Fresh Air Versus a Bunker

Which reality do you inhabit, Obama World or Cheney World? If it’s the latter, remember that storm clouds are always gathering. Don’t forget your umbrella.

In Obama World, it’s always morning. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the pollen count is low. In Cheney World, it’s perpetual twilight. Somewhere in the distance, a lone wolf howls at the rising moon.

In Obama World, human beings are flawed but essentially decent and rational. Most will behave in a way consistent with enlightened self-interest. In Cheney World, humanity’s defects are indelible and irredeemable. Absent evidence to the contrary, evil should be assumed to lurk in every heart. Better to do unto others before they have a chance to do unto you.

In Obama World, choices are artifacts of reasoning and thus are only as valid as the logic underlying them. Security and freedom, for example, do not have to be seen as an either-or proposition. The nation never came to a fork in the road with one path labeled “torture” and the other labeled “disaster.” In Cheney World, choices are binary and absolute. There’s no wiggle room, no gray area, no time for second thoughts and no debate about how our options are framed. It’s my way or the highway, citizen.

In Obama World, objective fact matters. The failure to find any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq is significant. The absence of any link whatsoever between Iraq and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks is relevant. In Cheney World, facts are based more on conviction than evidence. If it’s possible to imagine “nuclear-armed terrorists,” as Cheney did in his speech the other day, then they “exist” at least as a concept—and this conceptual existence justifies torture, among other abuses.

In Obama World, some “threats” can be recognized as no threat at all. Since there has never been an escape from the federal “supermax” prison in Colorado, and since it already houses plenty of terrorists, spies and other miscreants, there’s no real reason to be concerned about transferring any of the Guantanamo inmates, even the worst of the lot, there. But in Cheney World, no threat, however remote, can be definitively ruled out—especially if there’s political hay to be made. And anyway, it’s fun to scare people.

Obama World buzzes with information overload—hundreds of cable channels, zillions of Web sites, constant “tweets” from Twitter. In Cheney World, it’s pretty much Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, all day, every day. It’s like the saying, “I like both kinds of music—country and western.”

In Obama World, Americans have a sense of community and shared purpose. Those upon whom fortune has smiled—through accident of birth, educational opportunity, career-enhancing connections or any other kind of “right place, right time” serendipity—recognize that extending a hand to those who do not enjoy such advantages is not just morally right, but ultimately beneficial to all. They believe that Henry Ford was right to pay his workers the shockingly high sum of $5 a day—so they could afford to buy the cars they were making.

In Cheney World, sharing is for saps. Obtaining great wealth and power has nothing to do with being “fortunate,” whatever that means. It’s all about preparation, focus and hard work. The idea that luck or connections could possibly have anything to do with, say, becoming the lavishly compensated chairman and chief executive of a mega-corporation such as Halliburton? Preposterous and un-American.

In Obama World, America exerts its leadership not just through force but through example. Our nation’s exceptionalism lies in its ideals of freedom, justice and opportunity for all, in its decency and generosity, in its commitment to the rule of law and its zeal for self-improvement, in its willingness to examine its own flaws and work to correct them. These intangibles are backed up by the world’s most powerful military, but it’s the ideals that matter most. When we lose sight of them, we head down the path of inevitable decline.

In Cheney World, ideals are nice and all that, but might makes right. We do what we want. Because we can. You got a problem with that?

Obama World is an exciting place to live right now—not perfect, to be sure, but full of energy and hope. If Dick Cheney wants to stay in his bunker, that’s his business. Others might want to come up for some fresh air.

Ardee—-I should have known you were a “she.”(“But
is it not the duty of a citizen to work for the nation SHE envisions?”)  You wanted something
political.  How about political correctness? (“But
is it not the duty of a citizen to work for the
nation THEY envision?”)  Years ago, I was the
bartender for the local college hangout.  At the
end of the night when I had to clean the bathrooms
the LADIES bathroom was always more trashy than the
MALE bathroom.  I always wondered “WHY?”  Got any
explanations?  Better throw in a Politically Correct
course along with that vocabulary course this summer.

Although I sometimes feel as ‘Ardee’ I think we need to give Obama just a little more time.  He is an incrementalist.  That may not always be the best way to get things done, but I believe it is his way.  At the end of 8 years we will clearly see whether anything has ‘changed’.

................

We seem to have little choice about “giving” Obama the time, winning that election gave him four years
worth of it.

But is it not the duty of a citizen to work for the nation she envisions? Thus simply sitting by silently seems less than ones duty to herself, her fasmily and her nation, would you disagree?

Speaking of “fresh air” that is something 13 trapped
coal miners lacked several years ago in West Virginia.  In fact they lacked ANY AIR let alone
fresh air.  The miners tagic death by suffocation
was a result of the owners of the mine only storing
30 minutes worth of oxygen in the mine.  Now you
would think that if a nation could go to the moon
and back it could pass a law requiring coal mine
owners to store a weeks supply of oxygen, food, and
water throughout the mines.  Wouldn’t really cost
millions, billions, or trillions being spent to bail
out various wealthy corporations.  The suffocation
of the miners occurred during President Bush’s
administrations.  He calls himself a Christian.
Many of the other politicians providing the bail
out money also call themselves Christian.  In the
Bible Jesus tells us not to judge a true Christian
by what they say BUT WHAT THEY DO!  I can hear the
false Christians in Washington, “What’s a few coal
miners?  Drag out the dead bodies and hire 13 more.
Let’s get that production line moving!  We need
money to bail out big business and the wealthy
bankers!”  My question for Washington is “WHO’S
GOING TO BAIL OUT THE COAL MINERS?”

Obama World is the Disney Land of politics where everyone is collegial, there are no political thugs, the corporations are responsible, the bankers are diserving of trust, Big Pharma and the Health insurance industry give way to sweet reason, the Republicans embrace the needs of the citizens, public education is effective and those for and against abortion picinic in the sunshine of mutual admiration. Moreover, there is no definition of torture and no accountability for those responsible for it. No one of authority will look into the evil events of the past because this will upset the ongoing display of rainbows of delight. Obama World is filled with the music of thoughtful change which will satisfy both the lions and the lambs. What more could the nation possibly need?

Unfortunately Obama was a candidate of promise but is already President of disappointment. We need a leader who sees problems clearly but we have a timid lawyer who is good with words but lacks the strenth of will to force the changes that are needed to return this country to a nation of principle.

The most suprising thing about Obama is a physical conundrum. Although he is tall he appears to be devoid of a spine. Spineless things like jelly fish and earth worms do not rise above their surroundings. Without a spine acts of greatness cannot be accomplished. Spine depends on moral character and strength of purpose. Where is Obama’s spine?

Obama World is pleasant to the ears and the eyes but it is not a place where greatness of purpose and acts of courage will ever occur.

“Pussy Galore” typifies the Repug party far better than the Dems.
Between their Fear mongering from everything to assimilated Detainees to Zealot Socialists and The hyterical fears of their own Exile into oblivion if they should speak out of line, slightly off the prescribed talking points doled out on a daily basis from Cheney’s “Undisclosed location’ or from Rush’s Golden Phallic symbol, the Repugs are undoubtedly the most Pussy Whipped Chicken Littles this country has ever seen.
Now they are fearful of a Latina Nominee- ‘she’s racist against white men, she’ll take over all legislative powers’ - They are Running and Screaming ‘Like lil’ Girls’
I’m not sure which is more embarassing or humiliating fro our Country a runner up in a beauty contest who can’t tell the difference between a State and a Country/ Nation or the spineless Screaming MeMe ‘s who act as our Public Servants. If there is another “9/11” it will be because one of our Poltiical Partys has shown they have NO Testicular Fortituded! The attackers will have no doubt that they will once again run amok in a ‘hair on fire’ blind frenzy once again Proving the very accusations levied against our Country which they used as recruiting propaganda.Honestly if there is ‘another 9/11’ I’ll be looking to Cheney et al (CIA) and What their part was in facilitating it. You are not Paranoid if they have proven they are out to get you.they have abused this Nation and her Citizens for their own political, egotistical and economic gains.
It’s time we stop playing their game and hand the prosecutions for Torture,Rendition,Black Sites and hit Squads over to the International community stemming from War crimes and crimes against Humanity.Cheney and his henchmen should not be afforded Our Nations Legal system,It’s EMPATY or accomodations.
Once those are Proven, We may then begin proceedings in regards to the Abuse of Power and Treason committed which led to those International High Crimes- Walk the these prosecutorial charges Backwards.
If the Repugs want to be Afraid let’s give them something REALLY to be afraid of- The Gallows!

Hope is a nice thing to have. But realism and an awareness of what is going on is a far better trait for those who actively seek change for the better.

There already exists a history of Obama judgment calls, appointments , expansion of war, giveaways of a trillion or so, a lot of airy speeches and a whole lot of betrayal as well.

But hope is nice.

That’s right Robinson, Obammer is going to save us. All he has to do is spread open his a** cheeks and golden sunshine will emanate from it accompannied by the clarion calls of angels. It is all going to be fine. Cheney World will replaced by Obammer world. Miracles will happen. Farts will smell like Channel No 5. There might even be a play based Michelle Obammer with subtle tones of Eva Peron. I am so happy!

In the Robinson-Dionne world there is only the Dem world vs the Gop world.  In the real world, both the Dems and the Gops, as well as the economy and the mass media, are controlled by the ruling class who rule the US population.  In the real world the real struggle is between the ruling power structure, who finance fake Progressive truthers like Robinson,  and the people ruled by the power struture..

I consider a good healthy well presented dose of optimism an encouraging sign but I will not forget promises made and broken with what seems too evident a continuation of the ruinous course the previous administrations(decades worth) set in motion and I am not oblivious that 4 months does not a president make, and to turn that around, ‘actions speak louder than words’.

Danger is, though, the longer that what are clearly illegal activities are allowed to continue the more acceptably entrenched they become as a way of ‘doing business’ (control fraud) and as long as major events that have contributed to the disasterous ongoing crises are NOT investigated and the truth brought to light, the less anything will change and history will indeed repeat itself.

And because the human species are the most incredibly inept and irresponsible ‘steward’ of this planet, don’t anyone expect a change for the good anytime, on a relative, geologic or astronomic scale, to happen soon.

Listening to Cheney brings back memories of working with people who were psychotically paranoid.  You don’t discuss whatever delusion it is that powers their lives, because it just makes things worse.  The thing is, when this person is your patient, you can feel tremendous compassion for the way his life is ruled by these delusions, but when such a person is your boss, for instance, you’re living in the same hell—which we’ve all been doing for the last eight years.  Some of us have been liberated.  Of course, Chris Hedges would say we’re delusional if we believe Obama will accomplish anything good.  I hope he’s wrong.  I think we have to hope that the energy freed up has created enough momentum for change, regardless of what Washington can handle.  Certainly Cheney isn’t the only sick bastard in that town.

So in other words, they’re both idiots.  Thanks for clearing that up.

Worse, they’re both rational-utilitarians still stumbling along the back-asswards path laid down by Descartes.  Try it this way: “I am, therefore i think.”

Worse yet, they both believe that one half of the binary pair can conquer the other.  There is no good without evil, no black without white, no life without death.

If we keep treading the path of piss-poor “Christian philosophy” (which is, in fact, neither) we’ll end up right where the Book ends…hallelujah.

Re, Ardee
In the world of Washington politics, it is impossible to get anything accomplished or “changed” without knowing and understanding the methods and system as it is. Obama is the first breath of fresh air Washington has had in many years.  You are probably right about his knowing and using the methods and system of Washington politics but we elected him with the hope that he will not be just more of the “same”. Democrats and Republicans have reason to fear change because neither party represents anything more than their own best interests and both have a history of sacrificing the interests of country for their own political gain. I believe it is the hope of most people in this country, that Obama is a different kind of politician; one that loves his country more than his bank account.

Mr. Robinson, a stalwart at Ourfuture.org where democrats do no wrong, betrays a common illusion among far too many. In his recitation of the two worlds theory, Cheney’s and Obama’s, he attempts to slide past many similarities in both worlds.

It isnt really Cheney world, as that represents an extreme side of neocon world, nor is it Obama world either, as this man seems not to have defined a world as yet, though he speaks to many things with passion and elegance.

There are far too many similarities between the actions of this administration and those of his predecessor to fully accept Mr. Robinson’s paeon to Democratic loyalty.

The fact of the matter is there is only one world, and both democrats and republicans do the bidding of those who rule that one world.
