Do Only Conservative Victories Count?

In 2008, the largest number of voters in American history gave the Democrats their largest share of the presidential vote in 44 years and big majorities in the House and Senate.

How did Republicans react? They held their ideological ground, refused to give an inch to the new president, and insisted that persistent opposition would eventually yield them victory. And on Nov. 2, it did.

Yet now that Democrats have suffered a setback—in an election, it should be said, involving many fewer voters than the big battle two years ago—they are being counseled to do the opposite of what the Republicans did, especially by Republicans.

Democrats who stand up to say they were right to reform health care and stimulate a staggering economy are told they “don’t get it” and are “in denial.” Liberals who refuse to let one election loss alter their commitments are dismissed as “doubling down” on a bad bet.

President Obama made the word “audacity” popular, but conservative Republicans practice it.

Mainstream commentary typically bends to the more audacious side. As a result, there was far less middle-of-the-road advice in 2008 urging Republicans to move to the center than there were warnings to Obama not to read too much into his victory. The U.S., we were told, was still a “center-right” country. The actual election result didn’t seem to matter back then.

Funny, isn’t it? When progressives win, they are told to moderate their hopes. When conservatives win, progressives are told to retreat.

Worse, Democrats tend to internalize the views of their opponents. Already, some moderate Democrats are claiming that all would have been well if Obama had not tried to reform health care or “overreached” in other ways. Never mind that Obama’s biggest single mistake (beyond the administration’s projection that unemployment would peak at around 8 percent) was giving in to Senate moderates and not demanding the much bigger stimulus plan a weak economy plainly needed.

In fact, moderate Democrats would do better calling attention to how extreme and out of touch the conservative program actually is. Moderates should be more offended than anyone that the GOP’s ideological obsessions (health care repeal, tax cuts for the wealthy, deregulation) have little connection to solving the country’s problems, particularly the economic difficulties in the electorally pivotal Midwest.

The best news for Democrats is that the Republicans’ fixation on repealing the health care law will give its supporters a 10th inning—an unexpected second chance to win the struggle for public opinion.

The most politically potent attack on the health care effort was not on the plan itself. It was the argument that Democrats should have spent less time on this bill and more on job creation. Every moment the Republicans devote to destroying this year’s reform opens them up to exactly the same criticism.

Moreover, reopening the health care debate will allow the law’s supporters to defend its particulars. What, exactly, do the Republicans want to repeal? Tax breaks helping businesses cover their employees? Individual tax credits? (Yes, repealing the health bill would be a big tax increase.) Protections for people with pre-existing conditions, or for adult children under age 26?

And Republicans are showing who and what they really care about by their other big priority: making sure the Bush tax cuts are extended for the wealthy in the coming lame-duck congressional session that Democrats will still control.

Even in this year’s very conservative electorate, only 18 percent said cutting taxes should be the next Congress’ highest priority. Only 40 percent said the Bush tax cuts should be extended for all, including the wealthy; 51 percent were opposed to this, including 36 percent who favored extending them only to those earning under $250,000 a year (Obama’s position), and an additional 15 percent who opposed extending them at all.

Yes, the moderate, middle-of-the-road position is the one held by the president. Why sell it out? Raising the $250,000 ceiling a bit might be called a compromise. Any wholesale extension would be a shameful and abject capitulation that would just prove how easy it is to bully Democrats.

Give Republicans credit for this: They don’t chase the center, they try to move it. Democrats can play a loser’s game of scrambling after a center being pushed ever rightward. Or they can stand their ground and show how far their opponents are from moderate, problem-solving governance. Why should Democrats take Republican advice that Republicans themselves would never be foolish enough to follow?

The SUREST way for Democrats to LOSE EVERYTHING in 2012 will be to continue their preemptive cave-in to the Republicans.  It is time for the President to STAND UP AND FIGHT for the American people.

Response: Blah, Blah, Blah! Such eloquence for presumed remedial solutions without recourse, oriented towards undoubtedly like-minded diminutive predilections.

But hey, what the heck, as I’ve said before, what could anyone expect from such diminution of intelligentsia? One might have thought, if one where actually a thinking sort, one might have attempted to prove otherwise!

I won’t presume to entertain why individuals deem it necessary to communicate with such flowering expose of their brilliance. But, not being one who accepts to condemn another for their efforts, we rather exhort them in our patience, to consider seeking further perfection for perfecting their condition. Than to shine were a miner of wisdom would have difficulty seeing otherwise!

In support of my continuing challenge throughout voluminous postings herein, one only has to avail themselves of facts we present, if they have any honorable bone in them, to accept the challenge, by reading the “4” declarations posted by the SEA at the web link: http://www.scribd.com/rahyah.

We honorably await any evidence to prove the premises presented in-particular to the established facts raised within the Universal Declaration dealing with the Four Freedoms on pages 13-15 to prove otherwise.

Having said all this, I will be constantly vigilant, awaiting evidenced, line for line, contrary to the documentary evidence we have proffered!

And once again, as our humble attempt for those capable of presenting facts line for line, in the light of reasonable propositions or otherwise, just as a reminder for all those who honorably exchange ideas within the ‘Truthdig Forum’ while refraining from hateful or insolent behavior…always remember, sometimes while exchanging ideas, the time and respect we give, from a deep seated desire to foster harmonious behavior to garner enlightenment, can be met on the road of hopeful enlightenment, by those seeking to discourage, rather than exhorting to greater possibilities. Response: I was really impressed with ‘worm’s’ commentary and presentation of verifiable and statistical facts. His referenced resources, could be easily confirmed for any real researcher interested.

Now to the matter at hand:

Simply put, a third party within the U.S. political structure presently in place, emphatically will not change the status quo, of either those with Political Rights and/or Standing, or voters with Civil Rights (not synonymous with Political Rights) without Standing, who may think they can make a difference by voting. The evidence in support of voter value in respect to changing the Rules by which the Guardians play by, appertaining to any of the branches of government or agencies thereof, is as likely to affect or alter the outcome arising from the lack of Standing to State a Claim for which relief cam be Granted, pro or con, in a system of governance you’ve been duped into believing you’re a party too!!!

Individuals, singularly or collectively, find it hard to face their duty upon the Watchtower of self-determination in support of self-evident principles, ‘that all men are by nature are equally free and independent, and have certain unalienable rights, of which, when they enter into a State of Society, they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; namely, the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety,’ but the responsibility of our present and future generations doesn’t change just because the truth is hard to face!

Another dishonest article trying to create a false reality that the democratic party is looking out for the general public’s benefit.

The sad reality is that most so called democrats keep buying it again and again. It is the Charlie Brown Syndrome, where Charlie is told again and again by Lucy (the democratic party leadership) that they won’t take the ball away at the last minute, and sure enough, the public falls for it.

There was no health care reform that is worth saving; there was no real attempt at having a real economic recovery package (just a corporate bailout), and until people start voting for third parties things will continue to have a war based economy that further degrades the economy, society, and the environment.

Why most Americans (not just “Liberals”) voted against Obama.

ON THREE BIG ISSUES, NOT LISTENED TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE:

1 The American people wanted a government administered plan like Medicare -
for everyone. (72% - CBS/New York Times poll June 2009)

1A. Democrats gave private sector insurers a windfall: mandated customers,
with a taxpayer-paid overhead rate of 20% for ‘mandated customers’ (20% of
our premium spent on administration, CEO salaries, bonuses, Boards to set
rates and decide who’s covered and ‘profits’).
2 64% of the American people opposed expanding the war in Afghanistan and
wanted to disentangle from Bush-era ‘War on Terror’ and ‘preventive war’
policies.
2B. Democrats gave us an expansion of the war in Afghanistan.

3 The vast majority of Americans opposed the transfer of taxpayer wealth to
cover private company debt – the bailout.
3B. Democrats kept the 6 too-big-to-fail banks – now bigger than ever; kept
deposits at risk by maintaining huge grey areas between commercial and
investment banking; didn’t ‘punish’ the financial industry - now even more
profitable, with bonuses among the biggest ever.
None are so blind as those who will not see, nor deaf as those who will not
hear.

ON DEALING FRANKLY AND TRUTHFULLY WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE:

The day after the election, the White House’s Director of Management and
Budget, Peter Orszag, in a NYTimes OpEd tells the voters this whopper:

“There are four ways to contain health care costs:
by reducing payments to providers and suppliers;
by rationing services;
by having consumers pay a greater share; and
by giving providers incentives to be more efficient.”
This is plainly and simply not true.
A savings of 15% or more can be achieved through a government-administered
plan like Medicare - for everyone. (And by the way, a CBS/New York Times poll
June 2009 showed that 72% of Americans favored this approach.)
The quickest, easiest and sane way to save is move to a single payer system.
Advocates for such a system were blocked from speaking last year by Obama’s
shill, Senator Max Baucus; but the facts are the facts.

ON CHANGE:

Kept Bush advisors in the two key areas where people wanted change - the
Economy and the “War on Terror” - Geithner, Paulson, Summers & Gates,
Patreaus.

ON MAINTAINING REPUBLICAN POLICIES, WHILE BLATHERING ABOUT ‘CHANGE’:

1. Gutted real financial reform (no Glass-Steagle, no ‘too big too fail)
2. Rejected the only health care option that would simultaneously extend
coverage and cut costs (single payer)
3. Supported a stingy stimulus (one-third tax breaks)
4. Doubled-down & accelerated the Bush bailouts
5. Escalated a fruitless war in Afghanistan
6. Not helped people in bankruptcy & needing mortgage remediation
7. Not passed a jobs bill & had trouble extending unemployment compensation
8. Ignored previous Republican profligacy, crimes, misdemeanors
9. Used “Heck of a Job, Timmy” to promote low taxes for the wealthy on capital
gains, dividends and ‘carried interest’
10. Sandbagged his “Budget Commission” with Max Baucus clones to accelerate
the transfer of wealth from the middle class to the wealthy.

Iit doesnt explain why people voted for Republicans, but it does explain why
people didnt vote for Obama.

When the Democrats win, it’s never about how the Liberals carried the
Democrats to victory. When the Democrats lose, it’s always about how the
Liberals caused the Democrats to lose.

Well, as for this Democrat, unless we find someone other than Obama for 2012,
you can count me out. Im bailing for a third party. There is simply no sense in
supporting a second Republican Party - one is too much.

I used to think this dude Obama was smart, but the Republicans and their Teabagger front group have faked him out time and time again. They scare him away from removing tax breaks for the top 2%, then they blame him for not reducing the deficit. Their Blue Dog pals blackmail him into removing the public option, then he’s left there forcing the working class into the clutches of the insurance industry’s corporate swindlers with no strategy to lower premiums. The right wing has successfully watered down every single thing he’s done. From a stimulus too puny to do much of anything to financial reform that looks like a block of Swiss cheese. He’s taken shots at every turn, and still he sticks his chin out. Maybe he’ll fold on Social Security, too, when Reagan and Bush’s welfare for the rich program and endless wars have been financed by stealing our retirement funds. This guy’s from Chicago? Hard to believe. Oh, I agree he “doesn’t get it”, but what he doesn’t get is that he can’t win in 2012 by sliding even further to the right. Give me a break.

Response: We’ll not entertain response to medicated status..ha, ha! But making sense or rather not making sense is in the minds eye of the beholder!

Often people who entertain exchanging ideas, must do so on a very open-ended subjective framework, unless otherswise noted.

Another lie:

Obama’s position actually will give a bigger tax cut to those over $250,000 than to anyone else.  Or should I say what used to be Obama’s position before he indicated his real position was the same as the Republicans.

The stimulus Obama asked for was already far too small.  He didn’t compromise.  It was he who made it so small / so Republican because Obama is a Republican.

Response: Blah, blah, blah…..about as much to do about nothing as most the commentary posted by columnists or posters herein, applicable to the various subject matter raised within this forum.

Meaning, nothing presented herein, with few exceptions, has anything to do with the truth of your reality and/or your ability to effect such reality. Of course, unless your willing to use the Science of Right Reason and come to the table to bargain for your unalienable rights to which the Law’s of Nature and Nature’s Creator entitle you. And, reasonably use these entitlements to state a Claim for which relief can be granted before being confronted by Arbitrary Powers or their unregulated Monopolies, there is no hope for you, ever effecting the outcome of any reality. For yourself or your children’s children. Due to the fact, that you’ve chosen to be duped and via your inactivity and/or silence, you’ve chosen subjugation for generations to come! He who sleeps on his/her Rights, HAS NO RIGHTS!!!

I’ve entered this forum for the purpose of both exchanging ideas and for mutual growth, both in presenting our individual variances thereto, or abilities to express better ways to exchange ideas, oriented toward solutions of Good Will in the interest of seeking Universal Peace with All Walks of Life.

Not one viable answer or solution has been proffered with any evidence to prove me my premises wrong.

As we have said before, which has been proven over and over to date by the posters herein, beyond any reasonable doubt otherwise, it would seem that individuals seeking solution oriented paradigms or who wish to proffer solutions (per: http://www.scribd.com/rahyah) must be subjected to degradation of character and continuing insolence.

Even though at all times, we have only pleaded reasonable behavior within an alleged forum designed for airing hopefully civilized exchange of ideas.

Me thinks politics is like basketball, all one really needs to watch is the last few minutes of the game to see if your favorite team lost.

One may say the Democrats are center of the Republican right and the center is right of where it was several years ago.

Actually the Democrats seemed to drop the ball on purpose, maybe to let the Republicans fuck up the country further?  Politics appear to be all fake, a constant play of the good cop bad cop routine,  it changes every so often with the same results in the end.

Neither party seems to represent the real live people anymore than a basketball team does. The Supreme court really set the mood when corporations became people too, maybe why the Chamber of Commerce is running with the ball now!

As an individual, I know when I have absolutely no say in the grand scheme of things and neither party really gives a shit what I want or think, though they do tell me what I really want and should think!

Time to polish up my bumper sticker which sums it up very nicely! ..... “Who Gives a Damn about Apathy?”
