The Man Who Won’t ChangePosted on Mar 5, 2009I was going to give this a good leaving alone. But there I was flying home from a mellow family visit when El Rushbo filled—and I do mean filled—the screen before me, delivering what he called “my first ever address to the nation.” Who knew there’d been a coup while I was gone? Hail to the Chief? Dressed in a style David Letterman later labeled as “Eastern European Gangster,” Rush Limbaugh delivered a rousing 85-minute sermon to conservative true believers that included an unapologetic hope that President Obama will fail. Ah yes, a talk radio host who’d rather be (far) right than have his country rescued. Charming. Limbaugh was not only a counterpoint to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who delivered the hapless Republican response to the president. He managed to bully the Republican leadership, including its party chair, the misnomered Michael Steele. After saying Limbaugh was “incendiary” and “ugly,” Steele turned to mush and groveled about being “a little bit inarticulate.” Despite watching Limbaugh’s rant at 30,000 feet, I read glowing reviews saying that “it will be talked about for years and even decades.” And so I am forced to return to the subject our man Rush implied just days earlier: “Why don’t women like me?” This question came after Public Policy Polling showed a gender gap of massive proportions in his approval ratings. Doing approval ratings of talk show hosts is pretty weird, but it turns out that 56 percent of men view him favorably compared to only 37 percent of women. Advertisement As he framed it, “ ’Cause I’m just a harmless little fuzz ball. I’m the sweetest, the nicest, most generous, compassionate, confident, cocky, I-know-what-I-want-and-I-know-what’s-right-and-I’m-going-to-say-what-I-think kind of guy you could run into, and I’m saying to myself, ‘What could be the explanation for the gender gap?’ ” Gosh. Was it something he said? Could it have the teensiest bit to do with all those “feminazi” cracks? Was it his warning that “the last place you want to be is between a liberal who gets herself pregnant and a morning-after pill”? Was it his crack that Hillary would lose because Americans didn’t want to see a woman age in office? Or his description of New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand as “marginally hotter than the former senator.” If that were the only problem we could cure it with duct tape. Now a touch of reality here. Women don’t tune in to talk radio as much as men. Talk radio has been the forum of the “angry white man” since the 1990s. Women have had quite enough men yell at them, thank you, and Rush is more than vaguely reminiscent of the boss from hell. This one can fire. But Rush, who brags “I own the men,” asked “what must I do now to own the women?” Well, sweetie, Oprah owns the women. If Rush talks at women, Oprah talks with women. Just imagine Limbaugh in marriage therapy letting his wife speak for an uninterrupted five minutes. You don’t own women unless you can listen to them. More to the point, remember that Oprah is all about change. Rush, however, is the prototype of the Man Who Won’t Change. What finally happened at that Female Summit? When women callers who love Rush told him how to woo women who didn’t, he balked. Pompous? “I’m not changing that.” Stop with the “babe” talk? “Why do I have to change who I am?” Be more vulnerable? “You’re trying to emasculate me here.” He was the commander in chief of the conservative crouch. None of this is world-shattering. Let him entertain us. What makes it notable is that the Man Who Won’t Change has used his ample body to fill the vacuum of Republican leadership. And the biggest gap in his public approval is among exactly those who left the party in droves: independent women. Yes, our pinup boy has a following of about 20 million listeners. But last time I looked, Obama won with nearly 70 million voters. At this rate, The Party That Won’t Change is going to have to rename itself the Grand Old Ditto Heads. © 2009, Washington Post Writers Group New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. Pick up a stone, at least three inches and no more than say six inches in diameter. Now put it on a window sill that you can monitor frequently. Wait at least a decade to see if it changed. This is a portrait of Rush Limbaugh.
aisbell, are you for real? Are you insane? Read what you wrote. First you whine about attacks on Limbaugh then you go onto immediately attack Oprah! Okay, maybe you are not insane, maybe you are just a moron. Talk about attack, I thought that was a fair one by me on you. And before you even say it, I am known for being egregious.

Now that the Republican Party has done everything it can think of to destroy America, Rush is saying anything he can think of to prevent president Obama from undoing the damage.
Mr. Limbaugh has become a character of himself, a vulgar vile toad of the right, he has done more than anyone ever could to give the people a good look at what goes on inside the so-called thought processes of the neo cons.

“”” Its time for mainstream America to turn ” El Lardo ” off. We have been paying way too much attention to his idiocy.”“”
You touch upon a point that will have much to do with whether this country really recovers its lost republic. The mainstream media is what really keeps the mainstream held back, controlled and stupified with its 4 or 5 owners of the information outlets of tv, radio, magazines, newspapers and books who are all conservative and neoconservative. This is the one point that I had hoped that obama would have attacked but as far as I can detect, obama has NOT done anything to correct this extremely unbalanced part of our democracy. So through his lack of even recognizing a problem with the msm, I can only conclude that the people will NOT be properly informed and will REMAIN always in the control of those traitorous owners of the msm.
Report thisKeep an eye out about this and what the FCC is doing and how it is handling the msm. This is one aspect that obama better come up with some ideas or his or anybody’s ideas will never bring the reality of this world to the poor ole msm dumbstruck citizens that still accept it as the unvarnished truth. Really, this is a point that will show how serious obama is about bringing us out of the disaster our past and a lot of present elected officials and corporate criminals have brought down on this country and the world.

I loved the article. It is so true in every respect. Thank You Ellen Goodman. I am male but have recognized females as the superior of the two sexes for a long time now. Rush Limbaugh is as inadequate and inferior as the male species provide. In Rush’s mind all women or men are inferior to Rush. Rush speaks the loudest but has the least to say. Those conservatives who identify with Rush are even more inadequate than Rush. We have given Rush way too much media coverage and way too much credit. The more attention he draws from mainstream America the more his ego grows. I would have to say that the only thing that is even more enormous in size than his ego is his ass. Its time for mainstream America to turn ” El Lardo ” off. We have been paying way too much attention to his idiocy.

Wow!
I have frequently found your posts quite obnoxious and preachy, but this was an amazing one and I compliment you on it!
A mind clear and open about an issue (Must be driving those dark SC roads late at night. BTDT) and immediately identifies and filters the manure stench in the air. You show clearly you don’t have to be a liberal or a “Progressive” to recognize the Gasbag for what he is: A hate-filled liar who plays on peoples’ fears.
I’ve always said that if Limbaugh says “Folks, I’m not making this up” he inevitably is doing exactly that.
Great post, C!

Returned Friday after spending over a week helping
Report thismy niece move into my Ohio home. She’s having
financial problems(who isn’t?) so I let her move into
my house rent free. Must be some way I can use this
as a tax deduction. I’m starting to drift. Back to
reality, Rush Limbaugh! I’m driving somewhere between Columbia, S.C. and Savannah, Ga. and listening to the radio. Usually, when I’m driving
I like to listen to discussions about Christianity
but on this particular day I couldn’t locate any so
I heard this loud voice blaring through the radio
and decided to listen to him. It was Rush Limbaugh.
I hate to admit it but I’ve never heard the man before. I could only stand about 30 minutes of him.
He must have used the word “liberal” at least 25 to
40 times within the 30 minutes I could tolerate him.
Not ONCE did he define what he meant by “liberal.”
It didn’t take me long to realize that he was a
deceptive loud manipulator. When he made one comment
I about hit the person driving in front of me. He
said, “The only reason unions exist is so they can
get money from their members to send to the “liberal”
Democrats in Washington.” I worked midnight shift in
a West Virginia coal mines while attending undergraduate school. I belonged to the United Mine
Workers of America. PROUDLY! One night the boss
assigned me a job I wasn’t hired to do, hanging
braddish cloth so the miner running a machine called “the miner” could get air while he cut
the coal at the face. A dirty and dangerous job.
The miner running a machine called “a joy” hit me
in my heel with one of the arms of the “joy.”
The “miner” cuts the coal, using two arms the “joy”
loads the coal into a buggy which transports the
coal to the main belt to be taken outside and loaded into a railroad car. When the man hit me in the heel with one of the joy’s arms, I threw down the
braddish cloth, picked up my bucket and went home.
The next night I was called into the big boss’s office and ask how I felt, I replied, “fine.”
He said, “Good, you are going back to hanging braddish cloth.” I said, “No, I’m not. I was hired
as a laborer not to hang braddish cloth which is a
different classification than a laborer.” He told
me to go gome. He didn’t have anything for me to do. I told my father about the incident. He said,
“Go down to the union hall and file a case.” I did.
With the union’s help, I got my job back. If there
hadn’t been a union, I would have been fired. Now,
I’ve heard Rush Lumbaugh once. I don’t need to hear the big bag of deceptive wind again.

I agree that rush is a pig and he’s fat which I hope kills him and the sooner the better, BUT, he did not get fat from eating lard though the fat on him can be considered lard. He is fat because he eats too much carbohydrate food. How is that? Well, consuming carbs triggers the pancreas to release insulin into the body to control blood sugar but one of the other attributes of insulin is the storage of fat. Here you can be a little correct in thinking that rush is fat because he eats carbs because insulin’s ability to store fat also allows it to convert sugar to fat was well at increase the ability to store fats as fat and calories as well. What ever this creep eats he is sure enough storing a lot of stuff as fat in his gut and I hope he dies from from it soon.

Comments that attack the person of public figures are not only allowed, they’re common. You think Rush is getting slammed? You should see what the blogging left had to say about Hillary. While personal attacks don’t do much to advance the debate, if it’s directed at public figures, it’s fair game. Just don’t attack me or other commentators personally. Understood?

Yet all the attacks upon Limbaugh are allowed. Fine I don’t like him either. But fair is fair. Its not fair to allow attacks on Limbaugh but ban all comments that go against the “truth” dig propaganda.
Goodman says that “Oprah is about change”. hahahahahaha you’re kidding right? What change could Oprah possibly be about. Changing America from a white country to a colored one! Oh yeah that will be a great change. we can all see how great people of color are.
Take a good look at Africa, India and the Middle East. Oprah is all about change. Well perhaps we should start changing things back to the way they were because I remember that America was once the greatest country in the history of the world.
Of course that was before we became diverse wasn’t it. The very idea that Goodman would demonize a white guy and lift up a lowbrow black woman like Oprah says it all. Oprah made her money in entertainment, not rocket surgery. Yet she is lifted up and compared to a white man as a method of opposing what Limbaugh represents!
If you don’t have a better agenda than that then here is the problem with what has happened to the political left - it is bankrupt.
Bashing Limbaugh is a diversionary tactic while writers should be talking about all of the money Obama is taking from mostly white people and giving it to mostly Hispanic and other minorities in his “bailout”.
Why doesn’t Goodman talk about that. Where is all of this money going to come from when white people no longer even have jobs. Why doesn’t Goodman and “truth” dig talk about that.

I know of one woman who listened to Rush and she was a woman and a Republician and there are a lot of them in the South.
What I get from Rush is he only sees things in black and white (like most Republicians) he is sure that everyone can “pull themselves up by their own bootstraps”, everyone has access to education, everyone gets equal pay for equal work, I could go on and on but the main reason I don’t like Rush is he loves himself too much. And he is fat also and his fatness comes from lack of exercise, and eating too much pork. Usually LARD.

So poor Slush Rimbo doesn’t know why women don’t like him?
Top ten reasons Rush is single
1. His attitude
2. His physique and good looks?
3. His cigar smoking
4. His narrow-minded view of everything so far
5. His over inflated idea of his own worth
6. His over all display of lack of etiquette in public
7. His crudeness
8. His bulling personality
9. His lack of common knowledge of simple things i.e said a panda bear was a teddy bear on TV interview and argued he was right-he wasn’t-it was a panda
10. But most of all, there hasn’t yet been located on this planet, a woman who’s self esteem is so low that her life would be improved by accepting Rush for a significant bother/other.

Ellen Goodman’s article reminds me of one more reason Obama won. He listens.
Watching Obama and McCain campaign side by side, when it came to one-on-ones, we saw McCain talk, talk, talk. Obama listen, listen, listen.
McCain approached someone and you saw his mouth move, a polite response and his mouth move again and again and the recipient of his “pointing out how great I am” stood mute.
Obama approached someone and his mouth moved, a polite response, a question from Obama and the recipient of his question spoke, and spoke again, on and on, while a nodding Obama listened intensely.
If the repubs want to win elections again they need to study Obama, the man who listens. Of course that means they’ll have to relearn everything they’ve ever learned. Like they already know how to TELL people how great THEY are! But they don’t know how to listen. Listen to what the people have to say, listen intensely, and remember.
Of course that will never happen. Just like Rush, republican politicians are far more focused on their own importance than they are on the folks who vote. After all, what is the great battle for leadership of the party of the “pee on we the people” about anyway?
It certainly isn’t about anything the people want. Duh ...
