House Speaker's Office

House Speaker John Boehner, orange, shoots President Obama a look.

By Eugene Robinson

Those who would chronicle events in Washington can find no richer source of analogy and metaphor than the Three Stooges. These days, I’m thinking of the times when an exasperated Moe, having suffered the indignity of an accidental spritzing or clobbering, turns to Larry or Curly and demands, “What’s the big idea?”

The premise of the debt-ceiling fight is too farfetched for a Stooges film, since no audience could imagine leaders of a great nation stumbling into such a mess. Moe’s trademark line is still relevant, however, even if it’s not followed by the two-fingered poke in the eyes that our elected officials richly deserve.

It is clear that unless President Barack Obama ends up taking unilateral action to break a hopeless deadlock, Republicans will win. The House, the Senate and the White House are all working within GOP-defined parameters: New tax revenue is off the table, painful budget cuts are a given, everyone seems to accept the principle that a debt-ceiling increase—which allows the Treasury to pay bills Congress has already incurred—must be tied to reductions in future spending.

The biggest sticking point is whether the GOP can force Democrats to climb back into the ring for a rematch next year. And why wouldn’t Republicans want another fight? They won the last budget battle, which was over a possible government shutdown, and must feel confident of winning the next one, too. Momentum is on their side, even though they control just one wing of the Capitol—and even though they advocate measures that most Americans reject.

Conservatives are on a winning streak because they have a Big Idea that serves as an animating, motivating, unifying force. It happens to be a very bad idea, but it’s better than nothing—which, sadly, is what progressives have.

Square, Site wide
The simplistic Big Idea that defines today’s Republican Party is that taxes are always too high and government spending is always wasteful. Therefore, both taxes and spending need to be reduced.

That’s basically it. There are a couple of asterisks: Many conservatives, perhaps most, don’t consider the military a part of “government” per se and are more amenable to defense spending; and even a tea party freshman is more likely to keep an open mind about the publicly funded infrastructure project in his or her own district. There is also an overarching philosophy about the relationship between government and the individual, and some conservatives imagine a “return” to a Jeffersonian Arcadia that never was.

But the essence of the far right’s Big Idea fits neatly on a bumper sticker: Cut taxes, cut spending. It’s a simple, powerful message that connects with everyday experience. Who hasn’t encountered an example of government waste and inefficiency? Who enjoys paying taxes?

I can think of no greater threat to our nation’s prospects than the GOP’s policy-by-anecdote crusade against government. The United States is falling behind other nations in infrastructure, education and health care indicators such as infant mortality and life expectancy. Income distribution has worsened, and upward mobility—a huge factor in drawing generations of talented immigrants to these shores—has become sluggish.

At a time when the need to develop alternatives to fossil fuels is clear and urgent, Asian and European governments are making major investments in new energy technologies; we lag behind. Money is needed for basic research that might not produce practical results for years—such as the government-funded research that developed the Internet.

We’re wasting human potential. We don’t even talk about poverty anymore. In the midst of a profound economic slump, with unemployment at crisis levels, we’ve just had a long and bitter budget debate that wasn’t about how government might try to create jobs. It was about budget cuts that will eliminate jobs.

And what is the progressive response? Basically, all of the above—which doesn’t fit on a bumper sticker. Democrats have utterly failed to develop and communicate a Big Idea of their own.

Obama talks about “winning the future,” but that’s too nebulous. I’d suggest something pithier: jobs, jobs, jobs.

People may dislike paying taxes, but they dislike unemployment more. Progressives should talk about bringing the nation back to full employment and healthy growth—and how this requires an adequately funded government to play a major role.

The next time Moe asks about the big idea, Democrats, say “jobs.” You might avoid a slap on the noggin and a poke in the eyes.

It’s interesting to know when someone is told to smarten up and learn or they putting themselves and everyone around them in danger from corporate system and it’s thieving Admiralty Law they are supposed to be a terrorist.

If this is the kind of dumb people you have in USA, as a majority, no wonder you getting screwed by corporations and their bought to order government / your government.

Anyway ... the real terrorists are ones who fund wars, oppression, steal land, create borders and conflicts, charge interest, use stock market as their own private casino, abuse our planet, murder or order to murder, torture, create prisons and especially ones who think they’re above the Law. Common Law that is.

Well that describes just about every leader and corporation today. Time for a Lawful Rebellion.

LMAO .. go back and learn to comprehend what you read. You’re in way over your head and a lot of trouble until you learn. The sad part is you’re putting your family and friends in danger as well.

You are now committing what may be a direct felonious threat, ie, an actual felony, threatening not just me, but my friends, and most importantly, my family. You are now a terrorist.

So the threats about jail were lies? Like everything else?

You couldn’t form a reasonable or feasible argument, I called “bullshit”, which it is, and your response was to threaten me.

Go ahead. Make my day.

I must say some PPL sure do get angry when they don’t get their way. Some go as far as accusing others of what they themselves do. When that doesn’t work they run to mommy or daddy screaming they have been wronged.
Example: “But, as you have now made threats against me, including my physical person, I have requested that the management of TruthDig review your posts and take appropriate action.”

I think a long time user of TD would know better than I:
“Add “crackpot wacko” to the list of favorite terms used by the zionist shill, “inheret the wind,” in an attempt to scapegoat purveyers of accurate information and truth.”

I’m sure there are more such references all over TD. smile

Anyone looking for truth and solutions to problems can easily follow comments that include links [showing proof] and skip most that are drivel.
Enjoy smile

1st amendment doesn’t give you the right to lie/cheat/commit fraud. Owners are not your babysitters = YOU are responsible for your actions. I don’t have to do anything. All it takes is owners, a knowledgeable user, anyone who reads your posts with enough power or community at large to toast you straight to jail.
You did it to yourself. LOL

*****************

As I said, good luck with that.  It’s clear your understanding of the laws of libel, slander, fraud, “cheating” and the illegality of “lying” are no better than your understanding of the scientific method.  That is, non-existent.  Apparently, your understanding of the 1st Amendment is equally lacking.

You haven’t been libeled, slandered, defrauded, cheated, or even lied to, or lied about.  There are legal definitions for those terms and you don’t get to decide what they mean. The courts already have.

So, if you wish to pursue this silly idea that your absurd notions cannot be challenged I suggest you remember the old lawyer’s adage:

He who is his own lawyer has both a fool for a lawyer and a fool for a client.

Anyone in America can sue anyone for anything.  And there’s always some lawyer willing to take your money to file it. Whether the suit makes it past the straight-faced test is wholly another matter.

But, as you have now made threats against me, including my physical person, I have requested that the management of TruthDig review your posts and take appropriate action.

With all the protests and rebellions going on around the world it’s only a matter of time til people depose the super-rich and start going after smaller fish connected to them.
If all hell breaks loose and/or people get well organized they will both be done at same time, the super-rich and their flunkies.

@Anar

No trolling at all. This is war, war between the people and super-rich. Battle lines have been drawn long time ago. But it’s the people who are waking up, organizing and improving themselves, way beyond of what you may think.
Keep in mind there are kids being born that can literally read minds and they know exactly where you stand.
From learning self-honor [martial arts] i know it’s possible to kill with a single sound. And i know people who can do it, i seen ‘em do it when attacked by police dogs or wild animals. You may notice some kids don’t need a leash to walk their dogs. These same kids can get almost anything they want when interacting with average people.
The super-rich & their buddies are in big trouble, and they definitely know their time is up. Only thing they can do is lessen the populations and eventually hide in their bunkers. Death traps since they can’t get off Earth. They will live out their lives and die in their own self made tombs.
History again repeats itself ... but this time there’s a new kind of paradigm unlike any other in man’s/woman’s history.

Here’s ‘the big idea’: Obama has carefully followed Republican policies
throughout his three years in office (even with Democratic majorities in the
House and the Senate).

Obama has:

1.  Extended the Bush tax cuts for the rich with McConnell.

2.  Extended the Bush tax cuts for the rich with Boehner.

3.  Extended the Bush tax cuts for the rich with Grover Norquist and the Tea
Party.

4.  Appointed the CEO of a company that paid no federal taxes, received federal
bailouts and in invests heavily in ‘job creation’ efforts in foreign countries to
head of his ‘Jobs Council’.

5.  Accelerated Bush ‘bailouts’ to banks and other financial institutions and then
insisted on a ‘hands off’ policy when the CEOs and top-level employees
received “bonuses” paid with taxpayer money.

6.  Promised “change” and then kept Bush key appointees to continue to advise
you on military and financial affairs?

7.  Extended the Bush ‘war on terror’ wasting thousands American and Afghan
lives and billions of US dollars and leading to the killing of 31 American soldiers
this morning.

8.  Set aside all efforts to reform immigration.

9.  Led an effort to pass a Republican Governor’s health insurance subsidy in
lieu of single payer universal coverage.

10. Ash-canned the most qualified candidate for the consumer protection
bureau.

11.  Halted meaningful reform of the financial system, leaving in-place (and
even larger) the six largest ‘banks’.

12.  Preserved government sponsored tax cuts, tax breaks and low-to-no
interest funding for the financial system, corporations and the wealthy.

13.  Administered a failed ‘program’ to help middle class families holding
‘underwater mortgages’.

The most recent instance: Obama signed the most recent ‘debt deal’ (while
Pelosi, Hoyer and Reid all voted to ‘support Obama’).

Few Republicans could ask for more from their own candidates.

The other ‘big idea’ is Obama’s lose of previous supporters:

First-time voters who supported Obama simply will not be back. They’ve seen
Obama’s actions, they’ve noted the results, they’ve suffered the consequences.

Younger and first-time voters have learned ‘not to bother’. They will not return
to ‘support Obama’, only to see the results.

Those who dont regularly vote, but saw in (or projected onto) Obama an
idealism have now seen him in action and will not be back.

Many single issue voters are gone and will not return.

Loosing these former supporters has certainly doomed a second term for
Obama - so, voting third party will not ‘help the Republicans’.

Obama lost these folks all by himself.

The question remaining for us is this:

Are we all going to be like Pelosi, Hoyer and Reid and end up voting for tax cuts
for the wealthy, for stripping middle class programs, for maintaining the
absurdly low taxes corporations actually pay, for supporting 1400 millionaires
who pay no taxes last year, for… : All “in order to support Obama”. I wont.

If we Democrats cannot run a Democratic candidate, then I will vote third party.

Do I believe a third party vote will ‘help the Republicans win’?

No. I believe Obama’s anti-Democratic policies have ‘helped the Republicans
win’.

To continue to ‘support’ Obama is to continue to ‘help the Republicans win’ -
just as Obama has done.

@ITW & Anar

In kids terms:

Well you 2 geniuses seem to forget there are rules called Law. Under Law the system must provide a Remedy no matter the situation.

The reason the word “Under” is used is because all Law is derived from Ancient Records and as original Law was given to men/women by GODs.

What has happened more recently is Law societies, a secretive group, didn’t publish one half of Law to control the Judgement market.
Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKG0wUJWbcI

Besides that All I’ve done in all my comments is present the Law ... while you boys have committed crimes by your accusations and lies/deception/fraud.

This means anyone who reads this thread and related threads can use TD to find you, charge you and/or throw your asses in Jail .. as is the Law.
Ignorance is no excuse.

Maybe that’s the price you need to pay for being shills.

I tried to tell you and explain it to you but as usual you wouldn’t listen nor check.

At least others were smart enough to say their peace and moved on. Instead you boys are digging yourselves a bigger hole with each comment. And it’s beautifully preserved for everyone to see.

Maybe now you know why I’ve been “LMAO” (Laughing My Ass Off) and saying facts of “dumb” and “stupid”.

You see, this site is called “Truthdig” and I made sure I didn’t say anything that’s not part of truth ... while you boys got some pretty extensive lies going.

I say “boys” since you don’t even know the basics of what your parents should have taught you.

As I see it, You’ve gone far enough to fill up 7 to 10 pages of charges, that’s just for a start.

About Inherit The Wind’s racist anti-semitic Jewish comments.

Originally Hebrews turned Jews were prisoners in Egypt for crimes of theft, fraudulent trading, lies, forgery and similar while others were soldiers from previous wars between Europe/white Aryans as well as a mix of Babylonian/Aryan descent.

As Egypt was a Geocentric meeting place of all tribes on Earth and believed/practiced the Highly Just “L A W” of MA’AT/MU’AT anyone short of death penalty was given a choice: death or contract by learning & working it off at work camp, hopefully changing their ways according to Original LAW of GODs.

The Worst of the Worst, all on one island of Nile delta, so they couldn’t escape, poison anyone down river and/or damage anyone else. Instead a number of times they tried to revolt, cause damage and mayhem and poison Egypt anyway.

Finally they did poison Egypt’s Grain Reserves and Egypt’s Justice System went ballistic. Every first born of every family of specifically Hebrews was killed as a warning. Later Moses found out he was Hebrew and a High Priest of Amun/Amen Priest Cult. Cult as it didn’t follow the Law of MA’AT anymore but a bastardized Roman version. Similar to Scientology.

To stop Egypt from following them and to disable main protection of Egypt Jews STOLE the Ark of the Covenant [YHMH = ancient machine] and ran for it. That’s why Hebrews spent 40 yrs in desert & nobody wanting them in their back yard. Even GOD from above told them to shape up or die.

Finally they stuck a deal with Canaanites, a small tribe, and after a time went back to their crocked dealing to further their ends, anyway. 10 most northern tribes were kicked out by Assyrians and spread among the deserts to wander. THE highest possible sentence besides death.

As they spread via Asia Minor and Europe they decimated people and Cultures by Usury and War. They stole land, property, knowledge and anything else they could get their hands on leaving the Indigenous Tribes and Clans with little to nothing.

Same Jewish houses are leaders of today’s business, money, European and Western governments, Russia and anywhere else the Aryans have spread. They run Israel, Vatican City state, Inner City London state, Washington DC state, Illuminati, Freemasons, IMF, World Bank, Central Banks, IMF, WTO, UN, all related police and military.
They use same thieving and fraudulent tricks as they did with Egypt to take over this whole planet; religion, money, war, police and military.

Their most prized work of deception and conquest is “United States of America” as it allowed them to spread their military [not yours of the people] to over 180 countries on earth. Subsequently money system and trading system, with added bonus of corrupt lying Christian/Jewish religions.

Now they are going after the last holdout parts of Earth .. China, Persians/Iran, North Korea, Congo and many smaller resistors. At the same time starving out & killing off any Original Tribe on Earth they can.

If anyone thinks I’m anti-Semitic than you better think again, because there’s 6.5 Billion people on Earth that are learning who the perpetrators are .. and soon enough they will rise up to take down that corrupt group of Zionist/Jewish/Babylonian/Aryan BASTARDS. If that doesn’t happen then their own GODs from above will do it as they did with Babylon.

Final result: There’s no way those Murdering Rip-0ff Crackpot Wacko Zionist Idiot Bastards are getting off this planet to pollute rest of solar system and beyond, as is their plan. Right now there are 1,000’s of ships surrounding Earth and preventing anyone from leaving. This blockade will hold til all people on Earth learn respect, morality, ethics and be one with nature and universe or GODs will wipe out most of life on earth again ... by some kind Armageddon to start afresh.

We, as dominant life on Earth, have no other choices Period

Thank you drbhelthi. I’ll add that one “crackpot wacko” to list of names used by zionist shills too wink

Part 2:
Now let’s look at the Root of the problem. How Canada, USA or any other Commonwealth occupied countries came to be.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Am+I+free+in+this+so+called+democracy?&aq=f

You need to watch all 4 parts to get full scope of the situation, as it’s similar for all places where they went. Listen/watch carefully as lots of info is being covered in short time. You may need to watch it numerous times.
Good thing to save these to your computer or CD for future reference as this may disappear off Internet ... Again.

Now maybe you can see that USA is still owned by East India Company and The Crown / Queen of England, as well as rest of Monarchy world wide. Any country that they didn’t take over by religion, conquest or subversion is now being taken over by IMF, Wold Bank, WTO or some other agency they own or is party to East India Company and their plans.

This also means You are owned by them. If you don’t get this basic fact then go back again and learn, as many times as you need.
And before you say “bullshit” try looking into their original contracts to find out for yourselves.

G8 & G20, UN, EU etc. are nothing but agents for the bankers of East India Company / Committee of 300. You find them, as investors, and you have all the powerful ultra-rich idiots in one bag. I can assure you, as you can find out for yourselves, their families date back to Jewish Zionist traders whom crucified Jesus. Their trading system and corrupt culture date back to Babylon. Yes, the one that was destroyed by Gods. And yes, I surely meant plural.

Now maybe you can see why USA is being used to uphold and supply Illegal & Unlawful Israel and all wars taking place at present. Why EU has been started and AU is next.

The only option you have to save yourselves and your families and everyone else is to learn how to “discharge debt”.
See http://www.wssic.com/ or google Winston Shrout for how.
Then start a currency/money of your own based on cheap but secure money. As referenced in “Number 1:” and other parts of this and related threads.
OR find a place to hide from such a nefarious occult group

Oh, and the last choice is to stick your head between your knees like a good little sheep and kiss your ass good bye. I’m sure the shills would like that as it would make it much easier for them.

Keep in mind those sick puppy idiots want to decimate the population of earth down to 500 Million. They even brag about it:

And they certainly don’t care what tools they will use to accomplish it.

As it’s clearly evident in today’s news They have already started with the poorest countries on Earth. Those “crackpot wacko” zionist shills will keep on going and killing til they are fully and totally stopped.

Add “crackpot wacko” to the list of favorite terms used by the zionist shill, “inheret the wind,” in an attempt to scapegoat purveyers of accurate information and truth.

The question arises, how many Palestinians were rendered homeless and murdered last month, by relatives of “inheret the wind” ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnB8rTD0EJE

You will need to see it in full screen view with lots of pauses to get exact procedure. Or save it to your computer and follow it step by step. I’m sure you can find more if this is blocked or not working.

Best is still to go see your reputable stock trading house and get them to give you a print out on status of your Birth Certificate Account / Bond.

And an individual searching the legal wording of Birth Certificates:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoWD0R4Qhrg

@ITW: once wasn’t enough, eh? You come back for more punishment? To perpetrate your lies some more?
I thought science was around to continually update theories that can be replicated by anyone with such resources. Theories are only theories and not Natural Laws. Science has only just begun to comprehend them, while many with experience know them well.

We all know by now science is hard pressed to change since it’s funded by same Oligarchs who have been oppressing the population. Changing dates, artifacts and all other evidence as they choose to fit their occult agenda.
You want to put your neck on the line about Birth Certificates and your previous rants and lies?
Previously You were blatantly challenged and you ran away like a beaten dog with it’s tail between it’s legs
Angry yet? Ready to pull out your hair yet? Ready to present some counter evidence yet?

He never will.  He’ll merely clog the thread with more and more bullshit, and more and more insults against you.  You cannot argue rationally with a fundamentally irrational person.  He is as incapable of rational discussion as a pig is of learning to sing grand opera….As the old joke goes, you waste your time and annoy the object of your efforts…no more.

Remember: this guy claims that Carl Sagan was a friend of his but never read Sagan’s seminal work “The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle In the Dark” which completely DECIMATES all of this guy’s crap, and, more importantly, his “methodology”, if you can call it that.

Like GRYM, whenever you poke a big, fat hole in his argument and demand proof, he covers by saying “You have to do your research…YOU are ignorant”  I actually wasted time looking as his “sources”...they were, plain and simple, crap…like the people who saw a giant face on Mars and leapt to the belief that an alien race had built it—like “Intelligent Design” cretins.  All of his “data” is that crap that Sagan so eloquently showed did not qualify as scientific.

But you’ll get nowhere and I’ll bet a nickel the next post of his slathers all sorts of insults and aspersions on me…So?  I have to respect someone for his insults to hurt, you know?

LMAO ... Again you lie, as I have already presented more than enough evidence for anyone to check their Birth Certificate Bond Status, and it is your task, duty and/or obligation to disprove with facts and evidence, as in any court of Law. In this case Court of Public Opinion and/or Common Law with a jury of peers. Not Admiralty law as we clearly know it has and is committing extortion and fraud upon the public.

As you said “I’ve worked in and around the financial industry for most of the last 40 years, most recently as a sort of trading cop, ...” you know full well you have lied about Birth Certificates in this thread. Similar goes for “Inherit The Wind” and other dismissive and/or ignorant people in other threads.

Therefore it is You whom has to “Put up or shut up. “

What you need to seriously think about is whether or not I choose the option of exercising my Rights to see my accuser in court, or find your Lawfully binding info and take you to court. Maybe for trying to commit fraud upon the public?

If you haven’t heard, there have been numerous people that ended up in court, some in jail, for posting kind of lies and bullshit online as you have. I’d say you have some serious choices to make before you make your next comment.

Thank you for that most telling piece of information.
That’s what happens with compartmentalization, Therefore it seems you need to go back and do some basic research on NYSE about Birth Certificate Bonds.
What’s that number that starts with letter on Birth Certificate refer to? How-where-why as well ... as with any commerce and Admiralty Law document.
Your real education has just begun wink
In this instance a negative answer or asking more questions means you have not done your due diligence ... and you know what that means. Another-words, for everyone else in everyday language, don’t take my word for it .. do your Full research before answering.
I/we look forward to your full and comprehensive answer. Especially the amount in dividends each birth certificate makes per yr.
As you say “I’ve worked in and around the financial industry for most of the last 40 years, most recently as a sort of trading cop,” ... then you should have no problem finding out.

To everyone:
I notice one thing about many people on this website, whenever someone presents numerous facts and ideas they try to find that one talking point among them to shut him/her down. You people, and you know who you are, are fully integrated into the system of compartmentalization, with excuses of: oh nooo, I can’t look over there at that since it’s not my department ... in whatever way shape or form they put it.
Oh no, that can’t be true, and not doing any real investigating for themselves.
In internet terms you are being a “troll”, “sheeple”, “newbie” because you have the greatest library ever created on Earth right in front of your face.

Well guess what. As soon as you step out of your job door you become a Free Sovereign Being and not part of the system.
This means you have the Right to look at anything, especially things being kept secret from you by government and corporations. Most of you need to go back and study who you really are by way of ancient records ... or you are dong a disservice to yourselves, your families and community at large. You are creating or perpetuating voluntary slavery.

Did you know that your Birth Certificate is a Bond and is traded on the stock market, and in turn makes around 1 Million per yr?
Proof:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query
=birth+certificate+bond&aq=3&oq=birth+certificate
and here:
http://projectarise.com/debtelimprocesses.php
You can also go to any reputable stock company and they will verify your account/bond.

This certificate is there as the elites reach the age of consent or safety in case they fall flat on their face. They don’t tell you within a fiat money system you have the rights to claim it and/or use it for paying/discharging your outstanding debts [schooling, house/mortgage, land, car, etc.], to pay your essential service bills [water, hydro, telephone, internet, medicine, tools, etc.].
It can also be used as a money order. See above link.

I just gave you the greatest opener and talking point for any individual or community in need ... and still being Lawful and Legal.

It’s the same for any situation that you may run up against. There are remedies within the system or systems to make sure you have a choice.
They are big on choice just in case there is a God and may “smite” them .. all of them. This goes back to Babylon and most likely way before, back 240,000 or more yrs.

Nice thing about history. It’s all there if you dig deep enough. This is your hint in case you didn’t see it.

Did you know from history one can learn the original Laws of everything and everyone?
They are [in order]:
Universal Law - laws of the universe and everything in it
Natural Law - Laws of nature. life and everything inclusive
Sovereign Law - you and me and everyone
Common Law [for those who chose to be common people]
Law of Commerce / Admiralty Law / Law of the Seas
One is obligated to know these for any rightful and lawful action. This means you and everyone else needs to learn them to fight any corruption.

As we know the Admiralty / Governing / Corporate / Business / Banking system is based on lies and deception, as bad as any snake oil salesman.
You still have a choice to accept of reject anything. You just need to know how. Can’t do it without knowledge, can you?

It don’t matter what race, color or gender we are ... we are still men an women [lesson 1] under the same sky.

I don’t know what you know so Some examples:
- if this guy was wrong they would have busted him and beat the crap out of him there and then, camera or not.
Watch and learn carefully.

Druthers—What Robinson means by ‘big idea’ is something simple-minded enough to fit on a bumper sticker in large type.

Polls show that a large number, probably a majority, of Americans believe that they are or will wind up in the top 10% of the population financially, even though that’s arithmetically impossible.  So they are more concerned with tax cuts for the wealthy than they are with Social Security and Medicare.

Gabriel—there are any number of critiques of the behavior of the present ruling class and government.  Many of them are quite accurate.  There are a lot of reasonable suggestions as to what might be done about the problem as well.

Unfortunately, most people won’t look at the material.  If they do look at it, they won’t do anything about it.  Last week, four people called me up about participating in an activist thing I do; I told them how and where and urged them to come by.  None of them showed up.

Here among the proggies, radicals like myself are considered off the board, over the side.  Proggies want to work within the system.  After all, we could all get together and vote the bastards out.  Yet you won’t see any discussion of running people in primaries to take control of the Democratic Party, or of moving to a third (second?) party which would actually reflect their beliefs and desires.

If you know how to change this massive, ponderous, woebegone passivity, by all means bring it on.  Or if it’s on that ‘The Plan’ thing, tell me where.  We’re doing the agitprop already, but evidently we’re not doing it right; meanwhile the kleptos are robbing the train and the conservatives are running it off the cliff.  It’s all quite remarkable.

AN OVERARCHING VISION

ER: Conservatives are on a winning streak because they have a Big Idea that serves as an animating, motivating, unifying force. It happens to be a very bad idea, but it’s better than nothing—which, sadly, is what progressives have.

I’m not sure that the Conservatives are on a “winning streak” anymore and next year’s election will prove it or not.

But the above remark about the progressives is sadly true. Having looked at the offering, all I can see from that quarter of the political spectrum is a hodge-podge of sentiments and complaints - but no Overarching Vision. No Central Objective and certainly not focused upon a solidifying idea.

So, I‘d like to propose one – and it wont surprise anyone. It is called Income Disparity and from it, I suggest, flows most of the very serious ills that have befallen this once Great Nation.

Income Disparity is a fancy name for Income Unfairness, which is best personified by this info-graphic. Let me put that graphic into words: Only twenty-percent of American households obtain 93% of the nation’s Financial Wealth, whilst 80% of the rest of us share the remaining 7%.

So, why does the above provide progressives with an Overarching Vision of what’s wrong with America? Here are some reasons:
•  Marginal Taxation was brought down by Reagan from the elevated levels of 70/90 (as they were in the 1960s) upon coming to office. Upon leaving office they had been reduced to 30%. (See that historical fact here )
•  Taxation is the principle means of redistributing income. As the old Robin Hood saw goes, “Take from the rich and give to the poor”. Tax revenue enhancement is also an effective cure for our Chronic Debt.
•  Such revenues pay for, in Europe, such Public Services as a universal health care system that assumes the expense of both Preventive and Remedial Health Care. These revenues also pay of a Postsecondary Education (vocational, college, university) by which young adults obtain the skills to find durable jobs at decent wages. Other examples exist, but these two presently will do. They should do the same in the US.
•  Some studies show that if these taxes were re-imposed along with closing loophole deductions, Uncle Sam could mend quickly the problem of the National Debt.
•  Marginal Income and Capital Gains Taxation are the principal means of accomplishing a Balance Budget. Which will reduce the strain on the Treasury that pays the interest on Debt Maintenance. Yes, government expenditure reductions also will help as well - principally by reducing Defense Expenditures.
•  Without Stimulus Spending, Americans can expect (at best) a long and tedious exit from high unemployment or (at worst) a double-dip in the employment rate.
•  Most importantly, if Income Disparity is corrected by enhanced tax collections, then Stimulus Spending funds would become available to create jobs. Which is the standard economic response governments take to exit a recession.

True enough, there are also other problems that afflict America’s political governance:
•  A political class that has been compromised by lobbyists
•  A Supreme Court that is on the fringe of ethical responsibility in its decisions.
•  The revolving door in DC that compromises an effect regulatory oversight of industry and commerce.
•  A reluctance to confront the influence on National Spending by the M-I-C and reduction of DoD expenditures.
•  The privileges that have been accumulated to our political leadership in terms of compensation and exemption from legal pursuit.

These too need to be addressed in a Progressive Agenda – but, I submit, when presented Salami Style as above, they have no focus and are therefore less poignant.

Gabriel—‘agitprop’ is short for ‘agitation and propaganda’; see https://secure.wikimedia.org/wiktionary/en/wiki/agitprop.  There is also a Wikipedia article.  It is media designed to inform and convince people of your opinion, and get them to do something you want them to do.

Some people find the term ‘propaganda’ derogatory or offensive, so perhaps my use of the term should be taken as a bit ironical.  After all, we are almost a century away from the Ten Days That Shook The World, a serious revolution even if it did not turn out as well as its makers hoped, and it is clear that for better or worse the details have mostly been forgotten.

Mr. Robinson, you seem to suffer from the same affliction the rest of the msm
is prone to: the mirrored-room syndrome.

That is, the inability to see or hear anything or anyone that doesn’t appear in
your mirror - you know, those shiny, reflective things that cover all of the walls,
floors, ceilings and windows of the world you and your msm colleagues inhabit.

The problem isn’t that the “Republicans have a ‘Big Idea’ and the “progressives
have none.” How ridiculous. Only in the closed environment of the msm could
such an absurd statement be taken seriously.

The problem is that there is no Democratic opposition - or any kind of elite
opposition - to the basic premise this nation has been living with for the last 35
years: the rich are the great benefactors of any society, so whatever is good for
the rich is good for the world.

There are plenty of progressive ideas out there, I’ve been reading and hearing
them regularly in various alternative media outlets. And therein lies the
problem: only in the alternative media do such ideas and policies get any
airplay. And the alternative media must be sought out, unlike the msm, they
don’t automatically flow into every American’s home every evening at 6 pm.

The msm is closed to those alternative voices because they don’t represent the
agenda of the rich and powerful, i.e., neo-liberalism and, judging from your
column here, members of the msm themselves have no idea these alternative
sources even exist.

Yes, the Republicans have a “Big Idea” alright. Their “Big Idea” is to turn this
country into a 3rd World society in service to the rich. But that’s not the real
problem. For, if there were truly alternative voices heard, most people would
recognize the Republicans’ “ideas” for what the are: shallow bullshit.

It is the momentous failure of you and your colleagues in the msm to promote
the plethora of different alternatives to the neo-liberal agenda that fuels the
problem.

The US labor economy is a runaway train. In the last couple of decades corporate business practices have undergone a deep structural change.
Regardless of whether the company is legally American, all its transactions including hiring are global. Unlike the somewhat good old days when corporate profits and revenue would funnel back into the local community, a corporation’s profit and financial success have no necessary impact on the nation. Unregulated capitalism naturally leads to unfair distributions of wealth (monopolistic) and opportunity(out-sourcing). If some regulations are not put in place to limit this Darwinian ruthless bottom-line capitalism - unemployment will not roll back to prior one digit levels. In any case the deficit has nothing to do with any of it.

Not that the Dems are so opposed to the Repubs’ “big idea” either. The
President falls all over himself to promise no tax increases.

What the Repubs really have going are ideas that appeal to selfishness, and that
strategy tends to work very well in the context of a society that values self and
cash above all else. In essence, conservatives don’t really offer anything at all,
and so they’re rightly referred to as “the party of no.”

No is almost always easier, and lazier in reality, than yes. The big idea is, NO!
To everything, pretty much. Fear-mongering is the other tactic: forever look
out! The apocalypse is ALWAYS near. (Lakoff is partly right about need for
protective daddy.)

So, Big Idea: just say no and be very, very afraid.

Progressives are optimistic dreamers. Ideas are better, of course, but
more complicated, more expensive, and more reliant on genuine value of
compassion. Which all comes over as slightly corny when heroes are John
Wayne and Ron Reagan, both of them phonies, but that fact is irrelevant to
myth. (As all know, media plays its role in perpetuation of myth.)

The only difficulty the Repubs have is that they claim to subscribe to values and
so have to couch their monolithic no in terms of compassion—for instance the
claim that just saying no will create
jobs, especially just saying no to taxes.

Most important in the equation is the same old thing: ideology—belief in the
opposite of reality, that what is bad is good and what is good is bad. No is yes,
yes is no.

Which is why the problem is a whole lot stickier than what Boehner said vs.
what Obama said, especially when the two don’t really think all that differently.
Attitudes might differ more, but Dems appear just as happy to cut spending
and not raise taxes either. More than appear, the Dem Senate along with the
President refused to repeal Bush tax cuts. This is why the two parties barely
differ.

But for progressives who aren’t necessarily Dems, the message is almost
impossible in the given political-cultural climate, one that is still subject to red-
baiting and charges of bleeding heart and/or socialist or commie. It’s just
FASCINATING our collective fear of those, though that’s mostly a result of
ignorance. Speaking of which, ignorance too can be relied upon by Repubs.

It might be true that Repubs really were more moderate in the past, but I think
that claim overblown. (Since Lincoln anyway.) As is Dems largely imaginary—
more
and more—claim of concern for the worst off among us. (Since the Roosevelts-
-Franklin and Eleanor—anyway.)

As Robinson rightly notes, it’s impossible to get yes on a bumper sticker in
terms of more than number of letters. Conservatism in general has always had
an advantage—by definition. It doesn’t seek to progress but only to remain
static if not a pastoral return.

One irony is that it’s conservatives who like so much to talk about “hard work,”
when it takes really hard work to bring about change. Stasis or return is easy
work, indeed requires no work beyond minimal combatting of reason and
authentic values.

There’s an ethical problem at the heart of America and that problem is
maintained by the force of an overwhelming ideology that, as is true of all
ideology, involves a denial of reality that is not, perhaps cannot be, admitted,
especially when an ardent nationalist jingoism also informs the ideology, one
that, among other things denied, can’t even admit to the existence of class in a
claimed “free” country. How can problems be confronted when they can’t even
be admitted?

Ideology itself is even less likely ever to be admitted. Easy to see how just
saying no is by far the easier course of (non) action.

Once upon a time, the parts of the body had a debate as to which part was best fit to lead.

The brain insisted it was most intelligent.  The legs demonstrated they were most powerful and capable of travel.  The arms showed their ability to work and show love.  The hands presented their abilities and how they made humans distinct from all animals.  The stomach and intestines explained how they fed and satisfied the rest.  The lungs and heart provided a slide show about their role in energizing all other parts.  And the mouth talked and talked about its ability to communicate.

Without uttering a sound, the sphincter (aka Tea Party) in the nether area tightened up, plugged itself up solid ...................  NO COMPROMISE.

3 days later, all the other parts capitulated in agony.

So, unless the People stand up for their rights and push Government to do the right things nothing will happen.

Instead of blah blah bitchin’ let’s see some ideas and organization. Or am I the only one here that has the balls to propose such?

The debit limit and the deficit are really not the issue. It seems pretty clear that the Republicans, the White House, and many of the Democrats are using shock doctrine tactics to gut We the People and solidify the hold the rich have on power and wealth in this country.

If they were serious about the debt/deficit, the proposal put forward by the Progressive Caucus is more balanced and more effective than anything Boehner, Reid, or the White House have proposed. But there is no discussion of the Progressive Caucus’ proposal. Instead we are led to believe we must choose between a bad proposal and a worse proposal as if there are no other choices. Reminds me of the way we elect our government officials – almost always having to choose the lesser of two evils.

Everyone – the President, the Senate, and the House are simply ignoring the voices of the people.

The phone calls, faxes, emails, and petitions that have poured into Congressional offices, as well as the protests at offices and public buildings leave no doubt that none of the proposals being fought over reflect the will of the people. Yet those who are supposed to represent our best interests pay no attention to those messages and instead continue to work against us.

This is not democracy, if we ever had democracy; it is rather a corporate state, run by and for corporations. It is up to the people to decide if they are willing to live with that. If not, they need to decide just what they are willing to do to change it. Nothing is going to happen while they sit on their hands waiting for “someone” to do something.

“It´s about time readers here realized they are getting royally screwed. President is

Are you referring to the Kenyan-born imposter who doubled the U.S. debt in thirty
months? Who has spent two million of someones money covering up his birth records and
college transcripts? Who is reported to continue to be a citizen of Indonesia?  Who
is aligned with Zionists that manipulate the Federal Reserve, the world banking

The gist of your blog, that Americans are being abused by US leadership, cannot be
contested. However, I fail to find creditable evidence that the double-handful of
“rulers” of the Democrat party are less culpable than the WWII NAZI types (GHWBushSr
entourage) of the Republican party. Especially, when viewing the current “default on
the debt” propaganda. When the Zionist Federal Reserve borrows from itself, the
action is essentially paper-work, and “payment of interest” is an attempt to lift
money from the pockets of Americans in the lower four Socio-Economic-Strata,
carefully omitting the upper two S.E.S.

The idea of “preventing a default” is contrived propaganda, designed to engender the
concept of “hero for the American economy,” essentially frighten-up support for a
second term for the Kenyan fraud, the puppet of the Zionist-WWII NAZI combo. Time to
wise up. Time to clean out fraud, in both the Democrat and Republican parties. Time
to install only Americans in the U.S. Presidency.

Winning through ‘bumper sticker’ ideology is only possible if the people who believe it are woefully uneducated and ill informed about government.

I grew up in a politicized family and am shocked when I discover that a white, middle age, odd job laborer that I know believes that Social Security and Medicare are neutral programs that both parties wish to protect and both parties put on the chopping block as a ‘scare’ tactic.

Get it?  No sense of history, battles won or lost, nothing.

I must say there’s a revolution coming, a global one that will take out all the bankers and rest of the elites with them.

You may not see it on American TV but sure as chickens lay eggs it’s coming. Most people in EU, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Australia, Indonesia and the rest of this planet are REALLY pissed off. There’s protests everywhere. Even the happy go lucky Canadians are pissed off.

It’s only Americans that are passive this time as your media has been bought out by corporate shills. Watch and learn:

People in rest of the world seem to be much smarter and more educated than Americans. They actually fight for their services they paid for and their parents gave up their lives for.

What’s wrong with you Americans? You have the greatest documents on the planet about retaking your corrupt government and you’re not using them, as is your Right.

Now that’s shameful and actually disgusting to watch. In any other country there would be riots in the streets day after such bullshit proposals. By Monday there would be officials being brought up on charges.

Must be those chem trails and GMO foods they been feeding you.

@gstoddard
You are right in your analysis that the whole show in Washington is a disgrace and that for the past two years (many more really if you include the Bush years) the very real needs to develop the economy have been ignored.
You are wrong though to believe this silly debt ceiling talk was about the economy. It is not even about the tea party as such. It is about the republican party jockying for position to take over presidency from Obama next year. For that they need to get a grip on the tea party elected republicans and they need to discredit and stall the president and the democrats (which is all they have been doing for the past almost three years now, just oppose and demonise anything the president stands for even if it is something their own constituent would benefit from and would approve of).
That is what this whole song and dance routine is about. That is why deals that basically give them everything they asked for are rejected out of hand. They are playing a different game. Where the democrats try to achieve a deal to prevent the economy from tanking, the republicans are playing politics by moving the goalpost further back every time the democrats are moving a step forward.
This really returns us to the premise of the article, that the republicans have at least an idea while the democrats are only following, or drifting in the republican created storms. And likely it will have the desired result as well, as can be seen on fora like these: people are so angry at Obama ‘betraying’ them and doing what the republicans want that they are probably going to elect a republican next time just to spite him.

We are really seeing democracy at its worst in action where people are more concerned with the power and status than with the job they are elected to do, and yet another evidence of Douglas Adams’ truism that (paraphrased) ‘anybody who can get himself elected can not be trusted with the power that position grants him’.

I neither understand nor agree with this premise, that a Big Wrong Idea is better than No Idea. Nor do I agree that the conservatives are ‘winning’.

If their Big Wrong Idea is overturned, not accepted, they lose. But the country wins.

If their Big Wrong Idea passes, they may appear to ‘win’ in the short term. But the country will lose.

And if you believe in this nation, as I do, this country will survive the destructive influence of the conservatives and their Big Wrong Idea. And their exposure as being harmful to this nation will make them losers in the long term.

And the long term is what matters. Just remember, while thinking of the idiocy of the Goper/Tea Party,
‘This too shall pass’.

Perhaps the reason Democrats don’t raise a ruckus to stop the enormous financial drain of the wars is becaus most of the good jobs are to be found in the military-industrial complex, and stopping the wars cuts back on those jobs, raising the unemployment rate even higher.

They have no more idea how to dislodge this beast from the backs of the American people than do the politicians and the bankers. They lack the courage and the creativity of the Roosevelt era, and the Pentagon has no reason to complain.  Business as usual—even if it is a business that profits from killlng people—suits Wall Street and the Pentagon just fine, at least for the foreseeable future.

They have no respect for “the common man”—and why should they?—A spineless hoard of supine, self-deluded “losers” who cling to dreams of bygone days and smile idiotically as they view, slack-jawed and
empty-headed, the images of corporate sleeze winking

As a small businessman watching my sales fall off during this uncertain
economic environment I find the farce being played out in Washington
appalling. After all of the anguish and interminable arguments made during
these many months, nothing positive of significance has been accomplished.
The incompetence of the policymaking Washington elite is beyond stunning.

While the media and the public are distracted by the kabuki dance, the needs of
the nation are ignored. Millions are still unemployed, millions lack access to
reasonable health care, schools are failing, infrastructure is crumbling, income
and wealth inequality, that is a cancer in our national soul, is growing, and so
forth. China, Brazil, India and others grow their economies and strengthen their
international competitive positions while we refuse to deal with reality.

At 75 years of age I have lived through many national crises, some of which
were existential. I don’t recall a time when we intentionally created a self-
inflicted wound as hurtful and damaging to so many citizens as we have done
this year.

Now the Republicans, after walking away from a potential $4 trillion package to
address the deficit because it contained some revenue increases (increases that
most reasonable qualified observers say are necessary), are proposing a $1
trillion cut over 10 years so they can claim a political victory and embarrass the
president. It is a victory insuring the resumption of this farcical effort during
the holiday season. The Republicans are in the running to become the Grinch
who stole Christmas this year.

The needy and vulnerable are targeted for cuts in services and support while
the “job creators” sitting on their trillions of cash, don’t create jobs and are
protected from the obligation to participate in healing the economy. Our
legislators, most of who are millionaires, sit in their comfortable offices
protected from the negative consequences of their decisions.

Their biggest risk is that they might lose an election and have to move down
the street to a well-paid position with a lobbying firm.

What a country!

Conservatives are winning, because the American middle class voted for Obama

1. Doesnt care
2. Is really a Republican
3. Cannot lead but holds Democratic principles

It doesnt really mater does it, because Obama does not support our interests.

My question to you is: Why do we need the corrupt and insane and overwrought American government when we’ve got America itself? Is the point of the American government to RUN the country, or too CONTROL the money?
