The Ayatollah Is Right About One Thing: Nuclear Weapons Are Sinful

Email this item Email    Print this item Print    Share this item... Share

AP / Vahid Salemi

A pro-government Iranian demonstrator holds a poster with photos of the late revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini, right, and supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at an annual demonstration in front of the former U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

By Robert Scheer

Given my own deep prejudice toward religious zealotry, it has not been difficult for me to accept the conventional American view that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme theocratic ruler of Iran, is a dangerous madman never to be trusted with a nuclear weapon. How then to explain his recent seemingly logical and humane religious proclamations on the immorality of nuclear weapons? His statement challenges the acceptance of nuclear war-fighting as an option by every U.S. president since Harry Truman, who, in 1945, ordered the deaths of 185,000 mostly innocent civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

“We do not see any glory, pride or power in the nuclear weapons—quite the opposite,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Tuesday in summarizing the ayatollah’s views. Salehi added, “The production, possession, use or threat of use of nuclear weapons are illegitimate, futile, harmful, dangerous and prohibited as a great sin.”

Of course, the ayatollah’s position will be largely interpreted by the media and politicians in the United States as a devious trick to lull critics, but words of such clarity will not be so easily dismissed by his devout followers. They are words that one wishes our own government would embrace to add moral consistency to our condemnation of other countries we claim might be joining us in holding nuclear arms.

As awkward as it may be to recall, it was the United States that gifted the world with these sinful weapons. And even more to the point of assessing sin, ours is the only nation that has ever used such weapons toward their intended purpose of killing large numbers of the innocent. That fact alone should provoke some measure of humility in responding to Salehi’s offer this week at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva to negotiate a treaty banning nuclear weapons.

Unfortunately, his remarks were all too predictably met with swift condemnation by the United States. Laura E. Kennedy, the American ambassador to the conference, said that Iran’s claim to be opposed to such weapons “stands in sharp contrast” to that nation’s failure to comply with international obligations. But the fact is that the administration she represents has stated that there is as yet no evidence that Iran is committed to building a nuclear bomb.

Square, Site wide
She is right that Iran’s resistance to inspection “is hardly illustrative of a commitment to nuclear disarmament,” but such a remark is grotesquely hypocritical coming from the representative of a nation that has produced more than half of the world’s nuclear arsenal under the most severe conditions of secrecy. It is also true that U.S. acceptance of nuclear weapons in Israel and Pakistan, both of which have been recipients of American military aid despite breaking international nonproliferation codes to which U.S. presidents have long subscribed, is hardly a sign of consistency on this issue.

It is obvious, in a week when the U.S. welcomed North Korea’s renewed commitment to inspections, that even the most recalcitrant of nations can be induced to reason. The treatment of Iran is complicated by this being a U.S. election season, during which the Republican candidates, with the exception of Ron Paul, have been beating the war drums over what they claim is Iran’s nuclear threat. In no way has the GOP’s zeal for military confrontation been chastened by the fact that a similar crusade in 2003 by Republican hawks led to the invasion of Iraq over patently false claims that it was developing a nuclear arsenal. The result was a pro-Iranian government in Baghdad.

Neither Iraq nor Iran had anything to do with the 9/11 attacks that launched our nation on a never-ending and essentially irrational “war on terror.” Irrational, because the terrorist enemy has come to be defined through political convenience rather than through an objective threat assessment. Iran’s Shiite leaders were sworn enemies of Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaida, which was inspired and financed by the Wahhabi Sunnis of Saudi Arabia. Yet when the Obama administration recently concluded a huge, 10-year arms deal with the Saudi kingdom, the top Republican candidates were in full approval.

Of course the world’s people should be alarmed by the prospect of Iran, or any other nation, joining the nuclear weapons club. But demonizing Iran and attempting to further isolate that nation’s leadership hardly advances the cause of nonproliferation. If Washington can find a basis of reasonable accommodation with a bizarrely erratic and paranoid North Korea, serious negotiations with Iran should be eminently possible. A place to begin would be with the acceptance that the justifiably reviled ayatollah might for once be demonstrating moral leadership when he denounces all nuclear weapons, including those in our own massive arsenal, as sinful.

What fears US-Israel the most is that Iran has become the most powerful country in the region which is threatening Israeli status as the “regional bully”.  Rehmat

I would respectfully submit two slight changes to your summary sentence, as follows:
1. The most powerful “sane” country in the region.
2. “- which is threatening Israeli status as the “western world” bully.

Yes, nuclear weapons are ‘Sinful’ in Muslim hands but not in the hands of Muslim-hating Jews, Christians and Hindus.

Iranian president Dr. Ahmadinejad has said on several occasions that Iran doesn’t need nuclear bombs to defend itself as nuclear bombs did not save the US, USSR and Israel from military huliations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon. Iran has also held two International Conferences to create a nuclear-free Middle East.

The real power behind Iranians’ resistance to Israel and its western poodles is in Iran’s concept of asymmetric warfare, the ideological or ‘spiritual’ superiority of the community of believers is considered as important as any other factor.

Iran can cause immense harm, analysts say, without ever directly facing off against far superior conventional US forces. Even a few incidents – like mines laid in the Gulf, or Iran’s small-boat swarming tactics against oil tankers or a US Navy ship – could raise fears of insecurity to unacceptably high levels.

However, Both the US and Israel are not worried about Iran becoming a nuclear power. What fears US-Israel the most is that Iran has become the most powerful country in the region which is threatening Israeli status as the “regional bully”.

“Why America will go to war on the side of Israel against Egypt in a war where Israel was winning and winning big.
And remember, that was 1967 when the Soviet Union was still there and many countries were not friendly to the US.”

It’s pointless to ask me. You would need to ask Robert McNamara and Lyndon Johnson - and they’re dead. The attack on the USS Liberty occurred in the lead up to the war between Israel and Egypt and was yet another crazy false flag idea dreamed up by morons - the same morons who brought you 9/11, followed by Iraq and Afghanistan. Those who claim the American government would never attack its own people are woefully ignorant of how many times they have done just that.

“that was 1967 when the Soviet Union was still there and many countries were not friendly to the US.”

And you think things are different now? Most countries in the world don’t like America. They are afraid of America but that’s not quite the same thing, is it? Dislike of America has now reached epic proportions all over the third world and the west because of 9/11 and the War on Terror and the general tone of lawless disregard for even the most basic level of decency shown by American foreign policy. There’s now barely a scintilla of difference between American foreign policy and a serial killer on a rampage. It’s the old story of ‘Why are you standing on my neck?’  Answer: ‘Because I can.’

“Pre emotive attack is a sign of mad dog demented arrogant insanity and creates 9-11 one way or the other.”  NZDoug

Is there a plan in progress that will “cover” the formal, Israeli leadership, with scapegoats on the ground in Israel, who will “unilaterally” initiate an attack on Iran during their absence?  Whom the puppet major media will immediately scapegoat as “mad dogs”?

Staging the Israeli chiefs of state in the D.C. area, and an army general or two on the ground in Israel who will “unilaterally” launch an attack against Iran, looks neat at first glance.  Such a plan would superficially “cover” the formal, Israeli chiefs of state.  Using the major news media to immediately characterize the puppets in Israel as mad-dog-types, would not erase the horrors of an ttack.  Nor would it prevent the programmed responses of allies of Iranian leadership, which could be disastrous – for the entire world.

Could another 9-11 type debacle be in the works?  This time, with Iran as the target?  What if US vessels are damaged and US troops are killed, the consequence of an Israeli attack on Iran?  Has the USMilitary been issued a Lyndon Johnson/McNamara-type “Stand Down” order?  Already, as a function of such a plan?

If such an event were carried out, and Barack H. Obama should chime, “I told them not to –,“ it would be a simple continuation of his over four years of deceitful double-speak.  A continuation of the motto of the Israeli MOSSAD:
“By way of deception, thou shalt do war.”

Would such an act of deceit be misused by the “Obama administration” to establish increased martial law in the US?
We will know the answers to several questions in a few days.

The same doctrine used when attacking the USS Liberty.
The same doctrine used when attacking the USS Cole (dressed as Arabs).
The same doctrine used when attacking all subsequent flotillas.
The same doctrine used when attacking Palestinians.
The same doctrine used for the planned attack on Iran during the upcoming visit of leading Zionists to the U.S.

The question has been posed, if this act of deceit will be misused to establish increased martial law in the US ?  We will know shortly.

Truedigger3 is incorrect.  The communications between Israeli (French-provided) Mirage jet-fighters, recorded by AWACS, established that Israeli pilots notified their base of the American flag on the USS Liberty.  The recorded response from their base was “attack, attack”.  Some persons have copies of the original.

MOSSAD motto: “By way of deception, thou shalt do war.”  Consistently displayed by GHWBushSr, during his furtive tour as CEO of the CIA, which is rumoured to exist until his demise.  A few persons have posed the question, are the MOSSAD and CIA separate branches of the same organization?  One answer simply posed another question:  “Separate branches ?”

hetero,
a fair observance by you! however, japan never attacked US, but a territory US stole from natives.
and, in addition to that, US was militarily present in their back yard; establishing new colonies and military

but waging war against a much weaker and totally manufactured enemy on a mere assumption that is about
to launch an attack on another country, cannot be right thing to do from legal/moral point of view.
in ‘41 there were no nuclear weapons. today we have. that makes waging wars today against iran [with
nuclear powers involved there] on assumptions, illogical/immoral/illegal.
nevertheless, japan aggressed and not preempted. and we cannot be sure that US had not welcomed
japanese aggression nor can we be sure that it did not allow 9-11—and fro same reasons: in order to expand
and not to remain isolationist.
that was just another big US lie to domestics: that it was pacifist and isolationist; while all observers saw US
as extremely a belligerent empire.

“Who in the US government gave Israel permission to attack a US ship?”

Well, actually, that would be Robert McNamara and Lyndon Johnson who both wanted a reason for America to go to war on the side of Israel against Egypt. Thirty four US seaman died but in spite of Israel’s best efforts the ship didn’t sink. This allowed witnesses to survive the attacks both by land and sea on their ship - and they have not been silent but have told their story over and over again. The response, however, has been silence at every level, both government and media as is usual in any cover up.

At one point, when another American ship had turned to sail to the aid of the ‘Liberty’, to the absolute amazement of the captain, Robert McNamara himself came on the phone and told him in no uncertain terms not to go anywhere near that ship. The sailors were to be left to their fate, and their ship was to be sunk by Israeli boats and planes so that America could claim it had been attacked by Egypt. This is a matter of historical fact, not speculation.

In this incident, for one rare time, Israel is telling the truth. Yes, it was an accident.
The USS Liberty was so close to the Egyptian coast that it almost hugged the beach.
Logically the Israeli pilots thought that a ship so close to the Egyptian coast, during a war, is an Egyptian ship!.

“If Israel launched a pre-emptive attack on Iran would the US actively seek (as in
shoot-down) Israel planes enroute? Or, if he’s not bluffing on that, what is he saying?”  prosefights

Such an attack would not be pre-emptive.  No intelligence service has surfaced
information to suggest that the leadership of Iran plans an attack on “Israel.”  Israeli “leadership” has been attempting to propagandise the world into believing their fairy tale for about three years, intensely for one year.  Such an attack would be a manifestation of the paranoia of the Israeli leadership, projected via a military
maneuver against the leadership of Iran.  If not precisely paranoia, it is the desire to show the world that “Israel” will maintain its nuclear advantage in the Middle East, and continue to be the tail that wags the U.S. and its military dog.

Regarding the statement in subject, the pattern of behavior that a politician-type has established can be applied in order to project or predict that politician´s future
behavior.  Since Mr. B. H. Obama has established a pattern of “double-speak” for over four years, that pattern must be applied.  When applying his double-speak pattern to the statements in subject, the prediction is rather clear.  It predicts that Israeli forces will attack Iran during the visit of their leadership to the U.S., and Barack H. Obama will respond in a manner similar to that of the treasonist, Lyndon B. Johnson, in the USS Liberty debauchery, family Bush and himself in all subsequent debauchery.

If the being, B.H. Obama departs from his well-established pattern of double-speak
behavior, it will be a very unusual event.  His pattern is to “say” the opposite of what he will “do,” demonstrating the motto of the Israeli MOSSAD, “By way of deception, thou shalt do war.”  A very obvious pattern demonstrated by the “war” against the U.S.A. conducted by B.H. Obama and his entourage of Zionist-types.

I am much more worried about the continued use of Nuclear reactors for the
production of energy than nuclear weapons.  prisnersdilema

A few wise leaders in the western world share this concern.  Also, the concept that
nuclear reactors “produce” energy is propaganda.  They dissipate energy, while
altering the form of another “energy”.  As electric generator plants, they are the most
inefficient in usage.  Realists state that 65% of “their” energy goes out the
condensation stack.  When total costs are calculated (the hidden ones that the
public does not see, like storage of partially-used radioactive rods) it is not “cheap
electricity,” as propagated by one bribed, German politician, 2011.

Your mention of Japan is typical of what will continue to happen.  The original, basic
cause of the three burn-downs at Fukushima was explained to me last year by an
engineer, former administrator of an organization that serviced huge diesel engines
that drive the emergency water pumps.  These engines have to be ready to churn
out full capacity within twenty (20) seconds.  This condition is maintained only if the
total engine and the oil in their crankcases is held at their normal operating
temperature.  At normal operating temperature, the engines can start and operate
at maximum load, immediately, pumping water, cooling the system.

However.
NO NUCLEAR, ELECTRICITY GENERATING PLANT MAINTAINED THIS CONDITION, 2011.
It is costly, and would cut into profits of the demented rich who introduced these
potential holocausts, and the ignorant folk who have investments in them. Further, as
reported by one honest, female, US scientist, all three plants at Fukushima went into
burn-down process immediately.  All the huge diesel engines were cold, and when
started by the safety system at full-throttle, immediately broke their crankshafts and
seized, pumping NO COOLING WATER.  Thus, burn-down followed.

All administrators in Japan were forced to lie about what happened, and continues
to happen.  Similarly, administrators in the US, especially France, and more or less,
around the world, continue to lie and spew propaganda.  Similarly to the US, France
has had a continuous string of malfunctions, covered up by the puppetry of the
Sarcozy administration.

What makes the story timely is that next week, the president is set to address one of the mega-lobby groups in Washington: The America-Israeli Political Action Committee. And no doubt the policy question everyone is wondering is this: If Israel launched a pre-emptive attack on Iran would the US actively seek (as in shoot-down) Israel planes enroute? Our “Rugged individualism” and a deep distorted longing to be self-reliant keeps us all pretty much locked into our own narrow little “monkey troop”. America is nothing more than groups of “ethnic” gangs competing for power.

This Country was born in racism! I say, stop fighting it; embrace it and make it our own. I have Jewish friends who consider Blacks as one would a “house pet”. I have Black friends who think that Gays do not have a right to the same civil rights that they “beg” the White man for (MLK). I have Muslim friends that think the Holocaust “wasn’t as bad as it looked”. My Oriental friends are still not quite sure Blacks are not “monkeys”? I have Gay friends who are “creaming” in their trousers to get their chance to be military “heroes” and drop some white phosphorous on the people of the Middle East.  Again, to quote brother Curtis Mayfield, “if there hell below, we are all going to go!”

When Jeremiah Wright was asked if he could get Obama’s ear to present the point of view of Palestine, Wright replied, “Them Jews are not going to let me any where near him!”  Upon hearing this the fake-liberals of MSNBC went fake nuts with rehearsed outrage, declaring Wright “anti-Semitic”! At no point did anyone dare to investigate the accuracy of Wrights statement.

some relationships never change. one of them is the relationship between cosa
nostra gang [mafia, tho large in numbers] and cosa mias.
cosa nostra has army, spy agencies, police, and money [in ancient times land] and
cosa mias mostly debts or hanging onto empty hopes, promises, verbal brilliance
[BS] for which politicians in US are well known for, etc.
so the task would be to [re]unite the cosa mias and transform them into a cosa

so, essentially, tho only potentially, sorry to note, there is always two cosa nostra

At the Lake (FireDogLake);the Daily Kos and Crooks and Liars discussions of “race” are only allowed within the narrow parameters MLK, or the poor helpless Blacks on bended knee begging Whites for the right to be treated as a human being. To site Nat Turner, Malcolm X , The Black Panthers or any other Blacks who dared to defend themselves was taboo!

Like ReadingJones many at the above named sites have decided that the very subject of “race” is a subject that we somehow fixed a long time ago when the “N” work was removed from the public’s ears.

The picture of the “skull-face” Statue of Liberty kinda reminds me on an old funkadelic- parliamentish proclamation that “America eats her young”.

“A pointed sad observation PatrickHenry that reminded me of Rachel Corrie who was crushed to death by the Zionists at age 23, using an American-made bulldozer.”  Arabian Sinbad

Excellent recollection.  Deserves Full-Page reprint !!!
The sadness that picture evoked in me still exists.
For me, she continues to be a genuine hero.

The event is typical of Israeli deceit, as reflected by the MOSSAD motto: “ By way of
deception, thou shalt do war.”

The Israeli Zionists consistently seek American-made “utensils” to hide behind while continuing their evil deeds.  Which utensils typically reflect influence of Zionist dollars within companies that ship such utensils to Israel.  For example, the source of nuclear materials for Dimona, originally.  Was the failure to document the source and punish the instigator an intentional error of the FBI ?  Zionist influence ?  In the 1970s, when the FBI still functioned per charter?  Couldn’t have been either stupidity or ignorance - during their years of genuine function.  Until GHWBushSr began to twist their charter.

For months Zionists have bribed US politicians, and carpeted - with their US Federal Reserve dollars - the paths for alleged, US presidential candidates.  Using their MOSSAD, with AIPAC puppetry support, to conduct a defamation campaign against the only highly-qualified, consistently honest candidate, physician Ron Paul, MD.  With an assassination program up their slimey sleeves, until it was exposed.  All the while deceitfully attempting, via all possible modes, to draggggg the USMilitary into a position, to at least hide behind, after lobbing a few missiles into Iran, in the hope of dragging the USMilitary into their deceitful scheme.  Instead of older jets with Iran markings to attack the USS Enterprise, what new, slimey plan do they have their demented thoughts ?

I must be careful to not confuse the Jewish religion with the Israeli abuse of the words, “Jew”,  “simitic.”, and “anti-semitic”.  Which words have historical value, but which are currently valuable as examples of non-sequiturs.

=========================================
A pointed sad observation PatrickHenry that reminded me of Rachel Corrie who was crushed to death by the Zionists at age 23, using an American-made bulldozer.

In case there is someone who has not heard about Rachel Corrie, let me introduce her to you as one of my heroes, whose blood is more precious and noble than anyone whoever occupied a high office in fascist Israel or complicit political America. A young American activist killed mercilessly on March 16, 2003, as she tried to block the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home in the Gaza Strip of Palestine.

As I am reminded of her noble and glorious sacrifice for the human rights of Palestinians, I reached for the copy of her journal entitled, “LET ME STAND ALONE” which adorns my library, and started reading it for the third time; the least I can do to honor her memory and ultimate sacrifice.

The Rachel story is a sad reminder of how the fascist Zionists treat anyone, including Americans, who support the Palestinians’ human rights, so one can just imagine how they treat and deal with Palestinians.

Their post mimic the stories of the corporate media; the GOP gaff of the week, or the Mit, Newt, Palin show.

“AND that’s why the Israelis keep yelling about the Iranians rather than bombing

You need to stop pretending that Iran is the problem. Iran is not the problem. Yes, their government is a problem for the Iranians, at least those of a civilized, educated frame of mind, but a threat to world peace? They are as much a threat to world peace as Iraq or Afghanistan were or are. Israel has nuclear weapons and is absolutely determined that no one else in the region will have them: for obvious reasons. It is also equally obvious to anyone who can follow a line of reasoning that if Iran wants nuclear capability it is not to attack Israel but to prevent Israel or America from attacking Iran. With the ghastly example before them of what has happened to Iraq and Afghanistan they would be fools not to sense that they are next on the list and to do whatever it takes to protect themselves from a similar fate. Israel hates the Iranians and see them as enemy number one. Not because they fear Iran will attack them, Iran knows that would be a suicidal act and so does Israel, but because Iran supports Hezbollah and Hamas (as they naturally would) and anyone who supports the Palestinians or the Lebanese in any way is marked for death and destruction. America cannot control Israel or Israel’s madness and THAT is a threat to world peace.

It is very impressive that a Whitman graduate, whom we had the opportunity to meet and hear at the commencement th when we were there for our 50 reunion, is indisputably putting the skills and education he gained at Whitman to the very best use for our country. hetero,
according to even MSM, which is owned and controlled by the 1%’, reports that there is proportionately more ashkenazic billionaires and
multimillionaires in US than by any other ethnic group of people.
MSM calls them “jews”, but they have no connection whatever with ancient judeans let alone ancient israelis—which vanished ca 2800 yrs ago.
but alternate sites also confirm MSM’s reports.
ashkenazim with an odd mizrahic or sephardic ‘jew’ are over represented in all media, much TV, movie industry, finances, etc.
take the tv show “numbers”. half of the cast is ‘jewish’ and that is the case also with “criminal minds” which i must watch because my wife makes me
do it.
and i don’t really watch such shows; i usually write lyrics or work on my melodies; either silently or humming them softly.
so, the question arises, whether ‘jews’—having mostly their own genetic pool—produce more talented people than, say, russian or chinese genetic
pools—which then would prove that god is evil or unfair, if it be so—or ‘jews’ behave differently than any other group of people do.
so we have two postulates to consider: ‘jews’ are by nature smarter, nobler, more honest, talented, deserving than any other nationality or ‘jews’ are
more cunning, dishonest, conniving, hating, nepotistic, separatistic, angry than any other ethnos.

naturally, ‘jews, ‘making’ more money than any other folk send more of their young people [and probably in a ratio with blacks of 30 to 1] to colleges
and universities and we know the result: excessive ‘jewish’ control of everything! thanks

The Iranian government has exactly the same (zero) right to develop, possess, and deploy nuclear weapons as the U.S. or Israeli governments or anyone else.

People anywhere have a right to demand that any or every government dispose of its nukes or not develop nukes.

But when a government which possesses nukes demands that another not develop or possess them, that’s an incitement to nuclear arms, though an incitement I’d rather the not-yet-nuclear-armed government resisted!

it can be shown scientifically that meanings are not in words—-meanings of a word or any symbol is inside people’s skin.
so, if that be true or only desirably true, we need to study then what/how/when/why have, say, 98% of americans acquired the meanings of
the US flag or any other symbol that they actually have. after all, it’s YOUR VERY OWN meanings that’ll liberate or enslave you!

this should be our task: leave no stone unturned in order to discover how/why people in US [or anywhere else] ok a war of intervention,
invasion, aggression, ‘helping people out’, ‘preemption’, ‘in defense of our liberties’, etc.
we can get the truth out; however, the 1%/their helpers, clergy are determined never to allow this endeavor.
but i think that at least the posters on this site would recognize that meanings of whatever [jesus, mohammed, moshe, marx, lenin, stalin,
mao, obama] is inside people’s skin and one’s meanings of a symbol [say jesus] never identical in all respects and for all time with the
meanings of any other person.

btw, note please that most americans—includes liberals, leftists do not object to US wars on any principle {as far as i know}—their objection
is based solely on rationalization, expediency, etc. and most egregious reason of them all for not waging a war against iraqi people—oops
iraq, is the fact that they say that bush lied.
this tacitly posits the notion that it would have been ok to wage war against any people—oops, their leaders if a prez would tell the truth.
and obama is now telling it to americans about syria also! in any case, whatever the truth, only that of the1% would prevail, anyway; which
means murder of thousands of people in syria. thanks

Considering a U.S.-Iranian Deal by Stratfor Global Intelligence

an excerpt:

Recall that in our view, nuclear weapons never have been the issue. Instead, the issue has been the development of an Iranian sphere of influence following the withdrawal of the United States from Iraq, and the pressure Iran could place on oil-producing states on the Arabian Peninsula. Iran has long felt that its natural role as leader in the Persian Gulf has been thwarted, first by the Ottomans, then the British and now by the Americans, and they have wanted to create what they regard as the natural state of things.

The United States and its allies do not want Iran to get nuclear weapons. But more than that, they do not want to see Iran as the dominant conventional force in the area able to use its influence to undermine the Saudis. With or without nuclear weapons, the United States must contain the Iranians to protect their Saudi allies. But the problem is that Iran is not contained in Syria yet, and even were it contained in Syria, it is not contained in Iraq. Iran has broken out of its containment in a decisive fashion, and its ability to exert pressure in Arabia is substantial.

When 43 started his war in Iraq I knew the cost to
produce one barrel of oil in Alaska and ship it to
the West coast was $10.00. (It was in the Anchorage
Daily News.)I took the change in price and multiplied
it by the world daily consumption. The increase in
profit to the world wide oil industry was a tidy 1.8-
4.0 Billion per day and the oil in Iraq would become
booty. Then Halliburton got huge cost plus contracts
to aid the war effort. Dick Cheney owned a lot of
Halliburton and 43 made is money in the oil
“bidness”. Does this clarify the matter.

PS “bidness” is one of the code words used by the oil
boys to indicate that they are part of the go along
to get along crowd. Another is “son of a bitch” but
never “motherfucker”. It would please me if some
social scientist would produce a glossary of oil-boy
argot.

It is the OIL stupid! The nuclear program is a red herring and an excuse for war. Iran only “sin” is that it has a lot of oil, as Iraq and Libya. It is the same pattern again and again.!
If a person cannot connect these huge dots, he is either brain-washed intellectually challenged or he is one of those phony so called “progressives”.

Not too long ago, I saw a bumper sticker with the silhouette of a really neat-o fighter plane on it.

It read “Don’t worry America, Israel’s got your back.”

Just thought I would share.

“If Washington can find a basis of reasonable accommodation with a bizarrely erratic and paranoid North Korea, serious negotiations with Iran should be eminently possible.”

I have to ask. Why should either country be obliged to negotiate with the US about their nuclear ambitions? Neither the US nor Israel are negotiating their own nuclear arrangements with other countries - double standards are evident here.

“She is right that Iran’s resistance to inspection “!! No she is not; all declared nuclear side are under constant monitoring by the IAEA, even Parchin military facility has been inspected twice before, and let’s not forgets Iran suspended its activity for 2 years and initiated additional protocol and stringent inspection to no avail. But if you want to insist Iran is trying to challenge the tens of thousands of nuclear weapons held by US or others with one or few weapons of its own, then knock yourself out.

Regarding your comment:

Progressives are a strong 25% of the US adult

Congress promoting our agenda? Kucinich, for the most
part. Even he has to pull punches. Look what happened

Very well put.

And at the right time, here comes Robert Scheer with a flash of enlightenment, truth and moral courage, raising issues which I’ve been repeating on these Truthdig threads for over six years now.

Then enters the likes of the ever hated, screwed-up, fanatic, ignoramus, advocate of the Devil, known as “heterochromatic,” whatever that is, to highjack this thread and bring the level of the discourse so low to suit his petty-mindedness, unfortunately with a little help from “balkas.”

‘Iran’s Shiite leaders were sworn enemies of Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaida, which was inspired and financed by the Wahhabi Sunnis of Saudi Arabia.’

Late summer 2008 salmon fishing was terrible on Strait of Juan de Fuca.  We got skunked.

Long lecture on Wahhabis delivered to LISTENER while no fish biting.

Several weeks before fishing trip Dr Richard Sauder and bill met at Frontier resturant in abq for breakfast.

We had previously met about 10-12 years earlier.

Sauder related a technicolor dream of a US nuclear carrier lying dead in the water, listing, with smoke rising, adn crew concerned with a nuclear meltdown.

And a predition of what will happen if Iran is attacked.

Sauder appeared to be a psycho.

10-12 years earlier we met and Sauder appeared to be from the government.

What’s going on?

It breaks my heart to see a people who were the victims of one of the most despicable atrocities in modern human history (the Holocaust) adopt the tactics of the brutes of the Third Reich. Along with American human slavery, what was done to the Jewish people was unforgivable!

Many of the people I admire most happen to be Jewish:

Howard Zinn
Noam Chomsky
Naomi Klein
Norman Finkelstein
Carl Sagan

That being said, it would seem that what the children of David have learn from the brutality visited upon them in the “Father Land” is to “never again” show mercy on those who might be a threat; “kill them all and let God sort them out!”

prisnersdilema, very interesting and scary thoughts, thanks for the info.. will have to do a bit of reading on that.

I feel like we might have weathered the storm of this nuclear Iran media frenzy for the time being, as it just seems more and more absurd in the news now and I don’t think the US has the stomach for another mass genocide and decades-long military occupation at the moment.  We’ll just have to settle for slowly ruining the lives of innocent civilians via sanctions.  Doesn’t make for good ratings, but we’ll have to make do.

Tell me again how this is any different than Iraq?

the moment a person says i am a christian, muslim, buddhist,

the moment hetero attacks a person and then does almost

would reach the Iranian weapons facilities buried deeply underground without
multiple bombing runs.

you’re wrong to believe that they would use nukes to do the job….....just isn’t
gonna happen unless Iran first attacks using chemical, bio, or nuke weapons.

AND that’s why the Israelis keep yelling about the Iranians rather than bombing
them.

“nobody is about to drop nukes on iran, so go get some friend or family member to

Wrong again. To reach the nuclear facilities Israel would have to use nuclear weapons because no other weapons can go deep enough to destroy them. Welcome to nuclear war in the Middle East brought to you by the proud possessors of 200 nuclear bombs: Israel. The ‘cure’ for Iran, a country that hasn’t attacked another nation in at least 200 years, is not a nuclear war. But since the people running Israel are certifiably insane that fact will make no difference at all.

“vector——- whether or not Ahmedinejad said ” should be wiped off” or “should disappear” or anything else merely similar, it’s still pretty much the same shit. and he’s said worse”  heteroxxxxxxxx, March 1 at 12:31 pm

The wise saying of the original indigenous of what is now the north and south
American continents bears repeating: “What you do speaks so loud, I cannot hear what you say.”

A continous, 3.5 yr example is the mouthings of the being, Barack H. Obama, when campaigning for the US Presidency.  He has done NONE of what he said.

Similar situation with Ahmedinejad and staff.  They have done none of what they have said.

The israeli practice has been consistent since the attack on the USS Liberty:  attack without warning and cover-up with deceit and lies.

Israeli leadership is projecting their deceitful tactics onto Iranian leadership, and are poised to begin a world war by rocketing nukes into Iran, based on Israeli- deceitful tactics and suspicion.
