How Violent Talk Blocks Sane Gun LawsPosted on Jan 13, 2011The slaughter in Tucson hasn’t shaken us out of bad political habits. Instead of promoting a sober conversation about the dangers of violent political talk, it has reinforced divisions between left and right. Even responsible conservatives have dismissed any suggestion that Saturday’s attack is reason enough to condemn the threats of violence that have become standard to the discourse at the extremes of their side of politics. More importantly: We have not focused at all on how the militarized rhetoric on the right is tightly connected to our national failure to enact the gun regulations that might have saved lives in Arizona. The descriptions of President Barack Obama as a “tyrant,” the intimations that he is “alien” and the suggestions that his presidency is illegitimate are essential to the core rationale for resisting any restrictions on firearms. The conversation of American conservatism is being shaped by the assumptions of the gun lobby to a much greater degree than mainstream conservatives should wish. For a long time, liberals hoped that by persuading opponents of gun control that we harbored no hostility to the vast law-abiding majority of gun owners—or to hunting or to rural culture—we might forge a consensus around rational firearms laws to protect innocents. Advertisement “The Second Amendment is not about hunting deer or keeping a pistol in your nightstand,” the Texas Republican declared in 2006. “It is not about protecting oneself against common criminals. It is about preventing tyranny. The Founders knew that unarmed citizens would never be able to overthrow a tyrannical government as they did. ... The muskets they used against the British army were the assault rifles of that time.” And at a Washington rally last year on the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., linked this view to the current occupant of the White House. “Fellow patriots, we have a lot of domestic enemies of the Constitution, and they’re right down the Mall, in the Congress of the United States—and right down Independence Avenue in the White House that belongs to us,” he declared. “It’s not about my ability to hunt, which I love to do. It’s not about the ability for me to protect my family and my property against criminals, which we have the right to do. But it’s all about us protecting ourselves from a tyrannical government of the United States.” Is it any wonder that the gun lobby argues that restricting high-capacity magazines is just one step down the road to dictatorship? Let’s salute Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., for breaking with gun-lobby orthodoxy by suggesting legislation that would make it illegal to carry a weapon within 1,000 feet of elected or high-ranking federal officials at publicly announced events. But by Broun’s logic, isn’t King’s proposal just a way for big government’s servants to protect themselves from, shall we say, accountability? And if the rest of us ask for comparable protection, this just proves to gun control’s opponents that any single restriction leads down a slippery slope to eviscerating all gun rights—and, eventually, to tyranny. Of course most conservatives don’t subscribe to Broun’s theory. What I don’t understand is why the highest priority of so many who are not Brounites has been to resist any questioning of far-right rhetoric by pretending that doing so is the equivalent of holding those who speak that way responsible for what someone else did. No. Jared Loughner, the accused killer, is accountable for his own actions. His politics are confused at best and he clearly has mental health problems. That is what most liberals are saying. But, yes, this is the time to acknowledge that there is something deeply wrong with the militarization of American conservative rhetoric. Doing so is not—and there are many problems with the term—what Sarah Palin has called a “blood libel.” The approach to guns, violence and “tyranny” promoted by loud voices on the right has been instrumental in blocking measures that could at least have contained the casualties in Tucson—or at Virginia Tech or Columbine. Extremism in defense of feeble gun laws is no virtue. E.J. Dionne’s e-mail address is ejdionne(at)washpost.com. New and Improved CommentsWe are launching a major overhaul of our comments section. ThomasG’s Answer: Your claim that the average citizen is too ignorant and stupid to analyze information for content and use defined by three words: BINARY — EMOTIONAL— and RHETORIC, is ludicrous.
The following link is to a educational website inspired by The Institute for Propaganda Analysis:
http://www.propagandacritic.com/articles/intro.ipa.html
I can understand why a propagandist would want to hide understanding of propaganda analysis behind complexity, and that is a self serving choice made by propagandists.
However, propaganda analysis based upon three words, binary— emotional— and rhetoric is simple and easy enough that propaganda analysis can be done effectively by all citizens, whether they are above or below average citizens, or just average citizens.
Why is it that you are trying to frame propaganda analysis as being beyond the ability of average citizens ? This sounds like you have an interest in maintaining the effectiveness of propaganda, rather than the understanding of propaganda.

numbnuts, Your statement that, “The violence you mention against progressives is not perpetrated by honest or sane people” is true more or less.
In Tuscon, and across the nation however, we seem to be witnessing a growing number of gun plays emanating from Right Wing extremists who are also unstable. They are most-likely responding to militant dog whistles sounded by the Tea Party. The Tea Party is thus throwing meat at already starving dogs… and the violence should have been predicted by them.
Finally we see the Tea Party in a tight spot. It used its exciting lingo to stoke a huge set of victories last November, but now the lingo is exploding in its hands. Thus do the populist Republicans walk a thin line between excitement to murder and much lessor performance in 2012.
An interesting but dangerous situation.

Ok. The only problem with your analysis is that these techniques, used on the average citizen, are statistically effective. Citizens simply do not have the training to deconstruct what is happening to them, and there is zero probability that such training will be available in the near future.
Your responses are essentially theoretical… interesting but unrelated to operations on the ground.

To aacme88,
Re: your quote, “..whacked out right-wingers with assault rifles,” as with nearly all authors and Progressive posters on Truthdig, Alternet and sim., you are unwilling to comprehend that NONE of the guns, with the rare exception of Israeli Uzis in the clutches of gang members, used in crimes is an “assault-weapon,” “assault-rifle,” “automatic-handgun.” Assault weapons are automatic fire-capable. Auto-LOADERS sold in the US are merely that, one round is fired, it ejects for new round and sits there until trigger is squeezed again. This is true as well for Sen.Dianne Feinstein’s hysterical and long-lasting rants about “assault-weapons.” None of the guns listed in her hit-list was assault capable. All were store-bought autoloaders only, the more modernistic ones held up in the air to show how dangerous they looked. In fact, most of these are far less lethal than regular handgun defense loadings for a .44-Special, 357, 45ACP or the 38-Super. The Senator was too lazy throughout her one-year campaign to end self-defense in America, to bother looking at the ammunition advantage held by old handgun designs over the fancy plastic poppers about which she was shrieking. Now Sen.Schumer wants to put the icing on Feinstein’s cake by forcing all Americans to carry a biometric national identity card.

Paolo-
Good comments. Remember, though, that there is no such thing as “anti-gun.” In truth it is “anti-gunowner.” The same holds true for the intentional misnomer, “defense-spending.” It is merely common and base “military-spending.” Code-words like these abound, as in the media-adopted company-line “roadside bomb.” These are not roadside anything, these things are massively powerful landmines, capable, often, of stopping a 65-ton tank cold. Pretty words make pretty wars. Afghanistan, you have not suffered enough yet. Give it a few more years.
Finally re: gunowners-rights: the young women who, increasingly, are arming themselves and receiving competent training and practice: are Truthdig-liberals (also a mis-label, sorry) anxious to tell these good women they will not be able to protect themselves from the rampant swarm of sexual predators?

ThomasG’s Answer: If you want to deweaponize Psy-Ops, it can be done by the targeted populations of Psy-Ops employing Propaganda Analysis, and Propaganda Analysis consists of three basic tenets, binary choice—emotional choice— and rhetoric, language used to lead others to a conclusion to accept one of the two choices and reject the remaining choice.
“The Institute For Propaganda Analysis” was originated for this purpose and “The Institute For Propaganda Analysis” developed seven different forms of propaganda as follows:
1. Name Calling,
2. Glittering Generality,
3. Transfer,
4. Testimonial,
5. Plain Folks,
6. Card Stacking, and
7. Band Wagon
The common thread in all of these differing forms of propaganda is that they all involve binary choice, emotional choice, and use language that lead others to a conclusion to accept one of the two choices and reject the remaining choice.
The solution to Psy-Ops is the same as it was in the World War II Era, PROPAGANDA ANALYSIS.

You are a thoughtful man. For bkg, I was a lifelong Democrat until it became clear Dems had three agendae: avoid winning at any cost, project emotion-based policy goals (no research, as per the anti-gunowner hysteria), and misrepresent to voters that their foe is right-wing conservatives. Conservatives of the two major Parties are mostly extinct. What Democrats are doing with Republicans is called symbiosis, and like their analog, parasitic algae, their seesaw of monetary gain merely shifts from one pole to the other. The violence you mention against progressives is not perpetrated by honest or sane people. If this is true, gun-laws in any form become irrelevant. Actually, hundreds of violent crimes each year are stopped by responsible armed citizens, multiples more than the # of your fellow Dems who are harmed. The anger which may tip a marginally sane man to shoot anyone involve, in my view, two things: 1)racism against a black President during a time of changing demographics and 2)violence routinely perpetrated against the world via our foreign policy people.
I would rather have Progressives/liberals/Democrats get everything they want through strength than see the government atrophy.

What you have said may indeed represent what is happening on the Left, but it is disconnected from the surge of Right Wing murders. Allow me to explicitly state what is causing these murders. I have very little time here.
You need to aggressively deconstruct the communication operations that are being run against American Conservative Populists within the Republican Party.
The primary tool that is used by extremely capable Propagandists on the Right is Political Psychological Operations. Poly PsyOps was developed during the cold war, and it was long-ago turned on the American people by the most sophisticated PsyOp professionals in the world. (British experts first developed rudimentary PsyOps in dividing and manipulating demographically differentiated populations during the development of their Empire, and they perfected basic techniques during WWII while training Americans)
Do a search on Frank Luntz’s company theworddoctors.com to get a quick look at the profile of a moderately TOP LEVEL player in this field. Luntz is useful to Right Wing PsyOps users because his personality is videogenic. Yet he IS NOT a fully top of the line supplier. Fully elite consultants run in stealth mode but are not impossible to locate. Luntz gives the FACE of American PsyOps a friendly veneer… it is ACCEPTABLE.
Note: The American Right Wing includes substantial numbers of PsyOp professionals because of its deep bond with the US military and Intelligence communities. Very substantial sums are spent training and experiencing PsyOp experts inside the DIA and CIA. These two agencies are the primary breeding ground for Domain Experts who operate a level or two above Luntz. The American Left is far behind.
The REALITY is that these latest murders in Tuscon are simple blow BLOW BACK from PsyOps run by the American Right targeting Conservative Populists. The destabilized murderer is as much a victim as are the corpses that he left behind.
Most useful to a full understanding of the Operational Map is that Corporate Power is not particularly interested in the details of Right Wing PsyOps, as LONG AS THEY DO NOT INTERFERE WITH ITS PROFIT HARVEST IN THE UNITED STATES. Presently Corporate Media is busy tamping down the fires, lest they unleash a Black Swan event. Such an event would be extended GUN PLAY among competing political factions… something that could damage Bottom Line processes.
See typical DOD PsyOp (non-stealth) here:

If my statement here is unclear… CHALLENGE ME.

Christina Taylor Green was not the first 9 year-old recently murdered in Arizona. The fact the you do not know this points directly to ongoing and sophisticated censorship by American Corporate Media. Ron Paul’s quotation in the middle of this story is quite accurate. The Second Amendment was primarily enacted as a way of guaranteeing that citizens would be able to resist tyranny on the part of their own government. Secondarily, they would also be part of the citizen militia that could be called upon to help resist foreign invasion.
Tyrants are quite fond of gun control. Hitler, Mao, Stalin, and Castro all enacted strict gun-control laws. According to Founder Richard Henry Lee, the citizenry itself should comprise an armed force superior to any standing army the central government might field.

In any case that’s not how you make statistical generalizations. There are a number states, and countries with tight gun laws and low gun-related crimes.
Switzerland makes no such case.

The suicide note stated, “Violence is not only the answer, it is the only answer…”

THE RIGHT WING MURDER CAMPAIGN… WILL IT NEVER END?
supermike1661 Version 1.1 updated on 1/15/2011
Post this list far and wide. Corporation Media does not want you to know.
—July 2008: A gunman named Jim David Adkisson, agitated at how “liberals” are “destroying America,” walks into a Unitarian Church and opens fire, killing two churchgoers and wounding four others.
—October 2008: Two neo-Nazis are arrested in Tennessee in a plot to murder dozens of African-Americans, culminating in the assassination of President Obama.
—December 2008: A pair of “Patriot” movement radicals—the father-son team of Bruce and Joshua Turnidge, who wanted “to attack the political infrastructure”—threaten a bank in Woodburn, Oregon, with a bomb in the hopes of extorting money that would end their financial difficulties, for which they blamed the government. Instead, the bomb goes off and kills two police officers. The men eventually are convicted and sentenced to death for the crime.
—December 2008: In Belfast, Maine, police discover the makings of a nuclear “dirty bomb” in the basement of a white supremacist shot dead by his wife. The man, who was independently wealthy, reportedly was agitated about the election of President Obama and was crafting a plan to set off the bomb.
—January 2009: A white supremacist named Keith Luke embarks on a killing rampage in Brockton, Mass., raping and wounding a black woman and killing her sister, then killing a homeless man before being captured by police as he is en route to a Jewish community center.
—February 2009: A Marine named Kody Brittingham is arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate President Obama. Brittingham also collected white-supremacist material.
—April 2009: A white supremacist named Richard Poplawski opens fire on three Pittsburgh police officers who come to his house on a domestic-violence call and kills all three, because he believed President Obama intended to take away the guns of white citizens like himself.
Poplawski is currently awaiting trial.
—April 2009: Another gunman in Okaloosa County, Florida, similarly fearful of Obama’s purported gun-grabbing plans, kills two deputies when they come to arrest him in a domestic-violence matter, then is killed himself in a shootout with police.
—May 2009: A “sovereign citizen” named Scott Roeder walks into a church in Wichita, Kansas, and assassinates abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.
—June 2009: A Holocaust denier and right-wing tax protester named James Von Brunn opens fire at the Holocaust Museum, killing a security guard.
—February 2010: A software engineer furious with the Internal Revenue Service launched a suicide attack on the agency by crashing his small plane into an office building containing nearly 200 IRS employees, setting off a raging fire, killing two. HOW TO DO MURDER FROM AFAR… ACCIDENTALLY
Let us assume that there really ARE such things as highly sophisticated PR campaigns that go awry on occasion. How do they start, and how do they end?
Such campaigns ALWAYS BEGIN with an analysis of the undefined FORCES IN THE MIND of the target population. Via highly controlled focus group analyses, the Undefined becomes Defined.
A sophisticated PR operation, FOX NEWS CHANNEL is one, has a complete analysis of these Forces. It MIGHT be a controlled distribution, 542 page, spiral bound notebook AND NEVER A COMPUTER FILE!
Once the natural Forces in the Target’s mind are defined, for example, “my culture is being polluted by immigrants”, then a Narrative can be applied to that Pollution Force that operationalizes it… makes it USEFUL for POLITICAL OPERATIONS.
A Narrative line might be, “immigrants are destroying the Concept of Christmas”.
As I drive this Narrative over the years, I condition the anger that is ALREADY in the Target’s mind. I CONDITION it so that this anger can be CONNECTED to OTHER Forces that ARE NOT in the Target’s mind… “Obama” for instance.
Obama is an Immigrant… ergo, Obama is “destroying” Christmas.
In this way I take natural, free floating anger, and shape and direct it. If this were a real story, it now has a fatal flaw… at least it would be fatal to anyone but a real PR professional… like say Mr. Roger Ailes.
^^^^^^The little flaw in this technique is that occasionally a disturbed gunman who is ultra-sensitive WILL BE DRIVEN OVER THE TOP TO MURDER. This is understood and accepted by the PR professional… these are “acceptable losses” to him.^^^^^^
A complete analysis of the Anger Forces for the United States Right Wing will cost a few hundred thousand dollars, and needs to be updated Quarterly via subscription. A top-of-the-line expert on the American middle class, Frank Luntz for example, will charge a Million.
If such campaigns really existed they would be very valuable to people who needed to MOBILIZE already angry Americans. Such campaigns would be the pride and joy of great media owners. These campaigns might be the real POWER that such owners manifest….. no chaos, no chance, just STATISTICALLY ANALYZED FOCUS GROUPS WITH plus or minus 5 percent accuracy.
keep on blogging… your grandchild will be asking you what you DID for her when she was in grade school…. before they made her carry her permanent GPS smart-phone for HER counter-terrorism safety.

It is TRUE THAT THERE IS NO CORPORATE CONSPIRACY.
The truth of CORPORATE power is less obvious.
Like the Laws of Physics that bind an Electron to the Nucleus, the Corporation was OPENLY designed to ACT openly for its secret FUNDERS… who control it. Thus we see the true FUNDER-face of Goldman-GE and its Saudi Princeling Partners.
It IS the FUNDERS WHO CONSPIRE COVERTLY while their CORPORATE robots OPENLY manipulate political systems and entire populations… for the continuous enhancement of the FUNDER’S bottom-line.
More instructive is how outdated philosophies bind Corporate supporters TO the Robots. The foolishly dependent Western Middle Classes are presently sentencing their children to centuries of servitude in competition with the Slaves of China. The corporate FUNDERS will grow evermore wealthy, as the Children of Western Middle Classes are so enslaved in competition with the FUNDER’S Chinese Corporate Robots. Thus do the Paid Supporters of Corporate Power sentence their progeny to dark centuries of servitude as foretold by George Orwell.

But for those with domain knowledge about PR processes, we can ask what is the present situation on the ground?
The Positional Propaganda Game has stabilized. Glenn, Sarah and Rush are now pushed back on their heels, and they will temporarily moderate.
HOWEVER, The Right and its FUNDERS, from Saudi Princes to Goldman-GE, are now ADDICTED to the political gains that they made in the last cycle by Incitement to Murder. Because The Right’s FUNDERS are experiencing an ever-shrinking Base (white people mostly), they MUST continue to aggressively incite those shrinking forces. THIS MEANS MORE MURDERS… A CONTINUATION OF THE SLAUGHTER THAT BEGAN VIA THEIR INCITEMENT IN 2008. (Someone please post the Murder List.)

This country is at a milestone of dysfunction. Chris Hedges (who is strangely silent since the Tuscon event), has continually claimed the electoral process to be impotent. The corporatocracy has disenfranchised the middle class and lower. It is a kind of capitalist elite monarchy telling the masses to eat cake. Historically the event that signaled the beginning of Western democracy was the French Revolution. It was a violent essentially left-wing revolution - a toppling of the elite centers of power to place them in hands of the people - particularly the working class - the proletariat. It understood ‘Liberté, égalité, fraternité,’ to drive what we have written into our constitution as the essentials of democracy.
Report thisNorhing about that humanistic revolution determined that democracy should be associated with an economic system like capitalism. Ir reads like any socialist manifesto and it isn’t surprising that Europe has evolved into a political system that is far to the left of the US.

Let me start by saying I am a bit of a minority in that I am a democrat that supports gun right’s…including concealed carry, though I do not currently have a permit. I have heard people criticize Arizona’s concealed carry law in a few discussions surrounding last weekends events. To my knowledge, Jarad did not have a concealed carry permit, so I am not sure why that is even being mentioned. My question is what ‘reasonable’ gun law revision(s) would have prevented this tragedy? Should we require psychological tests now before one can purchase a firearm? If so, who would/should pay for that? Should gun sellers be required to perform YouTube and Facebook searches before selling a gun to see if, like Jarad, they’ve posted any unusual postings? As Jon Stewart pointed out, Peter King’s 1,000 feet restriction proposal is laughable. How would people know when a politician is within 1,000 feet of them? Since it is fairly well known that killing someone is already a crime, the most obvious problem with any proposed gun law is this: SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO KILL YOU, DOES NOT CARE ABOUT VIOLATING A GUN LAW! Which brings me back to concealed carry. As a former police officer in a state that allows concealed carry, I had no problem with the law. A person who was going to take the time to fill out the required paperwork, pass the background check, and take the 40 hour safety class, was not the person I typically needed to worry about. They are almost always law abiding citizens, and law abiding citizens don’t usually kill people since…well…it’s against the law. It was the person who was willing to carry the gun WITHOUT the permit that I was most concerned with.

With our economy inching towards a world economy and the supremacy of our own country declines we should consider what might happen as other countries take on the behavior patterns of our own.
Can we imagine a time when Mexico has a fleet of drones controlled from some undisclosed site, perhaps in Mexico, but perhaps in Guatemala or Honduras?
Might a gun dealer in San Diego or perhaps in Phoenix seem a legitimate terrorist target from Mexico’s viewpoint? If a few dozen civilians were killed as collateral damage, well that’s just the cost of dealing with terrorists.

And even the conspiracy theorist, sociologist, psychologist Henry Makow in his site http://www.henrymakow.com wrote an article about the lack of love between couples, the destruction of families, the hatred of children against their parents, parents against their children, hatred between family members. And how many american women are becoming real evil and resentful against male, with the fascist-feminist movement, a war to destroy american males.

Time to look past conservative and liberal labels,
capitalist ploys to divide the workers. Obama is a
member of the ruling class and anyone who supports
his government now that it has shown his true colors
is just as “conservative” as any republican.
“- Joseph Stack flew his plane into the IRS building

Justifiable class warfare. The IRS exists only to

“- It’s liberals who burn down Hummer dealerships.”
Those weren’t “liberals” they were people fed up with

“nonviolent protest” which really means inaction.
Hummers are built by corporate wage-slavers for the

oppressed. They encourage over consumption and ruin
the environment. Justifiable class warfare.
“- It was progressive SEIU union thugs who beat a
black conservative man who
spoke his mind.”
Any “conservative” that speaks his “mind” is brain
washed by the establishment to speak out against his
own interests. They accomplish this through fear,
making people believe that they are in danger of
having their jobs shipped out when unions demand fair
pay and reasonable conditions. Without force Unions
and the entire Progressive movement would never have
been born and the establishment would be much closer
to outright imperialistic capitalist oligarchy.
“- It was a liberal who was sentenced to two years

The government is the one who upped the ante. If it
hadn’t crushed the passive protest movement
(inevitable in hindsight) then few would be tempted
to violently overthrow the evil ruling class, they’d
pursue the peaceful option as long as it’s
realistically possible.
“- It was a liberal who threatened to kill a
government informant who infiltrated
her Austin-based group that planned to bomb the RNC.”
Informants are establishment supporters and thus part
of the wage slave system. As the resistance has no
jails only force can be used against traitors.

For anyone who wants to ban weapons: it’s easy to
find anything the establishment “bans.”
The government knows they can’t make anything
disappear with prohibition, a “ban” is more like
adding an extra secret tax while simultaneously
forcing people to become outlaws and thus eventually
slaves by forcing them to use underground methods to
get what they want. This almost always leads to the
“criminal” being registered into the convict slave
class through arrest. The government spends more and
makes more in any prohibition, thus increasing its
power. It also leads to fuller prisons and thus
higher corporate profits for the prison related
industries. Millions of people who would otherwise
have full rights are becoming permanent members of
this underclass where the government has more power
to control your life.
Consider the war on drugs, the government not only
profits off seizures and black market deals with 3rd
world countries (iran-contra affair anyone?) but puts
itself in a position where it can define millions as
“felons” simply for drug use and restrict their
access to weapons, voting, and foreign travel. In a
way, the government does the same thing with weapons.
It restricts the people’s access to weapons, defining
anybody who seeks competitive, modern weapons for
self or community defense or insurance against
tyranny as a criminal and thus placing them in the
convict slave class. Simultaneously, the government
oppresses and profits with these same weapons! The
last weapons we have access to are simple rifles and
shotguns, even pistols are partially prohibited to
adults as you have to be 21 to legally purchase one.
This issue in some ways resembles the economic
situation. The wider the gulf between the haves and
have-nots with money, the bolder the establishment
becomes in its thievery, justifying “bail outs” for
the upper classes while the poor have less than ever.
It can accomplish this only through fear, the people
are so afraid that the system they have become
dependent on is dying that they willingly give up
their own money to the government gangsters.
Similarly the government, with its widening,
unmatched superiority in deadly weapons is now
becoming so bold it is attempting to justify stealing
or regulating the arms of common men for our security
against uncommon criminals. This has nothing to do
with crime, but everything to do with power. The
government wants the last of our real power destroyed
so it can pave the way for pure imperialistic
oligarchy. The wider the gulf between the “haves” and
“have-nots” with weapons, the less freedoms the
common man will be able to preserve. The government
can only accomplish this prohibition, like any other,
through fear, in this case of crime. Well I say to
you, crime is not to be feared if your community
knows how to defend itself. I fear a government
monopoly on weapons, which can only lead to tyranny
and persecution.
SuperMike1661: I am willing to die to secure the

The Tuscon Murders are Only the latest Wet Operation of Right Wing Gun Slingers. (or… wake up barbieque)

Keep your gun, but wake up to who is trying to manipulate you.

Nice post. But does it mean that your fellow gun owners ARE NOT killing my fellow Lefties by the arm full since the financial crisis of 2008?
Keep your eye on the ball. Somebody is inciting destabilized gunmen to murder for some reason.

Yea, it’s cool to be distant and disparaging.
Now, if you are an American, you can still help your country by asking basic questions: example: Which part of the political spectrum owns the huge majority of guns? Which political propagandists incite destabilized gun OWNERS to USE guns on other Americans?
Keep it simple at first, and you will find that Maddow is wrong. There is an underlying use and manipulation of gun owners… a manipulation that very few of them are aware of.
Suggestion: Ask yourself why the Right is so busy Murdering the Left ever since the financial crises of 2008?
There is a reason that Rachel Maddow was hired by the largest manufacturing company in the world to hawk left wing views. Ask yourself what that reason might be.

With his “..blocking measures that could at least have contained the casualties in Tucson,” author Dionne is puking up his usual emotion-based slop, not bothering to do ten minutes worth of research. On what is he basing his goofy statement? An autoloader, such as the Glock used by the nutjob, is NOT an automatic weapon. Popping in a fresh clip is barely faster than my speedloader reload of my old revolver. A high-capacity magazine, as one said to have used by the loon, is no more effective for the shooter than carrying several loaded regular/stock clips and popping them in to reload. This is easily understood by anyone who has learned to shoot. Note that neither the military nor police departments issue extra long clips to their personnel. Finally, States such as Vermont, which don’t even require a carry-permit, have a very low incidence of gun-violence.
As for writer Dionne, I am at least gratified that the Eraserhead baby grew-up healthy and has found steady, though misguided, employment.

Rachel Maddow was right the other night: it is not possible to have any sort of rational discussion regarding “gun control” in this country.
As evidence of this being true, may I submit the previous several comments from other readers- none of which are either rational or logical.
Small wonder that “gun nut” has become part of the American lexicon.
Keep peddling! You’re getting better and better at going in circles!

Based on my recent visit to the County Fairgrounds monthly Gun Sell, the overwhelmingly huge hoard of guns are in the hands of Right Wing zealots. So these are YOUR PEOPLE. Not only are they YOUR people, they are being teased into a frenzy by YOUR Propagandists.
What I see is that all of your “Citizen” Posturing is simply a cover story to shield the ongoing slaughter of my fellow Left Wingers… who by in large do not own vast armories… as YOUR people do.
As a result of the Tuscon Slaughter, I am preparing for the fist time now to buy a weapon for personal protection. The blood bath that you pray for is probably on its way. When some Right Wing pol is shot down by some armed and dangerous Lefty… do not be surprised. You are actually begging for it.
NO! Better you should restrain YOUR people BEFORE the blood bath begins.

Peter King is just the kind of moron that is dangerous, to himself and others, by being so incredibly stupid and shortsighted.
Let me give you two reasons why we really need people to have the right to bear arms. Its very simple:
1. As they prove time and time again, the government is NOWHERE when it comes to protecting people. That situation is getting worse with many police stating publicly, as policy, that they will no longer respond to calls to homes. YOU may not care about your own safety, but if you have a family you must ask yourself what you would do.
Security measures that grab people’s genitals, do NOTHING to make people safer. That was recently proven by an airline pilot, acting on his own, to inform people. No containers are searched and the border is not secure.
That also means if someone, god forbid, came after Mr. Peter King, and the government was not there to protect him, like they often are not, but I expect it depends upon who you are, there would be no law-abiding, armed citizen that could save him. He would be a sitting duck.
2. The second reason its important, is that, with a citizenry that is unarmed, the rogue elements of governments, up and down the spectrum, are at liberty to act without any restraint. If 911 proved anything its that people will bring down a terrorist with their bare hands if they can, and they would do much better armed. But if that terrorist is a rogue actor, sent from within, for whatever reason, and this is part of history now in many cases already declassified, then those interests would certainly want to support unreasonable disarming of the American people.
The way it is. I wish everyone was non-violent, but disarming the sane and honest is not the way to go.

[disclaimer: I am British, so am writing as an outsider]
As far as I can see, one of the original aims of the Second Amendment was to protect communities and the federal state from ggressive incursion. Allowing people to bear arms seemed to be to be implied within the confines of a “well regulated militia”, though apparently the US Supreme Court has ruled on the more precise meaning of “to bear arms” in recent times and extended the definition to include situations ouside of that. It was reasonable to expect people to be able to defend themselves against aggressors in a time when the nation was young and the risk of invasion was great. But when did anyone last try to invade America?
America is a different place now. Unfortunately, the nation seems to be paralysed by mistrust, anæsthetised in a miasma of paranoia. It is a debilitating paranoia that leaves some people insisting that the enemy is their own government. And while that paranoia (and its underlying causes) are left unchecked, then these events will simply continue. In the UK, for exmaple, levels of anger about the actions of the current government are very high, but the rhetoric of considering our leader “alien”, or thinking of the government as our sworn enemy are almost unthinkable. We may think of them of stupid, misguided or even just as idiots, but “illegitimate” or “alien”? No.
Meanwhile the rest of the world looks at you with sadness as, although there is much to admire and love about the principles on which your nation was built, its current state is diseased and sick. We, your friends, wish that your current problems were not so, but I’m afraid things are looking bleak for you.

BarbieQue your gun is your own affair. However the proven INCLINATION that Right Wingers have to USE their guns on my political compatriots has now crossed the line.
If you refuse to acknowledge that Right Wing Gunman are murdering us at an ever increasing rate, then finally we of the Left will arm ourselves. We will come for you as you continue to come for us. So you have a choice NOW.
We on the left do not have these massive storehouses of guns… yet. We on the Left do NOT have the inclination to USE guns as political tools…YET.
Decide.

Marshall makes the extremely egregious error of focusing on Rhetoric…NO!
The issue here is MURDERS. Marshall’s people have the GUNS and the INCLINATION to use them. Marshall’s people are easily ACTIVATED by Rush and Sarah and Glenn.
Our people on the Left (presently) do NOT have the guns… nor do they have the inclinaion to use such weapons.
Keep it up Marshall. By ignoring the ongoing MURDERS of your ilk, you are pushing the Left to Arm. Then we will see how you like a REAL blood BATH as apposed to your current blood LETTING.

The partisans attempting to score gun control points via the tragedy on Saturday maybe should read Gabrielle Giffords position on Gun Rights:
“...Giffords supports gun rights.[60] She opposed the Washington D.C. gun ban, signing an Amicus curiae brief with the U.S. Supreme Court to support its overturn.[60][61]...”

Did it ever occur to that loudmouth sheriff (who apparently decides which laws to enforce by himself) to provide security at a public gathering for a Congressperson?

“Is it any wonder that the gun lobby argues that restricting high-capacity
magazines is just one step down the road to dictatorship?”
Screw dictatorship. Restricting high-capacity magazines is just plain an
ineffective waste of time and money. It’s easily defeated and there’s no more
evidence it would reduce casualties than there is that it wouldn’t increase them
(two guns instead of one).
I don’t think it’s being totally honest to single out right wing-nuts over left
wing-nuts, who’s violent rhetoric as often strays out of bounds as I recall it
often did during Bush’s tenancy. The right is blamed for maps with cross-hairs
despite the existence of predecessors on the left. But I also fail to see why it’s
all of a sudden time to single out the right because of the actions of an
apolitical psychopath whose intended victim happened to be a member of the
left (and a relatively conservative one at that)? I agree that rhetoric can cross
lines of acceptability. The right happens to own the gun issue thus making it an
easy… dare I say “target”... for those who want to paint the conservative cause
as being violent at the core (and by inference, a placid and peaceful left), but it’s
not true.
Overtly violent rhetoric should be condemned wherever it appears.

THE BUILDING WAVE OF RIGHT WING MURDER
This from poster JEP from another site:
• July 2008: A gunman named Jim David Adkisson, agitated at how “liberals” are “destroying America,” walks into a Unitarian Church and opens fire, killing two churchgoers and wounding four others.

In democracy, extremism in defense of anything doesn’t work. Democracy is built around, and depends upon, the idea that for every problem there are reasonable and equitable solutions that can be arrived at through honest sharing of different opinions and reasoned argument.
One big problem is that our culture is not democratic; furthermore, at present it actively discourages democracy. So democracy has become not much more than a sanctimonious pretense from a wrongly hallowed past. What’s democratic about 90% of the wealth and power being owned by 2 or so % of the population? What’s democratic about thousands of sick people not getting proper medical care? About teachers being maligned and schools crumbling in inner cities? What’s democratic about banks taking homes from children whose fathers can’t find jobs?If the power structure refuses to serve the people, the country disintegration.
Report thisIf the media refuse to serve the people by helping them understand their situatioin, and to get their grievances aired and discussed, if the media and the police treat complaints as disloyalty, what are people to do but get angry?
These are key issues—and there are others—which beg for honest discussioin and open ways to foster freedom of information and clarity about ways to redress grievances so that wrongs do not fester.
Our problems are fully solvable without guns and violence, and the media and the government itself (including law enforcement) have very necessary roles in helping to forward the discussion and dissention necessary to bringing solutions about. They, too, need to be called to account.
It seems to me that the people are doing just about as well as they can under the circumstances. They need their government and private agencies to step up to the plate and help them out by making access free and open and by cooperating for the common good of our children.
