So Much for a ‘Post-Racial’ America

Posted on Mar 26, 2010
AP / Gerald Herbert

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, holds up a copy of the Senate health care reform bill as he speaks at a rally held March 16 on Capitol Hill by the American Grassroots Coalition and the Tea Party Express.

By Stanley Kutler

Thanks to Newt Gingrich’s loose lips, the cat is out of the bag: The Republican Party, answering the call of a large part of its following, will continue its subtle and not-so-subtle uses of the “race card.” Gingrich said during the health care debate that “much as Lyndon Johnson shattered the Democratic Party for 40 years” when Congress enacted civil rights legislation, President Barack Obama’s health care reform will prove as destructive. His audience needs no reminder of Republican divisiveness, but Gingrich, no stranger to distorting history, demands correction.

First, LBJ and his party, the anomalous home of Southern segregationist congressmen, never could have passed civil rights legislation without the herculean efforts of the late Sen. Everett Dirksen, R-Ill., and the late Rep. William McCulloch, R-Ohio, who led most of their party to enact bipartisan legislation. Appropriately, after a century of trimming, the Republican Party briefly returned to its anti-slavery and Reconstruction Era roots. Gingrich’s version of history cannot imagine what he considers improbable.

Second, the Democratic Party was not destroyed by its support for civil rights, but instead it gained some ideological clarity, and lost that segregationist base, which readily donned the proper Republican attire. Being a Republican in the South became a cover for racial attitudes that in no way could be suppressed or changed. The shift is captured in the recent movie “The Blind Side,” with its Christian, Southern setting, in which a prospective employee sheepishly reveals her dark secret—she’s a Democrat. Can anything be more ironic than a Republican “Lincoln Day” dinner in the South? The Republican Party of today, born in that 1960s moment, must be totally alien to its founders. Where are you, Sen. Dirksen, now that we need you?

Media pundits debate whether the Republican Party and the so-called tea party are one or two distinct entities. The former needs the latter for its opportunity to speak for “the people,” and tea partygoers have little choice but to be Republican Party fellow travelers.

More history is in order. The Supreme Court’s 1954 decision striking down segregation in Brown v. Board of Education is the watershed event for the next half century and beyond in our domestic life. Race became—and remains—a central, national issue. It serves as a political platform for those who advocate equality for all citizens, and it provides that useful instrument to play on prejudice for political gain. Racial equality is embraced within our constitutional framework in ways 180 degrees from what had been; nevertheless it also has left us with an increasingly alienated and emotionally distraught part of the populace, bereft of the once legally mandated system of apartheid.

Square, Site wide

Barack Obama’s election in 2008 for some signaled a new day—one eagerly grasped as proof of a “post-racial America.” Gingrich and his fellow Republican presidential wannabes know better. They know exactly what their followers mean when they scream and chant, “Take back our country.” They stir a dangerous pot of anger and hatred. Republican leaders can exploit the race card subtly, as they play to their supporters at health care “death sentence” rallies. Our memories are short. Witness Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, Obama’s Great White Hope for bipartisanship on health care reform, and his obscene remarks as he gave credibility to those protests, even though he knew better. Grassley appeared at white bread rallies, replete with obvious placards that denounced the president, and with racist innuendoes.

Innuendoes are gone; witness the recent protests at the Capitol by supposed tea party folks as they hurled racial epithets at congressmen as they approached to vote on health care. House Appropriations Committee Chair David Obey, D-Wis., merely was accused of illegitimate birth; Barney Frank, D-Mass., received the familiar homophobic remarks. Similar outbursts occurred in the chamber. The C-SPAN archives undoubtedly will prove useful to future historians. Unlike the networks’, the C-SPAN video was unedited and not vetted to remove “offensive” remarks.

If Obama now campaigns as vigorously for financial reforms as he has over the past year on behalf of health care, he again will face determined opposition. The lobbies opposing him will easily recruit shock troops of “ordinary” Americans, demanding to take back the country. Once again, their racial anger will animate them and fuel their hostility. Reining in the unbridled excesses of our banking and financial institutions is desirable public policy that will benefit the many, and only to the consternation of a few. Yet we can expect determined opposition from a mass that will benefit, however indirectly, from such reform. Nonetheless, they will bury their own interest in favor of their blind, unreasoning hatreds.

Race is the issue we will face for a long, foreseeable future. Obama’s election owed much to his mixed-race ancestry. He undoubtedly attracted a large number of new, younger voters, anxious to make a statement they thought worthy of America. Certainly, his election majority was multiracial—and that may be difficult to maintain. But we can look in vain to find a presidency that has encountered such ugly, virulent opposition within its first year as Obama’s. Even George W. Bush, winner of our most disputed election, encountered formidable opposition only when he led us to a war for obviously dubious reasons. Make no mistake: Race as an issue will not go away.

The media have obsessed on the 2010 midterm elections, and beyond to 2012. The Republican nominee will have a racist constituency he dare not disavow. All the more imperative that President Obama, who, in the health care run-up, looked and sounded like the 2008 candidate he was, return to that attractive, widely appealing form. Race will remain in our politics, but we can defeat the ambitions of those who embrace it to divide and cater to our worst instincts.

I’ve heard that towards the end, Yugoslavia had more than 20 militias.  A big country like the US should be able to support hundreds.  Will the UN have enough black helicopters, though?

Hey out there! Is anyone interested in starting a secular humanist, progressive, multi-ethnic, gender neutral, inclusive militia? Surely, if such a multi-cultural grouping were fielded the camo-wearing bully boys would surely crawl back into the fetid swamp from which they came and start feeding on each other as they marinated in their own bile!

I for one do not wish to be dictated to by idiots, nor do I wish to be tread on by a bunch of radical acting teen racists tea partiers. Perhaps we should let the natives whom this land really belongs try to straighten it out. Crime is running rampant, Bush made a mess of things and Obama is following, and Palin/Beck has the naive trotting down the fascist racist path to Fascism, in 2012, the Bush family planning to put another Bush in charge, the blackwater gang lead by the blood thirsty Gates killing in the good American Christian way, putting our country to shame, as if we need that. We need a coming together , and the founding fathers were not all that great, most all were of the mason cult and thought the same way, and we the people had no say, especially women. The Tea party movement demand their rights, but seem to forget that the rights of the ones already here were taken away.

The problem is simple: the concept of slavery never ended. Go back and read the diaries of early settlers; the military West Point used to be wealthy folks: wanting a “commission” for their off spring: now it is free by appointment of Congressmen: who are united in targeting and harming the PEOPLE of the USA for their personal profit & their personal gain.
You can read the atrocities of what was done to the Chinese: both here & when THIS nation set up the Peoples Republic of Democratic Dictatorship of China: SAME concept: told them to “set up” a Congress; put the laws the people wanted on the books; they would be HAPPY thinking the laws were in place. Then do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted however they wanted & never be brought to justice. SAME Corps THERE as are here;
Democracy IS setting the TRUTH to the side & presenting a DIFFERENT idea: using the MEDIA: power of image, power of print, power of spoken word: to create “illusions” that are not true; to manipulate and sway the opinions and minds of men they claim to be “inferior”; “disparaging democracy”: they have nothing good to say about anyone in the USA; EXCEPT themselves; they puff themselves up to be something other than lower than slug slime criminals & crooks;
Day of Deceit: tells how THIS nation’s leaders provoked the attack at Pearl Harbor: NOT to race to STOP Hitler THAT is the LIE: the REAL picture was to bring HIM & many of his merry men back to the USA; and then develope “their” world plan misleading & deceiving the PEOPLE of the USA via the MEDIA.
They have never abided by any laws of any nation: yet the PEOPLE of the USA DO! And they are rolling with laughter cuz we the PEOPLE are so “gullible” and will “believe” anything they tell us.
Toxic Gov: toxic homes, toxic food. Purposely poisoning the people & the planet for profit. No understanding at all with their so called “intellectual” elites that the earth is SPIRIT.
Everything in our LIVES are purposely poisoned with chemicals: to HARM us, as they get $ for prescriptions DESIGNED to cause MORE medical harm. THIS is the GREAT American “democracy”: which is target and harm ALL except for those in on their “game” they call “democracy”. Do you know they BRAIN STORM at THINK TANKS at universities for MORE WAYS they can harm us & every nation they have gone to & set up dictatorship after dictatorship? So they can then put chicken manure in hot dogs to “make it more appealing”; My mothers ancestors came over on the Mayflower; my fathers were HERE already.
Let the TRUTH be TOLD: the PEOPLE are OVERBILLED for EVERYTHING: just like the Pentagon OVERSPENDS for everything.
The air is polluted; the Corps supposedly were to have CLEARED their pollution by 1970; then extended til 1980; it’s 2010 & they HAVE NEVER DONE IT; Congress is expected to “do something” re it: by 2050.
  The average onion purchased in stores contains 45 at least pesticides; the nutrition in food is nil; every single child born has thyroid problems to cause them to “look” healthy: folks are overweight to hide the lack of nutrition. ALL exposed in Rockefellers Health Institute: YEARS ago;
They have been #1 in killing infants due to chemicals: that are in our homes, our shampoos, every single thing we buy: is all geared to HARM us.
Plastic floods the earth cuz it gave them $; same with GASOLINE: ethanol which is grain alcohol biodegradeable, leaves no footprint; with a STILL: could run own electricity; make own fuel from prairie grass; make own moonshine if you were so inclined. Your animals & food were WITHOUT chemicals.
SO: tell me, how do the “intellectual elites” do ANYTHING that is for the BENEFIT of the PEOPLE? WHICH is what GOVERNING is all about.

1852, Ashland oregon: John Beeson diaries & other settlers record that a “democratic meeting” where it was stated democracy is setting the TRUTH to the side & presenting a different idea. His outrage & the butchering & brutal killing for sport of even children of the RED man: led him to write newspapers; intercepted by judge, who made him a hunted man. He came west with Rockefeller’s brother.
He chose exile rather than risk harm to wife or son; traveling & talking about what was happening Abe Lincoln heard him & invited him to the White House. He stated as recorded in Beeson’s A Plea for the American Indian: Lincoln’s words: If I live I will see to it that the RED man is treated with the dignity, honor and respect due to ANY HUMAN BEING (in essence). THAT was what got him killed.
Bad enough that THAT status was given to a BLACK man: but they would just run this nation just like a LARGE PLANTATION as has been stated repeatedly.
David Rockefeller thanked the MEDIA ABC, CBS, NBC, Time magazine, Washington Post, & other “great” publishers for KNOWING what was going on & KEEPING their discretion, for if the LIGHTS of publicity had BEEN SHOWN on what was in REALITY going on: “they” never could have gotten away with it. KNOWING, of course, that the PEOPLE in the USA would NEVER HAVE STOOD for what was being done. (D L CUDDLY: the new world order chronological); it was SET UP by the US GOV: who claimed their “system’ using BANKS and “intellectual elites” would be FAR SUPERIOR than any run any other way.
It is NOT a 2 party system and never has been; THAT is because “the people must have a choice”; Washington Post reporter stated: they said (CONGRESS) that the PEOPLE wanted to see “discord” and “tension” between the supposed 2 parties and an occassional “scandal”. So that was what they “showed” the PEOPLE when DIRECTED to.
THIS IS ILLEGAL in the USA as it was what HITLER did so that 1/2 of Germany had NO CLUE what was going on. THAT law was issued right after WW11.
********HOWEVER, with setting the TRUTH to the SIDE and presenting FALSE PICTURES, FALSE reports: started clear back in 1852. Target and HARMING the PEOPLE is EXPLOITATION: and it is a CRIME. It is the victimizing, plundering, looting, destroying for PERSONAL profit & PERSONAL gain.
FASCISM is Gov & Businesses working UNITEDLY: and THAT was being done by the USA under the “name” of “democracy”. Hitler was ELECTED folks: so “democracy” is NOT of the people, by the people, for the people at all. It is putting FALSE pictures, and harming the PEOPLE.
Laws are written on the books for looks: for the PEOPLE to be happy BELIEVING that the LAWS are being FOLLOWED: they are NOT. And the JUDGES including the MILITARY are more criminal than most any appearing BEFORE them.
MANAGING PUBLIC PERCEPTION: is done via the MEDIA as the PEOPLE would THINK that the LAW of FALSE information was being followed. NO LAWS are being followed in the USA; nor in any nation THIS country has gone to. The book OVERTHROW will list multiple nations: as it is HITLERS agenda being carried out.
Democracy means THE PEOPLE MUST PAY: and they have been overbilled for EVERYTHING; cost $35 people paid $1m BACK in 1972: when minimum wage was $1.50.
THIS is the nation that weapons up bullies, tyrants, and tells them to “warehouse” the FOOD, etc, and FORCE the people to pay more more more. THIS our “politicians” say: is “democracy”.
It is INDEED based on HATE, RACISM: and the “war on drugs” simply put millions of “minorities” in jail: to work for far less than minimum wage: and to boot, they have to “pay back” for time spent there. Most are on trumped up, manufactured, LIES. Another “rockefeller” special.
Our “politicians” and our “judges” are an utter disgrace to the human race & an abomination to everything America is supposed to stand for. They are united and dedicated to keeping Slaves of Americans.

The fact is, though, that the fools who make such calls and threats are in a tiny minority — a minority the Democrats want to make the very face of opposition to ObamaCare.” He then goes on to say that ” ObamaCare fans fan attack flames.” History shows that “blaming the victim has been a political tactic use by all Tyrants, in recent times, Napoleon, Hitler , Stalin, etc. Over the years Mr. Boortz has been an ardent practitioner of Flame Fanning.  Be it “flame fanning or fear mongering or hate mongering, tis all the same: Blame the Victim to justify evil.  Wittness:January 26, 2010 1:07 pm ET filed under Research

Assimilation use to mean that our immigrant ancestors had to become as “White” as possible. They had to adopt traits, characteristics of, mannerisms, accents (or lack thereof) of White America. They could not publically display affection, ties, memories, or cultural expressions of their ancestoral origins. No one adhered to such notions and rightly so. Assimilation now means that to be American is to respect differences, to embelish cutural availabilities, to appreciate the enrichments of our diversity. No longer does racism of the past have a hold on the mindset of its immigrant population; first, second, third generations and beyond are not schakled to the sensibilities of a 1950’s America. Racism is a power grab, an inherent survialist fear of losing control, an insane unacceptance of change.
The number of Americans that adopt the “dig in your heels” stance and trepidation against social evolution, dwindle with each generation.
Anchored loosely by the power and money of big buisness beyond this last century; the capitalist bond with White America has now regionalized itself in the internet geographical world. The force of their dwindling numbers remain if not a formidable cocern; at the very least and most likely just a very serious headache.
America is being put to a test. On one side Obama has reached out, held hearing, capitulated, and even offered and filled positions with conservative appointments. The other side is the self proclaimed “HELL NO”, lying, distorting, denying, fear mongering, hate filled, and now threatening party. The party that has forsaken America in its time of econmic need by not participating, by abandoning its Congressional possibilities and responsibilities.
Like shrieking demons grasping with their claws down the sides of an abyss as they fall further into their fate; the Republican Party along with Christian organizations & churches, along with their Fox propaganda network including publications, along with their knuckle dragging neandrathal tea bagging racist base, will meet their political fate. The self destructive agenda has reached critical mass and can not be stopped even by the GOP, even if they wanted to control it now.
Come November, short of the iconaclastic south; both American White Christianity and the GOP will fatefully discover what lies and ill concieved methods will wrought. They will insist otherwise; just as they did about the passage of Health Reform.
The difference now it that Ameircans are more and more becoming aware of the GOP tactics, and agenda.
It’s still the economy Stupid! Americans know who has been trying to find solutions for the concerns of our nation. Americans know what Republicans and their cheer leading Christian organizations have been peddling. Younger generations are witnessing the lies of their parents; witnessing the hypocrits among them, the liars among them. Witnessing the leaders and the words that their parents venerate. These lies, these irresponsible methods that the GOP is doubling down on, will cause a resurgence of interst and involvement of America’s youth voting demographic. Our children are not blind. Come November, the voting block that will put the final nail on the viability of the national Republican Party will be America’s youth.

workers were murdered in the 60s, in racist Philadelphia Mississippi.

… and today, a contemporary Republican hero’s elevation comes close on a
recent noose-related incident. Following the announcement of Barak Obama’s
November win, Baylor University students hung a noose from one of the trees
on campus and Obama’s campaign posters were burned on campus. Ken Starr,
our contemporary Republican hero, recently accepted the job as President of
that fine university, Baylor University, in Waco Texas.

At the highest levels of the Republican Party, there is a long-running theme
beginning with Nixon, continuing with Reagan and now the Neut.

All Republicans know they cant afford to distance themselves too far from the
hate mongers, racists and fear peddlers; so, what to do?  So close, yet just far
enough. A delicate balance.  On principle, you understand: Good old Judeo-
Christian and Constitutional principles.

It will be fun watching.

But, any public representative who promotes thuggish and gangland behavior –
basically, hooliganism - comes much closer to fitting the stereotype of the
Nazi despot than a public representative who seeks compromise and reason.

However, if our representatives are at risk, then arrests may be in order. I
would begin with the Republican head Mitch McConnell (dont know if he’s he’s
the Big Bird puppet or a puppeteer – for dramatic purposes, it hardly matters)
and slide down (if there is a ‘down’) from there. And I’d do it quickly - given the
Republican icons’ lust for nostalgia for places like Philadelphia Mississippi, I’d
say the arrests should begin sooner rather than latter.

It is a quick trip from intimidation to murder, as in the place Reagan lifted up to
the nation. When national leaders indulge in intimidation, encourage violence
and cheer mayhem, the trip is even faster.

It’s worth repeating: Any public representative who promotes thuggish and
gangland behavior – basically, hooliganism - comes much closer to fitting the
stereotype of the Nazi despot than a public representative who seeks
compromise and reason.

Race continues to be a big propaganda tool; but it is
being used by fewer and fewer fringe types as
America’s whiteness fades into varying shades of
brown and various other non-white colors.
It is less and less effective as a point about which
to gather/rally.
As these uneducated, frightened, and insecure people
feel their increasing powerlessness, they will become
more dangerous in their last desperate attempts to
deny their worthlessness.
The GOP had better get a grip; they’re sliding down a
slope headed for a cliff and I don’t think most
Americans are buying what they’re selling.

Charles Blow’s Op-Ed in today’s NYTimes makes a very important point: A poll by Quinnipiac University released this week shows demographics of the Tea-baggers is a SHRINKING group. It’s over-overwhelmingly White (despite some token non-Whites), evangelical Christian, and less educated than average.  It’s, in Blow’s words “anachronistic”.

And more and more desperate as the nation gets more “Brown”.  This year we could have more non-White babies born in the US than White ones. And this makes the crazies crazier.  And more dangerous, despite GRYM’s protestations to the contrary.

I’m not bothered by the “browning of America”.  I have a White son and a Brown son, and I am TOTALLY biased: I think they are the two handsomest boys on the planet.
(luckily for them, neither looks much like me! smile )

I think the strategy of the GOP dooms it in the long term. Perhaps I am a cockeyed optimist but I refuse to think that a majority of American voters are supportive of hate based politics.

The real shame is in the unfitness of the Democratic Party to advantage themselves by this Republican gaffe in strategy. This seems an ideal time for third party inroads into the Duopoly monopoly…..

Let’s hope that Anarcisse is right and that racism is in its last gasp. Curious that the pretend christians are the most vehement racists, I live in the south, which can be attributed to their false doctrines of; “I’m not responsible, god told me to do it and/or Satan made me do it but I’m not responsible” and their insane rapture doctrine. The white racists use their racism for excuses failing and the black racists use racism for failing, the victim mentality. Two heads of the same coin that need each other to propagate.

Contrary to Kutler, I think race is dying out as a political issue.  The excitement of (some of) the Tea-Baggers is probably its death-rattle.  This was evident even before Obama; recall that at one point in 2000 polls showed that General Powell could be elected president.  The disappearance of race is going to leave a lot of people at a loss as to how to moralize about their superiority over others, but they’ll get over it.  The rest of us can find other things to fight over.

Mr. Kutler is correct. Race, racism and the ugly
politics that go with it is alive and well in an
America with exploitive politicians. I am
reminded of the great English divide that lasted
for many centuries. An English historian in my
youth asked me; “which history do you want to
read, John Lingard or John Green”. I was naive
so he enlightened, one is the Catholic history
and one the protestant.  I hope the blood
letting has ceased.

What’s this country coming to when a man can’t stand up and hate niggers, jews, women, and queers?  When you can’t threaten to kill people you don’t like and disagree with, things have gone too far.  That’s not America, that’s fascism or socilaism or communism or all three.  “Power comes out of the barrel of a gun” as a red-blooded American once said.  If you don’t want to get shot then get yourself on the right side of things.  Get smart - don’t be morally responsible for your own murder.  Being responsible is what America is all about.

“Race will remain in our politics, but we can defeat the ambitions of those who embrace it to divide and cater to our worst instincts.” (quote from Kutler))

Specifically, how?  Progressive Republicans, Democrats, Libs/Progs, Greens, those farther left—stick together and openly, vocally support fairness and justice for all on every possible occasion. Don’t get thrown off track by the coming immigration debates. Emphasize “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”
It will probably be necessary for those who gag over it to include the “under God” bit in order to maintain the more important part of this powerful mantra.
Opportunistic?  Yes.  Politics is the art of the possible, though I don’t remember who said it.
Politics is also the art of cooperation, unity, persistence—and a kind of persistent, cheerful idealism that wins friends and influences people.
Let’s go for it! Electing Obama was a great gain for the country and the world.  It’s vital to the health and reputation of the nation that we hang onto it.
