What Are the Birthers Really After?

By Joe Conason

On Aug. 4, President Barack Obama celebrated the anniversary of his birth, an event that occurred 48 years ago in the state of Hawaii. This is an indisputable fact, as sane critics on the right, such as the editors of the National Review and the veteran pundit Patrick Buchanan, acknowledge. And yet there is a significant minority, especially within the Republican Party, that fervently insists otherwise.

Why this obsession over Obama’s birthplace persists is a question that evokes disturbing answers.

It was probably inevitable that the election of the first African-American president, a man of mixed racial heritage whose father was Kenyan and whose middle name is Hussein, would stir resentments among the farthest right-wing fringe of American society. There are still people, often clustered in groups that falsely claim to be “conservative” and “patriotic,” who have never accepted the social advances that we have made in the years since Obama’s birth—which occurred in an era when the marriage of his white mother and black father remained illegal in some states.

But if the Obama presidency provokes a certain kind of old bigot, it is also true that the spinning of conspiracy theories, outlandish myths and paranoid fantasies is nothing new in presidential politics. Not long after the Clintons entered the White House in 1993, they became the targets of a stream of poisonous lies, emanating from many of the same sources that are defaming the Obamas today.

The same “news sites,” notably Newsmax.com and WorldNetDaily, and the same right-wing radio personalities, from Rush Limbaugh downward, sought to convince the public that the Clintons were serial killers, drug kingpins, traitors and communists, bent on dissolving American sovereignty into a socialist world government. Those wild accusations were part of a broader right-wing strategy to discredit and curtail Bill Clinton’s presidency.

If not a “vast right-wing conspiracy,” as Hillary Clinton famously called it, the network behind this effort was indeed very large and extremely determined, and seems to have inflicted permanent damage on our political discourse as well as the mental health of the conservative movement.

Consider the flight from reality of the so-called birthers, who claim that Mr. Obama was actually born in Kenya. To believe that canard, they must also believe that Mr. Obama’s mother and grandparents conspired to publish notices of his birth in not one but two Honolulu newspapers in August 1961; that the current Republican governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, a dedicated partisan and strong supporter of her party’s nominee, John McCain, conspired last year and is conspiring now to conceal the truth about Mr. Obama’s birth certificate, along with a host of Hawaii state officials; and that one of several obviously forged “Kenyan” documents is the true Obama birth certificate.

Even Buchanan, who has spent a lifetime agitating white fear, admits that’s nutty. But the mealy-mouthed spokesmen for the Republican Party, on Capitol Hill and in states across the country, dare not say so. They cower before the talk jocks and kooks who have seized the leadership of the right. Much of this madness is just cynical posturing, designed to increase ratings and hits, to sell silly books and fleece the rubes of their money. To understand the phoniness behind the hysteria, recall that anti-Obama propagandists Christopher Ruddy and Richard Mellon Scaife, the owners of Newsmax, used to traffic in all of the Clinton conspiracy nonsense—until they sought a reconciliation with the Clintons over the past few years and admitted that their old accusations were utterly wrong. Why would anyone trust their accusations against the president now?

Most Americans never will. But the clear purpose of birther propaganda is not to win a majority by democratic means, but to drive a minority of a minority into turmoil and even violence—as indicated by their behavior at this month’s congressional town hall meetings. Should we experience another tragedy like the Oklahoma City bombing, the blood and the ruin will be on their conscience.

We went to war with Iraq because of false documents but no one comments on that.

What is wrong with the short birth cerificate it states place of birth and date what more is needed.

There is a thing going on and it has nothing to do with where Obama was born.

When people tell me this they don’t say who is “they say” and when I ask who is they I get no answer.

I think the people who say he is not our president are those who don’t want Obama to be president.

Some even think that Obama will be taken from the office of president.

Also some people do not know the law just because his father was born in Kenya and is a muslim people will say he is not native born and must be a muslim because his father was one.

There are a lot of ingorant people who vote.

“The Obama campaign released a 2007 certified abstract copy of his Certification of Live Birth (sometimes called a “short form”) that states Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961. A common complaint of those questioning Obama’s eligibility is that he has not released a photocopy of his original, official birth certificate – only a short official certification of live birth. Asked about this, Department of Health Spokeswoman Janice Okubo stated that Hawaii “does not have a short-form or long-form certificate.” The director of her Department has stated that the state holds Obama’s “original birth certificate on record in accordance with state policies and procedures.”

Some of the people challenging Obama’s eligibility have alleged that his short-form certificate was forged, or that he was born in Kenya. Others allege that Obama became a citizen of Indonesia, or that because he had dual citizenship at birth (British and US), he is not a natural-born citizen of the US.

A number of lawsuits have been filed seeking to disqualify Obama from standing or being confirmed as President, or to obtain better proof that he is qualified. Three have been filed with the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Court has refused to hear them. None of the cases has prevailed in lower courts. Although Obama was duly confirmed as president-elect by Congress on January 8, 2009, and sworn in as President on January 20, litigation has continued into his presidency.

Some Republican congressmen are either skeptical about Obama’s citizenship or unwilling to acknowledge it…..

......A birth notice for Barack Obama was published in both the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin on August 13 and August 14, 1961 respectively, listing the home address of Obama’s parents as 6085 Kalanianaole Highway in Honolulu. On August 3, 2009, in response to the growing controversy, the Advertiser posted on its Web site a screenshot of the announcement taken from its microfilmed archives. Such notices were sent to newspapers routinely by the Hawaii Department of Health.

In a scathing editorial published on July 29, 2009, the Star-Bulletin pointed out that both newspapers’ vital-statistics columns are available on microfilm in the main state library. “Were the state Department of Health and Obama’s parents really in cahoots to give false information to the newspapers, perhaps intending to clear the way for the baby to someday be elected president of the United States?” the newspaper asked sarcastically.

......May 27
At a end of the May 27, 2009 press briefing, WorldNetDaily reporter Lester Kinsolving asked about President Obama’s birth certificate. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs quickly replied “It’s on the Internet”, to which Kinsolving responded “No, no, no—the long form listing his hospital and physician.” Gibbs responded as follows:

Lester, this question in many ways continues to astound me. The state of Hawaii provided a copy with the seal of the President’s birth. I know there are apparently at least 400,000 people—(laughter)—that continue to doubt the existence of and the certification by the state of Hawaii of the President’s birth there, but it’s on the Internet because we put it on the Internet for each of those 400,000 to download.”

Certainly, you are right, MarthaA, it is more. But I’m not sure comparing the current proto-Nazis to Hitler’s brown shirts is the key. There is a different role now for business, government, and the media:
The American media paradigm is quickly becoming the gladiator forum of visual and verbal images. The few corporate executives who run the media exercise “emperor” power in calling the games, defining the action and controlling the forum.

They pick the news and present their reality to American spectators who have come to expect conflict, violence, anger and resentment in their big-screen, stories, blending into the images of car chases, murders, and celebrity watches.

The health care arm of the power elite has furnished the verbal violence and an angry truth that is packaged with the ingredients that the corporate news seeks: anger, conflict, and violence. But don’t bother if you’re protesting the war or defending rights. No news cameras will appear. Denigrating President Obama and mocking serious discussion is real news.

This is a partial picture too.

Bogi666, is this the Hermann Göring quote you were thinking of?

“Naturally the common people don’t want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

I have a nicely-sized collection of quotations in my hard drive, about 218 pages in length.

Thank you thank you Raven Burnes for being the first person who appears to have understood my question and attempted to answer it. Whilst I find your answer rather unconvincing you do at least recognize that Obama has not done something he could do to quash the issue fairly convincingly. And, despite what you say it would not use up very much of his time and energy.

Obviously some cranks will still live in their fantasy world even if the full birth certificate is produced but it would surely make it a lot easier to divide the cranks from those like myself who are merely puzzled.

To Ted Swart:

Maybe President Obama doesn’t produce his original birth certificate because he’s running a country with a failed economy, that’s involved in several international conflicts, and is trying to reform health care against fierce opposition from those who stand to profit from the status quo.  In other words, maybe he’s busy and has higher priority items to attend to. He will never be able to “prove himself” to bigots who will hate and oppose him no matter what he says or does.  If the birth certificate is ever subpoenaed, it’ll turn up at that point.  In the meantime, President Obama has a country to run.

Purple Wolf:

You—rather disparagingly—say:
“Ted Swart: The birth certificate has been produced and it is also online. Some people, you included, will never believe the truth when it is right in front of your face, so it matters not if more proof is given to you and others like you, you will still ignore the truth and demand what you already have.  Some people will deny the truth regardless. Sound familiar?”

But you have also not answered my question.  You talk of “<The> birth Certificate” as if there is only one kind of birth certificate. I happen to have been born in South Africa and South Africa like Hawaii has both a full form birth certificate and an abridged birth certificate. And ,when I emigrated, I was obliged to produce a notarized copy of my full birth certificate. The abridged version was not regarded as adequate proof of all the details of my birth.
What is so difficult about getting your mind round this distinction?

You unfairly say that: “if more proof is given to you and others like you, you will still ignore the truth.” I have in fact said nothing about what I do and don’t regard as “the truth”. As far as I am concerned the chance that Barack Obama was born in Kenya is vanishingly small.  However, there remains a mystery as to why Obama has not come forward and released a copy of his full birth certificate.
Do you or anyone else have any suggestion(s) as to why he has failed to do this? Surely my question is simple enough.

I am sorry but you have not answered my question at all and have simply ignored it.  I don’t think that I am ignorant about the situation at all. I know enough to be aware that Hawaii has two forms of Birth Certificate.  The full form with all the relevant details and an abridged form—which has been made public in Obama’s case.
My question remains.  What possible reason could there be for the fact that Obama not released the full certificate? I still wait for a suggested answer.

The disruptors at these event need to be escorted out of these meetings. During some of the presidential campaign there were times when these same types of sheeple tried to sabotage the democratic campaign. I saw at republican campaign people who held signs for the opposite party were escorted out, even though they sat quietly in the audience. Any persons who disrupt an event should be taken outside, fined and released and not be allowed back inside the meeting and to those who try to incite violence at these events, arrest them and lock them up immediately. People have already been hurt by these fanatics who don’t even realize they are fighting against their own best interest.
Now that’s what I call lunatic fringe.

Birthers want to return all of us to the time when the church ruled everything. Bad move, if they ever went back and studied history, they would change their minds, provided they had anything left upstairs to think with as they may have been so brainwashed, the truth would never have a chance to enter their closed minds.

Birthers-I mean republicans, as no doubt they all are- were and are the poorest losers. They cannot accept the fact they are not in power in the White House. They showed the world their backside when Clinton won over Bush I and slandered and hounded him for 2 terms in office. Where were they when BushII/Cheney, the ones who actually did real harm to America? Hiding in their bunkers?

And when are the birthers going to demand to see a copy of Jesus’s birth certificate? And where he was born, as there is a lot of discrepancies on that.

There’s an article at Alternet.org that exposes just who’s behind at least some of the “anti-healthcare” supposed “advocates”.  Scum, that’s what the insurance companies are…... complete and utter scum, these are blantant attempts to UNDERMINE DEMOCRACY.

“While trying to give the appearance of a “grassroots” uprising, the demonstrations are cover for a corporate-lobbyist engineered harassment strategy that encourages participants to “yell,” “stand up and shout,” and “rattle” elected officials in favor of reforming health care. Their goal—recently outlined by an influential lobbyist as “delay” then “kill”—is apparent: Having successfully delayed a vote until after the August recess, lobbyists are seizing on town halls to ambush lawmakers in an attempt to fool them and the greater public into thinking there is wide opposition to health care reform. Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs took a “hard line against the Tea-Party organized disruptions,” labeling them a “Brooks Brothers Brigade,” a reference to GOP staffers staging protests during the 2000 Florida recount.

The Memos: As with the tea parties, these town halls are “lessons in how political interests enlist human and technological resources to build political pressure while those responsible remain safely behind the curtain.” Last week, The Progress Report obtained a leaked memo from a volunteer with Tea Party Patriots, a website sponsored by Americans for Prosperity (AFP) (led by a former associate of Jack Abramoff) and FreedomWorks (led by former Republican Majority Leader and current lobbyist Dick Armey). The memo detailed how town hall goers should infiltrate meetings and harass Democratic members of Congress. The memo said activists should “stand up and shout out and sit right back down” so the representative is “made to feel that a majority, and if not, a significant portion of at least the audience, opposes the socialist agenda of Washington.” The overall goal, said the memo, is to “rattle” the elected official. Earlier this week, a FreedomWorks volunteer, who doubles as a Tea Party protester, published another memo that outlined a strategy “for his fellow activists—a playbook of sorts for protesters seeking to disrupt and harass members of Congress during town hall forums in their districts.”

This is an example of the oldest and most repugnant of the tools in the Republican bag of tricks. They haul this out whenever they wish to muddy the waters with lies and innuendo, and we have seen it at work during the Clinton presidency and in every election since. They rely on obfuscation to divide the attention of those watching the political process at work. They’ve reasoned if they start hollering some lie at the top of their lungs over to the side of the main action, it will divert the attention of the media away from anything good the intended victim of the attack might be doing at the time. Sadly, the media is comtemptibly happy to go along, thus all the furor in the news. There’s no difference between these so-called Birthers and the Swift Boat Liars. None. Of course, the Republican Party has employed the classic plausible deniability maneuver, using their vast and well-funded crowd of liars and scoundrels who can be bought with phony idealism and perhaps the promise of advancement within the party structure. There are always those present in any society who can be bought and used by those who wish to control that society. That describes the Republican Party perfectly. They want to run this country, and they’ll do anything to make it happen.

No because it has been produced and verified and are ignored. It happens a lot when allegations are made then proof is produced and they just either ignore it or say it is a fake. So what you are saying seems reasonable for someone ignorant of the situation.

Look at how the Creationists/I.R. attack evolution or the Global Warming skeptics—-they follow the same script and will use items again that work even though they have been shown to be lacking in veracity. It doesn’t stop them because most of those who follow them distrust other media. And they won’t let a good hook go to waste just because it is false!

They seem to be winning because the seed of doubt has been planted and more people are picking up on that. Stupid people who will not check it out. Willfully stupid and uninformed people are the bulk of our society. With some education they could overcome it but their egos won’t let them consider the idea they are stupid. Conason should not even suggest another conspiracy theory. It is simply a corrupt force trying to retain money and power, not caring if anyone is destroyed in the process. It is the health care industry’s desperate hold on power and money. It is Bush’s warmongerers excusing collateral damage in the pursuit of their agenda, killing perhaps 1 million Iraqi civilians in the process.

Inherit The Wind,

(Part 1 of 2)

CONSERVATIVE RIGHT-WING EXTREMIST attacks on Democratic Party Meetings, the Obama birth certificate sophistry, the sophistry of Rush Limbaugh and all CONSERVATIVE RIGHT-WING EXTREMIST attack media is a plan.

On August 5, 2009, National Public Radio reported that RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICANS were intentionally disrupting Democratic Party meetings at a local level; I have read about this type of POLITICAL ACTIVITY before, and I am aware that the following policy has been effectively used to disrupt legitimate political activity by competing political parties in the past:

“It makes no difference whatever, whether they laugh at us or revile us, whether they represent us as clowns or criminals; the main thing is that they mention us, that they concern themselves with us again and again, and that we gradually in the eyes of the workers themselves APPEAR to be the ONLY POWER that anyone reckons with at the moment.”

“One can never count on protection on the part of the authorities; on the contrary, experience shows that it ALWAYS and EXCLUSIVELY
benefits the DISTURBERS.  For the sole actual result of intervention by the authorities—- that is, the police—- was at best to dissolve, in other words, to CLOSE THE MEETING.  And that was the SOLE AIM and PURPOSE of the hostile DISTURBERS.”

“If through some sort of threats it becomes known to the AUTHORITIES that there is danger of a meeting being broken up, they DO NOT ARREST the THREATENERS, but forbid the others, the innocent, to hold the meeting, and what is more, the run-of-mill police mind is MIGHTY PROUD of such wisdom.  They call this a ‘precautionary measure for the prevention of an illegal act.’  Thus, the DETERMINED GANGSTER is always in a position to make political activity and efforts IMPOSSIBLE for decent people.  In the name of Law and Order, the State Authority gives it to the GANGSTER and requests the others please not to provoke him.”

Inherit The Wind,

(Part 2 of 2)

This is EXACTLY what the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN PARTY GANGSTERS are doing today, and has been doing for many years in the echo-chamber of the media.

The foregoing policy for disrupting political activity in competing political parties is from “Mein Kampf” by Adolph Hitler.  The RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN GANGSTERS are using “Mein Kampf” by Adolph Hitler as their Play Book to disrupt legitimate political activity of the Democratic Party at the Local Level, and at all levels of political activity by way of the RIGHT-WING MEDIA ECHO-CHAMBER; this is CRIMINAL ACTIVITY by RIGHT-WING EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN GANGSTERS of the Republican Party. If the United States is going to avoid what happened in Germany these RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN GANGSTER DISRUPTERS must be arrested, tried on issues of National Security and either executed or imprisoned as the CRIMINALS they are, as a threat to National Security. Adolph Hitler said, “Thus, the DETERMINED GANGSTER is always in a position to make political activity and efforts impossible for decent people.”  Hitler overthrew the government of the Weimar Republic and that is exactly what the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN PARTY GANGSTER DISTURBERS are, have been and are continuing to do.

And, you are right, if the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMISTS REPUBLICAN GANGSTERS get back into control, they will take over, and this time they will go into killing mode to rid the United States of all that disagree with their evil, which will end up being the blacks, the Native Americans, the Jews, the gypsies, and everyone else that isn’t of the Aryan race of blond haired, blue eyed monsters [Aryan race meaning of pure Gothic blood descended from the Goths, Ostrogoths and Visigoths], everyone else must die, plus all who have deformities, etc. in our diverse nation, or be used as slaves as was the Slavs, which is inclusive of the Russians, Poles, Czechs, Moravians, Wends, Slovaks, Bulgarians, Serbians, Croats, Slovenes, and etc. which were used as slaves and worked to death in Hitler’s Germany; the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN PARTY GANGSTERS are following Hitler’s Play Book to the “T”, and it seems to be working well for them, as noone seems to know this is EXACTLY what is happening.

WE THE PEOPLE of the United States must not allow DETERMINED DISRUPTIVE GANGSTERS of the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN PARTY to make political activity and efforts impossible for decent people as proposed by Adolph Hitler in the Play Book of the RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN PARTY, “Mein Kampf” by Adolph Hitler.  This is saying not only that there are RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN EXTREMISTS in the Republican Party, but that the Republican Party IS a RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE EXTREMIST REPUBLICAN PARTY.

“Seems like the only people in America who have solidarity are insane.”

You pinpointed the precise ideological problem, Hippie4.

The emotionally desirable truth of the American population diverges from the reality-based truth.  this was seen most dramatically in the comments to the Gates incident.  Americans are, just below the surface, highly racist, and this racism drives the birther movement, manipulated by the rich to serve their power interests.

This occurs constantly in the American media, making many White American people ideologically insane.  It is a communal insanity, a political irrationality, that prevents the American population to understand ‘what goes with what’ and to relate the particular to the general.  the most pernicious racism is not explicit, but is denoted by the phrase ” I am Not Racist But. The next clause is typically a racist one.

It is the Not Racist But crowd, which may include a majority of Progressives, that drives US oppression and enables the ruling class to loot the country with impunity.  It unites the population in what marxists call ‘false consciousness’ which includes the power delusions that legitimate oppressive authority.

the chilish absurdities which Americans believe is driven by regression through fear, in this cas fear of non-Whites.  when we regress to childish states, according to Bryant Welch in STATE OF CONFUSION, we tend to identify with an authority figure to protect us, like our father did in childhood.

Freud, in FUTURE OF AN ILLUSION, a pcych analysis of religious delusions, states religion itself is an attempt to identify a father figure who will Save and protect us as our parents did in childhood.  These religious delusions, common historically in feudal polities, have been replaced in capitalist polities by political delusions.

the Not Racist But ideology prevents the development of the power ideology for the American population which would create a solidarity that would enable us to resist oppressive American power.  the only solidary that exists, as Hippie4 points out, is that of the politically insane.  I, for one, am puzzled as to how to combat this effectively.

I agree with you PurpleGirl the Dominionists want the past that never was. Really they like the 17th century theocracies set up here to our republic. More than likely they will separate out all of those not Nordic-Aryan from the rest who would be deported or sent to live in “homelands” of an ethnic/racial basis to live. Like the bantustans of old S. Afrikaa. For them it would be easier. Then after that they will sift through everybody to find out all about us and who is a citizen of their empire and who is a slave or an apostate who must be killed.

The ‘birther’ movement was manufactured for a reason and it really doesn’t matter who at those rallies are paid to do it and all the rest who believe it and go to it on their own. That is the window dressing. The outcome? What are they keeping the corporate press from spending time on? Remember the CMSM likes to fill its time with twaddle whether it is a celebrity or just anything that isn’t real news or can be simplified to keep the masses fat and happy in between being anxious about tomorrow.

It is a distraction. We just need to know what important stories aren’t being as widely covered because of it.

What are the birthers really after? I think they’d do anything to avoid having to read a book or think for themselves. Seems like the only people in America who have solidarity are insane. I wish the supporters of the public option had the same commitment to this issue, that these loonies have for their bogus, GOP-trumped-up issue.

What do you *think* the “birthers” want, Mr. Conason? They want a Repub back in the White House by January 20, 2013! Simple. And any way this can be accomplished is good to them; the end justifies the means, y’know.

Of course, all sorts of unintended consequences may be strewn about the road back to Mordor-on-the-Potomac and political power; but they don’t care.

Personally, I’m enjoying this whole “birther” nonsense. It’s a barrel of laughs!

21st Century Charlie Mansons sitting on Capitol Hill and behind Microphones and pulpits.
Let’s not forget Charlie was hoping all his murders would be blamed on the Blacks. There would be a Race War- and after the dust settled Charlie and his Family would come out of their Refuge in Death Valley and ‘Inherit the World’.
Well the Repugs have let their Racist Freak flag fly-Between the Immigration Debate, Obama and Sotomayor. What could be more Deterimental to the Repug party than Flaggarently Flaunting your Racism? Prosecution for Abuse of Power?Treason? War Crimes? Crimes Against Humanity?
As for ‘Refuges’- apparently Sarah and her ilk in Alaska have already called Dibs on that. They Readily admit that they foresee some need for a ‘sanctuary’ from catastrophic event- natural or manmade is unclear, Just “god” inpsired. “god” is a generic term, thus relative to perspective(Zeus? Satan?)
This Radical Group which has seized unadulterated powers in the Repug party are ‘End of Dayers’ who not only worry about the possiblity, but are working to bring it to fruition. They Relish the idea, want to hasten it’s arrival. They Beleive it is their ‘destiny’ to be the chosen generation, like so many throughout history. But only this time they not only have influential political and economic power , but weaponry and training.
We have a serious National Security issue with these Psuedo Christian Jihadist, because it has infested every aspect of our Democracy, Judical System, Military & law enforcement, Mass Communications, Economy….
What they want is a Military Theocracy-Exactly what Iran is,and What Afghanistan is moving away from. What Europe Was when our Founders Waged a Revolutionary War! What they Want is fundamentally UN American. They confess their Treason everytime they open their mouths.

I am no conspiracy theorist.  But, despite what Joe Conason writes, there remains an incredible mystery about the whole issue of Barack Obama’s birth. We are told, by someone who claims to have seen it, that the original complete Hawaiian birth certificate does exist. So why is Obama so reluctant to take steps to ensure that it becomes public knowledge?  The same goes for details of his university records.
If anyone can answer this question sensibly and convincingly I will go away.

Reality simply doesn’t support their world view so they retreat from reality and in it’s place they erect a substitute reality.

It’s a mental illness. If I were a psychiatrist maybe I could attach a handy label to it. If they haven’t named this malady yet they need to do so soon so that we’d all have a handy way to refer to (and further marginalize) these people.

“Oh those guys? They suffer from ________inson syndrome.”

The Birthers and their cohorts are the lunatic fringe, prompted on by 10th rate psycho’s such as Limbaugh, Beck, the clinically obvious manic depressive,  and the like. They display their psychosis publicly as though their mental and emotional imbalances are a badge of courage. All 10th rate psycho’s and misery loves company so these psycho’s are propagating their psychosis so that it appear to be normal. At least the NAZI’s were 1st rate psycho’s and it took 1st rate psycho’s to take over Germany in the 20’s and 30’s. If I’m going to waste my time watching or listening to psycho’s I’ll watch Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler, Goering all 1st rate psycho’s whom the 10th rate birther psycho’s can’t hold a candle to. Most disturbing is that all it takes is 10th rate psycho’s today what used to take 1st rate psycho’s to do. We’ve been dumbed down and as the NAZI’S proved a country can easily be taken over by a small minority which is concisely explained by Herman Goering in a single paragraph.Check out his website.

Power and a return to segregation.

Here’s how they see the world organized:
A renewed caste system with Whites on top, and, among Whites, a sub-caste system of Protestants first, Catholics second and Jews third. Hispanics are only in this group if they are Spaniards, but are fourth.  Here a dumb, ignorant redneck Southern Baptist ranks an educated Catholic.

Second: Asian races (because “we” all know they are so smart and good businessmen.)
Japanese first,
then Koreans,
then Chinese
then Indians
then all the others that are educated.
Then all the others that are uneducated and therefore sub-human.

Third: Native Americans (except in Montana where they rank lower) That’s ‘cuz Indians are still cool. In Montana they are sub-human.

Fourth: Blacks
Fundi Christians rank first
Then athletes
Then businessmen
Then musicians and comedians
Then the left wing Christians.
then the “crime and welfare” types. Sub-human.

Fifth: Hispanics (except Spaniards)
First among those are educated with no Latino accent, but only if they are Republican
Second if they are not Republican.
Third are the rest with American accents.
Fourth are the immigrants, fit only to be gardeners.
Fifth are illegals—sub-human.

Enemies of all Christians, Jews and all “good” people: Any Moslems.  They are the “new Jews” to this modern nazi-like movement.

Part 2.

I know that my congressman was subjected to a BIZARRE crowd of supposed “anti-government” run healthcare (dare I say it) “advocates” (lol) at his town hall meetings.  This would be Rep. Steve Kagen.  In complete and utter depravity this crowd attacked Rep. Kagen regarding issues WHICH WERE NON-EXISTENT!  Do I think these people were legit, NO!  Is there plausiblity to say SOME were legit…..sure.  But not the MAJORITY, this was a staged event meant to show supposed discontent.  They were screaming their FOOL HEADS off in opposition to “government-run healthcare”, yet,..... during the Presidential Election a question was asked on our LOCAL ballots (just a question to ascertain the public will) which inquired, (I paraphrase) Do you support universal healthcare?  The response was over 75% in SUPPORT (I forget the specific percent) yet…. these CRAZIES who showed up at the Brown County Central Library in Green Bay, Wi. were RANTING UNCONTROLLABLY claiming opposition and in fact minority status.  LOL!!

The only thing I can be hopeful for is that THEY ARE A MINORITY….. the CRAZIES that is.  But absolutely, Mr. Conason is correct when asserting that these types are “attending” town hall meetings and subverting intelligent discourse regarding the true premise, nature and INTENT of town hall meetings.

My system, the cantankerous beast that it is, isn’t allowing me to use video or podcasts either, for that matter, however…. if you’re interested in video clarity of the crazies…..

This link will bring you to the channel 11 in Green Bay Wi (FOX News…what else?.lol) and, if interested, you should be able to decipher the rest.
http://www.fox11online.com/

Oh… and btw, the orginal broadcast (yes, I’m the lucky one….I saw it “live at five”) included a response from the local democratic party spokesperson, however….. sadly (yeah, I could’ve called this one) in the INTERNET CLIP it is “surprisingly” missing.

In response to your conjecture Mr. Conason, “What Are the Birthers Really After?”  I can only say… this is the conundrum isn’t it?  Surely it isn’t a birth certificate, since no matter how validly it is presented, the birthers remain unsatisfied.  So then…. I’m with you on this one….. What are the birthers really after?

Anyone…?

Part 1.

Quote: “To understand the phoniness behind the hysteria, recall that anti-Obama propagandists Christopher Ruddy and Richard Mellon Scaife, the owners of Newsmax, used to traffic in all of the Clinton conspiracy nonsense—until they sought a reconciliation with the Clintons over the past few years and admitted that their old accusations were utterly wrong. Why would anyone trust their accusations against the president now?”

Well…. it certainly WOULD lead one to wonder?  But let’s backtrack, what is a conspiracy and how does it differentiate from a conspiracy theory?  From Dictionary.com:

Conspiracy:
1. the act of conspiring.
2. an evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons; plot.
3. a combination of persons for a secret, unlawful, or evil purpose: He joined the conspiracy to overthrow the government.
4. Law. an agreement by two or more persons to commit a crime, fraud, or other wrongful act.
5. any concurrence in action; combination in bringing about a given result.

Synonyms (again, @ dictionary.com):
1. collusion, sedition. 2. Conspiracy, plot, intrigue, cabal all refer to surreptitious or covert schemes to accomplish some end, most often an evil one. A conspiracy usually involves a group entering into a secret agreement to achieve some illicit or harmful objective: a vicious conspiracy to control prices. A plot is a carefully planned secret scheme, usually by a small number of persons, to secure sinister ends: a plot to seize control of a company. An intrigue usually involves duplicity and deceit aimed at achieving either personal advantage or criminal or treasonous objectives: the petty intrigues of civil servants. Cabal refers either to a plan by a small group of highly-placed persons to overthrow or control a government, or to the group of persons themselves: a cabal of powerful lawmakers.

So…. who are “the birthers” and what by what means do they exist?

Conspiracy Theory (according to dictionary.com):

1. a theory that explains an event as being the result of a plot by a covert group or organization; a belief that a particular unexplained event was caused by such a group.
2. the idea that many important political events or economic and social trends are the products of secret plots that are largely unknown to the general public.

Hmmm…. what do you think?
