Democracy and Domestic ViolencePosted on Mar 31, 2010By Joe Conason When the Department of Homeland Security released a cautiously worded report on the potential dangers of right-wing extremism last April, the talk-radio wingnuts and certain Republican lawmakers went into spasms of indignation. Clearly, that report had been conjured up by White House Democrats to smear conservatives. (Actually, the nine-page document was commissioned by the Republican administration of George W. Bush.) “There is not one instance they can cite as evidence where any of these right-wing groups have done anything,” Rush Limbaugh told his listeners. A year later, we know that Limbaugh was wrong (again). Up in northern Michigan, the Hutaree militants were collecting weapons and ammunition—and allegedly plotting the assassination of law enforcement officers with the same kind of roadside bombs and projectiles used by terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. The difference is that those groups claim to be Muslim; the violent extremists over here prefer to be known as Christian. We also know that the recent outbreak of window smashing against Democrats in the aftermath of the passage of health care reform can be traced to a militia activist from Alabama. He justified urging those attacks on his website as a warning that America is on the brink of mass violence. It is a theme he has promoted for more than a decade, dating back to the militia movement of the Clinton years, when he authored a pamphlet titled “Strategy and Tactics for a Militia Civil War.” Now, nobody is likely to apologize to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, the actual victim of a smear by those who claimed she was trying to intimidate those who call themselves conservative. But while the Hutaree conspiracy charges are very troubling, as was the window-smashing spree, there are still more disturbing signals from the far right. Advertisement “A peaceful demonstration of at least a million—hey, if we can get 10 million, even better—but at least one million armed militia men marching on Washington. A peaceful demonstration. No shooting, no one gets hurt. Just a demonstration. The only difference from any typical demonstration is we will all be armed.” Now Pale Horse’s plan—or something very similar—may actually occur on April 19, the anniversary of the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord and, perhaps not coincidentally, of the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building by Timothy McVeigh. Militia websites are currently promoting a “Restore the Constitution rally” at two locations in northern Virginia where the marchers can legally carry firearms. They plan to “muster” at Fort Hunt National Park, about 12 miles south of the nation’s capital, and then travel in “small convoys” to a park near Reagan National Airport, just over the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. This will let them “step up to the edge” with their weapons, as the organizers put it. Although the militia marchers are acting within their rights, their intentions seem not terribly far from those of the window smashers. Among them there may well be groups and lone nuts whose seditious plans resemble those of the Hutaree. As the militias enact Pale Horse’s fantasy, they appear determined to intimidate every American who disagrees with their interpretation of the Constitution and their rancorous hatred of the president and the Democratic Party. So, perhaps Napolitano can take some satisfaction from the fresh evidence that her critics were wrong and that the report on right-wing extremism was, if anything, too mild. Neither she nor any other official in government should be deterred from exposing the extremists who threaten public security and constitutional democracy, regardless of ideology. It is clear that the ultra right wing do not believe in the Constitution or even democracy. They are sore because our legal system finally stood up and said that all citizens have the right to participate in government and have a right to their opinions on things that concern them.
Nothing could be worse for the country as a whole and for our culture than to allow armed gangs to spread terror and violence across our society. That is a path to what is happening in Iraq and many other places in the world. It is a path that leads to death and destruction and gangsterism.
I am still waiting to see Bush and Cheney to answer for their crimes and criminality in a court of law. I still think it was a mistake not to find the support structure for Eric Rudolph. People who will not tolerate other peoples concerns or opinions have no right to expect consideration for themselves. In our system the law demands we do give consideration, but somewhere we will have to make the decision of do we allow a few malajusted people to disrupt democracy? Their rights to oppose stop at my nose.

To Mr. Wexler:
I can’t write as elogently as you, but I have a few thoughts..
I agree that Faux is the big dog in the misinformation campaign and I keep wondering to what purpose? I wonder if the goal is ratings alone? I believe the goal is to frighten people, but why?
Look to the root. Rubbert Murdoch owns FOX and many other media ALL over the world. Why does he allow newscasters and commentators to misinform and tell out and out lies to the public? For ratings? Could he achieve that goal in another way?
He is native Australian. He was educated in England. He resides in China and has a Chinese wife and two small children. Where do his loyalties lie? Does he care that the lies perpetuated by Glenn Beck, Bill O’Riley and others are dividing this country, and fueling hatred that may very well tear the country apart?
He is a Corporatite living in China. What are his goals? Can his goals be good for Americans and the United States?
These are some questions I have about the man who owns FAUX?
To another writer:
Report thisIt is far more likely that Republicans would throw bricks through Republican windows and blame it on Democrats than the other way around. They probably have a plan prepared so that when Democrats are attacked they can turn the tables and make it the Democrats fault. Lies are truth, up is down, war is peace, a Republican brick is a Democratic brick, etc. That"s the world of FAUX and their Republican followers.

While I pay 65% of my income in TAXES so they can blow it on stupid pork, I get perturbed. When congress steals from my hand what I EARNED to GIVE to someone who earned nothing I get mad as hell. I am all for charity, but it is my money and I will choose how much I give and to whom I give. If some one wants their bills paid—GO TO WORK!!!! I have never been called so many names in all my life. Just because I disagree with a half-black mans policies I’m a racist—I wouldn’t care if he was a rainbow colored cockatiel. It is time for Congress to be held accountable for it’s actions—note I said CONGRESS- not dems or repubs. I’m not a Bush fan any more than I like O’bama, They both were a disgrace to the the people. I have no desire to have the government take care of me—I have seen what that looks like. NO THANKS. I will help vote them out.

A lot of us concerned about right wing craziness went through it years ago during the McCarthy era and saw first hand the damage it did to civil order and common sense. So we don’t want to go through it again.
Report thisInnocent people lost their jobs, homes, reputation, sanity because of untrue, misconstrued, mischievious allegations. Many people were terrified of the FBI/CIA and afraid to make any political statement. People were “tailed” for attending meetings of “suspected” organizations and meetings were “surveilled” or disrupted by “plants”.
Self-appointed stooges terrorized public school officials with accusations of subversion that resulted in entire districts voting against raising a school bond, for instance, so a much-needed school could be built or repaired. People who refused to sign, or questioned signing, “loyalty oaths” were fired from teaching jobs or refused employment.
The atmosphere was poisoned with deliberately encouraged suspicion and fear. It was very destructive of the ordinary civility necessary to keep a society functioning. In the Soutn, it was much worse than that during the struggle for civil rights, of course. People learned then that it is true that “a false patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels,” because all the unproved allegatioins are always cloaked in the guise of upholding patriotism.
Instilling fear and encouraging partisanship are very damaging to democracy.

I am truly sorry to say that the prediction of mass domestic violence is very likely valid. Often, I believe we are being baited into just such response by a degenerate society that claims legitimacy under the Constitution. I am not now, nor have ever been, a right (or left) radical, and Palin gives me a headache. Nonetheless, the blatancy of the bailout of the financial elite at the expense of everyone else in the country, the endless wars (and war mongering), the almost certain and imminent collapse of the economy, the impending tyranny of the IMF insisting WE accept austerity programs, et al, convince me that we are hurtling to a four-fold reckoning in this country and around the world. If we resist econonmic fascism, we are considered extremists. If we insist that medical care is a civil right and allowing people to die because someone won’t profit from their illness is wrong, we are socialists. If we demand justice for ourselves and our neighbor by rejecting rampant pedophilia, we are “Catholic haters” (I am Catholic). In other words, if we demand that our society follow the basic principles of honor, integrity, justice and compassion, we are indeed a threat to society.
What should we expect, except violence?

Profiling the actions of a few and assigning it to a large national group is uninformed stupidity.
Look at immediate accusations when events occur, like spitting on congressmen and yelling the “n” word or damaging political headquarters. Without a shred of proof, the finger-pointing began.
Damage to empty political offices a day after the health care bill passed were immediately reported. Bricks or other objects were thrown through campaign windows at night. The buildings were unoccupied. No one saw anything.
Do you recall that Democrats used the media to blame Tea Parties, and included the Republicans for not denouncing the incidents?
It is time to grow up and let a little reason leak into mental processes. When emotion comes into the room, reason walks out.
Who else could have done such a deed? Democrats could have orchestrated such an easy incident in order to smear organizations they perceive as a threat.
In Denver, a couple of years ago, a Democrat did throw a brick through the Democratic headquarters. He wanted people to think republicans did it.
Odds are that this current vandalism to offices will be a large talking point when members of congress are home. They will wring their hands and say can’t we be civil and kind to each other. Then, if a relatively few act out, the entire organization will be branded as all of the same kind.
It is easier to brand Tea Party members as scalawags, racists and ne’er-do-well gun-toting fascists who are threatening and intimidating Democrats.
Even Sarah Palin has apparently joined the Tea Party groups meeting around the country. We remember how she was treated as a candidate.
Lately, she advised “reload,” and the lefties jumped on it as a gun reference, accompanied by sniper targets in the map of the U.S. So she is branded as condoning guns and violence.
Guess I will have to reload my camera to catch proof. I surely can’t say I want to “target” those in office. Sounds like gun stuff. How about just voting them out?
Newspapers with heavy liberal leanings go along with misreporting the facts. Leave out a word here and there, and a different meaning is conveyed.
Last Sunday, The (Nashville) Tennessean’s front page reported a congressman’s yelled “baby killer.” The report should have correctly reported he yelled, “It’s a baby killer.” The congressman was against the bill, not the flip-flopper who changed his vote.
What names are Tea Party members called? A social worker, Jill Garner from Carthage MO, said, “We’re called morons, racists, lunatics and a mob.”
Truth is Democrats fear the Tea Parties, with good reason.
Instead of working to get along, we need to work to keep the U.S. Constitution intact and followed. If we don’t get along, but do succeed in returning the country to the voters, and not the government incumbents, good for us.
If we don’t succeed, we’ll be broke when the taxes start going up on health care and cap-and-trade.
“Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Sound familiar? It is an excellent rule to follow when debating. Harsh words in public do not necessarily signify terror, violence or racism.
If people want to be labeled as “uninformed and scared,” then they should continue to place blame where it doesn’t belong. Such foolishness will only make Tea Parties stronger.
“Just the facts, ma’am,” applies here. Did a majority or large number of Tea Party members spit on people or shout the “n” word 15 times? What are the facts? No one has identified any proof.
In closing, remember this. What did one tea bag say to the other? “We have miles to go before we steep.”

Given time, we will no doubt find that the recently raided militias were actually sponsored and aided by the FBI. CoIntelPro is alive and well. DHS already considers that those who cite the Constitution as being possible terrorists. DHS considers returning troops from Iraq and Afghanistan to be possible terrorists. And national media is working to help create the meme that anyone who speaks about the Constitution, or the founding fathers is suspect. Ask yourself what does ‘keeping us safe’ mean? No jobs? No health care? This keeps us safe? Being foreclosed—-this keeps us safe? It’s all a sham, and we have to realize that the FBI and DHS are out to punish anyone who would say that the emperor has no clothes.

Our founders left us with the tools we need to counteract the threat of domestic terrorists like Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, Palin, and the like. And I do consider them to be just that, terrorists. They are using their mass media coverage and access to spread misinformation and anti-government rhetoric. This is designed to keep people in fear because that way they’ll keep tuning in.
Unfortunately, the real implementation of the tools our founders left us differs in ways that they would consider to be totally unpatriotic and dangerous. The perversion of our media has skewed the public debate into a fantasyland of bizzaro-world factoids that have little bearing on reality.
Somewhere along the way it became a fact of American life that we can get nothing but bullshit from any of our “mainstream” news outlets. In this world, money = truth, as things become true by endless repetition in the media echo chamber. I just heard someone this evening on Rachel Maddow talking about how a single organization set up 40 different sub-organizations who echo and amplify the message they want heard.
During to the runup to the Iraq invasion, the phrase “information given by a White House source on the condition of anonymity” actually meant “Duck, here comes a line of cosmic bullshit the likes of which you’ve never heard before.” Time after time the media went after these selective misinformation leaks and went with them like they were a scoop. The effect of this on America was to soften us up so it would make palatable the pre-emptive, illegal invasion of a sovereign nation that we had illegally harassed by air attacks and sanctions.
My favorite artifact from the misinformation campaign orchestrated by Cheney/Rove came in the form of a CBS News poll conducted in mid 2006 in which 64% said they believed that Saddam Hussein had strong ties to al Qaeda. WTF? Where did that come from? Obviously a lie, and Dubya claims he never said it nor did anyone in his administration. Bullshit.
So with our press compromised by money, the rich can create whatever reality it wants to create, as Cheney’s aide suggested.
Right now the Big Dog is Faux News, and I truly believe that people on that network are committing acts which cross the line protecting free speech and move into the troubling area of rabble-rousing. Someday down the line enough citizens will unplug Faux that it will go down once and for all.
Will something worse take its place?

For the Republicans and the radical right, Limbaugh especially, an honest evaluation of anything is not possible. It is agenda first. Even arguing about Limbaugh pronouncements or the truth and/or impact is pointless. We don’t have the same criteria of a Limbaugh or of most Republicans. Limbaugh and Republicans are total narcissists. The self first, then everything else should be their motto.
Thus it is fruitless to expect any other criteria out of them.

Question:
Do fear and hysteria have anything to do with it? If so, who or what promotes hysteria?
Question: Is it related to other violence in the society, such as war, the idea of “holy” wars, historical/religious “heroes”? And is it related to “male superiority” and feelings of adequacy?
Question: Where are the psychological and statistical studies in depth on these subject?
Until we have some solid information about these outbursts, how can they be prevented?
Anyone: Please refer me to books, articles, serious investigations etc. Thanks.

So,pashtuns and iraqis who kill occupiers are “terrorists” and occupiers are non-terrorists.
So, all occupiers need to do is to kill or capture all terrorists and then go home?
Russians have just announced their intention to wipe off the map all “terrorists”; also using non-terrorists or pro bono people to acomplish it.
And also they go home after they kill all terrorists?
Or, the non-terrorists wld continue fighting terrorists for another few millennia?
I thought that after ca 10k yrs of this we wld at least say: how long, oh our dear devil, will this go on?
Ok, folks, mollifying Satan or pleading with her may not be bad idea. In any case, what can we lose by doing that; i.e., trying to melt devil’s heart?
