Tea and IgnorancePosted on Apr 16, 2009By Marie Cocco There’s nothing like tax-filing season to remind Americans that the only things certain in life are death and taxes—or that few public outcries are considered more patriotic than grousing about paying up. What’s an ornery tax filer to do? Have a tea party, of course. With all the simplistic bombast that we’ve come to expect from partisans who are locked out of power and floundering with low public approval, conservative and Republican activists around the country have staged quite a number of these media events over the past few days, and already have begun organizing for more on July 4. The nation, they claim with straight—if angry—faces, is being strangled by high taxes, heavy-handed government and profligate spending. If only we could sweep away all this excess, we’d return to the shining prosperity we enjoyed ... when? Well, they don’t say. There is little anyone can do about these rants except worry they will be believed by a wider public. So, on the theory that the truth may one day—some day—set us free, it is worth examining exactly what we’re all paying, and what for. Advertisement The effective rate is now lower than it was during Ronald Reagan’s second term, lower than during George H.W. Bush’s term, and lower than it was during Bill Clinton’s tenure—which is a period most Americans remember pretty fondly as one of robust economic growth. By the time Clinton left office, the deficit had been eliminated and Congress was debating whether it would be beneficial to pay off every dollar of the public debt. You would think it would logically follow that the tax-and-spending protesters would embrace Clintonomics. But of course, they did not then and they do not now. They continue to let out a primal scream against high taxes and wasteful spending, without ever identifying whose taxes should be cut further: The wealthy? Or the working and middle-class people whose taxes President Obama wants to keep reducing? The tea party folks come up with incendiary examples of wasteful spending that this congressman or that slipped into the federal budget. Trouble is, this type of spending is such a small part of the budget that you could eliminate every penny of it and still not have nicked the deficit. So what do we really spend all this tax money on? About two-thirds of it goes toward defense programs and health expenditures, according to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Defense spending accounted for 21 percent of the budget last year, including the cost of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—military operations that I’ve heard exactly no one on the right say we should stop paying for. Nor has there been a hint, just yet, of conservative enthusiasm for the deep cuts in Cold War-era weapons programs that the Obama administration recently proposed. Social Security accounts for another 21 percent of spending, and big health programs—Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program—20 percent. Do the tax protesters want to cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and insurance for children whose parents earn too much to qualify for Medicaid? OK, maybe they do. But the last time this was tried was in the mid-1990s, after the Republican takeover of Congress and the attempt at implementing the GOP’s Contract With America. The public did, indeed, rise up in revolt—against the idea of cutting the health care safety net for the elderly, the disabled and the poor. Is it just a coincidence that former House Republican leader Dick Armey, one of the architects of the Contract With America—leads one of the groups that has been promoting the tea parties? Or that, with the 2008 presidential election over, the Fox News network has found in the tea parties a media moment for its conservative audience? The din grows louder only because it must drown out the facts. But the facts still speak, firmly and correctly, for themselves. If I moved to Texas a good percentage of other Americans fed up with all the Tax and spend Politicians in Washington would to. And then you would have to invade just so you and all the others on the left can keep collecting the taxes to run your Government programs of graft and Curruption and Missimformation. Like withholding the true records of the Voucher system for Washington D.C. before the program was voted out by Liberals payed for by two liberal Teacher’s Unions that doesn’t give a hill of beans about educating the student. The Department of Education refussed to release these records before the March 10th vote and just released them a month later when they would do the students no good. Even now the Department of Education has put a gag order on its Employees to keep them from talking about a success that has been thrown on the trash heap. Just another way or New Administration shows its transperency to America (what I just said is meant to be sarcastic to you liberals and the far left.). You are willing to sell our children out in every way possible because an educated electorate will vote every one of the liberals and leftist out of office in this country. Socialism doesn’t work if you don’t see that you are one of the Deaf, and Blind individuals who will never admitt to their mistakes.

Ms Cocco,
Report thisThe protest on Tax day was not about paying fair taxes, but about the abuss’s of a bloated 16,000 earmarks in a bloated budget that will not provide one new job for Americans. 13 million American unemployed and the President wants to mortgage our Childrens futures knowing we will never be able to pay up. Ms Cocco has bought the line of the liberals and shown her ignorance of what is fueling the Tea Parties. She has shown her Bias and this is what is really angering the people not taxes. But this inability of the Liberal left (which makes up about 7% of the population.) to put themselves in the shoes of the People protesting rather than calling them ignorant. Protest which Ms Cocco seems to have forgotten is our Right guariteed by the U.S. Constitution. She also has forgotton the fact that nearly 53 million voted against Obama and while 56 million voted for him, this is no land slide, no justification for the Democratic Tax and spend liberals who have stolen my party to spend this country into Bankruptcy. The vote can hardly be called a referrendum on basic beliefs the liberal Nancy Pelosi has no referrendum to push her foolish Ideas down our throats. The Tax Tea Parties were about the continued curruption within our budget system, and the Curruption being allowed by the Obama click, tax fraud, and double dealing, and the lack of the wall of transperancy which Obama said would be the foundation corner stone of His Administration. Ms. Cocco has marginalize about 53 million Americans, she has shown her own victrolic viciousness rather than report the news, she is a Propagandist in the same form as Eichman, and Pravda. She has a right to her oppinion and I have the right to attack it when she does’t speak the truth so the Conservatives wanting smaller Government and the Liberals wanting Big Brother Government are at Loggerheads. While the Bias of the News Media favors the elitist left over the ordinary citizen (the ones who protect and serve), unlike the politicians in Washington of both Parties who refuse to do the will of their constituents because it doesn’t fit their own agendas.

I don’t care how high taxes are. I gave up unemployment benefits to take a 15% commission job that is not working. I am going to be homeless. I have a resume, skills, and references. There are no good jobs. The taxes will not affect me. Did the Reagan tax cuts for the wealthy ever create jobs? Did the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy ever create jobs? I can’t even get a job selling shoes or dresses. The malls are closing. Why should I tea bag the government? My cremation is pre-paid. The tax payers will not have to pay to bury me. That is what happens when you are good. It hits you back in the ass. I should have stayed on unemployment. Oh no! I was going “carry my load.” The “Notify you when others comment on this article?” is not checked. I do not care what anyone says. My life is just about finished. Tax cuts? I would have been so happy to pay taxes as long as I could work. I was a responsible person. It’s all over now. It did me no good whatsoever to be responsible, to work hard, to save, to care about others, to take care of myself. I wish abortion had been legal & my mother had had common sense enough to have one.

the threat of these Tea Parties is that, since the Dems are not mobilizing the angry populism of the people, the Gops may do it with a fascist movement. The American left is neutralized by Obaama cheer leaderss like Louise who simply maintain traditional liberal ruling class values in a totoality different situation.
gops like Bush, a son of a billionaire family that went to Eastern schools, have routinely railed against the Elitsts liberals. And, indeed, they are Elitist, just as Bush is.
But the Gops are fighters, since the majority of the ruling class is Republican, and funds and medias a militant movement. The function of the Dems is to prevent the progressive population from class struggle, while getting rank and file Dems to support conservative policies.
The threat is a rise of geunine fascist movment in the US, as opposed to postmodern despotism that we now possess in the US power system. Zionists would no doubt help organize such a movment in order to increase ethnic cleansing in Israel. It’ss a real possibility, especially with Obama looking forward not backward.

But, Clintonomics?? Really? I thought we had pretty much settled that that was a dot.com bubble…NAFTA, tax cuts for the rich (has Pres. Obaam reversed those yet???)
Jason! It is true that ‘crooks in DC” walked away with way too much. But, the real “winners” were on Wall St. (which will dutifully pay bac k DC in fund raising ) If these same people had showed up for a rally against Bush’s (and now Obama’s) bailout, I might have had some respect for them.
CJ—If everyone quit smoking, tobacco farmers could grow more food, we’d save gobs on tobacco subsidies (what do do about ag-business subsidies I’ll leave for another day) and, our health care rates would go down so far, we could probably have a form of SCHIP for everyone (speaking as a former long time smoker). Studies show over and over again, that the poor are vicitimized by smoking. Of course, the tobacco lobby is busy openineg new mkts in other countries, especially China and Eastern Europe…I assume that you support the so -called “Fair Tax”—(maybe not?)which includes a “value added” tax, which would hit poor and smokers many times more.(also eaters and stuff…) I think you mean neo-liberalism, which , sometimes , seems to be about all that is left of the Old Left…it can be more pernicious than a neo-con who will tell you to your face to go die somewhere (but not intentionally, or , if you survive, you go to jail)

CJ, Quit smoking. You talk as though smoking and stress are your friends. They’ll kill you. I know.
Report thisCarbon taxes. Why create carbon taxes? They create carbon taxes to keep people from using the resource. What is wrong with that? The poor and the middle class will reduce their use of carbon when it hurts. Do you see what is wrong with that? It is like the smoking taxes except this time it will be on items that everyone needs, not a luxury. These taxes will only hurt average Americans. The rich could care less as CJ has pointed out.
Perhaps King Obama could come up with a system where when I buy a gallon of gas it cost me a nickel in taxes while the execs at AIG pay a couple of million dollars in taxes. Just joking.
Obama, Gore and the people backing them are smart enough to know that they will crush our country. They believe that if we are hungry enough we can rationalize anything.
How can they keep the American people in check until we are ready to lash out at the world? Simple, they create a civilian army that is more powerful than the military. A civilian army can do things the military can’t becasue the military can’t move into a state without permission and now they will already be there.
I just read what I wrote and said to myself “That is absurd.” It certainly sounds like paranoia to me.
After all how could smart well to do Christian loving people intentionally hurt millions of people? I recall back in the 70’s the scientists tried to work out a solution to the suffering in over populated Asia/Africa where thousands of people would die because of starvation. They concluded that they could save those people but it would mean that there would be that many more people that will eventually suffer. It is best to let them die. That was the conclusion. Consider a think tank that looks at the energy crisis and concludes the easiest way of resolving the problem is to have millions die. In the mean time we’ll appease the people by telling them that solar and wind will fix almost everything. I think the thing that should make everyone sit up is bio-fuel. You need lots of farm land to produce lots of bio fuel. The solution is simple. Less people less need for food more farm land for fuel.
Technology probably can get us thru this without intentionally murdering a bunch of people, but the white shirts in Washington don’t have the imagination to make that work.
Really far fetched isn’t it. Please look hard at what Obama puts forward. Ask - Why are we doing this? How does this effect the American people? What are the alternatives? You can’t just let him say that if we don’t do this it will be a “catastrophe.” Wait a minute we’ve already let him do that once.
President Obama was selected and appointed because he is a smoke screen. It was easy to dislike Bush so it was easy to criticize him. Kennedy was loved by the American people and he brought us closer to the brink of destruction than anyone before or after. We couldn’t see thru his charisma. Obama’s handlers have learned from history - FDR, Hitler and Kennedy. Look how people followed. Are we going to do it again. Are we going to wait until we are bound and tied?

Or just “Ignorance” all around.
As one seriously steamed “teabagger” sympathizer, I’d point out that taxes are levied in a variety of ways, not only on income. In my own case, new taxes on smokes amounting to three times what the President is “giving” back. What the government giveth, the government taketh away by other means.
Should any ask why don’t I just quit smoking, I’d retort with two questions of my own: 1) Why should only the wealthy get to smoke (especially when the wealthy have options the working class does not. Working class includes majority of smokers as a product of suffering levels of stress unknown to those of higher economic status); 2) Were all to quit smoking, then how fund SCHIP?
The last thing upper-class leviers of taxes want is for working class to quit smoking. Liberals in particular talk a line that cannot be taken seriously, since too much money to be made.
It’s exactly on this sort of point that liberals reveal themselves as wolves in sheep’s clothing. There is no conservative free-marketeer like a liberal (old-style still) free-marketeer. So-called neo-liberalism is absolutely OF wider, capitalist liberalism.
But it’s not as though Americans in general are well-informed, liberals not even so much conservatives. Week-long, juvenile shtick on the parts of Olbermann and Maddow proof enough of profound ignorance on the liberal “left.” (Oh the fun Lenin would make of them—in their infantilism, and then as promoters of same. Garofalo—after last night’s rant on Countdown regarding “urban, older, white males” (at “tea parties) accompanied by women victims of “Stockholm”—in particular. Now THAT was display of ignorance, if not of sheer stupidity.)
Clintonomics? That disaster that resulted in “McJobs”? After much downsizing, not least by way of NAFTA. Then there was that deregulating-of-banking thing, now come to fruition. Clinton and his bud, Greenspan, are more to blame for now than any others.
I was forced to scoff when Obama talked of his wealthy self and his ilk now forking over as much as when Clinton was overlord. BFD, Mr. President. That’s all you got? That’s it? Not exactly Lincoln-esque. Not even Ike-esque. Never mind FDR-esque. Any damn fool who can’t get by on half a mil per annum needs to relocate to reality. In the history of humankind there has never been so adolescent a crew as this American society led by these…people?...passing for “leaders.” Most particularly of the liberal variety as so fond of (effectively) claiming that not only can cake be had, but so too can cake be consumed.
The New Left—in terror of being labeled the Old Left—became the infantile left, blamers of any and all on the ACTUAL left. The ACTUAL left with far more in common with ACTUAL conservatives than with liberal, identity-politics “left.” Jeanine! Keith! Rachel!
Obama has left it to individual state rulers to collect taxes on variety of teas. As before, placing the footing of bills squarely on the shoulders of those least able to afford to pay-up, but for a period circa 1945 - 1970-75. Since which time wages and salaries have remained flat. While grossly regressive taxes have only increased.
Liberal Obama, along with his Congressional/business/entertainment-media cohort, can easily afford increases in sales taxes despite minimal increase in tax on incomes. FITTY-DOLLAR (plus another fitty-dollar tax) Havana Cohebas all around, thank you very much!
Smug bullshit per ignorance by now constitutive of infantile liberalism, and by which the neo-con right is all the more easily enabled.

@Marie Cocco: Pure nonsense.
@mom23: Well said.
For those that don’t know it yet: there are two primary forms of taxes the government uses to fund their activities: 1) Income taxes, and 2) Printing money. The second form is even more insidious since so many people don’t even see it as a tax. But it is—it’s a hidden tax.
Just think of the effect printing trillions of dollars will have on the economy in just 1-2 years. This will eventually cause consumer prices to rise (inflation, probably hyper-inflation in our case) and people’s savings will virtually disappear. Sure that $100k that took the common man 20 years to save will still be there, but the purchasing power of this $100k will become a fraction of it’s value. When the government floods the economy with dollars it dilutes the purchasing power of all existing dollars. In effect, the government will have stolen this money from the common citizen by surreptitious means—i.e., printing money.
And whether this money is used for wars, for bailouts, for green energy infrastructure, the warfare state, or the welfare state, is completely irrelevant. Whenever people/politicians talk about taxes they almost always miss this second half of the equation. And when politicians don’t include this second half of the tax equation in their rhetoric, they are being disingenuous and dishonest.
For a deeper understanding of these issues, google Peter Schiff and watch some of his very informative videos on YouTube. Also have a look at John Williams shadow stats at http://www.shadowstats.com/—a website that reports real government statistics and not government issued propaganda. And, finally, re-read mom23’s comment and followup on some of the links/resources he/she provided.

Hit the nail right on the head! Only the wealthy and powerful have a gripe here, because only the wealthy and powerful will see their taxes go up. And as usual those who are neither wealthy or powerful are being used, abused and manipulated, to serve the very people who cause them harm. Somewhere, someone is chuckling. Once again the useful idiots have come through for the man.
Maybe it’s a form of brain-swell. The pressure on that hard skull has to hurt! Angry people need an outlet. Angry people are drawn to other angry people. Give an angry person an excuse to express their anger and they will.
BobZ,
“The real protest is about a black man as president. This is racism at its worst. And for a governor of a major state like Texas to talk about seceding from the Union is especially reprehensible. We expect our political leaders above all to act in a responsible manner not like a spoiled child.”
~~~
Some people just can’t stand to see a black, or any color for that matter have power over them. It’s OK for a “colored” to be a champion basketball, baseball or soccer player. A musician or performer. That kind of power entertains the white man, so in a sense “serves” the white man. Just as the “colored” who cleans the house and raises the kids serves, but never controls. Hence, use the labor of the immigrant, but never give them citizenship. That would threaten because that would look to much like equality.
Maybe it’s a brain disorder. Or maybe it’s the end product of having grown up surrounded by narrow minded people. Maybe that’s what narrow-minded means. A thick skull restricting blood-flow to a mind narrowly crammed into a space to tight for expansion.
Or maybe that pain in the gut that creates fear in the mind that leads to hate, is as misunderstood as it is unrecognized. Fear of the “other” is translated into fear of Obama being right, and succeeding. Because if Obama is right and he does succeed, the narrow, prejudiced mind will have no reality to anchor their fear and hate on!
This article is completely misleading. I did an amazing thing and actually looked at the report she references from the Congressional Budget Office. The report from this nonpartisan office is not based on current tax returns under the current administration. The rates are from 2006 taxes (filings made in April of 2007). This author tries to give the reader the perception that this current Democratic Congress & Democratic President are responsible for the lowest taxes since Ronald Reagan and that is simply false. The effective tax rate she is referencing is based upon the latest available date 2007 filings (which means from the 2006 tax rates). Let’s see, who was President in 2006? Yes, that was even before the Democrats took over Congress. See: http://cboblog.cbo.gov/?p=226
It is funny how the Democrats and their pundits only site this agency when they can manipulate the data to support their contentions. No one in the Congressional leadership or the President’s office likes to rely on the following report from the Congressional Budget Office that talks about how much the deficit is going to continue to increase under the President’s first budget: http://cboblog.cbo.gov/?p=216. This same article also reveals that the President’s report underestimates the amount of the deficit. All of this from a nonpartisan office.
I think this author misses the point of those participating in the Tea Parties. These individuals are not complaining about paying of the taxes now. The use of April 15th was symbolic. The Tea Party protests were more about the out of control spending that has no end in site. The individuals at the protests have the common sense to say that printing trillions of dollars and using borrowed money to continue to spend at this proposed magnitude will result in increased taxes just to cover the interest payments to the Chinese and will strap future generations with insurmountable debt. This means we shall be getting less and less for the money we send to the Federal Government in taxes. Yes, people at the rallies blamed all those in Congress who voted for this crazy plan regardless of party affiliation.
Furthermore, to say that the President is decreasing taxes is another misleading talking point by the Obama campaign that this “journalist” has tried to write as fact. First, taxes will increase across the entire progressive bracket system when the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire. Which is what this President and Congressional leadership are advocating. This will impact even individuals who make less than $250K, provided they pay taxes. Second, the current President is implementing proposals that will result in increased taxes on ALL taxpayers regardless of income. Because what the Democrats and those who spew the campaign talking points keep ignoring is all the other taxes paid by all individuals besides income taxes - cap & trade being a HUGE one. This will affect every consumer regardless of income.
Finally, this so-called journalist shows that she has failed to research the tea parties as they do provide an alternative to the tax system. There is an overwhelming majority of those at the tea parties who advocate scrapping the current tax code and enacting the “Fair Tax.” Many also advocated a true stimulus bill proposed in Congress which provided that the Government place a moratorium on taxes for 3-6 months. This would have truly had an immediate impact on all working Americans and cost less than the actual bill that was passed (many provisions of which won’t even take effect for 2-3 years). To say that the protesters are simply complaining and not offering solutions is completely ignoring the truth.
Our country would be so much better served if we put ourselves on a Dave Ramsey diet - better yet make Dave Ramsey President!
The funny part is that Fox and CNBC represent big corporations who brought on much of our economic problems. But that is not the real protest. The real protest is about a black man as president. This is racism at its worst. And for a governor of a major state like Texas to talk about seceding from the Union is especially reprehensible. We expect our political leaders above all to act in a responsible manner not like a spoiled child.
I have heard far more about this Tea Party business from leftists than from right-wingers.
Amusingly, “Tea Party” is also the name of a radical left-wing organization (very minor) of recent years. When I first heard about it I thought it was “Pee Party” and started referring to it that way. Maybe the sobriquet could be transferred?
Jason writes: “The tea party is not about cheering your fav team, it is about a lot of pissed off Americans who watched the economy tank while the crooks in washington walked off with fortunes.”
Uh huh. Sure. And one of the major sponsors of your Republican Hate Rallies is FreedomWorks, headed up by a legislator-turned-corporate lobbyist who made his fortune exactly in the way you just described.
Once again, you people are proving to be useful idiots for the corrupt politicians you’re complaining about. It’s as plain as day, and only a truly deluded soul can’t see it. I’m almost embarrassed for you, actually.
“The tea party is…about a lot of pissed off Americans who watched the economy tank while the crooks in washington walked off with fortunes.”
This is interesting and not at all what I experienced. The Tea Parties I saw had no cohesive message to be found. It seemed to me that it was a gathering of people who had not voted for Obama and were upset that he was enacting the specific policies that they had voted against (and the majority of the country had voted specifically for).
I saw signs of Obama the facist, Obama the socialist, Obama/Urkel “Did I Do That” to the economy, I saw Chairman Maobama, Let’s see your birth certificate Obama, Hussein Obama, Muslim Obama, ACORN bashing. I did see a number of children holding signs signaling that we were stealing their childrens’ future (or in one case, trip to DisneyWorld), and I did see a few signs highlighting the disconnect of Main Street vs. Wall Street. But there was certainly no cohesive message, everyone came for quite unique and individual reason.
“Locked out of power”. Where have you been hiding under a Liberal Rock I guess. Don’t think for one minute that we were happy with the just purged administration either. I took time off from work
yes I work, and made the 1 hour drive to Annaplois to place my self in the rain to be a part of a “Tea Party” you may picutre this as me with a cup of tea with my little finger pointing up. Not really we are ticked off and would like to see ‘term limits’ and a whole lot less government period. A congressional job as well as a senate job should be part time and not professional. Those folks all of them have not a clue and you who wrote this article - well all I can say is if my government moves to the left about a half a step you folks will be some of the first to go with this type of government. We are in deep crap right now.
The anger is not abut the current tax rate. Most people are smart enough to figure out that the spending outlays that are presented by the Obama Administration will have to be paid for in the near future. That is when taxes will become onerously high and begin to effect the economy.
After listening to Governor Perry insuate that the great state of Texas might consider seceding,I say,go for it!I have always maintained that the REAL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA would have been better off if the south had won the civil war. if Governor Perry is sincere in his desire to exit the union,I would hope that he would consider taking all the nut job southern republican politicians with him!! I say Rush Limpballs for president of the new nation of Texas.Thanks ya’ll.reached
You should suffer no illusions about this.
Report thisThe Right is simply exploiting growing populus resent that sees the banks getting over. There is little representation—other than Obama’s increasingly hollow lip service, that speaks to this growing hostility from all quarters. The Right is doing their best to channel it for their own agenda. They, of course, could be slapped down, but the problem is the Democrats are so complicit they can’t very well put up a fuss other than to throw the occasional bone.
Oh my Marie. You really missed the mark here.
The tea party is not about cheering your fav team, it is about a lot of pissed off Americans who watched the economy tank while the crooks in washington walked off with fortunes.
You can try and split hairs over the tax rate but it has nothing to do with the issue. Our money enables massive corruption and waste.
