Bereitbart shows an exceptional political savvy exceeding what most Repulicans pass for smarts. I hope to see more people with integrity such as Bereitart exposing things and going into politics under the Repulsion or Tea Bag ticket.
A few other people who happen to show integrity and morals of the higher pain, crawling out of the woodwork on the Repulsion ticket,...people like Palin, Bochman or Newt, so far the whole Repulican cast,... fighting for the people, the huddled masses out there suffering with the people, for surly Repulicans portray the highest of highground and expose the Democrats for their weak character of compassion.
We need more people showing the quality of being, the honesty and morally uprightness as Andrew Bereitbart has. Touching our lives and Televisions (but only after applying copious amounts of antiseptic), displaying their pathetic so called reality.

I’m more sick of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and others in the Democratic party dancing like puppets on a string to the Republican tune. We’ve got much bigger problems than Anthony Weiner and frankly he handled his apology better than some of our Democratic leaders handled their a—kissing of the Republiicn line. He was stupid, but his constituents and his wife will deal with him as they want. The rest of us need to get back to work saving ourselves from the Republican “Ayn"scum that’s trying to steal everything we have and make us into slaves the the monied elite.

The screeching, whining and self-righteous attacks were never about Anthony
Weiner’s tweets. The noise was to take attention away from Clarence Thomas.
http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8561 Thomas, unlike Rep. Anthony Weiner, appears to have actually,
and flagrantly, and repeatedly, broken the law.
Connecting the dots, it would seem the couple made huge profits from Thomas’ participation and insider knowledge of last year’s Citizens United ruling at the U.S. Supreme Court, as we’ll show you below.
While Barack Obama’s DoJ seems to be looking the other way, there was one person in Congress trying to bring attention to this issue last week with his ConflictedClarence.com website: Rep. Anthony Weiner!

Don’t get me wrong, what Wiener did was absolutely insane. Why identify
yourself in a lewd context to people you don’t even know? His emails and pics
reveal an immature sex addict who is easy to set up for exposure. And, yes, I
do believe many of those women who kept pressing Wiener to come see them
were hired help. He proved to be an easy mark.
That said, do I think he should quit? No. Isn’t it strange how Democrats eat
their own, so frightened of losing power? And they let the Republicans, whose
politicians seem to weather and even thrive despite the crimes committed,
taunt them into doing so. Wiener didn’t break any laws and much of this is
personal. If he stays in office, he has an opportunity to learn a lesson and work
hard to redeem himself with both his colleagues and, more important, his wife.
I’d show him a little sympathy. He’s been humiliated all over the planet. That

Especially in the media, including the Internet, and including many of the contributions of both (supposedly progressive) columnists and commenters here on Truthdig.
It’s a way of putting people down, of getting the better of them, in a way of carrying on war, which leads often enough to real wars, violence, terror. When you want to destroy people, you first make them out to be evil.
It’s also unutterably tedious. Weiner sending around a picture of his wiener was irresistibly funny to the tabloids, but now that the humor of that has worn thin, I suppose the grinding of the wheels of serious moralization must be started up.

First off, one of the appalling things to come about
due to Weiner’s transgressions is the pall of
validity now given to Breitbart’s bullshit. As if the
media didn’t already give him a pass, allowing him to
represent himself as a “journalist”. ugh.
But Steve Benen points out what is really behind the
Report thisvast gulf of accountability between Dems and Reps.
The MSM itself just refuses to report on these types
of peccadilloes unless it’s a Democrat. When asked
about it, at least in Mr. Benen’s instance, the MSM
talking head says that it’s because the Dems don’t
push the issue as relentlessly as teh Republicans do.
But it’s banging your head against the wall, if you
announce the facts, and the News Media just ignores
you. What else do they expect the Dems to do? What a
load of crap.

It seems obvious to me that righteous indignation is a characteristic universally present among Americans. Our present foreign policy reveals this arrogance clearly. We are forever finger-shaking, all too quick to take offense, and refuse to admit our historical exploitative nature as we ravage the world’s resources. By keeping most of the profits within our own precincts to be wasted on imperialistic wars, we scorn the needs of our own working class, and overlook the starvation and disease of millions of people in poor countries whom, quite apparently, we do not regard as worth saving.
Report thisWe hold grudges, and resist efforts to take up equal partnerships in the world, but instead insist that we are so virtuous that others harbor desires to attack us, not because of our domineering behavior, but “because they envy our freedom, or our wealth etc.” We insist on managing internatioinal affairs by a constant show of overwhelming military power, establishing hundreds of bases all over the planet with the express purpose of airing our superiority.
Righteous indignation is a hallmark of the extreme right wing,(lauded as “pPetriotism”) but it appears as well among the Democrats, and the evidence is the creeping pace of change in spite of easy access to a wealth of information and evidence that America is generally resented, hated and envied throughout the world—a not-enviable reputation if we truly want to do anything good anywhere.
