After 41 Years, a Belated Victory for ButterPosted on Jun 25, 2010By David Sirota The last time America found itself in a budget debate pitting domestic priorities against war expenditures, Richard Nixon was in the White House and David Obey was the youngest member of Congress—an anti-war liberal whose insurgent campaign unexpectedly vaulted him into the House seat vacated by the hawkish president’s new defense secretary. In those dark days of the late 1960s and early 1970s, as Obey was still learning his way around Washington, it was the guns of Vietnam and the Cold War versus the butter of the Great Society and the War on Poverty—and despite Obey’s protests, guns won the day. “President Nixon issued a call to counterrevolution at home,” summed up Time magazine in 1973, noting that while the Republican administration was increasing the Pentagon budget, it was proposing the “abolition or deep cutting of more than 100 federal grant programs that have benefited the unemployed, students, farmers, veterans, small businessmen, the mentally ill and tenants in federally aided housing.” The resulting body bags and cuts to homeland investment were, of course, devastating—which is why it is fitting that Obey is choosing to end his congressional tenure where he started it: presciently on the side of butter in a 21st-century reprisal of the ancient debate. And this time, the Wisconsin Democrat’s seniority puts him in a far more powerful position to press his case. Over the last decade, Obey has been methodically campaigning against the Iraq war and the endless Afghanistan occupation, saying their rationales are weak, their prosecution inept and their deficit-financed costs unaffordable in the face of unmet domestic needs. For years, he has valiantly championed bills to legislate withdrawal timetables and war surtaxes. Now, with President Obama defiantly pushing a plan to boost Afghan war funding at the potential expense of economic aid on the home front, Obey has deftly replaced the scalpel strokes of proactive legislation with the blunt force of filibuster. According to Politico, Obey last week “drew a direct link between war funding and progress on domestic priorities” with his announcement that as Appropriations Committee chairman, he will “withhold action on the war funds until there (is) some resolution on a major economic relief bill extending jobless benefits.” Advertisement “Gates to Congress: Stalling on War Funding Will Hurt U.S. Troops,” read the Fox News headline after he publicly echoed the GOP demands. The Nation’s Chris Hayes has written that such tripe boils down to “You’re either with the war or you are against the troops”—and as the bloated Pentagon budget proves, that message has thwarted Obey for most of his life. Until, perhaps, now. Yes, just as Obey prepares to retire, there are signs that his crusade is winning converts. For instance, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn is using his position on President Obama’s deficit commission to focus attention on Pentagon profligacy. Similarly, Politico reports that “key tea party players (are) expressing a willingness to put the Pentagon budget on the chopping block.” And rank-and-file congressional Democrats, once cowed by war proponents’ saber rattling, are increasingly echoing Obey’s rhetoric. Whether or not the cacophony stops the Pentagon’s latest blank check is less important than Obey having finally rekindled an honest discussion about guns and butter. In a storied 41-year career of venerable accomplishments, that is the most profound achievement of all. Once again our endless Wars take priority over the
well being of the working people of this nation.
According to John Wayne McCain, and, most of other
idiots in our Congress, we can well afford to spend
Trillions on War and enforcing our failed Policy
towards many other nations in the world, but then
cannot afford to spend a few Billion to extend
unemployment insurance or any other program that
would help the Middle Class, working poor, or, those
at the bottom of the ladder trying to hold on while
they wait in quiet desperation for someone like Allen
Greyson to even attempt to just slow down spending on
a Bloated Military Budget.
After all I guess when people like McCain of Arizona,
Report thisBoner of Ohio, and other GOP spokesmen in the
Congress say that if We do not fight them there We
will have to fight them here in the USA, We must take
that as Gospel. What a crock, during the Second
World War, (to end all wars) it took a thousand
ships, thousands of boats, A Million men, complete
control of the Air Space above, cargo planes towing
gliders, just to travel the 26 miles across the
English Channel to invade France. Now just what
Country in this world has the military might, or men,
and equipment to travel thousands of miles to attack
this country.

So there is this family that lives in a really rough neighborhood and because the family is always sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong and the Father is a real bully someone finally struck back. Now instead of that headofhousehold stopping, asking themselves some relevant questions about his behavior and the cause of this smackdown, he freaks out and attacks and murders a whole mess of innocent people who had nothing to do with the attack on him. At the same time, his house is falling down around his ears. He has Formosan termites, the plumbing is shot, there is no heat, the toilet won’t flush, and the windows are broken out. His multiple wives are pregnant again and he has too may mouths to feed, they need medical care, the schools have been closed, the roads are full of potholes and the car is barely running. So he goes out and robs a bunch of local citizens because he really needs to get some food in the house. But as soon as he gets the money, what does he do, he escalates the attacks on his neighbors, spends all the money on more shiny guns, ammo, and barbed wire!
Now if we knew a man like this on our neighborhood we would surely try to do something about him. The problem is that we have a whole passel of them in Washington, we know their names and we keep sending them back for more of the same. Well, I don’t. I voted my conscience and voted for Ralph Nader again. I don’t believe in Hoping for Change, I want to see the real deal. President Abysmal wasn’t it. Sure, my guy lost. But I’m not sitting here feeling foolish and betrayed!

The military in our streets, is only half of the story.
Report thisWe will be one of those third world banana republics that suppresses and destroys the very ideals we are supposed to be championing, that of FREEDOM! of the press, the right to associate with whom we will, the freedom to dissent from the current juntas policies.
That’s right people, be prepared for the internet to be shut down because of ‘national security reasons,’ and weirdly enough, China’s so-called freedoms will look good to Americans.
We the people of America, are on the cusp of a brand new and improved form of totalitarianism that makes China look good to us. We will be the recipient of many of the same measures to quell dissent from the current administrations horrific policies.
The Bill of Rights will be meaningless in the new Amerikka. Sheeple of the world unite, you will have nothing to lose but your chains.
Sorry folks, but this is now and has been for the past 12 years a proto-fascist regime in the making.
And worst of all we cannot stop the ball of progress from rolling towards the greatest fall to an oligarchic/plutocratic fascist state ever.

When one looks at America’s problems, all of them, they represent a disintegration and a failure of the countries infrastructure.
The Recession, bankruptcy of State governments, unemployment, endless wars, failing bank system, failing Educational System, illegal immigration, addiction, poor healthcare, pollution, etc., etc., all of them.
But they are not separate problems, they are a result of a single problem, and can be easily traced back to the root underlying illness.
The politicians especially the Democrats offer remedy’s for each one of our “issues”, all of these remedies will essentially fail. Because the root cause is never dealt with.
In fact, our problems will continue to worsen, as long as the root issue is never dealt with, and as long as that’s the case, we will continue on the present downward spiral, to an inevitable outcome, just as sure as night follows day.
That underlying problem is the American corporation, its structure, its control of government and law. And the absolute lack of redress by the American people through their political process, due to corporate control.
Since those corporations, are incompetent, greedy, foolish and unable to compete with the business throughout the world except via graft, they will fail. Just as the recent recession, was caused by their stupidity and greed, the next economic catastrophe will be as well.
What will be left of this country, will be anyone’s guess. But we will be bankrupt, and near dissolution as any sort of political entity.
So it really doesn’t matter what Washington does, all of the remedies it tries will be impotent, unless it does one thing. Only one thing and one thing alone will prevent the coming catastrophe. Otherwise all the speeches and bills, and editorials, are just the wind blowing the wrong way.
Does anyone really think Washington has it in them?

Obey and Kucinich were marginalized by the media and the politicians. Any politician that has the temerity to question the status-quo and legislate for the American people is ridiculed by their peers and the press. And as to the statement “shaving the military budget for gov handouts” and “creating jobs” that’s another fantasy. The Gov doesn’t “create” jobs, the private sector does. The years of growth for our Country was due to the robust manufacturing and service sectors. Well, our manufacturing base as well as our service sectors have been shipped to China/India and unless we stop this mad dash to third world status with a decrepid infrastructure and destitute population ruled by Military Juntas. I agree we will see the military in our streets to suppress dissent.
We are well past the financial tipping point as we borrow from China,Dubai,Saudis, etc. to fund our MIC. We are sending billions to Afganistan/Iraq to buy loyalty. We are building schools and roads in foreign countries while we close schools and let our roads, bridges and water systems fall apart here at home. We are allowing Corporations to run rampant in our banks and environment.
Unless the President,Senate and Congress grow a pair and shut down these debilitaing wars, spend trillions of dollars to re-tool our manufacturing base to 21st Century energy production and National Grid, we will be forced into chaos and austerity as the ranks of poor swell precipitiously. Expecting the Gov to “create jobs” out of thin air is political hype masquerading as possibility.
And you, rollzone, will probably be the first in line for your “handout” when your income disappears and you are facing homelessness as a direct result of our costly military adventures.

Everything money touches turns to shit, or worse. Those whose god is this toxic, corrosive, and habit-forming virtual substance, and their minions into whose hearts abject fear is struck at the mere thought of not having enough of it (Like any drug-of-choice, there can never be “enough.”), are all doomed to enjoying neither “guns” nor “butter.” They won’t have to do so for long, though.
Oh, and is there any need to mention money makes everybody stark raving crazy who feels at the mercy of the stuff and those who “manage” it? Witness the congress. Witness TV. Witness the contents of this article. Witness the neighborhood near you.

A discussion mind you. Of all the evil in the world, we are the worst. While blatantly killing and maiming fellow humans all over the world, this Government could go on maybe indefinitely. Yet, we choose to discuss. Pass the canolis, please.
The real war is coming. The nasty one. The one that pits local militia and local police against fellow American protesters who are acting out against the 20-year austerity measures that are coming. That’s according to the IMF.
The IMF has been told by South America to fuck themselves. IMF lends money to counties if they will impose austerity measures that few American can comprehend.
Pay more for your water. Pay more for your child’s education. And to come, pay through the nose for electricity and energy.
I’s like the Army. Many will tell you, “Don’t go into the Army as an enlistee.” If you don’t have rank, you’re shit. Fodder.
In the coming months and years, every Joe and Mary Schmoe will be asked to do without or do with less so that the ones in charge can pay off the 600 Trillion dollar gambling debt of the insatiably flatulent.
That is, all they’ve given us so far is hot air, and now it is beginning to stink.
They want us to smell their farts, and smile.
Back to Obey,
“In a storied 41-year career of venerable accomplishments, that is the most profound achievement of all.”
To hell with the hero worship. He has had a pretty good life. Better than most people I know. So what does he do when he’s faced with an insurmountable force of greed? He quits.
If I had a way out, I’d take it too.

Aside from the obviously extraordinary profits garnered by the military-industrial complex and the “services” provided for the multinational corporations, the real value of the continuous wars of terror is the economic shocks dealt to the poor and middle class in this country. The “War on Terror” is just the international side of domestic class war. Obama, the Republicans and all but a few progressive Democrats need the war/Homeland Security spending (and accompanying deficit hysteria) as an effective means to implement an economic shock doctrine in the U.S. The above don’t really want an economic recovery for ordinary Americans but instead a good way to keep the lower classes in their place.

Wishful thinking.
The military industrial complex has done nothing but get LARGER and STRONGER since the time that Ike outted them.
Take Lockheed Martin, for example. In 1995, Lockheed Corp – the 2nd largest defense contractor - merged with Martin Marietta – the 3rd largest defense contractor – to form Lockheed Martin Co. (“LMCO”).
Today LMCO derives 84% of all its revenue (total revenue: $45. 2 BILLION) from sales to the U.S. government.
LMCO stock has DOUBLED since 9-11.
Per Wikipedia: “In 2001, Lockheed Martin settled a nine year investigation conducted by NASA’s Office of Inspector General with the assistance of the Defense Contract Audit Agency. The company paid the United States government $7.1 million based on allegations that its predecessor, Lockheed Engineering Science Corporation, submitted false lease costs claims to NASA.”
Last year the Obama administration acted to end the F-22 fighter program, a joint project between LMCO and Boeing, which cost the government $65 BILLION for a plane that never flew a single day in combat.
Not to worry: The gov replaced it with the F-35, a LMCO/Northrup Grumman joint project, of which, according to Wikipedia:” The United States intends to buy a total of 2,443 aircraft for an estimated US$323 billion, making it THE MOST EXPENSIVE defense program EVER.” (Emphasis added.)
You get the picture.
Lobbyists for the military industrial complex are buying drinks and blow jobs for members of Congress faster than David Obey can draft legislation.
When budget cuts come, it will be at the expense of social programs. Austerity will be imposed on the little people. It will be business as usual for everyone else. See above.
