The Coming MiscegeNation?

By Marcia Alesan Dawkins

It’s official. We’re a “miscegeNation.” The 2010 Census results are reminding us that multiracialism is not only our destiny but our reality. We’re seeing the rise of the most diverse cohort of youth in the nation’s history with a record low white population—the millennials. According to The New York Times, “Young Americans are far less white than older generations, a shift that demographers say creates a culture gap with far-reaching political and social consequences.”

Perhaps no popular culture image provides a more accurate snapshot of this shift better than the “Mix 2Gether” commercial for Activision’s DJ Hero 2 video game. Released in October, the commercial features interracial partygoers who “mix it up” interpersonally and sexually—by sharing birthmarks, braces, tattoos, skin tones, body parts and affection. These images suggest that the time for multiracialism is now. That multiracialism is young. That it is reflected best on bodies and in media. And, important, that it is marked by an absence of face-to-face dialogue.

Does today’s focus on multiracialism mean that we’re finally seeing the end of racism? Or does it mean that racism has simply gone underground?

The answer depends largely on talking and to whom we talk. Many would like to believe that our comfort with categorizing people as multiracial has erased racism and the stigma of interracial relations. Here is a perfect example: In defending herself and the tea party against the NAACP’s charges of racism, Sarah Palin calls on her own multiracial family as evidence in a Facebook post titled “The Charge of Racism: It’s Time to Bury the Divisive Politics of the Past”:

“I just spent a few beautiful Alaskan days with some beautiful Americans in my husband’s birthplace—they are Todd’s family and they are Yupik Eskimo. In the decades that our families have blended, I have never heard one proud, patriotic member judge another member based on skin color. … Being with our diverse family in a melting pot that is a Native village just days ago reminded me … that [it is foreign to us to consider condemning or condoning anyone’s actions based on race].”

Translation: Multiracial families bestow the skill of racial reconciliation that will result in the end of racism. What is more, multiracial families can even promote the end of race. Palin is not the only one who expresses such views. The politically correct lip service that says that multiracial individuals and families are not racist and naturally racially progressive abounds in the press and blogosphere.

This sexy-but-flawed way of thinking is based totally on appearances. Because of our nation’s history of slavery, segregation and interment, racism is conflated with physical racial separation. As a consequence racial progress is conflated with racial mixing. Multiracial individuals and interracial families are touted as icons of racial healing because they are thought to have special insights based on what they are—mixed. In his 2008 “A More Perfect Union” speech, President Obama addressed how absurd this kind of thinking is. He said that his grandmother “once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.” The president also implied that the idea of multiracials ending racism ignores the fact that interracial romantic relationships still experience higher rates of failure and divorce than same-sex relationships (i.e., his own parents’ divorce; Halle Berry’s and Gabriel Aubry’s custody battle over their daughter, Nahla).

If we still think that being multiracial or being part of a multiracial family automatically ends racism, then we must consider the cases of Lawrence Dennis and Leo Felton. Dennis, the multiracial right-wing fascist, was charged with sedition for allegedly seeking to establish a Nazi regime in the U.S. during World War II. Felton, a multiracial white supremacist, was convicted of bank robbery and plotting to blow up Jewish and African-American landmarks around Boston. The child of an interracial couple, Felton wrote a letter in which he criticized his parents and said he is “an unrepentant enemy of the multicultural myth.” Multiracial backgrounds did not encourage these men to become racial healers.

As strange as it might sound, today’s fascination with appearances and with multiracial identities may prove to be tragically more effective at hiding racism than healing it. Rather than attending only to increasingly diverse appearances, we should pay attention to what’s going on beneath the surface—in people’s hearts and minds and, equally important, in public policies these hearts and minds create. For it is there that we can win the battle against racism’s increasingly pernicious and colorblind qualities.

Interracial marriage is always a sign of “race relations” getting better and the stigma against “race mixing” being lifted. I’m sick of idiots who try a hypocritical way of denouncing multiracial identity by claiming that interracial marriages have “failed” to eliminate “racism.” If perfection is your standard, then there were no successful political movements in history. Interracial marriages are not a political movement but a sign that other movements (Civil Rights, Multiracial Movement, etc.) have achieved significant success.

Article seems out of place especially in the month of February were we are forced
to observe Black history month, the most racist of all insinuations.  Where is the
white month, where is the jewish month?  Why only a month.  Until we start
thinking of each other as all one and stop the forced individual identity, racism will
continue.  By singling out a race, it remains a target for abuse and a method to be
exploited, a la, Jackson, Quanel X, Al Sharpton, et al, for personal gain.

MA: it is a sin that EXTREMIST white people consider God only made white people to inherit and rule the earth.

Because, in their ignorance, they also believe the myth about mankind’s creation “in his image” (meaning God).

It is amazing what humans will invent to explain their animal superiority. When, in fact, paleontologists have shown conclusive evidence that we are descendants in a very long lineage that reaches back to the savannas of Africa.

The freedom of Religious faith, yes, must be protected. But it becomes dogma when we advance the hypothesis that God exists and the state must take into account “his commandments”.

Even our founding fathers, who believed in God, saw the damage done by a state religions in Europe and the monarchies established by Divine Right. Which is why they did not institute one in the US. After all, they could have done so.

They were content to specify that no law would impede belief—again in reference to religious prosecution that many (of their religion) had suffered in Europe.

Are we not, in some instances, inflicting the same suffering on others today?

One thing missing from this article is biology.

Mother Nature has seen fit to instill a natural fear of “the other” in animals, so they can stick together in easily recognizable groups and outlive their predators and competitors (at least long enough to pass on their genes - Mother’s favorite purpose). This innate fear is successfully manipulated by every group that has needed to demonize another group to justify annihilating them - from the Nazis to McCarthyites to militaries everywhere that teach soldiers how to effectively hate the enemy de jour… including the U.S. military, of course.

Discerning differences is part of our set of natural defense mechanisms. To overcome Mother Nature’s plan then, we have to teach ourselves to see all humans as insiders, as family. And from that vantage point we stand to reap great rewards: strength in numbers, more hands to create and solve, sharing of burdens, etc.

To accomplish this, Nature gave us a tremendous capacity for empathy, cooperation and reconciliation. In fact, we share these traits with all apes and many other animals. So, we are not hopelessly bound by our natural tendency to see “others as enemy.” With our creativity (yet another of Mom’s gifts) we can structure our families at will - from a tiny clique of 2 kids in grade school to the human family that includes all people everywhere. So that’s the good news.

The bad news is that humans also have a great capacity for voting against their own best interests; we have to work hard against our natural short-sightedness. This is another defense mechanism Mother Nature provided us (for her favorite purpose). And it explains in part why, as the article suggests, people can KNOW intellectually that getting along with each other is beneficial to all, but continue to harbor deep-seated, emotionally forged prejudices that push them to act against this knowledge.

I agree with Dawkins’ conclusion, that just because we have inter-racial partners or multi-racial families does not mean we will be free of racism, as individuals or as a nation. All I’m saying is, it ain’t easy being human. We have a lot of baggage to overcome which was put there so that we could successfully continue our species, but which gets in the way of our being able to create the kind of society that fulfills our social and spiritual potential.

On the other hand, there is Father Time. It could happen - and this is what I see coming down the line - that one day there will be no real identifiable visual differences between people. At that point it should be obviously silly to keep up the false front of racism.

Then all we Children will have to disagree about is everything else.

As the complexions of the majority of the kids in public schools has gone from white to brown to black, there has been, and continues to be, less and less willingness by white Americans to fund public education (vouchers?) Republicans want to do away with the Dept. of Education, and return education to state control (remember how well that was handled in the last century?  Mississippi?  Arkansas?)
As the nation ‘colourizes’, more, and more social-control laws are being enacted.  For instance, criminalize people by making everyday behavior a misdemeanor, i.e., to smoke outdoors (see New York), and this gives the police the excuse to take fingerprints on a portable device, enter names into a database, and, generally, terrorize innocent ‘colored’ people all at the same time.
Slap felony convictions for drug addiction on as many ‘colored’ people as possible thus taking away their right to vote, making them ineligible for many jobs, and any type of government assistance, housing, education, health care(?).
After years of the above, the nation will end up with a sliver of wealthy, white elites controlling the brown/black masses either through terror, or by perpetrating a poverty so desperate, that the masses will have to expend all of their time and energy on survival.
What’s especially unfunny is that the iron net will have to be cast so widely, so rigidly, and so relentlessly, that the white middle class, and white poor will inevitably be ensnared in the web as well.

Countries attached to airy-fairy myths of their own creation and exceptionalism always have the need for a strong Jungian shadow.  Blacks have fit the Jungian bill nicely in this country for 400 years, and if all these new shades of brown no longer make black scapegoating convenient, then all that good ol’ American hate and despisal will *have* to be deposited elsewhere.

Prediction:  We’ll go the way of Brazil.  Huge strides in racial tolerance, new and as-yet undiscovered sorting mechanisms—money-driven of course—to serve up a whole new class of untouchables.

Benjamin Creme was asked in January 2004 issue of Share International:
Q. Are there very many reincarnated former Nazis who are in power now, who have fallen to the forces of darkness again, and if so, are they concentrated in any particular part(s) of the world?
A. None of the major figures are in incarnation at this time. There are a large number of reincarnated former Nazi Party members in state or city government in the US, Israel, Eastern Europe and Argentina.

The point is that all of us are souls that do reincarnate.  You can be white one life, black the next and brown after.  You can be male one life and female the next. Your vehicle in a future life can be influenced by the need to experience what you once hated. The more we identify with our soul instead of the transient physical-emotional-mental personality vehicle, the easier it is to see beyond our differences and grow without harsh lessons.  Love and appreciation of unity in diversity is key.

There may be only 2%  “mixed race” Americans by some official counts or by self-
designation, but in the real world 100% of humans are mixed race, because there
are no border to races and never have been. It is an open system. We all have
African ancestors. Skin colour is very deceptive about our racial kinships, only one
characteristic among hundreds that vary genetically from person to person and
group to group.

Palin speaks with shredded tongue. Even her own father on live TV made comment on her. When asked why it took Sarah so many colleges to earn a one year degree, her father answered “she had problems/issues with the ethnic people and other races.” Thank you Oprah for that interview. It is a known fact she is a habitual liar.

The interesting thing about race is that while ordinary people are abandoning the concept in their daily lives and probably their thoughts as well, academics and other intellectuals seem more and more fascinated by it.  For their sakes, perhaps reservations where racial practices could be preserved should be set up in some remote parts of the country.

Using the word mulatto or nigger in mixed company, or otherwise, would, and should have repercussions, just as using certain other words is perceived as being unacceptable in polite conversation. Some object to the word nigger or “Nigga” in any context, while others believe the word is acceptable in certain contexts, and that use of the word builds camaraderie in certain contexts. Using the word “Boo” or “Nigga” is even considered a term of endearment in certain contexts, though these words do bring to mind past and present racist attitudes.

The clinical use of the word mulatto may be acceptable in certain academic contexts, but why use the word, when other designations are less abrasive? The word “Colored,” as in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is no longer acceptable in most contexts, just as the word Negro is no longer acceptable in most contexts. The word Negro is most often used today by comics who are indicating latent racism.

Long before my daughter had mixed race children, in my heart of hearts, and at the core of my intellect, I have believed that mixing of the races is a positive, and will lead to a better future, though I know that my daughter’s children will be subjected to discrimination at present, and not exclusively from white people. I feel safe in assuming that this revelation of mine will elicit anger and annoyance in some. The demand for racial purity has been the demand of history’s greatest villains. I’m not one who believes that the preservation of racial: heritage, culture, and language is at all important, but I do see Black History Month and Black History studies at major Universities as being valuable to the extent that they bring the races together, and do not serve to separate the races.

Rush Limbaugh recently said:

“One of the biggest pet peeves black women have, in recent decades, is black men marrying or pairing up with white women. It just bugs ‘em, particularly if they happen to be blonde. That’s lighting the fuze. There’s already a bomb there but, if the white woman happens to be blonde, that just… They’re taken off the market. Another black guy gone from the marketplace of available men. So the Pepsi ad has a white woman getting decked by a can of Pepsi thrown by a black woman. A homerun if you understand the demographics here.”

This comment is typical Rush, and I believe it’s a despicable comment, but sadly, there may be some truth in the comment.

Never the less, the following comes from Ebony Magazine:

“…The fact is, interracial love and marriage are touching the lives of everyday working Black women. Take a look at the statistics. Government figures confirm that the number of Black women marrying White men is both substantial and growing. According to the U.S. Bureau of Census, in 1987 there were 56,000 Black women married to White men. That’s 11,000 more than were married to White men at the decade’s beginning in 1980…”

From articlesbase.com posted Oct. 14, 2008:

“Today, black women - white men couples are as prevalent as black men - white women couples. This is evident in large cities such as Chicago and New York, Atlanta and Detroit, which have a noticeable and outstanding increase in the number of mixed-race couples.”

“Interracial couples are more noticeable and prominent than ever,” says a Midwest-based author who has observed the changes in the dating trends for about 40 years. “But the recent numbers of Black women being escorted by White men is, well, startling, to say the least.”

“Startling?” The subject of mixing the races is a sensitive one, and will lead to anger and annoyance, but should it? We’ve had black Othello, why not an updated version of “Romeo and Juliet,” preferably without the prejudice, anger, violence and death.

Wouldn’t a black rose smell just as sweet? Are all Valentine hearts red? They come in a variety of colors, and some are sweet chocolate. That being said, I’m not totally free from prejudice; I don’t like the lavender Valentines, they’re a menace.

Interesting article, interesting comments.

I suspect Marcia Dawkins speaks of “race” because this idea is deeply a part of how we see ourselves and our slaveholding legacy. In other cultures the issue is not so much “race” as it is “culture”. Multicultural marriages where couples are constantly called upon to chose one or another cultural practice are known to be fraught with difficulties.

American history books teach that there are five races and 7 continents, that the European continent ends at the Bosphorous, the Caucasus and the Urals. These are mere conventions and a far greater number of people in this world reject the idea of race as a factor of identity and believe the land forms of the worlds are divided into 5 or 6 distinct continents, depending on whether Europe is distinct from Eurasia or whether the Americas for a single continent.

The spatial segregation described in Gulam‘s detailed description of Greensboro, NC, is by far the more critical issue facing our democracies, all fifty of them. Like humans (humans who share an identity trait) will congregate for self-preservation to the detriment of public interest.

Fair and equitable access to public education, sports facilities, public transit, libraries, unbiased internet access and jobs is in the public interest, just as a healthy (read ‘free of health anxieties’) and vibrant (read ‘motivated’) workforce is critical for a smoothly functioning economy. And yet, when enclaves of privilege are allowed to develop to the detriment of public equity, as has been extensively reported in the American press, the very roots of our democratic process are affected. Separate can never be equal!

For an interesting and thought provoking discussion of public equity, see Marcia Dawkins’ article in Truthdig, “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste-except in Ohio” and response, “Poverty and the Media Circus, or when is a circus not entertainment”.

I don’t think it would be good policy to work against people congregating by personal affinity. But it is the state’s duty to ensure that public access to community resources is equitable and not limited by local ad valorem assessments. Vigilance is the responsibility of engaged citizens in every community.

The great irony of Barack Obama’s election is that it seemed to herald the
death throes of racism in this country.  Just the opposite.  It has revealed the
pent up, virulent, insane racism that pervades much of the country, particularly
in the south, midwest, and southwest.  The main driving force behind all the
opposition to Obama has nothing to do with policy, and everything to do with
the refusal by many to accept the concept that a black man could possibly be
qualified for anything higher than dogcatcher - if that.  After all, the only thing
that has ever allowed them to endure the shame of their own inferiority has
been the lingering faith in the notion that black people are even more ignorant
and ineffectual than they are.  If they accept that a black man is qualified to be
the President, then their own status correspondingly sinks into the deepest
slime pits.  They would lynch him, if they could.  Dozens are already likely
stalking him with their rifles, yearning to be the next James Earl Ray.  They
accuse Obama of being a Muslim, a fascist, a Nazi, a socialist, and a non-
citizen.  These are all simply words with which Fox News supplies them to shout
in place of the one they would like to use: “N$%%#R”.  Fox blabbermouth and
Aryan supremacist, Glenn Beck, so eloquently spoke for all these vile Ku Klux
Klan wannabes when he proclaimed Obama the possessor of ...a deep-seated
hatred of white people.”

Recently I looked at a new web site that shows the percentages of the
population by race in every voting district in the USA. I looked at a voting
district in Vermont and sure enough an area where one black friend of mine
lives was coloured to indicate not all white but less than 1% black. Then I found
something remarkable when I looked at a town that I happen to know in the
South: Greensboro, North Carolina.

Many farms on the West side of town were purchased in the depression by a
wealthy Jewish family, and the husband of one of the daughters, a man always
referred to in Greensboro as “Mr. Benjamin,” transformed this land after WWII
into a series of large housing developments. Within each well defined
neighbourhood were houses that fit into a carefully controlled price range. The
subdivision at the top of the social pecking order, in the area with the most
expensive homes, was the neighbourhood with the highest percentage of Jews,
and this was called Starmount Forest. Sternberger was the name of the wealthy
Jewish family who owned the land, and Starmount was the English translation
of their German/Yiddish family name. There is a Sternberger Elementary School,
which is probably the polling site for that voting district.

On the map showing race in various voting districts across America there was
no reference to Jews as a race. They were not mentioned at all. As I expected a
majority of the areas in the county were coloured white on the map, which
meant from 3%-50% black, since the South had in fact moved a long way
toward integration. As was its purpose, these maps showed the extent to which
the nation is still segregated along white-black lines. However, the most
interesting thing about the map was the fact that there were no blacks in
Starmount Forrest at all; it was one of the few totally segregated areas. This
made that area bright red on the map. In this area where the largest number of
wealthy Jews live in Greensboro apparently there was not a single black
resident.

The press, including most progressive and liberal web sites, keeps on pushing
the black-white race issue, even though there is in America less white-black
tension in early 2011 than one might expect, given the incarceration rate for
blacks and their falling employment levels, and given the fact that an
unfortunate percentage of the good jobs generated during the last generation
have gone to white women not to men of colour, further driving apart the races
and the haves from the have nots. This same press never challenges the double
standard on defining Jews as being people of a specific race when it comes to
their right to go to Israel and hold joint citizenship, but never allowing Jews to
be defined as a race at all in the USA. If Jews were defined and marked on maps
the way this is done for whites and blacks and hispanics, then it is highly
probable that we would find the Jews in fact segregate themselves away from
the black population even more consistently and than do most whites. Jewish
commentators have often raised the issue of race, and Jewish directors in
Hollywood and New York have pointed the finger derisively at whites in America
for decades, but information making plain Jewish racism is systematically
avoided if not censored.

This article drops in the obligatory line about a mad racist bomber going after
both Jewish and black targets. There is always the implication in the liberal
press that the Jews are one with black Americans in facing and fighting racism,
but this is a false front presented by the media. The facts on the ground will
not bear this out. I suggest you ask blacks if they think this is real. They will
laugh at you.

The word Mulatto is a no no. Why is this?

One of the strangest things about the election of Obama was that I have never
once seen him referred to as “mulatto.” Why is that word automatically taken as
negative, as racist, when it accurately describes our president, and a large and
growing percentage of the population throughout the Americas? In a sense this is
what all mankind is: “of mixed race.” There are no lines; it is all a fuzzy, somewhat
theoretical construct with only functional (or disfunctional) use as a word.

I ahve dealt with the public intimately for most of my life. While I have not witnessed a change in attitudes concerning race in our older population in the US (on the contrary, since the election of 2008 I have seen a marked increase in racist animocity among our senior and middle aged groups)I have noticed a certain apathy towards the subject of race among americas youth (however my experiences are primarily in the northeast US, some of my brief trips to the south and southwest have shown me that old racist attitudes are alive and well in those regions among all sectors of the populace).

I guess apathy towards race in everyday interactions could be seen by many as a positive developement. I commend the youth of america if that turns out to be the first step towards acceptance and equality. But, in the upper ohio valley I still hear the word “Nigger” in everyday conversation in public places. I guess the only thing that can change some attiitudes is six feet of dirt.

Great piece.  Read an article with a similar sentiment on TheLoop21.com this past week.  Any meaningful discussion about race, including those in interracial reltionships or from multi-ethnic background, needs to start with our own honest, inward reflection.
