In Europe, the Left Has Run Out of Gas

By William Pfaff

PARIS—While the Republican leadership in the United States would have people believe that the country is being remorselessly driven to the far left under Barack Obama, European voters are moving toward the right, so far as the recent electoral evidence indicates. Even in Portugal, the Socialists—elected by a landslide four years ago—lost their parliamentary majority in Sunday’s vote, and will be looking for legislative allies.

In Germany, Angela Merkel’s success has dispensed with the need for her Christian Democratic alliance to prolong its coalition with the Social Democrats. Now alliance with the market-friendly Free Democratic Party will assure her the chancellorship and a more conservative government than was possible within the SDP partnership.

The SDP can go back to being Socialist, although its total vote was the lowest since the Second World War. Its members might try becoming more radically socialist, since the far-left group Die Linke, founded three years ago by former SDP leader Oskar Lafontaine, brought together the disillusioned of the SDP and those others disillusioned (or perhaps not so disillusioned), the former East German Communists. Die Linke did very nicely in the election, with 11.9 percent of the total vote (against the SDP’s 23 percent in exit polling).

But do the German people really want to move to the right, even though they want to keep Merkel as chancellor—whom they see as a solid value? She campaigned on a platform that said a center-right coalition was necessary to undo the damage caused by the global credit crash.

The Free Democrats’ leader, Guido Westerwelle, seeks more than twice the tax cut that Merkel promised in her campaign. Even her proposal would mean severe reduction in social spending.

Moreover, her re-election certainly does not mean any increase in German government support for American wars, as dearly sought by Washington.

On that subject, whichever way Barack Obama chooses between the conflicting advice he is supposedly hearing from his advisers—downplay Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s expanded war plan for Afghanistan, or up-play Vice President Joe Biden’s proposals for “nation-building” and other measures of meddling in Pakistani affairs—the Germans will have as little to do with it as possible. This is as the German electorate wishes.

Generally, in the major European countries, people do not seem to be looking for major change, even if they are unenthusiastic about the governments they have. Probably more to the point, the left has run out of gas. Germany has its enthusiastic new far-left party, Die Linke, and the staggering Labour Party in Britain is dreaming at its annual conference of a miracle to block the rejuvenated Conservatives from replacing them. (A possible candidate-miracle may have been provided by the Conservative leadership’s decision to abandon the center-right grouping in the European Parliament, and join an isolated and powerless far-right bloc: The new Tory voters are on the right, but not that far on the right.)

The French Socialist Party is almost surely beyond salvation. Its long-established leaders hate one another, and together hate Segolene Royal even more for having revealed how empty the party is of serious ideas and people. Its electorate is being eaten away by the youthful parties of “the Left of the Left” on one side and by the centrists and Greens on the other. The only energetic politicians in the country are Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy and some on the far left and in the Greens.

How distant all this must appear from Washington, where seemingly titanic battles are being fought in Congress and on television and radio over war and peace, global terror and global order, saving the global economy and saving the global environment!

But from backstage it is evident that this is sham, too: Congress won’t save the world environment if it takes any money from American shareholders and commodity speculators; the American capitalist model is now a world disgrace; the American wars are against adolescent gunmen with religious missions and can never be won; and there has been no serious anti-Western terrorism in nearly a decade—except in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. Poor peaceful, complacent Western Europe!

The ‘population’ figure Folktruther cites is as irrelevant to the matter of Humanity’s actual (as distinguished from its “civilized” members’ imagined exalted) place in the Natural order as it is intrinsically relative anyhow….except, of course, that those unsustainable (under the current ‘dominance’ regime) numbers furnish symptomatic evidence of the cosmic disease afflicting our Mother Earth.  Most of these billions of domesticated “individuals” are doomed in-any-case by the very destructive motives and methods driving their increasingly desperate struggle for such ‘basics’ as food and shelter.  Like yeast in the fermentation process, they have about excreted sufficient of their own auto-toxic waste products (alcohol, for the Yeast People)) to effect their own mass extinction.  Moreover, they’re doing it all to designs and purposes not really their own….again just like yeast.

This Old Savage is a Native of Turtle Island, and so makes reference to the Song ‘n’ Dance of LifeHerownself as we know it here.  Other Native Peoples in other parts embody their own localized variations on the Rhythms and Lyrics, but all of us express as harmoniously and ‘in-step’ as we’re able our essential Human Nature in accord with our given place in Her Living Arrangement.

That’s true, too, of our tame Sisters and Brothers.  It’s just that they have been co-opted by an invasive (and wannabe parasitic) agency, and so are not simply handicapped in the performance of their Organic Function, but corrupted to the point of actually aggravating the CONdition they’re supposed to be helping to alleviate….which is exactly what our tormentors intend for them to be doing, in preparation for the big binge they mean to go-out with.

One wonders how Folktruther and other apparent ‘humanists’ here would react to a regimen of medical treatment that put the ‘survival needs’ of some lethally destructive invasive organism ahead of those of a ‘patient’ afflicted by it, and justified the systematic degradation, even unto death, of some sufferer on the basis of the invader’s “right” to “make-a-living,” etc.  Homo domesticus operates largely on the make-believe assumption of its ‘especiality.’  Allamerican ‘exceptionalism’ is but one maybe peculiarly egregious example.  This delusion leads them to indulge in all kinds of plainly idiotic behavior….which by definition can come, if persisted-in, only to a more-or-less disastrous DEAD END.

The fact is “power” simply does not signify in Nature.  Neither do philosophy or economics or patriotism or any of the myriad CONstructs captive peoples come-up with trying vainly to make sense of their CONfinement.

There’s nobody really living here, anyway, except us free wild survivors of the “global” holocaust now approaching its inevitable CONclusion.  The half-lives of the domesticated peoples are even now dwindling to nothing.

Yet, any ‘number’ of actual Human Beings can play The Tiyoshpaye Way.  Ironic, isn’t it?

TAO there are seven billion persons in the world. In order to survive they have to eat, shelter, etc.  They’re not all going to do it on Turtle Island.  How would they do it?

Folktruther appears so caught-up in the ideology and institutionalization of “power” that he doesn’t seem to recognize a plain description of Life as us surviving Turtle Island Natives know Her He instead argues again for the invention and propagation of yet another abstract “system” of make-believe CONceits as an antidote to the sickening surfeit of such things already smothering homo domesticus….more hair-of-the-dog, as this Old Man referred to these things on the Michael-Moore’s-new-movie-review ‘thread’.  The illusionary ‘success’ of “civilization” is due in large measure to virtually all if its Stockholm-syndromed captives IDentifying so completely with their tormentors’ motives and methods (not even to mention the inevitable wannabe “masters-of-the-universe” amongst ‘em).  “Power” as the ‘bottom-line’ in all relations is one of the main features of the “global” shell-game….maybe its most seductive (certainly its most corrupting) false promise.

The (increasingly desperate?) urge among so many of our tame Sisters and Brothers these days to CONstruct some sort of less ruthless and destructive, more humane “new-world-order” is certainly understandable.  That they are limited severely in their references to the suffocating CONfines of their collective captive imaginations, and so only able to cobble together from the pieces of their collapsing virtual-world CONtraption something hopefully NOT altogether “it,” wastes their precious attention….and not coincidentally their very lives.

Our Mother Earth (no mere metaphor, but easily observable ‘biological’ fact) has already Her own Living Arrangement.  She brought us Human Beings into it in response to an actual living need….not on some ‘divine’ whim, as our tormentors masquerading as gods and demigods claim to have done.  We have a place, an actual organic function, within Her embodied form, and a particular form of our own in-keeping with it.  This is so no matter whether we know and want it or not….or, even if knowing, we would wish to evade it, which some fools would.  Be glad your own vital organs aren’t susceptible to such “self”-satisfying temptations.

“Civilization” presents here as disease.  We Humans are components in Her immune system, maybe ‘compromised’ and crippled, much like any Persons’ that is encumbered with AIDS….but doing the best we can anyhow.  The domesticated peoples, though, are especially afflicted, in their artificial “individual”-ity, with those ills they are the principal agents of inflicting on Earth and the rest of us Her Natural Children of all Kinds.

Those struggling against the toils of the monstrous apparatus of ‘dominance’ can’t be faulted for believing its gangsterish rule-of-fear is in-effect the fundamental “law” of ‘the-known-universe.’  That has been, after all, the governing principle of their own half-lives….with, admittedly, some occasional relief in the genuine affections of their ‘private’ affairs.  So their experience of the thing is only AS CONtext.

Us free wild survivors of the holocaust these insane would-be usurpers have wrought upon us all, however, can see the entire operation IN-context….see it for the terminally idiotic aberration it is.  So it is that some of us are using the gadgetry our Sisters and Brothers are tuned-in to, here in these latter days, in hopes of helping them to remember the wholeness of their Humanity, and the mutually beneficial response it affords them to address together their present peril.  We would sure appreciate the help, too.

Now where is there any room for ‘philosophy’ in that?

They don’t accept it, Ardee, because the Gaia concept is incompatible with the Western worldview that has legitimated capitalist Democracy the past few centuries and has concealed, disguised and jusified the homicidal racism of the White Man.

It isn’t possible to conceive people and power from a world historical earthperson perspective without subverting the ideologies formulated from a national and regional perspectiave.  These include our religious, political and scientific ideologies.  They have been hijacked by class power to legitimate the polities of our homelands.

If we conceive our largest homeland consistently as the planet earth, than all the others are contained in it.  But if they are integrated in homeland relations, they lose the Sovergnty traditionally associated with the State. The homeland of an earthperson is sacrasanct. And the Wsst loses that Elitism that has been instilled by world power the last 5 centuries.  Since over 80% of earthpeople live in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and imperialism is out.

The marxist approach is to try to acheive socialism in a few developed countries, notably in the West.  But an alternative approach is to integrate first the races of earthpeople that ruling classes oppress to increase their power. That is, to fight imperalism first to develop the power of the oppressed races.  In which case, the socialism that develops at last will be an earthperson socialism.

As a fervent reader of science fiction I have been aware of the Gaia concept for a very long time . I think it a truth that most do not accept.

We should see ourselves, and our species, as a part of something much bigger and thus responsible to all life on this planet for our actions. If we do not we might find ourselves circling the drain.

TAO, your idea that people are children of the earth, indeed of Mother Earth, may be a fruitful spiritual, ethetic and political start of an ideology that unites earthpeople over historical time in a new form of living arrangement.

In the Western tradition the religious tradition was separated from the scientific tradition, deluding the former and impoverishing the latter.  But they are starting to merge, especially with eco-science.

A scientist has developed what is now known as the Gaia Hypothesis, the term sugeested by a novelist, which posits that biological and non-biological entities form a necessary continuem for life.  Humans can be conceived as a part of this fabric. And simplifying conceptual structures, expressed in words or math symbols, can be used to conceive relations among earthpeople holistically.

Since spiritual views are transmitted historically over long periods of time, the fusion of science and spirtuality might involve pre-scientific, indeed, pre-agricultural, views.  Possibly something to think about.

Well, my efforts are being trivialized if they’re merely laudable good deeds; but that may enable me to sneak up on the target.  The intention, of course, is to exemplify communism, but there is a strong undertow which causes people to construe it as charity, even among the revolutionaries

I did not intend to trivialize, only applaud. Groups such as the one you mention, do important work in the community, and, if they also seek to teach, may set a trend that lasts and makes changes to a society rancid with greed and indifference.

Over forty years ago I joined a group that dedicated itself, in a time of chaos and violence, to community service as well. I think we made a bit of a difference then and believe it a significant way to progress now.

I am sorry if my (apparently) ill chosen words construed a different meaning upon the thoughts behind them.

Anarcissie’s good deeds, which (within the moral-ized CONtext where they’re being done) will surely not escape punishment, nevertheless make the grade as one sort of “what-to-do.”  The exact nature of the “it” the deeds are doing something “about,” however, remains unspecified….perhaps because pinning “it” down to “civilization” itself, as this Old Indian suggests, carries implications still much too unsettling for most of its inmates to contemplate.

So the shared sense so essential to reining-in the rampant excess ruining our Living Arrangement remains “elusive” largely perhaps because so many otherwise decent people are afraid to reach outside their “individual” comfort zones and take ‘hold of “it.”  Meantime, “it” CONtinues to tighten what is intended to be a death-grip on homo domesticus, our Mother Earth, and ALL Her Children.

Something’s gotta GIVE here….

TAO Walker—I know what to do about it.  It’s that “mutual understanding” that eludes me.

So I’ve been going in the park with Food Not Bombs and giving away food free to all comers, rich and poor.  Propaganda of the deed, since words don’t help.  I know that—I’ve passed out slips of paper that quote Laurie Anderson:  “You were born.  And so you’re free.  So, happy birthday!”  And “La comida no se niega a nadie.”  Not much recognizance.  So, soup and a few cookies.

But people still don’t get it.  So, now what?

Report this

By TAO Walker, October 2 at 5:34 pm #

Anarcissie’s latest post here gets around to wondering-out-loud “....what to do about it.”  Before there can be any worthwhile agreement about the what-to-do, however, some shared sense of what the “it” actually IS has to be reached.  So far, from here in Indian Country, the widespread lack of that mutual understanding appears to be the “really big” obstacle keeping the domesticated peoples from making together any beneficially effective response to their common (and daily more dire) predicament.  In fact, that lack leads them to only worsen their plight by their every attempt to remedy it.

This CONdition of institutionalized ignorance compels each sub-sect of the sub-species homo domesticus to locate the “cause” of their own particular set of problems “out-there” in the imperfect virtual ‘world’ somewhere….in “foreign” ideologies or nations or economies or organisms or what-have-you, in “unbelievers” of this that or another stripe.  Additionally, even within various outwardly “common-interest” groups, there are always
factions vying for CONtrol of whatever is the group’s supposed stock-in-trade….and, through that, of the lives of the members theirownselfs.  The fractured state of theamericanpeople right now is a typical example.

It is, of course, the very nature and purpose of “civilization” to keep its many herds of merely cosmetically different captive humans focused intently on these entirely superficial distinctions, and to find in them sufficient cause for whatever aggressive/“defensive” behaviors toward “others” might be called-for (by the “managers” of the “global” feedlot) from time to time and place to place.  Being kept so obsessively preoccupied with such make-believe “threats” serves to keep the CONtraption’s inmates from figuring out together that their status as two-legged livestock is exactly THE “it” from which everything so destructively besetting them these Days originates.

“Civilization,” as a specific process, leads to a specific CONdition.  It presents here in the Living Arrangement of our Mother Earth as systemic disease….terminal by design and intent.  It’s apparent “success,” so far, lies in its perpetrators having first targeted a component of Her immune system, Humanity, for subversion by their domestication process….in order to suppress Her immune function so the tormentors’ own wannabe-parasitic “energy” systems could be, in-effect, grafted onto Her body.  The co-opted two-leggeds were then set to CONstructing the monstrous apparatus required to degrade Her Native Vitality into the several forms of degenerate “energy” the tormentors’ own sick selfs subsist on….and to which their tamed human tools have also become, as “individuals” and “....huddled masses” alike, (hopelessly?) addicted.

So if the “it” Anarcissie and others are wondering “....what to do about” is their own CONtrived CONdition as domesticated “individuals,” they’re fortunate in having something available that is NOT a matter of mere “opinion.”  The Medicine they need is not “out there” anywhere.  It’s not in “science” or “saviors” or electro-mechanical “servants” of some kind.

It IS in their own free wild Human Nature.  It is in the incorruptible integrity of our Native Organic Form….which Lakotah/Dakotah/Nakotah People call Tiyoshpaye.  It is in fulfilling, with integrity, our given Organic Function within Her Natural Living Arrangement.  It is in paying, to Her and to All Our Relations, our unconditional Respect and our undivided precious attention….the only “price-of-admission” there is to the never-ending Song ‘n’ Dance of Life Herownself.

Our tormentors think there is a way to “cheat” their way through The-Eye-Of-The-Needle.  Some of their self-styled “elite” two-leggeds tools also evidently think so.  They’re all about to find out otherwise….the hard way.

Don’t let ‘em fool you, too, Sisters and Brothers.

I rather agree with TAO Walker on this one: the Democrats cannot enact change because no one can enact (significant) change using the existing political and social machinery.  (At least, that’s what I got out of what he, she or they wrote.)  Even moderates, mainstreamers, are beginning to come to this opinion.  Why, for instance, are “we” in Afghanistan?  Same reason “we” were in Vietnam:  we’re there because we’re there because we’re there, and if we stop being there the world may come to an end.  No politician wants to be blamed for that.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the “conservative” parties move to the left; the “socialist” parties move to the right; do-si-do….

The presently unanswerable question is what to do about it.  Everyone’s got at least one opinion but identifiable success on the ground is hard to find.

Angela Merkel “campaigned on a platform that said a center-right coalition was necessary to undo the damage caused by the global credit crash.” And the German electorate doesn’t want to continue with Bush wars. So, for the conservative candidate who wants to control, distancing from the wars while promising to fix what they have broken, works.

This contradiction underscores how little “the German electorate” or anybody else, for that matter, understands the reality behind the global credit crash. Out of control Corporatists, Banks, Brokers, and greed driven shareholders and suckers, (domestic and international) looking for obviously impossible to sustain returns!

All very conservative behaviours, all repetitious and predictable, and all as far removed from fixing anything as is humanly possible. Yet the German voter (much like our own) seems to see the very center-right behaviours that cause our woes as the way to turn them around.

Could that be why nothing ever gets fixed?

When Social programs work, it’s because government maintains a level of control that keeps the greedy at bay. When Social programs fail, it’s because government caves in to pressure from the greedy, and allows them to somehow profit from the tax dollars intended to go to Social programs. Nothing new here. Greed, duplicity and the so-called center-right are old as evil. And by the way, greed and duplicity can also be found on the so-called center-left.

Maybe we need to stop playing this foolish game of center and call rotten out when we see it.

Ignorance reflected by those who support that which works against their own best interests historically defines conservatism. Left, right or center, it’s still another old as evil.

Kings, potentates, politicians and candidates may be smart enough to target and blend the things the people unite against, but that doesn’t mean they have any intention of changing. To control and hold all the power, all the wealth and all the folks who do the work, also old as evil. Which is why, no matter how many times our financial system collapses, and no matter how many times we try to fix it, it still bleeds under the band-aid.

We simply refuse to put a stop to the damage the greedy centrists can do.

So we keep on letting them do it.

Maybe someday the human race will grow up enough to actually, honestly understand when they are being snookered.

But I doubt it will happen in my lifetime.

Meanwhile that civilization that is far older than ours, replicates our imitating their very bad behaviour. Once the teachers, they’re now stuck with the product of their example.

“Congress won’t save the world environment if it takes any money from American shareholders and commodity speculators; the American capitalist model is now a world disgrace; the American wars are against adolescent gunmen with religious missions and can never be won; and there has been no serious anti-Western terrorism in nearly a decade—except in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. people are heartened that some Republicans may actually stop the financial
raping and government intrusion, and NOW THE WAR, because they “get it” and
are now emboldened to take to the streets, less likely to be shot at or tazed.
The “progressives” have become know as NEO-libs or corporatists.

The Democrats have absolutely no clue of the condition they are in. You can
see it in the way they act.

So lets roll the credits of the names of those who brought down the Democratic
majority in record time. Maybe that is what they wanted anyway:
-Obama (for lack of focus, morals or resolve to help the American people in
any meaningful way, and lying regularly)
-The Democratic party lawmakers (for being unable to stop pis-sing trillions of
dollars down the toileet of their payback partners)
-Pelosi (for insulting voters, lying about her own collusion, and blocking just
about every attempt to investigate anything)
-Reid (for being a downright sneak)
-Jarret (for constant misjudgements and an attitude that no one matters more
than her or her agenda)
Olberman, Maddow, Matthews, Rhodes, Huffpo, Shultz, and the other
Democratic blogs (for racing each other to employ exactly the same tactics that
the Bushies were criticised for and also insulting everyone that does not agree
with what they think Obama wants)
-Dodd, Frank, Shumer, Feinstein, Murtha, Rangel, Harmon, and all the other
useless lawmakers (for taking large amounts of lobby dollars and faking
concern for the American people, and for being NO different from the neo-
cons, and for putting the narrow and temporary window they had to change
things up for sale)
-Glibbs (for being almost impossible to listen to or watch)
-Timmy the Tax Cheat, Bernanke, and all financial wizards (for stealing
unfathomable money, in broad daylight, from the American people while
blocking reform of all kinds)
-Rice (for being a total shill for the Zionists)
-Michelle Obama (for being constantly clueless and insensitive toward the
American people by flaunting a wasteful, condescending lifestyle while people
are suffering)
-All the male talking heads that insult women in politics that they don’t agree
with, no matter how old they are ( this really makes people mad)
-The Clintons, especially Bill (for blowing up the economy by signing the repeal
of Glas Steigel, for allowing media consolidation that killed the press, for
NAFTA which destroyed American jobs and ignited immigrant racism, and for
being in general, a lying sleeze(s))
-Obama’s crazy doctor friends (who scared the ever-lovin crap out of seniors
and other people)
-and, again, Obama (for being just as much of a warmonger as Bush was, but
with renewed resolve to allow innocent people to be slaughtered, anonymously
this time, by drones)

Good riddance. I’m ready for something new.

The commentaries focus on the parties thereby painting a right shift. But in Germany this seems to have been achieved because the right actually has shifted to the center, adopting some positions previously advocated by the left. So on policy there is no changes of significance. And if anything some “conservative” leanings have been abandoned.

It’s interesting that (according to a story in today’s or yesterday’s NYT) Germany alone among the Europeans is as worried about Iran as Israel is—i.e. more worried than the U.S., more worried than other Europeans. As Inherit says, Germany’s party is anti-racism, pro sensible economic policies, and “leery” of foreign wars and still calls itself conservative. Perhaps this is because some Germans remember and worry about the ‘80s Baader-Meinhoff gang’s reign, sometimes described as radical leftists and sometimes as anarchists. Another reason could be that Germans worry about sooner or later being in range of Iran’s missiles, though if France, Spain and Italy aren’t worried that particular fear would also be unique among Europeans.

Germany also has a great medical system, mostly public with private options, which is apparently too much to expect from our liberal-centrist Democrats.

The working assumption of William Pfaff and most here offering sincere comments to his article seems to be that there is a real and necessary and worthwhile distinction to be drawn between all this informed parsing and dissecting of various ideo-political “power”-poll CONtests, and a bunch of guys at a bar somewhere in ‘heated discussion’ over the finer points of the performances of their respective fantasy football teams.  None of it, however, has anything whatsoever to do with what’s actually taking place within the Living Arrangement of our Mother Earth….nor with the given place of Humanity here.

It’s as if people who’ve up-to-now been enjoying a lifetime of cavorting in the mirrored ‘fun-house’, on the midway of mercantilism, have become so obsessed with their own distorted reflections that they’ve stayed blissfully ignorant of the homo domesticus-made holocaust against Nature already scorching the shell of their all-american (or -european or -panasian) palace-of-dreams.  Meantime, they remain slap-happily CONvinced the “freaks” are all safely CONfined to “....that house across the road.”

There are a couple of pieces up on this site presently featuring the official debasement and commercial corruption of language as being a particularly noxious entry among the many other ‘plagues’ unleashed upon this “modern” world.  If our tame Sisters and Brothers can’t find some way to penetrate the smothering shroud of institutionalized ignorance entrapping them, “individual”-ly and en masse, woven entirely of make-believe spun out of waffle-words, their prospects are indeed grim.

“Civilization” and all of its enabling apparatus is nothing but a “global” shell-game.  The suckers, “....your huddled masses” everywhere, are today pretty nearly tapped-out, but still think that they can get it all back by doubling-down just one more time.  So they’ve bet the lives of their greatgrandchildren against the house-of-horrors their virtual world has become.

The Left, Liberals, advocate the use of “assets that provide a revenue stream”, capital, in the greater good of the society as a whole.

The Right, Conservatives, advocate the use of “assets that provide a revenue stream”, capital, in the greater greed of an exclusive privatized segment of society that is not inclusive of the society as a whole.

When Americans talk about European politics they normally put their foot in it. Mr. Pfaff is not all that wrong in what he says about the European Left but he needs to put it in perspective. First of all America doesn’t have a real Left Party, it doesn’t even have a Socialist Party, it has the Republicans and the Democrats who (both elitist), are two cheeks of the same backside that is hooked to corporate America and the military industrial complex which doesn’t give a rats ass about anyone. What you have in America are individuals fighting for the poor and downtrodden, there are NO political parties. That’s the first big difference.
Secondly, you have to make a distinction between the UK and the rest of Europe. Many people in the UK are as ignorant of Europe both culturally and politically as many Americans. They possess the same arrogance in that they are incapable of conceiving that anyone lives a better life than they do. Especially those unfortunates who support Manchester United FC.

The country that is the most industrially powerful and politically innovative is Germany. The SPD (socialists) have just suffered an electoral defeat. Now it would be sensible for them to go back to their roots and link up with Lafontaine’s Die Linke, but they won’t because Lafontaine wants the soldiers out of Afghanistan and for Germany to leave NATO. But as NATO is nothing more than a lickspittle, lackey to America’s Empire that wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Oh, and Merkel will never become an iron lady has some stupid British writers have suggested.

So to quote Mark Twain, the reports of the death of Europe’s Left is grossly exaggerated.

Commune, only three Nato ‘allies’ in the Afpak war are supplying fighting combat troups: Canada, Britain and Netherlands.  The Europeans don’t fight because the population, left to right, don’t want to.  and they don’t want to in Britain and Canada as well.

In the US, Buchanan, the racist fascist, is an isolationist, and wants to withdrawn militarily from the world.  Me too, for that matter.

Europe, like China and Russia, give lipserice to Iran sanctions, but that is just to humor the US.  Iran is trading with everyone and developing rapidly economically.

the US is simply losing its clout and other countries are pretending to go along, since Great Powers who are losing power are very dangerous and touchy militarily. It was when Nazi Germany was losing the war that they accelerated their genocides. Great Powers who are losing world powers are seldom good power.

But, as Hobsbawm notes, imperialism genertes megalomania, and the US power structure likes to pretend that it is still a Superpower.

a European conservative is still more liberal than an american democrat. However, a large part of the ideological shift in Europe involves a movement against immigration. Most europeans realize that the influx of countless immigrants from eastern Europe and the war torn and increasingly fundamentalist middle east, have caused a strain on the social services of western europe. They know that if they continue down that road it will overtax the system.(this problem sound familiar?)

But one thing you can say for Europeans, despite a worldwide economic downturn, they have not turned on each other. Can we say the same for us here in america?

If I refer to myself as an anarchist, should I always put quotation marks around the word?  Is that the custom now?

Yo, If Europe is complacent, then America is in a fucking coma. Ive lived over here since 93, and when ANYTHING happens here that folks dont like, they hit the streets and break shit up. The citizens of the US, who have WAY more to lose, are being shown that even peaceful gatherings will end in arrests and injury.
True, this election proved to be frustrating, but it was no surprise given the current economic situation.
Britain, the US´s closest ally, is the most facist of European countrys, its streets lined with cameras and other surveillance devices, and is in lock-step with the yanks.  They are the Europeans to watch and worry about.

By comparing the Christian Democratic + the Free Democratic Party votes (48%) to the Social Democrats + the Left + the Green Party votes (45%), Germany’s rightward lurch looks more like a mild nudge.  What seems to be happening is that the two major parties have become “Americanized” in that there’s not much difference between them in what they stand for.  This has cut into the votes of both parties, the SPD especially with its ‘lost’ votes going leftward to the Left & the Green parties.  The same thing happpened in the election in France a couple years ago, with the French Socialists suffering big losses and the far left making impressive gains.  Presumably it would happen here, too, if it wasn’t for these winner take all elections.  Seems to me it’s a sign of serious voter dissatisfaction in Western nations with the status quo.  Opportunity for the left?  Yes, but just as much for the right.  Which way will it go?  Perhaps it depends on what (& who) captures the popular imagination, the right’s only too familiar vision of a god-fearing repressive macho society or a yet to be clarified left vision whereby we break with the past and make our way along the upward slopes of freedoms majestic heights.  And since time’s running out, what with perpetual war + global warming + economic collapse = doomsday, it’s not only up to us, it’s now or never.

Europe is going right-wing because there are no real, revolutionary left alternatives. Their “socialist” parties are similar to Chile’s Michelle Bachelet or Brazil’s Lula, socialists in title only but they never bring any real reforms or much less revolution. Sadly, the more radical groups, such as students, see “anarchism” as the cool new trend, so they just go around burning ATMs as in Greece, but have no serious political alternatives to offer. A situation similar to here in the US, you have people in Pittsburgh fighting SWAT thugs, but they don’t form parties or get organized because they are “anarchists.”

I disagree with Folktruther on the stances of the European right in relation to US wars, they are big fans of the Afghan war and are cheerfully joining in in threatening Iran.

What’s happening historically , Inherit, is a new left is forming since the old left sold out so badly.  In the interim the right wins elections.  but note that even the European right wants nothing to do with the US wars, a left position.

I dunno—howze it werken?
On the one hand, in the US, we have as “conservatives” crazy birthers, anti-darwinists, racists, total tools of Goldman,Sachs and AIG, imbeciles who call the President a liar in Congress, and fools who still believe that Saddam Hussein was supporting Al Qaeda.

In Germany you have a party that’s anti-racism, for sensible economic policies, and is leery of foreign wars that calls itself “conservative”...in fact, they sound a LOT like American Democrats and Obama….

What was the question again?
